  I have written various scripts to launch Java server applications, which are typically run for 24 hours before being shut down (by invoking the same script with a different parameter). The script relies on environment variables defined in a file: ~/<user>.env, which I source from .bashrc. This works fine when invoking the script from the command line but if I want to add the script as a crontab entry I run into the problem where .bashrc isn't read. My question: What is the best practice approach for solving this problem? I realise I could define a crontab entry such as: * * * * 1-5 /usr/bin/bash -c '. /home/myuser/myuser.env && /home/myuser/scripts/myscript.sh' ... but this seems plain ugly. Alternatively I could source myuser.env at the beginning of every script, but this would become a nightmare to maintain. Any help appreciated.

• Monitor Processes' Memory Usage

  We have an IBM P series box running AIX 5.3. This is our application server, whereby our J2EE application is running in Oracle's Applications Server (version 10g r2). At around 11pm till the next day 7am, we have shell scripts running, which executes Java class programs. Recently, this server has been experiencing some high memory usage, which caused some of the Java class programs throwing "Out of memory" exception . We normally use NMON to monitor the server's resources, such as CPU, I/O, memory, etc. But because of this OOM issue, we would like to know throughout the day, what are the processes which are running and how much memory each process consumed. NMON is not able to show this. Even with the "-T" parameter, it only shows the top processes and not all. Is there any thing we can use to monitor all the processes' memory?

• New Book - Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development Made Simple

  It's nice to see another ADF book out there, this one from Sten Vesteli titled "Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development Made Simple" comes from Packet Publishing Unlike other ADF books out there, this one doesn't aim to teach you Oracle ADF, but rather focuses on the right way to structure and manage a project that leverages ADF. This is a welcomed addition to the bookshelf for people who are looking into ADF based development. One thing I find is that some organization just start developing an ADF application without first doing much planning, something that is understandable given that it is very easy to start building a prototype with ADF and then just grow it into a full blown application. However, as the book points out, doing a bit of planning before you delve into the actual project development can save you a lot of time in the future. For example it is much better to have the right breakdown and structure of your project to allow you to do efficient team development right out of the gate, then to find out 1 year down the road that you are dealing with one monolithic size project which is hard to manage. The book touches on such topics as project organization (workspaces, projects, packages), planning your infrastructure (templates, framework classes), coding standards, team structure, etc. It also covers various aspects of application lifecycle management such as versioning, build, testing, deployment and managing requirements and tasks and how all of those are done when using JDeveloper and Oracle ADF. It's nice to see that the book covers working with Oracle Team Productivity Center - a solution that might not be getting the exposure it deserves. The book also has some chapters about security, internalization and customization of applications both with MDS and with ADF Faces skins (and it even covers the brand new skin editor). Overall I think this is definitely a book you should read if you are about to start your way on a new enterprise scale ADF application. Taking into account the topics that the book discusses before you start your work will save you time and effort down the road. By the way, don't forget that as an OTN member you can get discount on this and other books.

• Why doesn't libxml2 support XPath 2.0?

  Libxml2 is the faster, stable and most popular "open DOM engine"... And the "XML C parser and toolkit of Gnome". The initial release of Libxml2 was September 1999, 13 years ago. XPath v1.0 was also released at 1999. XPath v2.0 became a recommendation on January 2007, 6 years ago. We can suppose that the Libxml2 community have time and people to develop a XPath2... So, what is the problem? Why doesn't libxml2 (or a "libxml2 fork" or an "experimental lib"!) support XPath 2.0? Some raised hypotheses to discussion at answers, Because Libxml2 community (and Gnome community) dislikes and have no motivation to develop something to XPath2 or xQuery. 1.1. XPath2 needs (by mathematical proof) a very heavy parser, much slower, etc. that is not suitable to real-world Libxml2 applications. 1.2. Other "ideologic" dislikes/motivations. Because it is written with C, and for XPath2 is better to develop with C++. Because the above hypothesis of "Libxml2 community have time and people" is false. Because XPath2 became stable in 2010 with its "Second Edition" release, and ~2.5 years is not (?) enough time.

• How Can I assign an IP address to my virtual Windows Server, so that I can start using it almost as a VPS?

  We are a small office set up with two PC's out of which one of my PCs runs 24hrs. Its almost equivalent to a small server, but right now we're in need of a server which is why I am planning to keep my machine as well as a server into a single PC. I've used VMware Workstation to create a powerful Windows Server 2008 within my PC and I want to attach it to my Network Switch through the same PC where I am hosting it. I want to use it almost like a physical server with an IP address and everything so that I can connect from one Pc to the Server directly or my applications can connect to Server straight with the IP address. • HTC Android device mounted as USB drive is read-only unless I'm root

  When I connect my HTC Incredible S to my Ubuntu 10.10 system as a USB drive, the device seems to mount OK, but is read-only unless I access it as root. For example, if I run nautilus, I can't drag and drop files to the SD-card in the phone, but if I run sudo nautilus I can. I have USB debug support set on the phone (Applications > Development > USB debugging) and I have added a rule for the device in /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules on my Ubuntu system. Any suggestions as to how I can mount the drive so that I can copy content to the SD card without needing to sudo? Update Following advice from waltinator, I added the following line to my /etc/fstab: UUID=3537-3834 /media/usb1 vfat rw,user,noexec,nodev,nosuid,noauto However, the Android device is still being auto-mounted on /media/usb1 with uid and gid root.   i have created an mac application which can be open my file extensions. But when i tested it, i dont get the path of the file requested to open using the application, instead i got the "psn_0_151589". I checked it for itunes, textedit, xcode and other applications.   I'm looking for freeware, or preferably open source CD/DVD cataloging applications. Right now I'm testing http://www.gentibus.com/us/Download.htm, anyone got any other suggestions? I'd like the software to be actively maintained and not released and left behind. I'm looking for software which allows me to catalog, sort, search my DVDs/CDs into databases. Like I've 1 group of 10 dvds only with Fonts etc. I want to read the content into a Database called "Fonts'". Another group of 5 DVD's with Stockimages, and I want to read all 5 DVDs into the Database "Stock Images". Then I want this software to be able to open Database "Stock Images", I want to be able to browse DVD 1 - 5 and to see DVD 1 - 5's contents without having the DVD's in the optical drive.

• 2011 Tech Goal Review

  A year ago I wrote a post listing my professional goals for 2011.  I thought I would review them and see how I did. Release an Android app to the marketplace – Didn’t do it.  In fact, haven’t really touched Android much since I wrote that.  I still have some ideas but am not sure if I will get around to it. Contribute free software to the community – I did do this.  I have been collaborating with others via github more lately. Regularly attend a user group meetings outside of Java – Did not do this.  Family life being what it is makes this not that much of a priority right now. Obtain the Oracle Certified Web Developer Certification – Did not do this.  This is not much of a priority to me any more. Learn scala – I am about 50/50 on this one.  I read a few scala books but did not write an actual application. Write an app using JSF – Did not do this.  Still interested. Present at a user group meeting – I did a Maven presentation at the Java user group. Use git more, and more effectively – Definitely did this.  Using it on a daily basis now. Overall, I got about halfway on my goals.  It’s not too bad since I did do a few things that weren’t on my list. Learned to develop applications using GWT and deploy them to Google App Engine Converted one of my sites from PHP to Ruby / Sinatra (learning to use it in the process) Studied up on the HTML 5 features and did a lot of Javascript development

• Do ORMs enable the creation of rich domain models?

  After using Hibernate on most of my projects for about 8 years, I've landed on a company that discourages its use and wants applications to only interact with the DB through stored procedures. After doing this for a couple of weeks, I haven't been able to create a rich domain model of the application I'm starting to build, and the application just looks like a (horrible) transactional script. Some of the issues I've found are: Cannot navigate object graph as the stored procedures just load the minimum amount of data, which means that sometimes we have similar objects with different fields. One example is: we have a stored procedure to retrieve all the data from a customer, and another to retrieve account information plus a few fields from the customer. Lots of the logic ends up in helper classes, so the code becomes more structured (with entities used as old C structs). More boring scaffolding code, as there's no framework that extracts result sets from a stored procedure and puts it in an entity. My questions are: has anyone been in a similar situation and didn't agree with the store procedure approch? what did you do? Is there an actual benefit of using stored procedures? appart from the silly point of "no one can issue a drop table". Is there a way to create a rich domain using stored procedures? I know that there's the posibility of using AOP to inject DAOs/Repositories into entities to be able to navigate the object graph. I don't like this option as it's very close to voodoo.

• Cinnamon is broken after upgrade to 13.10

  I see reports of people with Unity broken after upgrading to 13.10. In my case Unity works fine but cinnamon is broken. It opens the startup applications but no window manager, no menus and the keyboad shortcuts won't work. As a consequence I can't even log out or shut down cleanly. • Multi monitor windows positioning problem

  I need a good multi monitor tool mainly to gain control over the windows positioning. I have problem that closed window/application remembers at which monitors it was (closed). I have disconnect this monitor (this is often LCD TV) I have problem with this "remembering" windows/applications that was closed in LCD TV are out of sight when LCD TV is disconnected. What is the best practice to deal with this problem other that that not to close windows on this monitor)? Are there any good multi-monitor software to deal with this?

• Migration of PowerBuilder application to multiplatform

  I developed a client/server application with PowerBuilder in the past for medical clinics and done maintenance for it until now. Now, some clients are asking me to develop a release for Mac/Linux and need some advice about what programming language/technology is best suited for it and the learning curve. It’s not a very very big program but I’m the only developer and have done it in my spare time. PowerBuilder is very productive for this kind of projects (database centric), but it’s not multiplatform and it’s hard to sell PowerBuilder application now days (web, .NET, java sells a lot better with his marketing). My programming skills: - I studied C and C++ in the past (university) but never used it on real projects - Have some Java experience but not in desktop applications - Some experience with Ruby on Rails for web projects - Good skills with PowerBuilder and C# (.NET) (there are my main developing languages) My first dilemma is if I change the desktop application to a web interface, but I think the user will lose some user-experience, and some doctors don’t have a clinic (they are alone at home with my software). I think installing a web application (with webserver) for one user will be overwhelming. If I continue developing desktop application, what is at the moment a good framework/toolset to learn having my skills? Somebody has had similar experiences? A lot of thanks

  A couple of months ago i was hired in a new job. (I'm fresh out of my Masters in software engineering) The company mainly consists of ERP consultants, but I was hired in their fairly small web department (6 developers), our main task is ERP/ecom integration (ERP-integrated web shops). The department is growing, and recently my manager asked me to start thinking about introducing tests to the team, i love a challenge, but frankly I'm a bit scared (I'm the least experience member of the team). Currently the method of testing is clicking around in the web shop and asking the customer if the products are there, if they look okay, and if orders are posted correctly to the ERP. We are getting a lot of support cases on previous projects, where a customer or a customer's customer have run into errors, which - i suppose - is why my manager wants more structured testing. Off the top of my head, I though of some (obvious?) improvements, like looking at the requirement specification, having an issue tracker, enabling team members to register their time on a "tests"-line on the budget, and to circulate tasks amongst members of the team. But as i see it we have three main challenges: general website testing. (javascript, C#, ASP.NET and CMS integration tests) (live) ERP integration testing (customers rarely want to pay for test environments). adopting a method in the team I like the responsibility, but I am afraid that I'm in a little bit over my head. I expect that my manager expects me to set up some kind of workshop for the team where I present some techniques and ideas and where we(the team) can find some solutions together. What I learned in school was mostly unit testing and program verification, not so much testing across multiple systems and applications. What I'm looking for here, is references/advice/pointers/anecdotes; anything that might help me to get smarter and to improve the current method of my team. Thanks!! (TL;DR: read the bold parts)

• nomachine NX: Text missing on all gtk interface (Unity and Gnome Classic)

  [Edit] I later realized my issue only occurs when I am using NX to remote access my machine. Therefore I edited the title and description. I have also found the temp solution, which is to "disable render extension" in the custom display settings. But doing so makes the NX experience very slow laggy, and not that nice to look at. [/EDIT] I did a fresh install on a new computer, and was trying to setup my fonts. When I log in remotely via NX, my the text are missing on all gtk based interfaces. That means most menues (except for unity), right click menues, applications themselves, terminal, and so on. About the only thing unaffected is firefox. all the texts are showing just fine for firefox. So that probably already says something about text permissions. I went to check if my fonts have the correct permissions and they do. I removed my custom settings from /etc/fonts/config.d, and still the texts are missing. There is a work around by using "disable render extension" in the custom display settings. How do I fix this issue permanently?

• Reconciling vmware memory vs windows memory usage

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 64 bit virtual machine on ESXi 4.1 host. The host reports that the virtual machine is actively using less than 1 GB of memory. But, in Windows it's reporting the machine is using 7 GB of memory, even though the total of the processes listed in task manager is less than 1 GB. The machine is rather unresponsive and I'm concerned this is impacting other applications (server's purpose is to run ASP.NET state server process, which has been having trouble and led me to spot the memory question). I just noticed High memory usage Windows Server 2008r2 on VMware and will be looking through those documents more, but what is causing this?

• MySQL replicate multiple places

  Very trick task to find a good title for this question, but here goes the q: I have a few development machines, where I develop my PHP applications on, and testing via a local webserver. This works out pretty well for each machine. However, I would like to replicate the DB from my machines to a central location. So, to sum up: DEV1 - CENTRAL DEV2 - CENTRAL DEV3 - CENTRAL CENTRAL - DEV1 CENTRAL - DEV2 CENTRAL - DEV3 I hope this makes sense, as I cannot find an easy way to tell it. Basically, it is a 2-way replication, where all 4 databases contain the same info, and each of them can be updated locally, to then be pushed out to the others. Is this actually doable? All my dev machines are running Windows 7, and my central DB server is running CentOS 6.

• Stacks in C++

  So some more basics… One of the things you will be taught at any college after conquering arrays is different derivatives of collections. Stack is one of the simplest of those and very useful… A stack is a LIFO (last in first out) data structure and has at least two basic method calls – push & pop. Push, “pushes” an item on the top of the stack. Pop, removes the top most item off the stack. Because all elements on a stack are of the same type, one can use an array to implement a stack or a linked list. With the array based approach, the first element in a stack would be the first element in the array, the second on the stack would be the second on the array, etc. One limitation with an array implementation of a stack is that unless the array is dynamic, one would have to have a preset max stack size (based on the bounds of the array). Linked lists is another approach that gets past this boundary by allowing you to dynamically grow or shrink a collection of data. Stacks have many applications… a typical computer science example would be Postfix Expression Calculator, where the LIFO principle is maintained.

• Why nautilus quicklist is not working?

  None of my bookmarks (Documents, Pictures, Download, Dropbox, Ubuntu One, Music, Public) are correctly shown but they won't open if I right click on the Home icon and select them. The only ones who work are Home and Open A New Window. I've read similar questions (http://askubuntu.com/questions/184504/unity-home-quicklist-not-working-when-nautilus-is-closed and unity home quicklist not working) but my problem seems different... • About the External Graphics Card and CPU usage

  Hi, We are Rendering 16 live Streams at our client machine through one of our applications and the resolution of the video streams are as 4CIF/MPEG4/25FPS/4000Kbits. The configuration fo the client machine is below. HP Desktop Machine: Microsoft Windows XP Intel (R) Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00 GHz 2.99 GHz, 1.94 GB of RAM Intel (R) Q45/Q43 Series Express Chipset (Inbuild) The CPU usage of the machine peaks 99% for 16 straems. After some discussion, we had decided to install external graphics card to reduce the CPU usage. So that, we have tried following graphics cards. NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 - 128 MB Radeon HD 4350 - 512 MB GDDR2 Redeon HD 4350 - 1GB DDR2 ASUS EAH 4350 Silent 1GB DDR2 But the performance wise no difference, even worst. So, what is the pupuse of these external graphics cards? Really it will reduce the CPU usage? What parameters have to check, if we want to reduce the CPU usage? • VMPlayer 9, Xubuntu 12.10, Rails Development - Freezing frequently

  I have a new Vizio Ultrabook that came with Windows 7. I develop Rails applications, and it's a pain to do that in windows, so I setup a Xubuntu VM with 1GB ram and 2 CPU cores. I basically keep the VM open all the time and have enough memory not to worry. Sometimes I pause the VM. For the first few days, everything was fine. The fourth day, Xubuntu froze up while running a test (with Guard and RSpec). I didn't think much of it and restarted the VM and went on my way. The freezes started becoming more frequent, though. I don't think they are only when I run a test, but often they are. It'll happen quickly, too. Startup VM, save file, test runs, it freezes, all within 5 minutes. Of note: the VM is using a shared folder from Windows (where the code is). This may be the problem. Any other people experience something like this?
