• Technical website - Should I assume that my visitors will use a modern browser?

  I am in the process of creating my own website, which will include a technical blog. I want to build my website using modern technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3. Since my website will be targetted at programmers and mostly tech-savvy users, should I take for granted that these people will be using a modern browser? Or should I make my site compatible with older browsers just in case? I don't want to go through the pain of adapting my website to be compatible with browsers I assume won't be used.

• Where is EasUS coming from?

  I have downloaded the Universal USB Installer and Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop as described on your site. I installed it to a 16Gb USB stick including the format option. Now when I try to boot from the stick into Ubuntu I get a couple of lines of script then a screen with EasUS Todo Backup with Backup. Recovery, Clone and Tools options, but no sign of Ubuntu starting. Where is the start Ubuntu option please? I can find no reference to EaseUS on your help pages.

• Is NTFS-3G safe for writing?

  These days, I have to use the NTFS-3G driver to write to an NTFS drive (which will later be used in Windows). But I still remember the olde times of Linux ntfs driver which clearly said in the docs: 'If you write to an ntfs volume, run our special program afterwards which will clean up the damage done.' So, I read through the man, the docs, the Tuxera site and Askubuntu and found no discussion of the write-safety of NTFS-3G. The only thing that was mentioned somewhere is that the driver doesn't support the NTFS journal. So, the question is, can I use NTFS-3G and be sure that I will later read what I have written to the files? Won't, for example, Windows find the journal entries missing and 'clean up' the data according to its own faulty understanding?

  I submitted my site's URL to my workplace's printed newsletter and when I get the printed version, they added a dot to the end of it. Some people will realize that the period is not a part of the url but others will not. Is there an easy way to redirect from http://example.com/home. to http://example.com/home? I have a IIS 7.0 shared hosting with GoDaddy. This means I have access to the box only through their interface so some options might be limited.

• Getting a lot of '/_' errors from webmaster tools

  I'm using a WordPress site and I thought I got all the kinks out of it. For some reason Webmaster Tools is crawling my website and showing a lot of 404 errors which are from /_ like additional pages that I've never created. I just can't figure out what is creating these for Google crawlers and then displaying a 404. My robots.txt is here. My sitemap (created by the Yoast plugin) is here. I have Yoast and Jetpack plugins installed. What could be causing these links to appear

  I finished my website and launched it, I think I had a problem with my robots.txt - so I changed it to look like this: 03/08/2012 # Allows all bots Sitemap: http://www.mysite.co.za/sitemap.xml User-agent: * Disallow: /dashboard/ When I google my domain.co.za - I get this back: Home A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt – learn more. You've visited this page 3 times. Last visit: 2012/08/15 Now since I fixed this and added a 301 redirect to redirect mysite.co.za to www.mysite.co.za I would love it if google bot would come do a visit. Is there anything I can do to get this fixed?

  I need to redirect CakePHP installation host to my domain. Location of my Cakephp installation: myhosting.com/newsite/ Domain: www.mydomain.com I'm currently using URL Frame to direct www.mydomain.com to myhosting.com/newsite/. Problem When I load www.mydomain.com, I see all links in the site is pointing to the hosting location - example - myhosting.com/newsite/product/1 It should be pointing to www.mydomain.com/product/1 Any simple way to fix this? Probably very simple to solve it, but I can't bend it. Help much appreciated.

  Can anyone recommend affiliate networks that focus on B2B development. We are about to launch a UK job search engine that allows job boards to list their jobs on the engine. We have decided to keep the advertising in house, with the goal being of keeping the costs down. I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on potential advertising routes that we could take. For example B2B affiliate networks, adwords etc. We are in the position of launching an empty site and ideally we would like to be attracting recruitment agencies or businesses to signup to either a free or paid account. They can then begin to populate the engine with job listings. An obvious choice so far would be to promote on networks like Linked In. Any ideas? Thanks

• How to recover organic position in Google results after server down?

  I have several sites that were doing quite well in terms of organic SEO rankings. I have the important sites setup in Google's Webmaster tools. Long story short, the system was down for about two weeks. Now in AdSense and Analytics, I am seeing that the page views are SLOWLY increasing. and I would like to know if there is anything I can do now to try to expedite the process of regaining those positions. Since there were several errors from that server, is it possible that Google will now rank any site from that IP address lower due to those two weeks of errors? Is this something that I just have to let ride out? Thanks.

  Hello everyone. I am working on website and I am trying to make it fast as much as possible - especially the small things that can make my site a little bit quicker. So, my to my question - I got loop that run 5 times and in each time it echo something, If I'll make variable and the loop will add the text I want to echo into the variable and just in the end I'll echo the variable - will it be faster? loop 1 (with the echo inside the loop) for ($i = 0;$i < 5;$i++) { echo "test"; } loop 2 (with the echo outside [when the loop finish]) $echostr = ""; for ($i = 0;$i < 5;$i++) { $echostr .= "test"; } echo $echostr; I know that loop 2 will increase a bit the file size and therefore the user will have to download more bytes but If I got huge loop will it be better to use second loop or not?   i have a website with thousands of dynamic pages. I want to use the robots.txt file in order to dissalow certain url patterns corresponding to pages with duplicate content. For example i have a page for article itemA belonging to category catA/subcatA, with URL: /catA/subcatA/itemA this is the URL that i want to be indexed from google. this article is also visible via tagging in various other places in the web site. The URLs produced via tagging is like: /tagA1/itemA this URL i want NOT to be indexed from google. However i want to have indexed all tag listings: /tagA1 so how can i achieve this? dissalow URLs of including a specific string with a '/' at the end? /tagA1/ itemA - dissalow /tagA1 - allow

• How to push through a domain transfer in spite of the 60 day rule

  I recently purchased a domain through a registrar which I won't name here. Within the first five minutes of logging in, I found a severe vulnerability that allows me access to all registration details of all users. Simply put, I do not trust this registrar with any kind of business. But I'm unable to transfer the domain because, for some reason, it has to exist in its current state for 60 days. We're planning to launch the site this weekend - we can't wait 60 days. But I can not trust this registrar: if I found such a severe vulnerability in the first few minutes, how many more similar un-trustables will I find in those 60 days? Is there a higher authority to whom I can submit a case to get my domain transferred to a different registrar?

  Since it's introduction in Java EE 6, CDI has become a key API for the platform. CDI 1.1 was a relatively minor release included in Java EE 7 as was CDI 1.2 (to be included in GlassFish 4.0.1). We have much higher expectations from CDI 2 (projected to be included in Java EE 8) under the new leadership of Antoine Sabot-Durand. Much like we conducted the Java EE 8 survey to solidify future direction for the platform, CDI 2 is now undergoing the same effort. Towards this goal the CDI 2 leadership is now soliciting feedback on some very specific items via an open survey. Topics include the likes of Java SE bootstrap, asynchronous processing, modularity, EJB-style @Startup and @Asynchronous in CDI, configuration and CDI Lite.   Including customizable, JavaScript-based scrollbars (and scrolling functionality in general, i.e. bind the control to the mouse scroll wheel) in your webapp can be a great temptation. However all solutions I could find were developed by individuals (which can equal lack of formal or future support). In addition I fail to remember any mainstream site using them. In my particular case, no-JavaScript or IE6/odd-browser environments are not intended to be supported. Should custom scrollbars be avoided nowadays? If not, what's the best option one can choose?

• How can I alias domains to subdomains?

  I have a main site with a bunch of subdomains created. Each subdomain is a blog and I want each blog to have its own domain name i.e. thisguy.com - blog1.mainsite.com thatguy.com - blog2.mainsite.com I bought the new domains and I set up the CNAME records as above to alias them to the appropriate subdomains. However, I get my hosts "a domain is pointing to one of our servers but we don't know anything about it" landing page. How can I set up these domains as aliases of my subdomains?
