• Determine when using the VC90 compiler in VS2010 instead of VS2008?

  Is there a (Microsoft-specific) CPP macro to determine when I'm using the VC9 compiler in Visual Studio 2010 as opposed to Visual Studio 2008? _MSC_VER returns the compiler version, so with VS2010 multi-targeting feature, I'll get the same result as with VS2008. The reason for wanting to know the difference is that I created a new VS2010 project which contains code removed from a larger project. I just left the VS2008 stuff "as is" since we're moving away from VS2008 "soon" anyway and I didn't want to go through the hassle of creating a vcproj file along with the new vcxproj. For now, I've just defined my own macro to indicate whether the code is compiled into its own DLL or not; it works just fine, but it would be nice if there were something slightly more elegant.

• What programming/techy name should I give my new pup? [closed]

  I am getting a Border Collie puppy tomorrow. If I can get my wife to agree to do so I want to give it a techy/programming type of name. The vast majority of my development is in Microsoft .NET / C# on mobile devices (WinMo and tablets) as well as Silverlight and ASP.NET. I would like the name to be something in that area although I am open other technologies, etc. I have not seen him yet. I assume he is typical Border Collie colored - black/white. One name that crossed my mind is Xaml (pronounced Zammel). What other name ideas do you have?

• How to Override a private set property

  Hi, Im using the Microsoft.Office.Interop.MSProject.Resource assembly which has a "UniqueID" property, it has a get but not set. How can I actually set a value? An example would be very much appreciated. --Update-- Ok I can get the value for a property "Name" and set, but Im intersted in the "UniqueId" property that does not have a public set (get only): int ii = (int)resource.GetType().InvokeMember("UniqueID", BindingFlags.GetProperty, null, resource, new object[] { }); resource.GetType().InvokeMember("UniqueID", BindingFlags.SetProperty, null, resource, new object[] {iUid,}); I get the following error {"Number of parameters specified does not match the expected number."} anyway for me to work out how many paramters it needs?

• Why calling ISet<dynamic>.Contains() compiles, but throws an exception at runtime?

  Please, help me to explain the following behavior: dynamic d = 1; ISet<dynamic> s = new HashSet<dynamic>(); s.Contains(d); The code compiles with no errors/warnings, but at the last line I get the following exception: Unhandled Exception: Microsoft.CSharp.RuntimeBinder.RuntimeBinderException: 'System.Collections.Generic.ISet<object>' does not contain a definition for 'Contains' at CallSite.Target(Closure , CallSite , ISet`1 , Object ) at System.Dynamic.UpdateDelegates.UpdateAndExecuteVoid2[T0,T1](CallSite site, T0 arg0, T1 arg1) at FormulaToSimulation.Program.Main(String[] args) in As far as I can tell, this is related to dynamic overload resolution, but the strange things are (1) If the type of s is HashSet<dynamic>, no exception occurs. (2) If I use a non-generic interface with a method accepting a dynamic argument, no exception occurs. Thus, it looks like this problem is related particularly with generic interfaces, but I could not find out what exactly causes the problem. Is it a bug in the compiler/typesystem, or legitimate behavior?

• Assembly Version Conflicts with What is Already Bound

  I'm running Microsoft LightSwitch Beta 1 and have been creating an application which has been going great, but then I tried debugging after making a few minor changes and received the following error: "Could not load file or assembly 'SW_Resources.Commom, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The requested assembly version conflicts with what is already bound in the app domain or specified in the manifest. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131053)" I've tried emptying my cache in Firefox and IE but that doesn't seem to make any difference. I did discover if I right-clicked on the Solution and changed the version from 0.1 to 1.0 then it works fine. I had changed it to 0.1 b/c I wanted to reflect that it wasn't a release version...any thoughts on how to get around this issue the right way?

• Cheap windows driver signing for 64 bit Windows 7

  I need to install the libusb-win32 driver on Windows 7 64 bit machines. This driver is open source so it is not digitally signed so I want to do this my self but I wonder if this can be done WITHOUT paying lot of money. Is it possible to use a certificate which is NOT signed by Verisign or GlobalSign? Maybe self-signed or by using StartSSL instead? And if yes, how do I do it? According to this howto I have to use a "cross-certificate" (And there are only six available on the Microsoft list and most of them are for CAs which are no longer active) I don't care if the user is confronted with a warning message. I can even accept if the user has to install a special CA certificate first. I only require that the driver runs without manually disabling the signature check on each windows startup.

  If I override the System.Web.UI.Page constructor, as shown, when does DoSomething() get called in terms of the page lifecycle? • Asp.net Site on GoDaddy Loads Slowly

  I just published a very small site to GoDaddy that I programmed in Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008. The site only contains 6 sheets, none of which are data intensive. Each has a few small images that serve mostly to navigate to the other sheets. There is no data, no SQL, nothing like that. There is one master page that governs the page layout for all of the pages. Everything works fine, for the most part. I am posting because the site loads quite slowly, particularly considering how little content is being loaded. Can anybody give me any advice about what I should look at to speed this thing up a little bit? Is this an asp.net issue? Use of master pages? Godaddy? Something else? I'm a newbie, so speak slowly.   I'm in the process of Moving a project from Visual Studio 2003 to 2005 and have just seen the The event Click is read-only and cannot be changed when using inherited forms regardless of the Modifier on the Base Forms Controls will make all the Controls from the Base Readonly in the designer (Though in 2003 it didn't work this way). • DatabaseName.bak File Transfer Problem

  I have downloaded databasename.bak file from my hosting company, when i tried to restore that DB file in SQL server 2008 it is keep on giving me following error. The media family on device 'C:\go4sharepoint_1384_8481.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3241) According to this error and from following link http://www.sqlcoffee.com/Troubleshooting047.htm Later when I tried to restore file on server it was restored correctly, but when I tried to transfer same file using FTP Software FileZila and tried to restore that downloaded file it was giving above error. That is file is getting corrupted on the way to tranfer using FTP. Any Idea how can i avoid that file to get courrupt? Note: File is downloaded using FileZila - TransferType as Binary. Thank you.

• Override bits of a CSS class while inline?

  I have an html img that is being styled by a CSS class. I would like to override the width and height values used in that class under some circumstances. I'm building this img tag using something called a TagBuilder class, provided by Microsoft for the .Net system, which allows developers to assign attributes to an html element. In this case a CSS class has been assigned to the img tag, and I can assign width and height attributes individually, but they're not taking precedence over the values set in the CSS class. My tag looks like this currently: <img alt="my link" class="static" height="240" id="StaticImage" src="http://imageserver.com/myImage.jpg" width="240"> The static CSS class has width and height values of 300 each, and as you can see I'm trying to override them with 240. It's not working in this instance but can I do it without a second CSS class?

• How to catch specific exception without error number?

  I need to catch the following specific exception: System.Data.OleDb.OleDbException was caught ErrorCode=-2147467259 Message="The changes you requested to the table were not successful because they would create duplicate values in the index, primary key, or relationship. Change the data in the field or fields that contain duplicate data, remove the index, or redefine the index to permit duplicate entries and try again." Source="Microsoft JET Database Engine" I'm not sure what ErrorCode is but it looks unreliable. Can I rely on Message being identical across platforms? Is the only solution to do a text search of Message for words like duplicate and primary key? Note: see my question here for why I need to catch this exception.

  When i upload a excel file, i have used COM() to open and automate converting it to xml. It works fine, But when i run it, it always shows the message from Microsoft Excel: A file named ''' already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it? I can choose between Yes No and Cancel. normally i would choose Yes. But i dont want users to click on Yes each time. Can i disable this? Please inform me if any relevant codes need to be posted.   We are developing an application with Visual Studio 2008 and TFS. Our database is a MySQL DB. As we develop we keep the new queries that need to be applied to the database of our new release as the New Version Update Queries. Right now I'm keeping them in a simple text file (which is a painful task!). I know that TFS integrates with MSSQL and makes this job very easy. I've already asked our consultant from Microsoft if there is any way to integrate TFS and MySQL, and his answer was "NO". So I was wondering if anyone knows any smart way of handling this issue?

• LINQ and paging with a DataTable - can't get Skip working?

  Ok so this might be a dumb question, but I can't seem to figure it out. I thought I'd try out LINQ against a DataTable. I got my query working and now I'm trying to implement some simple paging. Error 1 'System.Data.OrderedEnumerableRowCollection' does not contain a definition for 'Skip' and no extension method 'Skip' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Data.OrderedEnumerableRowCollection' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) References I have: Microsoft.SharePoint System System.Core System.Data System.Data.DataSetExtensions System.Web System.Xml What am I missing?

• XmlSerializer.Deserialize method appends timezone to a time and datetime field

  Have a small script in Microsoft.NET 2.0 that deserializes a XML back to a typed object, connects dyanimcally to a web service using ServiceDescription and binds the deserialized typed object to the WebMethod inbound. The XML prior to serialization looks like below <completion_time>12:19:38</completion_time> on the wire when communicating to the web service looks like below <completion_time>12:19:38.0000000-04:00</completion_time> with the timezone appended to the end. This is causing the time to be read differently when communicating to a web service at a different timezone. is there anyway to let XmlSerializer skip the timezone? Or any other known workarounds?

Over the last several years C# has extended it's general purpose features by introducing more and more functional language features: LINQ (list comprehension), Lamdas, Closures, Anonymous Delegates and more... Given C#'s adoption of these functional features and F#'s taxonomy as an impure functional language (it allows YOU to access framework libraries or change shared state when a function is called if you want to) there is a strong similarity between the two languages although each has it's own polar opposite primary emphasis. I'm interested in any successful models employing these two languages in your production polyglot programs and also the areas within production software (web apps, client apps, server apps) you have written in F# in the past year or so that you would previously have written in C#.

(a) What can be the reason? (b) Is there any way out? I have also tried using count($rs_select -> GetRows()). This satisfies the need but looks inefficient as it will involve copying of all the records into an array first.

  I hope I don't have to explain what is Silverlight to SO community. Anyway TemplateMonster.com has recently released new Silverlight themes that have been ported from Flash. Silverlight Templates | Template Monster I've noticed a significant lag on my Macbook Pro 13" in loading the template page in Silverlight. And not just Template Monster templates but other silverlight applications on the web as well. Now why is that? I've been hearing how great Silverlight is and how it's a great business platform blah blah blah. And now Microsoft plans to build Windows Phone 7 on top of Silverlight framework. As much as I want to praise Silverlight, so far it's been nothing but a disappointment to me. Could someone enlighten me, what is so great about Silverlight, and why should I put up with that starting up lag? Silverlight was really next up on my "stuff to learn" list this summer, but now I am not so sure...

  i am new to asp.net. I have uploaded a site in ftp. except default.aspx remaining pages working. when i navigate to home page i.e Default.aspx it shows an error Server Error in '/' Application. • Accessing a control in asp.net content page through Javascript

  Hi, I have a form in my content page for which I am doing some client side validations via Javascript. The Javascript behaves as expected if I place the JS code directly in the content page. But if I place the JS code in it's own file and try accessing that from the content/master page (through the script tag's src attribute), I get a run time error when the validation function in JS being called. To be specific, I get the below error. Microsoft JScript runtime error: Objected expected/required at this line - document.getElementById('<%=txtemailId.ClientID %').value txtemailId is in the content page. Javascript code is placed in validation.js and accessed via master page. The reason I guess is that when .net is parsing the files, it is unable to substitute txtemailId.ClientID with the client side value that would be generated later on. So, how should one go about it? My company is considering migrating a legacy PB application to .NET (C#) and I am just wondering if anyone has any experience - good or bad - that you would like to share. The application is rather large with 10 PBL libraries, some PFC as well as custom frameworks. There are a large number of DLL calls being made as well. Finally, it uses a Microsoft SQL Server database. We have discussed porting the "core" application code to .NET and then porting more advanced functionality across as-needed.

• Java library for converting Word documents to PDFs or images

  Hey there What I need to do is convert Microsoft Word .doc files to PDFs or images. This has to occur in Java. I have done a fair bit of investigation already. I've tried Davisor Publishor but it doesn't give me the accuracy that I need - for instance text overlapping in the output document. Adobe has something called LiveCycle. Anyone tried this? It looks quite massive and a bit of overkill (its an "integrated server solution"). Sounds expensive. Saying that, it doesn't have to be free, or cheap.   I have a Windows Forms app that, unfortunately, must make calls to controls from a second thread. I've been using the thread-safe pattern described on the http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms171728.aspx. Which has worked great in the past. The specific problem I am having now: I have a WebBrowser control and I'm attempting to invoke the WebBrowser.Navigate() method using this Thread-Safe pattern and as a result I am getting StackOverflow exceptions. Here is the Thread-Safe Navigate method I've written.   Right now, it's iffy. Gzip, images, sometimes it doesn't work. How do I modify this download function so that it can work with anything? (Regardless of gzip or any header?) How do I automatically "Detect" if it's gzip?
