  • Jobs asking for web design and development skills, should it be doubling the pay? [closed]

    Should you demand twice as much money if the job's asking for two different sets of skills such as graphic design and computer programming? Sure you won't be doing 16 hours of work a day, but we all know that so much of the time is spent on communication between designers and developers, and if the designer and the developer is the same person, it would take way less time, and hence I think the pay should be doubled. If not double, how much more should you ask for? How much are employers usually willing to pay for such a polymath position? If you are hiring, would you prefer one polymath person or two specialists at the same cost?

  • How can I force new windows to open in background & without focus?

    I have Opera set as my default browser but it is the same for Firefox. When opening a link in Liferea, the link opens in an external browser and the browser gets focus. I would like to open the links in background (so that the browser does not get focus). The only solution is to set Focus prevention level to Normal in the Focus & Raise Behaviour tab of General options in CCSM. But this messes things for other things. DO you have any other idea how to prevent new windows to have focus? I am using Unity on 11.10.

  • How do I migrate web files from a Plesk 8 installation (on a slaved HDD) to a Plesk 10.4.4 installation?

    Due to Plesk 8 being at End of Support our host setup a new installation of RHEL and Plesk 10 on a new hard drive. They then slaved the old drive to the new so that we could migrate all our files using SSH. I am having challenges correctly migrating the sub domain files. The path to subdomain root folder in Plesk 10.4.4 is confusing as I don't know where to copy the files to. The path to the files on the slaved drive is: "/mnt/old-drive/var/www/vhosts/domain_name.com/subdomains/SUBDOMAIN_NAME/", meanwhile on the new installation I have "/var/www/vhosts/SUBDOMAIN_NAME.domain_name.com". There is an httpdocs folder in the '/var/www/vhosts/domain_name' folder but none in the '/var/www/vhosts/SUBDOMAIN_NAME.domain_name.com' folder. Where do I copy my subdomain files to? Please help.

  • Lots of files being used by blank web page. What are they?

    I am trying to optimise a website and I was using the network waterfall facility in Google Chrome. When I looked at the results there were lots of files which I didnt recognise. I first thought they might be something to do with Google Chrome itself, so I put a blank HTML file on my desktop and checked but there was nothing in the waterfall except the file itself. So I put a blank file on my server and I got the output below. What are all these files, are they all necessary, is this normal and do I need to be in any way concerned. My hosting provider has always been excellent in every regard that I'm aware of. My host is shared hosting, using cpanel and is based on a LAMP server. I also note that a couple of those file have problems but I have no idea how to fault find that or whether it's a concern. EDIT: I have cleared the cache so I don't think it's a browser cache issue.

    I would like to earn a little money for realizing a good, simple project. My idea is to build a website for learning of chosen by me language (for users knowing English) using mnemonics. Users would be encourage to enter English words with translation to another language and describing the way, how to remember a foreign language word (an association link). Example: if I choose learning Spanish for people who knows English well, it would look like that: every user would be encourage to enter a way to remember a chosen by him/her Spanish word. So he/she would enter to the dictionary (my site database) ,e.g., English word: beach - playa (Spanish word). Then he/she would describe the method to remember Spanish word, e.g., "Image that U r on the beach and U play volleyball" - we have the word play and recall playa (mnemonics). I would like to give possibility of pic hotlinks, encourage for fun or little shocking memory links which is -- in the art of memory -- good. I would choose a language to take a niche of Google Search. The big question is if I don't lose my time on it?? (Maybe I need to find prototype way to check that idea?)

  • In the world of .Net, managed code and the web is there still a place for VBA?

    Microsoft has moved away from the COM stack, VB6 is so last century and .Net rules the (MS) roost. Yet I find myself still banging out reams of VBA code - for a new project automating Excel seeing as you ask. I've tried to doing the same kind of thing using VSTO and it was just too damn buggy/hard/inefficient with a broken development model. I can't get rid of the feeling that I'm missing something, OTOH I really can't see a better way of solving this problem. What are your thoughts?

    Silverlight has a method called HtmlPage.PopupWindow() that opens new web browser window with a specific page. You can find this method in the namespace System.Windows.Browser. If you haven’t in your project, add a reference to System.Windows.Browser.     I've written an extension to RequestTracker for a client, but he says the performance isn't good enough. I'd like to do some profiling, but I'm not sure how to connect up a profiler (say NYTProf, for example)? I tried what the man page says and put PerlModule Devel::NYTProf::Apache in my apache config, but all I get in the results are Apache2:XSLoader, Devel::NYTProf::Apache and ModPerl::Util modules in the results, and neither my own nor RT's modules.

  • Is there an open source solution that I can host on a web server that will allow users to anonymously upload a file to me?

    I'm looking for some kind of web application I can host on my Linux web server that will allow users to upload files of arbitrary size to me from their browser without requiring them to log in. Ideally this application would allow me to generate a link to my website that allowed for a one-time use upload. It might contain a unique, random key that was only good for that session. I could email them the link, they click it and are taken to a page where they can upload their file to me. I'm mainly targeting friends and family that need to send me files that are too large for email. I don't want to require them to install anything (dropbox), sign up and log in, etc. I'm definitely not teaching them to use FTP. This wouldn't be a difficult project for me to roll on my own but I'd like to take something off the shelf if it is possible. Does anything like this exist that my google-foo isn't turning up?

  • Mobile web app, styling in percentages; I can't get height to work [migrated]

    I am building a mobile app for a band and obviously want it to display well in all the plethora of handsets out there today. I built it at first for my own device and it looks and works great, so now I am reworking it in percentages so that it works in all devices. I have a slider (jquerytools) going on and if i set width to 100% then it is perfectly wide in my iphone and my ipad... success, however I am not having any luck with height. It seems to only accept a height in px.     As asked in a previous question, I'm looking to create a small MMO that will be deployed onto GAE. I'm confused about what technologies I could use for the user interface, I've considered the following JSP Pages - I've got experience with JSP/JSTL and I would find this easy to work with, it would require the user having to "submit" the page each time they perform an action so may become a little clumsey for players. Applet - I could create an applet that sits on the front end and communicates to the back end game engine, however I'm not sure how good this method would be and have not used applets since university.. What other options do I have? I don't have any experience in Flash/Flex so there would be a big learning curve there. Are there any other Java based options I may be able to use? My game will be text based, I may use some images, but I'm not intending to have any animations/graphics etc Thanks

    Is there a stable way of accessing Google Docs (application) from my desktop without having to use a browser on Windows? On my accepted answer... While I did stipulate that I wanted to not use my browser, I didn't really mean I wanted to avoid browser technology. I meant I didn't want to open my browser, type in the web address for google docs, etc. TheTXI's answer required me to download/install nothing more than what I already had (Chrome) to acheive this. It created a desktop icon (similar to an application) that launches me right into my docs (similar to an application), without extra browser-items on the screen. This was an excellent suggestion, and won by virtue of parsimony.
