  • How do I override file.write() under Python 3?

    Below works on Python 2.6 but on Python 3.x it doesn't: old_file_write = file.write class file(): def write(self, d): if isinstance(d, types.bytes): self.buffer.write(d) else: old_file_write(d) # ... do something like f = open("x") f.write("...") The problems is that with Python 3.x the first like will generate an error: NameError: name 'file' is not defined How can I make this work on Python 3.x? PS. In fact I'm looking for a solution that will work on both versions.

  • Is there a way to create a WCF DataContract on a third party type?

    I am migrating to wcf and trying to figure out how I'm going to declare my Data Contracts properly. Some of the types I have been demoting are from a third party that I am unable to change. Are attributes the only way to explicitly declare data contracts in wcf? I know about the auto data contract functionality in 3.5, but the books I'm readin discourage that. And besides, that way assumes all state is publically available, which is oftentimes not the case.

    Hello, my eventual goal is to be able to use the authentication and communication to a GMail inbox. In my attempt, I stumbled up on GCALDaemon and am trying to set it up as a project within eclipse. However, I am running into problems running the project from the included .launch files.   • Should I be worried if I don't get any internships by 3rd year's end?

    I am in some mediocre college in some corner of India. Am about to complete 3rd year C.S. in a month and a half. I have no idea how to go about "finding an internship" as everyone seems to put it. Looking at online advice, I find that a primary way is to "use your contacts". I am sad to say that I don't have many friends(those I have, I am trying to get help from them for all it's worth), and my family can't help me as they have no idea about the software industry. My college has no official facility for aiding students in this, and the few faculty members who had contacts in "whatever" part of the industry have favoured some students that they have personally come to know. (Though I hear that the "internships" they got involve them stocking equipment in some small companies.... still it's something?) I'm getting nervous. I am considering just spending the coming summer refining my skills in C++ and begin learning MySQL and C#, both of which I have zero experience in. Maybe work on my own project... like a library management system. Relative to those in my college, I think I am among the best programmers there, but that isn't saying much as a lot of students can barely write basic code. I have experience in teaching myself C++, and DirectX9 having created a Tetris clone, some basic 3D apps (bouncing balls), and a basic console-based, text-file-database-using library management system (which I plan to improve this summer). Is it alright if I spend my summer so? Will I be able to get a job later on? I know I have to improve my social skills to get anywhere in life, and I will try, but say I am stuck like this till 4th year's end... will such self studying, online learning help me in landing a decent job? Perhaps after I have learned a bit more, joining some open source project?

    I'm stuck with my a piece of code I'm creating. My IDE is Eclipse and when I use its debugging feature, to trace what's happening on each line, it outputs perfectly. The client's interests are stored in the format "01010", where each 1 means they are interested in that activity, each 0 means they are not. My code compares each character of every client's string with every other client's string and outputs the results for all client's that don't have the same name and have three or more interests in common. When I run this code through Java's debugger, it outputs fine - but when I click run project or compile, I just get a blank screen. Any ideas?

  • Should the argument be passed by reference in this .net example?

    I have used Java, C++, .Net. (in that order). When asked about by-value vs. by-ref on interviews, I have always done well on that question ... perhaps because nobody went in-depth on it. Now I know that I do not see the whole picture. I was looking at this section of code written by someone else: XmlDocument doc = new XmlDocument(); AppendX(doc); // Real name of the function is different AppendY(doc); // ditto When I saw this code, I thought: wait a minute, should not I use a ref in front of doc variable (and modify AppendX/Y accordingly? it works as written, but made me question whether I actually understand the ref keyword in C#. As I thought about this more, I recalled early Java days (college intro language). A friend of mine looked at some code I have written and he had a mental block - he kept asking me which things are passed in by reference and when by value. My ignorant response was something like: Dude, there is only one kind of arg passing in Java and I forgot which one it is :). Chill, do not over-think and just code. Java still does not have a ref does it? Yet, Java hackers seem to be productive. Anyhow, coding in C++ exposed me to this whole by reference business, and now I am confused. Should ref be used in the example above? I am guessing that when ref is applied to value types: primitives, enums, structures (is there anything else in this list?) it makes a big difference. And ... when applied to objects it does not because it is all by reference. If things were so simple, then why would not the compiler restrict the usage of ref keyword to a subset of types. When it comes to objects, does ref serve as a comment sort of? Well, I do remember that there can be problems with null and ref is also useful for initializing multiple elements within a method (since you cannot return multiple things with the same easy as you would do in Python).   • NHibernate lazy properties behavior?

    I've been trying to get NHibernate into development for a project I'm working on at my workplace. Since I have to put a strong emphasis on performance, I've been running a proof-of-concept stress test on an existing project's table with thousands of records, all of which contain a large text column. However, when selecting a collection of these records, the select statement takes a relatively long time to execute; apparently due to the aforementioned column. The first solution that comes to mind is setting this property as lazy: <property name="Content" lazy="true"/> But there seems to be no difference in the SQL generated by NHibernate. My question is, how do lazy properties behave in NHibernate? Is there some kind of type limitations I could be missing? Should I take a different approach altogether? Using HQL's new Class(column1, column2) approach works, but lazy properties sounds like a simpler solution. It's perhaps worth mentioning I'm using NHibernate 2.1.2GA with the Castle DynamicProxy.   • Is there a straightforward way to have a ThreadStatic instance member?

    With the ThreadStatic attribute I can have a static member of a class with one instance of the object per thread. This is really handy for achieving thread safety using types of objects that don't guarantee thread-safe instance methods (e.g., System.Random). It only works for static members, though. Is there some corresponding attribute that provides the same functionality, but for instance members? In other words, that allows me to have one instance of the object, per thread, per instance of the containing class?

  • Why is function's length information of other shared lib in ELF?

    Our project (C++, Linux, gcc, PowerPC) consists of several shared libraries. When releasing a new version of the package, only those libs should change whose source code was actually affected. With "change" I mean absolute binary identity (the checksum over the file is compared. Different checksum - different version according to the policy). (I should mention that the whole project is always built at once, no matter if any code has changed or not per library). Usually this can by achieved by hiding private parts of the included Header files and not changing the public ones. However, there was a case where just a delete was added to the destructor of a class TableManager (in the TableManager.cpp file!) of library libTableManager.so, and yet the binary/checksum of library libB.so (which uses class TableManager ) has changed. TableManager.h: class TableManager { public: TableManager(); ~TableManager(); private: int* myPtr; } TableManager.cpp: TableManager::~TableManager() { doSomeCleanup(); delete myPtr; // this delete has been added } By inspecting libB.so with readelf --all libB.so, looking at the .dynsym section, it turned out that the length of all functions, even the dynamically used ones from other libraries, are stored in libB! It looks like this (length is the 668 in the 3rd column): 527: 00000000 668 FUNC GLOBAL DEFAULT UND _ZN12TableManagerD1Ev So my questions are: Why is the length of a function actually stored in the client lib? Wouldn't a start address be sufficient? Can this be suppressed somehow when compiling/linking of libB.so (kind of "stripping")? We would really like to reduce this degree of dependency...

  • How to test chrome extensions?

    Is there a good way to do this? I'm writing an extension that interacts with a website as a content script and saves data using localstorage. Are there any tools, frameworks, etc. that I can use to test this behavior? I realize there are some generic tools for testing javascript, but are those sufficiently power to test an extension? Unit testing is most important, but I'm also interested in other types of testing (such as integration testing).

I have the function with following signature: void box_sort(int**, int, int) and variable of following type: int boxes[MAX_BOXES][MAX_DIMENSIONALITY+1] When I am calling the function box_sort(boxes, a, b) GCC gives me two warnings: 103.c:79: warning: passing argument 1 of ‘box_sort’ from incompatible pointer type (string where i am calling the function) 103.c:42: note: expected ‘int **’ but argument is of type ‘int (*)[11] (string where the function is defined) The question is why? Whether int x[][] and int** x (and actually int* x[]) are not the same types in C?

    After graduating from college with a degree in mathematics and a minor in computer science, I took over a year to find my first programming job. I very much enjoy my work environment, but sometimes I feel like I'm not developing professionally as quickly as I am capable of. My company does mostly web programming. The project that I work on is basically a front-end for a SQL database. The entire project is (AFAIK) coded is VB.NET. I've been working on the back-end logic of the program. After some time on the job, we decided that designing web pages is not my cup of tea. It seems like the thing that I spend more time on than anything else is searching the web and SO for information about poorly documented .net and web APIs. This does not make me happy; is this normal for a programming job; I don't think it is. It really hit me the other day when i saw a question about math asked here and I didn't know the answer; I feel like my knowledge is going stale! I was previously almost hired by another company where they design graphic-intensive battle simulations for the military. I sometimes wonder what my life might be like if I had that job. I feel like my math and problem solving skills might have been a better fit at this other company. Within the wide field of software development, there are a number of directions in which to go as evidenced by the huge variety of topics discussed here on StackOverflow. I would like to feel like I'm going in the direction where I will make the most of my skills and have a satisfying career. Let me word this question as clearly as possible: given the wide breadth of the field of software development, how does it break down into sub-fields and what are the considerations for developing a software development career. I do not want to manage my career by default.

  • MonoTouch's Soft Debugger don't connect to App on iPhone - why?

    Hi everyone, I'm quite new on MonoTouch, so please forgive me my question in doubt... ;-) I need help with the soft-debugger, because it's not connecting to the App on the device. While with iPhone Simulator everything is working as expected, the following happens when I start debugging against my device: The is uploaded and installed to the device. MonoDevelop comes up with a window saying the following: "Waiting for debugger to connect on 127.0.0.1:10000..." Please start the application on the device" When starting the app on the device, the device vibrates indicating that the debugger is not connected.... In the settings of my App on the iPhone I have set the IP-Adress to my Mac's IP. My iPhone is connected via WIFI to my network. I can ping my Mac from my iPhone and vice versa. In several screenshots where the debugger was obviously working I saw that the debugger came up with the Mac's IP address and not the 127.0.0.1.... Do I have to configure my IP-address somewhere in MonoDevelop? BTW: I'm using the latest version of MonoDevelop - it's 2.4.1 I have tried anything.... re-installing MonoDevelop, cleaning up the project several times, setting up a new project.... nothing... Please, please help....

  • Would there be a market for this idea (cross platform VM for iPhone OS)

    For a long time I wondered if the following idea worth a nickel or just a waste of time and energy. I am willing to start a project which will provide a kind of a VM for all iPxxx apps - so developed once for iPxxx can run on a Macbook, iMac, Linux, Android and windows (desktop and mobile). You get the idea, right? I want to do to the current iPhone SDK, the same as what Mono did to Microsoft .Net and perhaps a more complete set of implementation. I tend to believe that if overnight all apps on appstore become available on the android market as well that would be a mini revolution. Think about running iPad apps on every tablet that will come out to the market in the future. Wouldn't it be fantastic to all the developers, which from now on, can write once and sell everywhere? The main questions which I ask myself repeatedly is: "Is This Legal?" - I mean, say I have done this, would apple's lawyers will start sending me all kinds of nasty emails? I am willing to hear your opinion about this idea as well as if some of you willing and able to join forces and start this open source project.

  • Flattening out a lib directory using jarjar

    I'm trying to flatten out the lib directory of a project using jarjar, where it will produce a jar file with my main code and all my required libraries inside of it. I can get the project code into the jar, but I need to find a way to get every jar in the './lib/' directory extracted to the base directory of the final output jar. I don't want it flattened in the sense that I still want the package hiearchy preserved. I could manually list every jar file using zipfileset, but I was hoping to do it dynamically. I would also like to include any *.so files flattened into the base directory of the output jar so I can extract them into a temp dir easily without having to search through the jar. For example my lib directory... ./lib/library1.jar ./lib/library2.jar ./lib/foo/library3.jar ./lib/foo/bar.so would look like this when cracked open in the output jar file... /..library1_package_hierarchy../lib1.class /..library1_package_heirarchy../lib2.class ... (and so on) /..library2_package_hierarchy../lib1.class /..library2_package_heirarchy../lib2.class ...   • Java: I've created a list of word objects to include the name and the frequency, but having trouble

    Hi Everyone, I'm working on a project which has a dictionary of words and I'm extracting them and adding them to an ArrayList as word objects. I have a class called Word as below. What I'm wondering is how do I access these word objects to update the frequency? As part of this project, I need to only have one unique word, and increase the frequency of that word by the number of occurrences in the dictionary. Now for viewing a single 'course', the url structure is; /course/course-name/ But for multiple courses? /courses/category/category-name/ Or... /course-category/category-name/ Or something entirely different?
