  • To Interface or Not?: Creating a polymorphic model relationship in Ruby on Rails dynamically..

    Please bear with me for a moment as I try to explain exactly what I would like to achieve. In my Ruby on Rails application I have a model called Page. It represents a web page. I would like to enable the user to arbitrarily attach components to the page. Some examples of "components" would be Picture, PictureCollection, Video, VideoCollection, Background, Audio, Form, Comments. Currently I have a direct relationship between Page and Picture like this: class Page < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :pictures, :as => :imageable, :dependent => :destroy end class Picture < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :imageable, :polymorphic => true end This relationship enables the user to associate an arbitrary number of Pictures to the page. Now if I want to provide multiple collections i would need an additional model: class PictureCollection < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :collectionable, :polymorphic => true has_many :pictures, :as => :imageable, :dependent => :destroy end And alter Page to reference the new model: class Page < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :picture_collections, :as => :collectionable, :dependent => :destroy end Now it would be possible for the user to add any number of image collections to the page. However this is still very static in term of the :picture_collections reference in the Page model. If I add another "component", for example :video_collections, I would need to declare another reference in page for that component type. So my question is this: Do I need to add a new reference for each component type, or is there some other way? In Actionscript/Java I would declare an interface Component and make all components implement that interface, then I could just have a single attribute :components which contains all of the dynamically associated model objects. This is Rails, and I'm sure there is a great way to achieve this, but its a tricky one to Google. Perhaps you good people have some wise suggestions.   • How do I use multiple arguments from an array to construct an execl() call in C?

    I have a string array in C named args[] - now how can I use this list of arguments to construct a proper call to execl()? So if the array contains: {"/bin/ls","ls","-a","-l"} ...how can I eventually construct an execl() call that is: execl("/bin/ls","ls","-a","-l",NULL); I must be thinking about this wrong, as I can't find anything online, just talk about defining functions that can take a variable number of arguments.

  • After installing .net 3.5 SP1, get missing DLL error

    I just installed a number of updates to my machine, and am now encountering the following error when I run an asp.net MVC application on my local machine: Compiler Error Message: CS0006: Metadata file 'C:\WINNT\assembly\GAC_32\System.EnterpriseServices\2.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50a3a\System.EnterpriseServices.dll' could not be found I have removed the reference to this from the project (not really sure why it was there in the first place) but still get the error. Any idea on how to resolve this?

  • Apache authentication: Redirect on failure, reliably?

    I've set my ErrorDocument 401 to point to my website's account creation page, but not all browsers seem to honor this redirect (Safari). Also, other browsers (Firefox, Chrome) never quit asking for the password and show the ErrorDocument. This causes a good number of users to give up trying after many password attempts without seeing the account creation page. Is there any way to make the redirect more reliable, without trashing basic authentication altogether?

This article states that 73% of websites they tested rely on JavaScript for important functionality, but it seems to me that the number must be larger. Have any surveys been done on this topic? Maybe a better way to phrase this question is - are there any sites that don't use JavaScript? EDIT: By 'use', I don't necessarily mean "rely on for important functionality" - that was just the statistic that one article gave.

    I am creating a php script that requires the server to make several cURL requests per run. I'll be running this script through cron every 3 minutes. Im looking to maximize the amount of cURL requests I can make in a 24 hr period. What I am wondering is if it would be better from a performance standpoint to get a dedicated server, or several small shared hosting accounts. With the problem being number of external connections and not system resources I'm wondering which is the best approach.

    Say I want a function that takes two floats (x and y), and I want to compare them using not their float representation but rather their bitwise representation as a 32-bit unsigned int. That is, a number like -495.5 has bit representation 0b11000011111001011100000000000000 or 0xC3E5C000 as a float, and I have an unsigned int with the same bit representation (corresponding to a decimal value 3286614016, which I don't care about). Is there any easy way for me to perform an operation like <= on these floats using only the information contained in their respective unsigned int counterparts?

    Assuming there are a number of load-balanced web servers in a web farm, is it safe to use DateTime.Now in the application code for getting the system date/time or should we leave this responsibility to the database server? Would there be a chance that machine date/time settings on all servers in the webfarm are out of sync? If date/time will be the responsible of the DBMS, how will this strategy work if we have load-balanced replicated DBs?
