• What is recommended minimum object size for gzip benefits?

  I'm working on improving page speed display times, and one of the methods is to gzip content from the webserver. Google recommends: Note that gzipping is only beneficial for larger resources. Due to the overhead and latency of compression and decompression, you should only gzip files above a certain size threshold; we recommend a minimum range between 150 and 1000 bytes. Gzipping files below 150 bytes can actually make them larger. We serve our content through Akamai, using their network for a proxy and CDN. What they've told me: Following up on your question regarding what is the minimum size Akamai will compress the requested object when sending it to the end user: The minimum size is 860 bytes. My reply: What is the reason(s) for why Akamai's minimum size is 860 bytes? And why, for example, is this not the case for files Akamai serves for facebook? (see below) Google recommends to gzip more agressively. And that seems appropriate on our site where the most frequent hits, by far, are AJAX calls that are <860 bytes. Akamai's response: The reasons 860 bytes is the minimum size for compression is twofold: (1) The overhead of compressing an object under 860 bytes outweighs performance gain. (2) Objects under 860 bytes can be transmitted via a single packet anyway, so there isn't a compelling reason to compress them. So I'm here for some fact checking. Is the 860 byte limit due to packet size the end of this reasoning? Why would high traffic sites push this lower/closer to the 150 byte limit... just to save on bandwidth costs, or is there a performance gain in doing so?

• Finding links among many written and spoken thoughts

  So... I am using a digital voice recorder to record anything I see important, ranging from business to private, from rants to new business ideas. Every finalized idea is one wma-file. I wrote a program to sort the wma-files into folders. From time to time I listen to the wma-files, convert them to text(manually) and insert them into a mindmap with mindmanager, which I sort hierarchically by area and type in turn. This works very well, no idea is being lost, when I am out of ideas for a special topic, I listen to what I said and can get started again. What could a search system look like that finds links between thoughts(written in the mindmap and in the wma files) or in general gives me good search results even when the keyword I searched for is not present but a synonym of it or related topic(for instance flower should output entries containing orchid aswell, even if they contain orchid but not the very keyword flower). I prefer something ready-made but small adjustments to a given system are fine aswell. How would you approach this task?

The files produced are smaller than if the pages are compressed separately because the compressor can extract and share redundant information accross multiple pages. Individually compressed DjVu pages can be assembled into multipage documents using the free package DjVuMulti. To assemble a bunch of DjVu images into a single BUNDLED document simply type: djvubundle page1.djvu page2.djvu.... pageN.djvu document.djvu To assemble a bunch of DjVu images into an INDIRECT document, type: djvujoin page1.djvu page2.djvu.... pageN.djvu documentdir/index.djvu where documentdir must be an existing directory where all the individual page files will be copied. To disassemble a BUNDLED document into an INDIRECT one, simply say: djvujoin document.djvu documentdir/indexfile.djvu To convert a multipage document from one of the old 2.0 multipage formats, do djvureindex olddocument newdocument The programs djvujoin, and djvubundle supersede the 2.0 programs djvuindex and djvumerge.   I was trying to upload a image to my picture library using sharepoint client object model. I Used the code from the below blog to upload a file to my picture library. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sridhara/archive/2010/03/12/uploading-files-using-client-object-model-in-sharepoint-2010.aspx The image got uploaded sucessfully. But when we took the relative url to update in a different list, we were getting empty image symbol. After a lot of analysis we figured out that the issue was with the file we uploaded. An image file which is of jpeg quality was uploaded to an application with giff extension. Try this. Copy a JPG file from net and save it to your file system. Change the extension of the file from jpg to giff. When you change the file extension the image quality remains same but it will open in picture viewers. Upload the file to your picture library. Once uploaded you will get the file listed as thumbail in your picture library. Click on the thumbnail image it will open up a page showing a larger image with file details. Now click either on the image or the file name hyper link, it will open up an empty page with default no image symbol. I wasted a lot of time on this figuring out the issue, so thought of sharing here. Hope this helps some one.

• Is it OK to use dynamic typing to reduce the amount of variables in scope?

  Often, when I am initializing something I have to use a temporary variable, for example: file_str = "path/to/file" file_file = open(file) or regexp_parts = ['foo', 'bar'] regexp = new RegExp( regexp_parts.join('|') ) However, I like to reduce the scope my variables to the smallest scope possible so there is less places where they can be (mis-)used. For example, I try to use for(var i ...) in C++ so the loop variable is confined to the loop body. In these initialization cases, if I am using a dynamic language, I am then often tempted to reuse the same variable in order to prevent the initial (and now useless) value from being used latter in the function. file = "path/to/file" file = open(file) regexp = ['...', '...'] regexp = new RegExp( regexp.join('|') ) The idea is that by reducing the number of variables in scope I reduce the chances to misuse them. However this sometimes makes the variable names look a little weird, as in the first example, where "file" refers to a "filename". I think perhaps this would be a non issue if I could use non-nested scopes begin scope1 filename = ... begin scope2 file = open(filename) end scope1 //use file here //can't use filename on accident end scope2 but I can't think of any programming language that supports this. What rules of thumb should I use in this situation? When is it best to reuse the variable? When is it best to create an extra variable? What other ways do we solve this scope problem?

Why is a spell checker important? By spell checking all your comments, you will make your documentation much easier to read. This means that instead of you being distracted by typographic errors, your mind will be free to see errors in what has been written. Remember the next person that has to struggle to read your code could well be yourself! So be kind to your self. Do the following: Document whole source files in VB.NET of C# with GhostDoc Pro Run Stylecop and fix the issues it uncovers. Run the spellchecker (when it is available) Add remarks where necessary Specify in the project to produce XML documentation Compile the XML using Sandcastle to help files Review the help files and ask yourself if the explanations are sufficient.

• How to overcome politics of the net (Google translate code refuses to work from a specific region)

  According to the FAQ's I am not sure if my question is a ok to ask or will be closed or should I post it in the meta or even I would blame some one for downvoting it. However it is one that has been bugging me since the trouble strated. Let me explain. I have this Web Site. On the site you can see that I had to actually remove the above from here, here, and here while left it here, here, here and here. This is so because the the web site "refuses" to load at all with the pages that have the code (i.e., from this region.) If I use Firefox Stealthy Plugin and open the site in Firefox, It works like a charm without any problems. But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?

• Tip: Recording Non-Maximized Applications in UPK

  Have you ever wanted to record an application that would not maximize, or an application that would look strange maximized? Or perhaps your Windows Desktop has become cluttered with icons and you don't want to capture the clutter in your recordings. Here's a tip that will help: create a background for your recording. Create a blank HTML file with a black background in your favorite HTML editor. Or download this sample file: UPK_Recording_Background.html (right click to save). If you would prefer a different color background in the sample file, open it in Notepad and change “#000” to a different HTML color. Open UPK_Recording_Background.html in its own web browser window. Press F11 to make the web browser window full screen. This should give you a completely black screen. (This works great in modern versions of the most popular browsers. I successfully used Firefox 15, Chrome 22, and IE 9. Open or switch to the desired application so that it sits on top of the full screen browser window. If the application you are recording is also in a browser, it is important that it be in a separate browser window from the UPK_Recording_Background.html. Record your topic normally. The above steps create a recording background using an HTML file and a web browser. This is just one method, for instance you could do the same thing with an image editor and an image viewer with a full screen view. • Fan always on and overheating problems on HP G62

  I have a HP G62 with i5 processor, 4G Ram and ATI HD 5470. Started using Ubuntu 4 months ago, first was 11.10 and after 12.04. Everything worked perfectly until some weeks ago when my cpu fan became "crazy" and I mean by this always on, noise and overheating problems, for sure if I put a glass with water in some minutes will boil (and I mean it). There can be a bug in the last kernel or any other Ubuntu's official update? And by the way CPU fan is cleaned like a new born baby; Used jupiter and all those stuff (lm-sensor, psensor...) - same problem; Don't ask me to install ATI drivers because will work like sh#t (interface laggy as HD 5470 isn't supported by Ubuntu) and I can't even open ATI Catalyst (error when I try to open it), more than this I always used open source drivers and as I said, worked perfectly (3d, effects). Right now I'm back to Windows and everything is working perfectly but my main problem is that I get used with Ubuntu and kinda weird to use windows again. I want back my nice and almost perfect Ubuntu. Thanks, Dave

• Why nautilus quicklist is not working?

  None of my bookmarks (Documents, Pictures, Download, Dropbox, Ubuntu One, Music, Public) are correctly shown but they won't open if I right click on the Home icon and select them. The only ones who work are Home and Open A New Window. I've read similar questions (http://askubuntu.com/questions/184504/unity-home-quicklist-not-working-when-nautilus-is-closed and unity home quicklist not working) but my problem seems different... • Can Clojure's thread-based agents handle c10k performance?

  I'm writing a c10k-style service and am trying to evaluate Clojure's performance. Can Clojure agents handle this scale of concurrency with its thread-based agents? Other high performance systems seem to be moving towards async-IO/events/greenlets, albeit at a seemingly higher complexity cost. Suppose there are 10,000 clients connected, sending messages that should be appended to 1,000 local files--the Clojure service is trying to write to as many files in parallel as it can, while not letting any two separate requests mangle the same single file by writing at the same time. Clojure agents are extremely elegant conceptually--they would allow separate files to be written independently and asynchronously, while serializing (in the database sense) multiple requests to write to the same file. My understanding is that agents work by starting a thread for each operation (assume we are IO-bound and using send-off)--so in this case is it correct that it would start 1,000+ threads? Can current-day systems handle this number of threads efficiently? Most of them should be IO-bound and sleeping most of the time, but I presume there would still be a context-switching penalty that is theoretically higher than async-IO/event-based systems (e.g. Erlang, Go, node.js). If the Clojure solution can handle the performance, it seems like the most elegant thing to code. However if it can't handle the performance then something like Erlang or Go's lightweight processes might be preferable, since they are designed to have tens of thousands of them spawned at once, and are only moderately more complex to implement. • Which is more important in a web application code promotion hierarchy? production environment to repo equivalence or unidirectional propagation?

  Lets say you have a code promotion hierarchy consisting of several environments, (the polar end) two of which are development (dev) and production (prod). Lets say you also have a web application where important (but not developer controlled) files are created (and perhaps altered) in the production environment. Lets say that you (or someone above you) decided that the files which are controlled/created/altered/deleted in the production environment needed to go into the repository. Which of the following two sets of practice / approaches do you find best: Committing these non-developed file modifications made in the production environment so that the repository reflects the production environment as closely and as often as possible. Generally ignoring the non-developed production environment alterations, placing confidence in backups to restore the production environment should it be harmed, and keeping a resolution to avoid pushing developments through the promotion hierarchy in the reverse direction (avoiding pushing from prod to dev), only committing the files found in the production environment if they were absolutely necessary in other environments for development. So, 1 or 2, and why? PS - I am currently slightly biased toward maintaining production environment to repository equivalence (option 1), but I keep an open mind and would accept an answer supporting either.

• Should we choose Java over C# or we should consider using Mono?

  We are a small team of independent developers with an average experience of 7 years in C#/.NET platform. We almost work on small to average web application projects that allows us to choose our favorite platform. I believe that our current platform (C#/.NET) allows us to be more productive than if we were working in Java but what makes me think about choosing Java over C# is the costs and the community (of the open source). Our projects allow us even work with various frameworks as well as various platforms. For example we can even use Nancy. So we are able to decrease the costs by using Mono which can be deployed on Linux servers. But I'm looking for a complete ecosystem (IDE/Platform/Production Environment) that decreases our costs and makes us feel completely supported by the community. As an example of issues I've experienced with MonoDevelop, I can refer to the poor support of the Razor syntax on MonoDevelop. As another example, We are using "VS 2012 Express for Web" as our IDE to decrease the costs but as you know it doesn't support plugins and I have serious problems with XML comments (I missed GhostDoc). We strongly believe in strongly-typed programming languages so please don't offer the other languages and platforms such as Ruby, PHP, etc. Now I want to choose between: Keep going on C#, buy some products and be hopeful about openness of .NET ecosystem and its open source community. • How do I get an application to appear as a choice in update-alternatives?

  I separately installed the Firefox Beta and Alpha channels, and have desktop configuration files pointing to them in ~/.local/share/applications. However, stable Firefox is being used as my default browser by the system. (Firefox Beta used to be used until I messed with the "Default Applications" in System Settings, where it is not listed.) I tried running sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser to manually change it, but it's only recognizing Chromium and Firefox (stable) and showing them as a choice. What can I do to get custom desktop configuration files in ~/.local/share/applications to be seen as default alternatives? I think I may have to fiddle with the desktop config files, or with mimeinfo.cache or mimeapps.list? Running Oneiric. • How to fix AVI index error

  I try to open an AVI file. The first software I tried is VLC media player. It reports some error about AVI index: This AVI file is broken. Seeking will not work correctly. Do you want to try to fix it? This might take a long time. I chose yes, and it began fixing AVI index and existed when the repair progress bar reaches 20% or so. Then the video started playing and stopped much earlier than when it is supposed to finish. Next I tried to open it in Totem Movie Player, which also stopped earlier at the same place as in VLC player. I tried to play it in GMplayer. Now the entire AVI file can be played from start to finish, but it is impossible to drag playing progress bar while it was possible in VLC player and Totem player. I heard that Avidemux can fix AVI index error, but later discovered it even failed to open the AVI file before it could try to fix the error. So I was wondering how I can fix the AVI index error, or at least drag the playing progress bar in GMplayer? Thanks and regards!

• Ubuntu 13.10 AMD/ATI proprietary driver slow boot time, lengthy login/logout delays

  Ubuntu 13.10 is causing me major headaches with my AMD/ATI HD 5770 GPU. Below is a list of problems I am currently encountering. 1) The boot time is extended by at least 25s after installing catalyst 13.4. Using open source radeon drivers, my boot time till the login screen is ~10s. With catalyst 13.4 installed, the boot time increases to ~35s. This was not the case in Ubuntu 13.04, 12.10 or 12.04. I have done the driver installation manually (instructions from wiki.cchtml.com) and using software center and there is no difference. I have not tried the catalyst 13.8 beta driver. 2) After manual installation of catalyst 13.4, I get stuck at a black screen after logging in. I have to purge fglrx to resolve the problem. I tried sudo amdconfig --initial -f but it didn't help. 3) The delay between logging in and unity being displayed is ~10-15s for BOTH open source and proprietary drivers. During the delay, it's just a black screen. Whenever I logout, there is again a ~10-15s delay with the login screen appearing stuck before lightdm allows me to enter my password again. This is ridiculous! Yes, I could stick with open source radeon drivers but I would like to install Steam and play my Valve collection on the machine. Is anybody else encountering similar issues?

• The best way to learn how to extend Orchard

  We do have tutorials on the Orchard site, but we can't cover all topics, and recently I've found myself more and more responding to forum questions by pointing people to an existing module that was solving a similar problem to the one the question was about. I really like this way of learning by example and from the expertise of others. This is one of the reasons why we decided that modules would by default come in source code form that we compile dynamically. it makes them easy to understand and easier to modify for your own purposes. Hackability FTW! But how do you crack open a module and look at what's inside? You can do it in two different ways. First, you can just install the module from the gallery, directly from your Orchard instance's admin panel. Once you've done that, you can just look into your Modules directory under the web site. There is now a subfolder with the name of the new module that contains a csproj that you can open in Visual Studio or add to your Orchard solution. Second, you can simply download the package (it's NuGet) and rename it to a .zip extension. NuGet being based on Zip, this will open just fine in Windows Explorer: What you want to dig into is the Content/Modules/[NameOfTheModule] folder, which is where the actual code is. If I use Firefox Stealthy Plugin and open the site in Firefox, It works like a charm without any problems. But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?

Therefore I will have to do some of the work on my own. I want to piece things (plugins/mods/etc) on top of a standard forum platform to give it the features I need. For this purpose, I want to use a mature product with widespread userbase, active community and lots of plugin options. I believe most will agree that my options therefore are: vBulletin phpBB SMF Here are the questions: Which one of the three above offers the easier path towards the desired goal? Which one of the three above has the most advanced features related to the desired goal? Of course I dont expect anyone to know these answers cut and dry. I am hoping to hear some experiences and see some examples. Also, it would be great if both those questions had the same answer, but I am not going to get my hopes up... PS: I wish I could add the tags "phpbb" and "smf" ;)
