• Hardware Emulator / Simulator for Winforms .Net Application

  I have a WinForms .Net HMI software which talks to hardware over USB. I check for communication with the hardware at Load time and if communication is active then run it (The hardware manufacturer has provided a communication library to talk over USB). I want to build an emulator for cases when communication with hardware is not possible (not connected) and want the software to run in simulated mode by providing dummy values for different states of hardware. Has anyone implemented something similar? Any pointers will be helpful. Are there any design patterns to handle such implementations. TIA

• Trouble using Loader, can't access properties of loaded swf

  May not have asked question correctly so I’m asking again. I’m using Flash AS3 with code in actions layer. Main movieclip onstage is : design_mc. Within it is a movieclip already in place onstage with an instance name clipart_mc. Now I’m also loading a ListBox to the stage and each time a selection is made from listbox myLoader9 is used to load selected .swf into design_mc.clipArt_mc. Now within each of the .swf files loaded into design_mc.clipArt_mc there is a mc I’d like to color transform called color_mc. So now the listbox is onstage and I make a selection that places heart.swf inside of design_mc.clipArt_mc. I want to access heart.swf so I did this: var child:DisplayObject = myLoader9.content.contentLoaderInfo.content.color_mc; var colorTrans3:ColorTransform = new ColorTransform(); var trans3:Transform = new Transform(child); I still can not get to heart.swf. Why is it loading this particular symbol while processing libgslcblasMD.lib which is a 3rd party library? Or am I reading it wrong? It seems that the linker is going through the symbols referenced in the project's various object files, but I have no idea in what order. It then searches the static libraries the project uses - by project reference, explicit import and automatic default library imports; but it does so in an order that, again, seems arbitrary to me. And what's the deal with all those libraries being processed at the beginning of the linker's work, but not finding any symbols to load from them? Does this project really not use anything from msvcrt.lib, kernel32.lib? Seems unlikely. So basically I'm looking to decipher the underlying order in the linker's operation.

• Any good lightbox for a modal dialog?

  There are thousands of lightbox components and the likes. I've looked at about 10 of them, but couldn't find what I need. Just wondering if anyone know a lightbox like component that: can popup an inline div (that is initially hidden) can be modal (eg. you must select a radio button or you can't close the box) can be called dynamically, eg. so that I can call Popup('myDiv'); on page load without the user clicking anything has sufficient documentation/examples to allow me do the above easily Thanks in advance

  From my understanding from reading about ASP.NET asynchronous pages, the method which executes when the asynchronous task begins ALWAYS EXECUTES between the prerender and the pre-render Complete events. So because the page's controls' events run between the page's load and prerender events, is it true that whatever the begin task handler (handler for BeginAsync below) produces, it can't be used in the controls' events? So for example, if the handler gets data from a database, the data can't be used in any of the controls' postback events? Would you bind data to a data control after prerender?   Hi, Could anyone please help me with this? I have a web page using .manifest for offline storage caching. In that page, I use jQuery ajax call to get the data from the server. If I first load the page, it is OK. I can switch between Online and Offline. But the problem is when I go back online and refresh the page. jQuery ajax cannot be able to talk to server anymore. Is there a way to for ajax to talk to the server or clear offline cache? • JavaOne Afterglow by Simon Ritter

  Last week was the eighteenth JavaOne conference and I thought it would be a good idea to write up my thoughts about how things went. Firstly thanks to Yoshio Terada for the photos, I didn't bother bringing a camera with me so it's good to have some pictures to add to the words. Things kicked off full-throttle on Sunday.  We had the Java Champions and JUG leaders breakfast, which was a great way to meet up with a lot of familiar faces and start talking all things Java.  At midday the show really started with the Strategy and Technical Keynotes.  This was always going to be tougher job than some years because there was no big shiny ball to reveal to the audience.  With the Java EE 7 spec being finalised a few months ago and Java SE 8, Java ME 8 and JDK8 not due until the start of next year there was not going to be any big announcement.  I thought both keynotes worked really well each focusing on the things most important to Java developers: Strategy One of the things that is becoming more and more prominent in many companies marketing is the Internet of Things (IoT).  We've moved from the conventional desktop/laptop environment to much more mobile connected computing with smart phones and tablets.  The next wave of the internet is not just billions of people connected, but 10s or 100s of billions of devices connected to the network, all generating data and providing much more precise control of almost any process you can imagine.  This ties into the ideas of Big Data and Cloud Computing, but implementation is certainly not without its challenges.  As Peter Utzschneider explained it's about three Vs: Volume, Velocity and Value.  All these devices will create huge volumes of data at very high speed; to avoid being overloaded these devices will need some sort of processing capabilities that can filter the useful data from the redundant.  The raw data then needs to be turned into useful information that has value.  To make this happen will require applications on devices, at gateways and on the back-end servers, all very tightly integrated.  This is where Java plays a pivotal role, write once, run everywhere becomes essential, having nine million developers fluent in the language makes it the defacto lingua franca of IoT.  There will be lots more information on how this will become a reality, so watch this space. Technical How do we make the IoT a reality, technically?  Using the game of chess Mark Reinhold, with the help of people like John Ceccarelli, Jasper Potts and Richard Bair, showed what you could do.  Using Java EE on the back end, Java SE and JavaFX on the desktop and Java ME Embedded and JavaFX on devices they showed a complete end-to-end demo. This was really impressive, using 3D features from JavaFX 8 (that's included with JDK8) to make a 3D animated Duke chess board.  Jasper also unveiled the "DukePad" a home made tablet using a Raspberry Pi, touch screen and accelerometer. Although the Raspberry Pi doesn't have earth shattering CPU performance (about the same level as a mid 1990s Pentium), it does have really quite good GPU performance so the GUI works really well.  The plans are all open sourced and available here.  One small, but very significant announcement was that Java SE will now be included with the NOOB and Raspbian Linux distros provided by the Raspberry Pi foundation (these can be found here).  No more hassle having to download and install the JDK after you've flashed your SD card OS image.  The finale was the Raspberry Pi powered chess playing robot.  Really very, very cool.  I talked to Jasper about this and he told me each of the chess pieces had been 3D printed and then he had to use acetone to give them a glossy finish (not sure what his wife thought of him spending hours in the kitchen in a gas mask!)  The way the robot arm worked was very impressive as it did not have any positioning data (like a potentiometer connected to each motor), but relied purely on carefully calibrated timings to get the arm to the right place.  Having done things like this myself in the past I know how easy it is to find a small error gets magnified into very big mistakes.   I have a situation, I am working on a XtraReport where I am pulling some data from table.Now I created a function and passing a parameter at runtime for the report to generate. But when I fire the function event from a Onclick Button the result is perfect but when I fire the same function event on the page load of the ReportViewer ..I do not get the result. About function , i am creating dataset, and adapter with Sqlquery from runtime passing the parameter value from a session in the query and binding the data to the labels. But as I said I want the result on the pageload event of the reportviewer.

• Visual Studio / Visual Source Safe / Integrated Security / IIS 7

  Using Visual Source Safe with IIS integration (the working dir is the IIS site) Visual Studio, pointed to the IIS site would load up the Web project. It would be under VSS control (have to check out files, etc). Recently, we had to switch to Integrated Security for our database connections from the web app. This means changing the impersonation of the IIS app pool (and anon authentication) to the impersonated account. Since I did this -- my project loads in Visual Studio, but it acts as if I'm not me, and the files aren't under source control anymore. I'm going to assume it's something with the pass-through from IIS to the VSS (as if you'll remember you had to add IIS_USERS to the VSS list of users). Even trying to add the impersonated account didn't work. Any ideas?

• SQL SERVER – CXPACKET – Parallelism – Usual Solution – Wait Type – Day 6 of 28

  CXPACKET has to be most popular one of all wait stats. I have commonly seen this wait stat as one of the top 5 wait stats in most of the systems with more than one CPU. Books On-Line: Occurs when trying to synchronize the query processor exchange iterator. You may consider lowering the degree of parallelism if contention on this wait type becomes a problem. CXPACKET Explanation: When a parallel operation is created for SQL Query, there are multiple threads for a single query. Each query deals with a different set of the data (or rows). Due to some reasons, one or more of the threads lag behind, creating the CXPACKET Wait Stat. There is an organizer/coordinator thread (thread 0), which takes waits for all the threads to complete and gathers result together to present on the client’s side. The organizer thread has to wait for the all the threads to finish before it can move ahead. The Wait by this organizer thread for slow threads to complete is called CXPACKET wait. Note that not all the CXPACKET wait types are bad. You might experience a case when it totally makes sense. There might also be cases when this is unavoidable. If you remove this particular wait type for any query, then that query may run slower because the parallel operations are disabled for the query. Reducing CXPACKET wait: We cannot discuss about reducing the CXPACKET wait without talking about the server workload type. OLTP: On Pure OLTP system, where the transactions are smaller and queries are not long but very quick usually, set the “Maximum Degree of Parallelism” to 1 (one). This way it makes sure that the query never goes for parallelism and does not incur more engine overhead. EXEC sys.sp_configure N'cost threshold for parallelism', N'1' GO RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE GO Data-warehousing / Reporting server: As queries will be running for long time, it is advised to set the “Maximum Degree of Parallelism” to 0 (zero). This way most of the queries will utilize the parallel processor, and long running queries get a boost in their performance due to multiple processors. EXEC sys.sp_configure N'cost threshold for parallelism', N'0' GO RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE GO Mixed System (OLTP & OLAP): Here is the challenge. The right balance has to be found. I have taken a very simple approach. I set the “Maximum Degree of Parallelism” to 2, which means the query still uses parallelism but only on 2 CPUs. However, I keep the “Cost Threshold for Parallelism” very high. This way, not all the queries will qualify for parallelism but only the query with higher cost will go for parallelism. I have found this to work best for a system that has OLTP queries and also where the reporting server is set up. Here, I am setting ‘Cost Threshold for Parallelism’ to 25 values (which is just for illustration); you can choose any value, and you can find it out by experimenting with the system only. In the following script, I am setting the ‘Max Degree of Parallelism’ to 2, which indicates that the query that will have a higher cost (here, more than 25) will qualify for parallel query to run on 2 CPUs. This implies that regardless of the number of CPUs, the query will select any two CPUs to execute itself. EXEC sys.sp_configure N'cost threshold for parallelism', N'25' GO EXEC sys.sp_configure N'max degree of parallelism', N'2' GO RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE GO Read all the post in the Wait Types and Queue series. • Encoding issues with Spring and Freemarker

  I'm working on a project using Freemarker and Spring running on Jetty. It will involve displaying characters from many different countries so I'm trying to set the encoding to UTF-8. However, no matter what I do, it remains ISO-8859-1. I tried to create a filter in my web.xml and I've tried putting this response.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8"); response.setContentType("text/html; charset=utf-8"); just before rendering the view. But when I load the page and click "View Page Info", the encoding is always ISO-8859-1. I've also tried hitting my app server directly to see if it was being affected by Apache but got the same result. Any help is appreciated.

• State Machine WF: Issues with workflow termination

  Hello, We have a state machine workflow for maintaining the state of an application submitted by a user. One of the issues I am having is related to workflow termination. In one of the states, I had a bug. When the application reached that state, it threw an exception and as a result, the terminate event of the workflow was called and the particular workflow instance got removed from the persistence database. So I am not able to load that workflow instance anymore. I would have hoped, if there is an error in one of the states, an exception would be thrown(so that we know what the issue is), yet the entire workflow instance should not disappear. Can the fault handler activity ensure that the workflow does not terminate. Also, is there a way, when the terminate event is called, the instances do not get removed from the persistence store. Thanks for any help/suggestions.

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). 3 years ago, I had published “How big can my SharePoint 2007 installation be?” Well, SharePoint 2010 has significant under the covers improvements. So, how big can your SharePoint 2010 installation be? There are three kinds of limits you should know about Hard limits that cannot be exceeded by design. Configurable that are, well configurable – but the default values are set for a pretty good reason, so if you need to tweak, plan and understand before you tweak. Soft limits, you can exceed them, but it is not recommended that you do. Before you read any of the limits, read these two important disclaimers - 1. The limit depends on what you’re doing. So, don’t take the below as gospel, the reality depends on your situation. 2. There are many additional considerations in planning your SharePoint solution scalability and performance, besides just the below. So with those in mind, here goes.   Hard Limits - Zones per web app 5 RBS NAS performance Time to first byte of any response from NAS must be less than 20 milliseconds List row size 8000 bytes driven by how SP stores list items internally Max file size 2GB (default is 50MB, configurable). • SQL SERVER – Simple Example to Configure Resource Governor – Introduction to Resource Governor

  Let us jump right away with question and answer mode. What is resource governor? Resource Governor is a feature which can manage SQL Server Workload and System Resource Consumption. We can limit the amount of CPU and memory consumption by limiting /governing /throttling on the SQL Server. Why is resource governor required? If there are different workloads running on SQL Server and each of the workload needs different resources or when workloads are competing for resources with each other and affecting the performance of the whole server resource governor is a very important task. What will be the real world example of need of resource governor? Here are two simple scenarios where the resource governor can be very useful. Scenario 1: A server which is running OLTP workload and various resource intensive reports on the same server. The ideal situation is where there are two servers which are data synced with each other and one server runs OLTP transactions and the second server runs all the resource intensive reports. However, not everybody has the luxury to set up this kind of environment. In case of the situation where reports and OLTP transactions are running on the same server, limiting the resources to the reporting workload it can be ensured that OTLP’s critical transaction is not throttled. Scenario 2: There are two DBAs in one organization. One DBA A runs critical queries for business and another DBA B is doing maintenance of the database. At any point in time the DBA A’s work should not be affected but at the same time DBA B should be allowed to work as well. The ideal situation is that when DBA B starts working he get some resources but he can’t get more than defined resources. Does SQL Server have any default resource governor component? Yes, SQL Server have two by default created resource governor component. 1) Internal –This is used by database engine exclusives and user have no control. 2) Default – This is used by all the workloads which are not assigned to any other group. What are the major components of the resource governor? Resource Pools Workload Groups Classification In simple words here is what the process of resource governor is. Create resource pool Create a workload group Create classification function based on the criteria specified Enable Resource Governor with classification function Let me further explain you the same with graphical image. Is it possible to configure resource governor with T-SQL? Yes, here is the code for it with explanation in between. • libcurl .NET does not want to work on Win64

  I wrote multi-threaded FTP uploader on C#.NET using libcurl.NET. Everything works fine on my machine, but when I give application (exe + libcurl.dll + 2 libcurl C# binding DLLs) to my friend who is running Win64, application crashes. After adding exception catcher to whole Main() function, I was able to get readable error message: "An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format (Exception from HRESULT = 0x8007000b)" After googling for a while, I found an advice to enable unmanaged code in my project settings. I've recompiled my application and LibCurlNet.dll with this flag set but it did not help. What can cause such problem?

• Include OpenX ad in a jquery-ui dialog?

  I'm loading some content into a jquery-ui dialog via .ajax. That's all working fine but now I've been given an OpenX ad to embed into the dialog & can't figure out how to do it. I know all the script is stripped when coming in via ajax, & I know how to use $.getScript to load .js files for use in the dialog, but the OpenX ad script I've got uses document.write so I think it's expecting to be embedded inline into the desired position on the page. I've tried appending the escaped script string into the div on ajax success of the main content as below, but this results in the page being redirected to a page with just the ad on it. Attempt shown below: $("#" + idHelpPage).find(".adScript").append("<script type='text/javascript'>var m3_u = (location.protocol=='https:'?'https://d1.openx.org/ajs.php':'http://d1.openx.org/ajs.php');var m3_r = ... etc etc I'm ok with jquery but not great with javascript, would really appreciate any help! • Can you use the Phoenix compiler as a more powerful NGEN?

  In case you don't know of Phoenix, it's a compiler framework from Microsoft that's apparantly going to be the foundation of all their new compilers. It can read in code from CIL, x86, x64, and IA64; and emit code in x86, x64, IA64, or CIL. Can I use it to transform a pure .Net app into a pure native app? By which I mean, it will not have to load any .Net .dll (not even mscoree), and will have the same semantics? This is excluding Reflection, of course.

• Only run selenium test if previous selenium test fails

  I have several 'it' blocks in my selenium test file (using Ruby and rspec) that test various portions of my web application. Each 'it' block stops executing and goes to the next 'it' block if any of the conditions or code fails. Is there a way to run an 'it' block only if the previous fails or call a function to react to the failed test? Is there a better way to accomplish what I am wanting to do that doesn't involve an 'it' block?
