• Need help with ConnectionString value in C#

  Hi I have an idea and I want to apply it to my Application (C# .NET). When we connect to a DB (MS SQL Server 2008) in VS 2008, the ConnectionString saved in the Application Setting and it's a static varriable (no one can edit it unless you edit it inside VS 2008). I want a way to let my Application search for MS SQL Server and save it to Application Setting and use it to connect to my DB Programmatically. When my application start, the first thing to do is checking the ConnectionString if vaild, NOT Empty and test connection to MS SQL Server Successfully so if there is a proplem I think to show a window form to let the user enter some data like username and password for MS SQL Server 2008 Is there any way to do it?

• Mysql results sorted by list which is unique for each user

  Ive got a table of thousands of products and 50 or so authenticated users. These users all show the products on their own web sites and they all require the ability to have them ordered differently. Im guesing i need some kind of seperate table for the orders which contains the product_id, user_id and order column? How do i do this the most efficiently in mysql so as to be very fast, and not slow down if i get millions of products in the database. Is it even wise to do it in mysql or should i be using some kind of other index like solr/lucene? My Product table is called "products" My User table is called "users" A good example of the functionality i need is google search where you can order/supress the results if you are logged in. edit: the product results will be paginated and the users have the authority to edit the products, so its not just ready only

I am thinking about a client/server application and being new to this kind of application I have search a bit around the web and the solution which come the more often is to create a new thread for each new client connection. This solution seem fine but I was wondering if it was still usable with a application where you can have thousands of client at the same time ? Of course if there is thousands of client the application will not be hosted on a small desktop but on a real server, but is it the way to design an application for a large number of client ?   I was doing some web searching and found some strange things involving umlauts. For example if you do a google or yahoo search for the word "nther" you are likely to find things like G&#xfc;nther which I take to be Gunther with an umlaut over the u. Now my question is what if anything can I do to cause these characters to be properly displayed by Firefox under windows XP? An amazing thing is that I had to introduce spaces in the G & # etc string otherwise it was properly displayed here as u with umlaut!

• Mac OS X bash prompt bug?

  I am trying to set my bash prompt to display the time and current directory in bold: export PS1="\[\e[1m\][\A] \w \$ \[\e[0m\]" This does apparently work, but when I use the command history (ctrl-r), after finding the command I was searching for and pressing enter, this line is not displayed correctly. Here is an example: [21:58] ~/Wyona/svn-repos/zwischengas $ (reverse-i-search)`ta': tail -F logs/log4j-cnode1.log becomes, after pressing enter: [21:58] ~/Wyona/svn-repos/zwischengas $ -F logs/log4j-cnode1.log Of course, this is not "really" a problem, since the command does work correctly, but it is still annoying. Does anybody know why this happens? And, more importantly, how to prevent/fix it? Thanks, Memo

  Here's what I'm trying to do using the Wikipedia (MediaWiki) API - http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php Do a GET on http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?format=xml&action=opensearch&search=[keyword] to retrieve a list of suggested pages for the keyword Loop through each suggested page using a GET on http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?format=json&action=query&export&titles=[page title] Extract any paragraphs found on the page into an array Do something with the array I'm stuck on #3. I can see a bunch of JSON data that includes "\n\n" between paragraphs, but for some reason the PHP explode() function doesn't work. Essentially I just want to grab the "meat" of each Wikipedia page (not titles or any formatting, just the content) and break it by paragraph into an array. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Goals for 2010 Retrospective

  As we approach the end of 2010 I’d like to take a  few minutes to reflect back on this past year and revisit the goals that I set for myself at the beginning of the year (click here to see those goals).  I feel it is important to track your goals not only to see if you accomplished them but also to see what new directions in life you pursued.  Once we enter into 2011 I’ll follow up with a new post on goals for the new year. Professional Blog – This year I intended to write at least 2 posts a month.  Looking back I far surpassed that goal by writing 47 posts (this one being my 48th).  As with many things in life, quantity does not mean quality.  A good example is a number of my posts announcing upcoming speaking engagements and providing links to presentation slides and scripts.  That aside, I like to at least keep content relatively fresh on this blog  which I was able to accomplish.  At the same time I’ve gotten much more comfortable in my blogging style and it has become much easier to write. Speaking – I didn’t define a clear goal for speaking engagements, but had a rough idea of wanting to speak at 2-3 events.  Once again I far exceeded that number by speaking at 10 separate events and delivering 12+ presentations.  I’m very thankful for all of the opportunities that I was given and all of the wonderful people I have met as a result. Volunteering – This year I intended to help out with the COSPUG (now Buckeye SPUG) steering committee and Stir Trek conference.  I fulfilled both goals and as well as taking on lead organizer duties for the first ever SharePoint Saturday Columbus.  Each of these events and groups turned out to be successful and I was glad to be a part of them all.  I look forward to continuing to volunteer with each next year in some capacity. Android Development – My goal for getting into Android development was a late addition, but one I didn’t necessarily fulfill.  I spent a couple nights downloading the tools, configuring my environment, and going through some “simple” tutorials.  I say “simple” because in my opinion the tutorials were not laid out very well, took a long time to get running properly, and confused me more than helped.  After about a week I was frustrated with the process and didn’t think it was a good use of my time.  On a side note, I’ve dabbled in Windows Phone 7 development over the past few months and have been very excited by how easy and intuitive it was to get started and develop some proof of concepts. Personal Getting in Shape – I had intended to play on recreational sports leagues and work out on a semi-regular basis.  For the most part I fulfilled this goal by playing on various softball and volleyball leagues as well as using the gym.  At the same time I had some major setbacks.  In the spring I badly sprained my ankle and got hit in the knee with a softball which kept me inactive for almost 2 months.  More recently I broke my knuckle (click here to read about it) which I am still recovering from. Volunteering – On the volunteering front I kept my commitments at my parish’s high school youth group.  As for other volunteering opportunities I got involved with a great organization called Columbus Gives Back (website).  I’ve volunteered with them a few times and really enjoy their goal to provide opportunities to people with busy schedules.  They  offer a variety of events typically after work hours and spread out around Columbus with no set commitments on time you need to put in.  If you have the time or motivation I highly recommend them. House/Condo – I had been thinking of buying a house or condo this past summer, but decided to extend my apartment lease for another year instead.  I have begun the search for a place in the past few weeks and am excited begin the process of owning a home. Conclusion     This year I was able to set and achieve many of my goals.  For next year I’ll try to put more specific numbers to all of my goals.  If any of you readers set goals for 2011 feel free to send me a link as I’d love to see what you are aiming to accomplish.  Have a great end of 2010 and best wishes for the start of 2011!       -Frog Out

• Web scraping: how to get scraper implementation from text link?

  I'm building a java web media-scraping application for extracting content from a variety of popular websites: youtube, facebook, rapidshare, and so on. The application will include a search capability to find content urls, but should also allow the user to paste a url into the application if they already where the media is. Youtube Downloader already does this for a variety of video sites. When the program is supplied with a URL, it decides which kind of scraper to use to get the content; for example, a youtube watch link returns a YoutubeScraper, a Facebook fanpage link returns a FacebookScraper and so on. Should I use the factory pattern to do this? My idea is that the factory has one public method. It takes a String argument representing a link, and returns a suitable implementation of the Scraper interface. I guess the Factory would hold a list of Scraper implementations, and would match the link against each Scraper until it finds a suitable one. If there is no suitable one, it throws an Exception instead.

  i use the downloadable geonames database for all countries, states, counties and cities in the world. but i wonder if there is a database for streets? so you could pick: country - state/department/district - (county/region) - city - street in whatever country you like? cause when i do a search for a street in google map i can see all the upper levels (country/region/city). is there a database you could download for mysql for this? there has to be a database for this, cause there are always national companies that provide this kind of information. where did they get it from? thanks in advance!

  heyy there i want to parse a text,let's name it 'post', and 'urlize' some strings if they contain a particular character, in a particular position. my 'pseudocode' trial would look like that: def urlize(post) for string in post if string icontains ('#') url=(r'^searchn/$', searchn, name='news_searchn'), then apply url to the string return urlize(post) i want the function to return to me the post with the urlized strings, where necessary (just like twitter does). i don't understand: how can i parse a text, and search for certain strings? is there ok to make a function especially for 'urlizing' some strings? The function should return the entire post, no matter if it has such kind of strings. is there another way Django offers? Thank you

  I am not sure why other people have not asked this before. But have you notice that the asp:Calendar shows an extra week at the end? For example if the VisibleMonth is set to 2010-03-01 and FirstDayOfWeek to Sunday: It will show 6 weeks. Feb 28 to March 6 March 7 to March 13 March 14 to March 20 March 21 to March 27 March 28 to April 3 April 4 to April 10 I was wondering why Microsoft shows the last Row which is entirely on April. I tried to search the net for a property but it does not seem to be existing. The only solution that I could think of is to override the Pre_Render and check all individual date if they are still within the week of the VisibleDate. But of course that is an extreme checking since each rendering of the control shows it.

  I want a widget that allows users to add a request if that request hasnt already been added, or vote for a request if it has already been added. when a user adds a request, i want it to immediately appear as the first element of the list, like what would happen to your timeline if you made new tweet. ive tried to look for a jquery plugin that offers this functionality, but i was unsuccessful (maybe i couldnt think of the right terms to search for??). i dont have enough faith in my js skills to write this from scratch, so id rather find a template to start with.   If this is the wrong approach, please suggest something better, but my current efforts have been trying to find something that exists for a single page load, such that I can cache which javascript/css files have been included so as to only include them once. I thought in a TagSupport subclass I could use (HttpServletRequest)pageContext.getRequest().getParameterMap().put(srcKey,true) but the request is per jsp, not per page load so it was a failure. I could set up a filter in web.xml, but it seems I would have to search the response for duplicates and rewrite the response...pain. I could try to store things in the session, but there are headaches with clearing values... Any help would be appreciated.

What database design would be best in this case? I started with something like this.   Hi, I have a system that connects to 2 popular APIs. I need to aggregate the data from each into a unified result that can then be paginated. The scope of the project means that the system could end up supporting 10's of APIs. Each API imposes a max limit of 50 results per request. What is the best way of aggregating this data so that it is reliable i.e ordered, no duplicates etc I am using CakePHP framework on a LAMP environment, however, I think this question relates to all programming languages. My approach so far is to query the search API of each provider and then populate a MySQL table. From this the results are ordered, paginated etc. However, my concern is performance: API communication, parsing, inserting and then reading all in one execution. Am I missing something, does anyone have any other ideas? I'm sure this is a common problem with many alternative solutions. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paul

  I have two ways that I am doing a fuzzy search for a customer. One is by an abbreviated name and the other is by the customers full name. When I take these two and then union them together (which I have read several places should remove distinct values) I get duplicates. Thinking that all I need to do is then call the .Distinct() method on this I also still get Duplicates. Do I need to implement some compare functionality in my customer object?
