• Ubuntu One Windows application only accessing gpg files

  I'm on a windows 7 (64) machine right now, I have the Ubuntu One windows application. I'm synced to my online account, the folder I am accessing is... deja-dup\My-desktop When I click 'Sync Locally' checkbox and explore my folder I am only able to see three files of the form duplicity-full.#######.manifest.gpg duplicity-full.#######.vol1.difftar.gpg duplicity-full-signatures.#######.sigtar.gpg How do I access the content of these file? I put them on a linux server and decrypted them/ extracted them, however something is wrong. Note: I cannot use apt-get on the linux server I'm using. • Why does sharepoint claim not enougth disk space for backup when there is lots availalbe?

  I'm trying to run the following command: Backup-SPFarm -Directory E:\Backups -BackupMethod full -Verbose However it errors saying there isn't enough disk space... the backup will be about 1.8Gb in size, I have 27.52GB free, so why does it think I need 30Gb? • Cannont add service account to domain group during sql cluster install

  I'm installing a 2008 instance on a 2003 machine which is already running 2005. I need to set up domain groups for the security setup step: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179530.aspx On Windows Server 2003, specify domain groups for SQL Server services. All resource permissions are controlled by domain-level groups that include SQL Server service accounts as group members. Much more info on this here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910708 I've had problems with being able to add the windows service accounts to the groups at install time. The security admins had to make my account a domain admin - which they were hesitant to do. The account under which SQL Server Setup is running must have permissions to add accounts to the domain groups. Is there a specific security setting which would allow my account to add accounts to a group?

  I have been searching for an Ubuntu video I saw 1-2 months ago where they guy was demonstrating Ubuntu One and how he used it to sync local profile stuff across different machines. Has anyone seen this? I forgot exactly what it was about but I know he spent a minute or two on the video if not the whole video. I searched all my web history as well as youtube history but no go. Not sure if we are allowed to ask these questions but here goes.

• Need to convert a video file from mp4 to xvid

  I checked out the questions with similar titles and didn't find anything that I thought would help. I am attempting to convert a video into an avi, preferably xvid. The video file's Video and Audio Properties are as follows: Video Dimensions: 1280x544 Codec H.264/AVC Framerate: 24 frames per second Bitrate: 774 kpbs Audio Codec: MPEG-4 AAC audio Channels: Stereo Sample Rate: 48000 Hz Bitrate: 32 kpbs I have tried numerous times to convert this into an Xvid codec AVI but I have had no luck successfully getting the audio to sync properly. I am using Openshot to attempt conversion, using the libxvid codec and AVI format, but I am unsure of the proper audio settings I should use. What settings should I use to convert this video with Openshot? If it is not possible with Openshot, or if there is a better application to use, I would be grateful to know that as well.

• Developing for 2005 using VS2008!

  I joined a fairly large project recently and it has a particularity… Once finished, everything has to be sent to the client under VS2005 using VB.Net and can target either framework 2.0 or 3.0… A long time ago, the decision to use VS2008 and to target framework 3.0 was taken but people knew they would need to establish a few rules to ensure that each dev would use VS2008 as if it was VS2005… Why is that so? Well simply because the compiler in VS2005 is different from the compiler inside VS2008…  I thought it might be a good idea to note the things that you cannot use in VS2008 if you plan on going back to VS2005. Who knows, this might save someone the headache of going over all their code to fix errors… -        Do not use LinQ keywords (from, in, select, orderby…).   -        Do not use LinQ standard operators under the form of extension methods.   -        Do not use type inference (in VB.Net you can switch it OFF in each project properties). o   This means you cannot use XML Literals.   -        Do not use nullable types under the following declarative form:    Dim myInt as Integer? But using:   Dim myInt as Nullable(Of Integer)     is perfectly fine.   -        Do not test nullable types with     Is Nothing    use    myInt.HasValue     instead.   -        Do not use Lambda expressions (there is no Lambda statements in VB9) so you cannot use the keyword “Function”.   -        Pay attention not to use relaxed delegates because this one is easy to miss in VS2008   -        Do not use Object Initializers   -        Do not use the “ternary If operator” … not the IIf method but this one     If(confition, truepart, falsepart).   As a side note, I talked about not using LinQ keyword nor the extension methods but, this doesn’t mean not to use LinQ in this scenario. LinQ is perfectly accessible from inside VS2005. All you need to do is reference System.Core, use namespace System.Linq and use class “Enumerable” as a helper class… This is one of the many classes containing various methods that VS2008 sees as extensions. The trick is you can use them too! Simply remember that the first parameter of the method is the object you want to query on and then pass in the other parameters needed… That’s pretty much all I see but I could have missed a few… If you know other things that are specific to the VS2008 compiler and which do not work under VS2005, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll modify my list accordingly (and notify our team here…) !   Wow! This past weekend I attended SharePoint Saturday Washington DC (SPSDC) which was quite an event to say the least.  For those unfamiliar, SharePoint Saturday is a community driven event where various speakers gather to present at a FREE conference on all topics related to SharePoint.  This made my fifth SharePoint Saturday attended and fourth I’ve spoken at.  SPSDC was a bit different than most SharePoint Saturdays mostly due to the scale of it.  We had almost 950 attendees, over 80 speakers presenting close to 90 sessions, and dozens of sponsors.  A big thanks goes out to the organizers of this event.  They put in a lot of hard work and time to pull this event off and should be very proud of the end result.      For SPSDC I presented “The Power of PowerShell + SharePoint 2007”.  I want to thank all of the attendees of my session for coming and asking some great questions.  Below you can find the slides and demo scripts for this session.  I also took some photos throughout the day (not as many as usual since so much going on) so check them out.  If you have any follow up questions feel free to drop me a line in the comments or the contact link at the top of the site.   Slides and Scripts Click here for the demo scripts and slides posted on my SkyDrive. • Visual Studio 2010 Modeling and Architecture Tools

  Jennifer Marsman (Microsoft Evangelist) and Cameron Skinner (Microsoft Visual Studio Product Unit Manager) recently stopped by our office while they were passing through Louisville on their tour to give us a presentation on the new Visual Studio 2010 Modeling and Architecture Tools. I checked out these new features when Visual Studio 2010 Beta versions originally rolled out and have been really impressed with this stuff ever since then. So it was pretty cool to actually learn some new techniques from Cameron himself since he helped write the actual code behind some of those features. If you've upgraded to Visual Studio 2010 recently I would highly recommend using the Architecture tools. They're awesome. If you want to make improvements to it, they even have their own SDK for it. There are plenty of blogs out there to show you how to use it. I've been waiting to find a tool that works like this where I can really analyze the code in solutions and projects and see how everything ties together. It's really handy if you're asked to work on a new project and aren't familiar with how it works. Just run the tools, analyze the DLL's, learn how everything works, and then you'll be ready to implement new code! It's a great tool to learn new systems quick and easy and it's all housed within the Visual Studio IDE. I just wanted to write a blog to brag about it a little bit, so I figured I'd throw this up here. It's a must have tool for Developers/Architects. • How do I uninstall Office Live Add-in 1.4 after installing Office 2010?

  Last night I upgraded to Office 2010 RTM from MSDN. I'm now trying to uninstall the Office Live Add-in that I used with Office 2007 as this functionality is built in to Office 2010. When I run the uninstall from control panel I get the following message: Microsoft Office Live Add-in cannot be installed because you do not have the right version of Microsoft Office installed on your computer Google has pointed to 2 solutions, both of which are pretty useless: Use the MS Windows Installer Cleanup - this is not good because all it does is remove the Installer entry from the registry, leaving all the installed files behind Uninstall Office 2010, uninstall Add-in, reinstall Office 2010 - that is just ridiculous, but typical MS response So, can I get this off my system without resorting to option 2?

  On button click in a winform application I am executing cmd.exe file (Using system("cmd.exe");), which opens perfectly fine and displays the following: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 6.1.7601] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C: A\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\WinformTest\WinformTest> What I want is when a user click the button, the cmd.exe open with default command and a message like this: Please change command options and press enter to get started experimenting C: A\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\WinformTest\WinformTest> reduction -x 33554432 -i Notice a new command and a message is already there.   Last week I spoke at TechEd India and the Visual Studio 2010 launch. It was a great event with over 3,000 attendees, far more than attended the Visual Studio launch in Las Vegas! Senior vice president of the Developer Division at Microsoft, S. Somasegar, did an awesome keynote. I did three sessions: Building applications with OData Building Line of Business Applications with WCF and Silverlight 4.0 Building Silverlight Business Applications with RIA Services Something happened to me that never happened before in my 13+ years of being a professional international speaker: I lost my voice! I was in Indonesia the week before and picked up a small bug and had no voice. This was a new challenge for me, and Microsoft offered to cancel my sessions, but I figured why would I let no voice stop me from delivering my sessions!! • SQL Down Under Show 51 - Guest Conor Cunningham - Now online

  Late last night I got to record an interview with Conor Cunningham.Most people that know Conor have come across him as the product team wizard that knows so much about query processing and optimization in SQL Server. Conor is currently spending quite a lot of time working on Windows Azure SQL Database, which we used to know as SQL Azure. I'm still trying to think of a good way to say "WASD". I suppose I'll pronounce it like "wassid". Windows Azure SQL Reporting is easier. I think it just needs to be pronounced like "wazza" with a very Australian accent.In the show, we've spent time on the current state of the platform, on dispelling a number of common misbeliefs about the product, and hopefully on answering most of the common questions that seem to get asked about it. • Difference between the terms Material & Effect

  I'm making an effect system right now (I think, because it may be a material system... or both!). The effects system follows the common (e.g. COLLADA, DirectX) effect framework abstraction of Effects have Techniques, Techniques have Passes, Passes have States & Shader Programs. An effect, according to COLLADA, defines the equations necessary for the visual appearance of geometry and screen-space image processing. Keeping with the abstraction, effects contain techniques. Each effect can contain one or many techniques (i.e. ways to generate the effect), each of which describes a different method for rendering that effect. The technique could be relate to quality (e.g. high precision, high LOD, etc.), or in-game-situation (e.g. night/day, power-up-mode, etc.). Techniques hold a description of the textures, samplers, shaders, parameters, & passes necessary for rendering this effect using one method. Some algorithms require several passes to render the effect. Pipeline descriptions are broken into an ordered collection of Pass objects. A pass provides a static declaration of all the render states, shaders, & settings for "one rendering pipeline" (i.e. one pass). Meshes usually contain a series of materials that define the model. According to the COLLADA spec (again), a material instantiates an effect, fills its parameters with values, & selects a technique. But I see material defined differently in other places, such as just the Lambert, Blinn, Phong "material types/shaded surfaces", or as Metal, Plastic, Wood, etc. In game dev forums, people often talk about implementing a "material/effect system". Is the material not an instance of an effect? Ergo, if I had effect objects, stored in a collection, & each effect instance object with there own parameter setting, then there is no need for the concept of a material... Or am I interpreting it wrong? Please help by contributing your interpretations as I want to be clear on a distinction (if any), & don't want to miss out on the concept of a material if it should be implemented to follow the abstraction of the DirectX FX framework & COLLADA definitions closely.
