• Windows 2003 Server Suddenly Drops Connections to everything but PING and port 80 (webserver)

  Hi, I'm running a Windows 2003 Dedicated server, and the box has been rock solid for more than 2 years now. Just recently, I have had an issue where after a certain ammount of time the server will just stop accepting connections on all ports except 80, and still responds to pings. If you surf to a static HTML page on the box, you can display it. If you pull up a PHP file that has an outside database connection, it fails. RDP refuses to connect, and LogMeIn reports that "The connection was reset" The only fix at this time is to have the provider physically reboot my box to correct the issue. The event log doesn't seem to be leaving helpful messages, and I am at a lost to what is causing this error since I have not installed any new software in months on it. Any tips or help would be appreciated to tracking down this issue. I don't mind updating the question as responses come in, I just do not know where to start troubleshooting because it seems random at this time.

• Remote desktop on Mac

  I just started a job using a Mac. I also have a Mac at home. The IT dpt here does not know how to remote login to my desktop from home. They installed the Cisco VPN client and game an account for that. I think at this point I need some remote desktop software to login to my work Machine. I looked online and downloaded the free version of TeamViewer. I didn't really understand how to use it. I have my work computer's name, and was hoping that would be enough to login, but I think I am mising a piece of the puzzle. Any thoughts on how to login to my work computer? Thanks.

• Upgrading Ubuntu(32 bit) 10.10 -> 11.04 fails and causes a kernel panic on boot

  On Ubuntu 10.10 machine Upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 using the update manager. The upgrade fails and leaves the system in an unstable state. When I reboot the system I get a kernel panic on boot. The error points to /opt/abc/runtime/lib/libc.so.6. By researching on this I found that there is a third party software abc causes problem. It has it's own runtime(libc) library. In /lib/ directory there is a link file /lib/ld-abc.so.2 ---/opt/abc/runtime/lib/ld-linux.so.2. If we rename this file to /lib/abc.so.2 or remove this file the the upgrade is success. Here is the upgrade log of where it crashes(apt-term.log) ===== Services restarted successfully. Processing triggers for libc-bin ... ldconfig deferred processing now taking place /usr/bin/dpkg: /opt/abc/runtime/lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.11' not found (required by /usr/bin/dpkg) /usr/bin/dpkg: /opt/abc/runtime/lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.8' not found (required by /lib/libselinux.so.1) ===== Could you please let me know what would be the problem of having a run time link library file in /lib directory. • Cent OS upgrade PHP

  I'm in the midst of resolving a bunch of security issues on a clients server to get them compliant with credit card laws and such. The first order of business is getting php from 5.2.14 to 5.2.16. When I run yum update php, this is the output I get: Excluding Packages from CentOS-5 - Addons Finished Excluding Packages from CentOS-5 - Base Finished Excluding Packages from CentOS-5 - Extras Finished Excluding Packages from CentOS-5 - Updates Finished Setting up Update Process No Packages marked for Update I'm fairly new to CentOS, but with Debian/Ubuntu, you can add PPAs to allow new software packages. Is there something similar for CentOS? This output makes it look like it's ignoring all the main package repos as well.

• Unreliable resume from suspend?

  My desktop PC (home-built) resumes from suspend somewhat unreliably. I'd say that it resumes successfully about 85-90% of the time and hangs with a blank screen 5-10% of the time. As far as I can tell, the success or failure of the resume is completely random. I doubt it's a software problem because I triple boot Windows 7, Windows XP and Ubuntu and it's similar under all 3 operating systems. If it matters, my system is overclocked, though other than the resume-from-suspend issue, it's definitely rock stable. What are some of the obvious suspects that would cause random, sporadic failures to resume from suspend?

• SSH disconnects active session after 20 minutes

  I’ve just set up a new Linux box (OpenSuSE 12.3 on VmWare). Now I stated that my SSH shell sessions are disconnected exactly after 20 minutes, clearly with activity. (Putty: “Network error: Software caused connection abort”) I already set Putty to send keep alives every 64 sec. In sshd_config, I set ClientAliveInterval 50 ClientAliveCountMax 2 and did a deamon reload. Didn’t help. About two minutes after the link breakdown, ssh reports to /var/log/messages: … … sshd[…]: Timeout, client not responding. … … sshd[…]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session closed for user root I don’t encounter this behaviour when connecting to other virtual machines, so I guess the problem isn’t in the network. Any help is appreciated.

• What gaming keyboard(s) will work with Ubuntu?

  I've been looking at gaming keyboards to use on Ubuntu system. Microsoft has a few popular ones (e.g., Sidewinder X4, X6), but the programmable function keys appear to be unusable without the Windows software. (Though here's a post from someone who has a more recent project that uses usbmon and xdotool to add functions to some keys.) Another choice in my budget is the Cyborg V.05. It seems about right for my needs, but I would be depressed having a bunch of useless, nonprogrammable keys on it. Logitech has some models (e.g., the Logitech G110), though again I expect that the extensive macro capabilities (which I don't need) would be lost under Linux. There's a project called g15tools which has some code to work with older Logitech gaming models, but I don't know what the current status is. Last entry there was in March 2010. There are also a number of very old posts around the internet with regard to the Logitech G11 and G15. Compatibility with the current keyboards, Ubuntu version, and Linux kernel are suspect. I'm in the U.S., and so it appears that few of the Roccat keyboards are available, and they're over-priced. Support might be OK for these, though -- there's a short Phoronix article about Roccat improving their Linux support, and there's also a project and webpage for "Using Roccat Hardware with Linux". Honestly, the only feature I have to have is good backlighting for the keys, and if it's not wired (which is fine), the wireless capability should function. I could probably live with dead function keys, as long as they weren't in places that would interfere with things like Unity/compiz shortcuts. Any experience or suggestions? I've not seen much to inspire confidence with programmable/macro keys. There is a thread (with no solutions) on the Sidewinder X4 on ubuntuforums here. I'm also considering the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard as a possibility, even though it's not specifically a gaming keyboard. It is backlit, and it's supposed to be a nice keyboard.

• TOP CPU usage for whole system

  I am using a machine that has using cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep processor | wc -l returning 8 I am trying to load the server using a load generator that I wrote, and capture the behaviour of TOP command for idle (as the software that is tested on server runs on ROOT). Doing the load as an increasing step function, I capture the idle state every second, and see the result. Strange thing is that when I increase the load every 1 minute, the idle state is infact increasing (??). This honestly does not make sense .. I thought with more load, the idle state will decrease, and the cpu usage will increase. Is there any reasonable explanation for this behaviour, maybe for the server utilization itself? Thanks for any feedback -- ok, no idea for the down vote. but I try to find this behaviour a lot, can not find any reasonable things to explain this ..

• Any Windows based OpenID servers out there? [closed]

  I've been looking to setup an OpenID server for a special project, but haven't found any workable OpenID server software packages. Originally was looking for a *nix solution, and found several, but they all had some kind of issue. So far I've tried JOIDS, community-id, and a couple others I unfortunately can't remember the names of. I've also come to the conclusion that even if I had managed to get one of those going that the management/upgrade cycles would have placed undue burden on the company (only a couple part time sysadmins with *nix knowledge, the day to day people are primarily Windows). So, I'm hoping that there's a Windows one out that will be functional that someone knows about and will be easy for a minimal support environment...

• Virtual bridge/switch for Windows server&client?

  I can't find a very simple application, with litle to zero configuration on both client and server side which would help one computer to bring other computers on an existing private LAN. OpenVPN seems like an overkill for this type of thing, and is really hard to get running or debug by various clueless people trying to connect. Does such a software exist? It's very odd not to. THe Windows provided VPN (PPTP over TCP and GRE) is not what I'm looking for because it is often filtered by ISPs. Only TCP and UDP solutions pls. Encryption is not needed.

• How to work as a team of two

  I work in a team of 2 developers, my partner is the founder of the company, in the beginning he did everything on his own. He hired me about 3 years ago to help him get things done quicker and satisfy our customer needs. Often I get small project to do all by my own, as long as it works great (and it usually does...) he doesn't care much on what I did or how I did it. But if the customer calls him up asking why something doesn't work as expected and I'm not around to forward the call to me, he could get very angry on why he doesn't have an idea on how that program works. I don't keep anything as a secret, if he asks me on something how I did it I'm happy to explain as long as he's willing to listen (which isn't long), but I don't know why I need to say it in first place, in developing software everything is written down clearly. Most of the time I work on projects he wrote and I don't need to ask him anything (it happens maybe once a month that I ask him how something works, just because I don't have the time to look it up). I've read a lot on that great site about small teams that usually means 7-12 people. I couldn't find how 2 people work as a team; we don't have project managers, reviewers or testers. I feel that the fact he don't have time to review the code on his own is not my problem, so the question here is am I doing something rung? I need to walk over to him and give him a lecture on what I did even he doesn't ask me?

• How to fundamentally approach creating a 'financial planner' application?

  I want to create a financial planning application (for personal use), for which the overall functionality will be this: User (me..) can create different 'scenarios'. Each scenario is configured with different incomings/outgoings. Scenarios can be 'explored' in a calendar format with projections taking into account tax, interest (on both debt and savings) and so on and so forth. My problem lies in how to fundamentally approach the project. I've considered: When creating incomings/outgoings for a script to apply them to each day in a 'days' table of a database, acting as a method of caching. This means that if I wanted to look at January 14th, 2074 there aren't thousands of cycles of calculations to run through and the result can just be pulled. Do each calculation dynamically, but again, I'm finding it hard to visuallize how I would handle different tax allowances (I'm based in the UK by the way), payrises and 'changes' to my incomings/outgoings. I've sat on this for a couple of days and am struggling to come up with an elegant approach to my problem. There may well be software out there that does what I'm looking to do (in fact I'm sure it is) but I would like to develop this myself for learning purposes, to be able to add it to my personal life 'toolset' and to allow me to expand on it in the future. • New Vaio laptop, performing a fresh install

  I just purchased a new Sony Vaio laptop (z-series) but being a bit of a power user I really want to get rid of the software which is installed on it. I can go through the Programs and Features and manually select each item I want to get rid of, but it's a really tedious process. I'd much prefer to have a clean Windows install which I can then tweak from the get go. But it doesn't appear that I received a Windows 7 install disc (I bought it through a large reseller so it isn't dodgy as far as I know). I do have the Windows 7 licence key on my laptop underside, will this be valid if I use a Windows 7 install disc from work? Or should I have the Windows 7 disk and I need to go back to the reseller?

• How to check the OS is running on bare metal and not in virtualized environment created by BIOS?

  Is there any software available as a Linux, *BSD, or Windows program or boot-image to check (or guess with good probability) the environment an operating system is loaded onto is genuine bare metal and not already virtualized? Given recent information from various sources, including supposed to be E.Snowden leaks, I'm curious about the security of my PC-s, even about those that don't have on-board BMC. How it could be possible and why? See for example Blue Pill, and a number of papers. With a little assistance from network card firmware, which is also loadable on popular card models, such hypervisor could easily spy on me resulting in PGP, Tor, etc. exercises futile.

• Is there a good, free way to fix broken/corrupt .wmv files?

  I've recovered some files from an hdd that weren't supposed to be deleted in the first place, but they have seeking problems/crash the players. Since they have the right size, I'm thinking it might be a problem of corrupt index/header, so I'm trying to find a way to fix them. It's easy to find examples on how to fix corrupt .avi files with mencoder, but .wmv seems trickier. Also, I realize there might not be a way to fix these files, but I figure I might as well as try. As far as players go, I've tried opening it with vlc/mplayer/windows media player. I can use anything on Windows XP/7 and Ubuntu, as long as it's free. Since the files are 200mb+ and there are quite a few, I don't think trial software would work.

• Bug: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at

  I have recently installed new system on my disc, Ubuntu 12.04. Installation proceeded without problems, I started installing additional software and put data from other discs. I had already two times bug report, it was quite long, and I have no idea how to acces to log file (which probably is somewhere saved) and since I had to switch off the computer using the button, anything else was possible, here is just a small part of it (what I've noted on paper) could not write bytes: Broken pipe speach dicpatcher disabled: edit etc/default/speach-dispatcher saned disabled: edit .... and than: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000009c I've run Memory test in GRUB, everything is fine. First time it occured when I was using rsync, second time when I was trying to install texlive. Should I install whole system once again? Or can it be hardware problem? Or something else? If there is any hardware details which may be relevant, please ask, since I have no idea what is happening, I don't know what kind of information could be useful. Thanks P.S. dmesg output:

• Is there a PROPRIETARY driver (NVIDIA or ATI) that actually works with 12.10?

  NOTE: I see many similar topics on this, but I've tried all their suggestions, and nothing has worked. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE SEEMS TO BE: I always get a black screen with a blinking cursor, while others seem to get through the boot-up and see distorted graphics or just their wallpaper. ISSUE: I do a clean install of Ubuntu 12.10. Boots fine with the “nouveau” graphics driver – graphics (even just menus) are very slow, choppy, and distorted. The three other driver options in Ubuntu (official NVIDIA drivers), all result in a variation of the black screen on boot up. There will be NO access to a command line/GUI in anyway what-so-ever (tried every option recommended out there, but the system is unusable at this stage). I can only reinstall, and try different drivers…and I only ever get one shot at it. QUESTIONS: -Does anyone know of a PROPRIETARY driver that will actually work on 12.10 with a NVIDIA or ATI card? -Should I just buy a newer graphics card to put in as a replacement? MORE INFO: This is my second computer, and I’m just trying to get a working install of Ubuntu on it. I don’t want to put much money into it, as I have seen Ubuntu run great on much older/less capable machines. I’ve got a decent'ish Core2Duo Intel processor (2.13Ghz), 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive, 32-bit architecture, and there is no other O/S installed. It appears as if the graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce 7350 LE) is holding me back. TRIED SO FAR: -all drivers available in Ubuntu *all fail -manual install of some different NVIDIA drivers *all fail -also tried installing the generic kernel, Nvidia driver doesn't work in 12.10 *no difference -tried installing 12.04 *same results -every method suggested to at least get a command line after switching to a NVIDIA driver *all fail -UPDATE- Re-tried everything above with a new NVIDIA Geforce 210...same results for everything. -UPDATE #2- Re-tried everything above with a new AMD Radeon HD 6450...installed the proprietary driver from Ubuntu's "Software Sources" menu...EVERYTHING NOW WORKS. • Switching to Chrome from IE

  Hi, I work in IT at a school and we recently updated our database software, however the web access that the teachers use to do registration does not work too well with Internet Explorer 7 and we're thinking about switching to chrome (mostly due to me hating IE in general) but the problem we have is that users are unable to migrate their bookmarks over from IE due to account restrictions, is there any way to get this working? A bit of info about the system if it could be helpful; Almost all the client PCs are running Win XP SP2. My colleagues machines are running Windows 7, I use OS X Snow Leopard and most of out servers are running windows server 2003 (with the exception of 2 one on 2000 server and another on 2008 R2). • How to patch Solaris

  I have Solaris 10 and 11 running on my system. I want to update all of them to newest patch. I don't have license or support plan for Solaris yet (the OS is pre-installed on my server). On Solaris 11 I heard I need a support license and a cert to connect to Oracle software repository. What about Solaris 10? Can I fetch patch bundle and install it without connect to Oracle (for both Solaris 10 and 11)? TIA.

  I have fibre broadband with speeds up to 38mbs, my Dell D600 has its max 2gb ram and has an ATI Mobility RADEON 9000 4xAGP 32mb card in it...Its TV support it says is NTSC or PAL in S-video and composite modes with a 7-pin mini-DIN connector (optional S-video to composite video adapter cable) and a vga port which i am using at the moment... The laptop runs Windows XP, an 80g HD with only windows + necessary updates and anti virus software on it..... There is HDMI on the TV, but not the laptop Fairly slow moving and close up pictures arent too bad, but when the movment is fast(a shot on goal) or in the distance, I cant see the ball and the images go out of focus.

  I download and listen to podcasts on 2 different computers. I would like so somehow sync the metadata such that, when I subscribe to a feed it gets subscribed on my other computer also. When I've downloaded a podcast it gets marked as downloaded on the other machine also. Is there a software + webservice combination that will allow me to do this. That will save its doings to the cloud and update it also? My one machine is Windows and the other one Linux.

• Url-based web site publishing on Windows Server platform

  I have a Windows 2008 Enterprise SP2 server in a datacenter. It is 32bit OS. I need to be able to do a "smart" url-based web site publishing. So that with a single external IP I can publish many sites on port 80, and some firewall logic resolves, based on a requested URL, which site in IIS gets the request. Forefront TMG 2010 has this feature, but it is not supported on 32bit systems. Is there a software solution that can satissfy my need on Windows 2K8 platform? Thank you. P.S. Perhaps there is a workaround or a tweak to do what I need in IIS?
