• Java simple encryption

  Hello, I would like to encrypt a textual (configuration) file stored on disk. Trying to use DES encryption I've had fatal error on client machines, I later found out caused because the algorithm could not handle accented characters (!) I suspect that was because I was using old packages (sun.misc.BASE64Decoder) - but I'm not sure that is the reason. However, I'm looking for a simpler solution - I need a really simple encryption (I know some people would not agree on that) - not RSA of 128 bit keys or so, just obscuring the text from curious eyes. It is really weird that I could not find on the web a simple trivial solution. Any idea, anyone ? Thanks, Ran

• PowerPoint version compilation

  Let's say I am using SharpDevelop/VS to develop an app that uses PowerPoint. Do I need to recompile the app so there is a build for each version of MS Office? I have MS Office 2007, but I would also like the app to work with Office 2003 and later, without having to recompile the app for each version. Do I just need to install the appropriate Office Interop redistributable package/msi on the client machine, and ship my app as is? Thanks in advance for your help.

• How to use RadSpell within a Telerik MVC Grid editor popup?

  Is it possible to use RadSpell within a Telerik MVC Grid editor popup? I have followed some of the examples online to use RadSpell with ASP.NET MVC (http://www.telerik.com/help/aspnet-ajax/mvc-using-spellchecker.html and http://www.telerik.com/help/aspnet-ajax/spell-client-side-api.html) and I am able to attach multiple text controls to check but the display gets messed up when using Telerik MVC Grid editor popups since it's already in a modal. Sometimes it will randomly pick another div on the page and treats it like it's the main window (it will gray out just a portion of the page and I'll see the RadSpell popup peeking through but it's unusable). It seems like it chooses different places in the DOM to inject the iframe/radwindow for RadSpell as well. Any ideas? I didn't include any code because my implementation is a mess and I'd prefer to start with something simpler, from scratch.

• How to avoid this very heavy query that slows down the application?

  Hi, We have a web application running in a production enviroment and at some point the client complained about how slow the application got. When we checked what was going on with the application and the database we discover this "precious" query that was being executed by several users at the same time (thus inflicting an extremely high load on the database server): SELECT NULL AS table_cat, o.owner AS table_schem, o.object_name AS table_name, o.object_type AS table_type, NULL AS remarks FROM all_objects o WHERE o.owner LIKE :1 ESCAPE :"SYS_B_0" AND o.object_name LIKE :2 ESCAPE :"SYS_B_1" AND o.object_type IN(:"SYS_B_2", :"SYS_B_3") ORDER BY table_type, table_schem, table_name Our application does not execute this query, I believe it is an Hibernate internal query. I've found little information on why Hibernate does this extremely heavy query, so any help in how to avoid it very much appreciated! • using second level cache vs pushing objects into the session

  I have some big entities which are frequently accessed in same session. For example, in my application there is a reporting page which consist of dynamically generated chart images. For each chart image on page, client makes requests to corresponding controller and the controller generates images using some entities. I can either use asp.net's session dictionary for "caching" those entities or rely on nhibernate's second level cache support with using cached queries for example. What is your opinion? By the way I will use shared hosting, is second level cache hosting friendly? Thanks.

• Loose Coupling vs. Information Hiding and Ease of Change

  I'm just reading Code Complete by Steve McConell and I'm thinking of an Example he gives in a section about loose coupling. It's about the interface of a method that calculates the number of holidays for an employee, which is calculated from the entry date of the employee and her sales. The author suggests a to have entry date and sales as the parameters of the method instead of an instance of the employee: int holidays(Date entryDate, Number sales) instead of int holidays(Employee emp) The argument is that this decouples the client of the method because it does not need to know anything about the Employee class. Two things came to my mind: Providing all the parameters that are needed for the calculation breaks encapsulation. It shows the internals of the method on how it computes the result. It's harder to change, e.g. when someone decides that also the age of the employee should be included in the calculation. One would have to change the signature. What's your opinion?

  I need to embed some PDF documents into a website. The last time I did this, I used a jQuery lightbox to popup an iFrame with the PDF document as the URL. The client's PDF viewer would then take care of the rest. Apparently though, that was a bit buggy on some other peoples browsers. I guess it was due to the large PDF file sizes and the effort it took for their computers to fire up Adobe. So I'm after ideas on how to go about this. How do you guys embed your PDF's into websites? Or do you just stick to adding a download link?

  Hello: Some months ago, a colleague of mine installed ODAC 11.106.21 in a server using XCOPY and then he developed many applications that use this client without problems (in test and production windows servers). Past week, I developed an application under ODAC 11.1.07.20. When I asked him to install these new ODAC version using XCOPY in a different folder and then include my application in the test server, he answered me that I should use ODAC 11.106.21 because he could have troubles with his applications. So I would like to know: 1) If it is really possible to have two different ODAC versions in one server. 2) If the answer is positive, how can I firmly ensure to my colleague that he will not have troubles with his applications? 3) If the answer is positive, is this necessary to do some kind of configuration in the server?   So, with HTML5 giving us local SQL databases on the client side, if you want to write a select or insert, you no longer have the ability to sanitize third party input by saying $buddski = mysql_real_escape_string($tuddski) because the PHP parser and MySQL bridge are far away. It's a whole new world of SQLite where you compose your queries and parse your results with JavaScript. But while you may not have your whole site's database go down, the user who gets his/her database corrupted or wiped due to a malicious injection attack is going to be rather upset. So, what's the best way, in pure JavaScript, to escape/sanitize your inputs so they will not wreak havoc with your user's built-in database? Scriptlets? specifications? Anyone?

• Virtual Earth / Bing maps javascript file size

  I am working with a site that uses virtual earth for its mapping. Unfortunately the file size of the referenced javascript file, ecn.dev.virtualearth.net/mapcontrol/mapcontrol.ashx?v=6.2, is 200 something kb before being expanded (to 970kb). As our site runs under https this file is not cached on the client, and can cause a few seconds delay to users, made more substantial in times of high load. My question is, is there anyway to get virtual earth to run smaller, or have more efficient lazy loading? At the moment it looks like our hands are tied.

  The purpose of the JLabel is to show who a message is to, like in a mail client e.g. To: John, Mary, Peter, Frank, Tom, Harry I will have the names in a vector so can build up a string from that and then set the label's text to this string. However it has the potential to get quite long. I was think it might be nice to have something like this: To: John, Mary, Peter, Frank, Tom, Harry, ... Then when you click on the '...', it will expand more or just show a tool tip if you mouse over the ... Yes this idea is stolen from Thunderbird! I am open to other ideas, don't have to use a JLabel. Thanks.

• Retry web service call if authentication failure requires re-login

  I'm consuming a web service from C#, and the web service requires a login call and then uses cookie sessions. The web service will time out sessions after a certain timeframe, after which the client will have to re-login. I'd like to find a way to automatically catch the soap fault the service sends back in this scenario, and handle it by re-logging in and then retrying the previously attempted call. I would prefer to do this somehow automatically for all the web service methods in question, rather than having to manually wrap the calls with the retry logic. Suggestions?

• Transfer file using BITS without using IIS as the server?

  I know that I can transfer files using BITS and a wrapper like SharpBITS, but it seems that I need an IIS server on one end - either to upload to or download from. Is there a way to use the BITS protocol to transfer a file without requiring IIS? Some kind of a "BITS Server" or "Listener" project that my client's BITS service can connect to. I'm looking for functionality that's exactly what BITS provides, but I'd prefer not to require that IIS be installed (though if I have to, I can). Thanks!

• Removing the contents of a Chan or MVar in a single discrete step

  I'm writing a discrete simulation where request values from multiple threads accumulate in a centralized queue. Every n milliseconds, a manager wakes up to process requests. When the manager wakes up, it should retrieve all of the contents of the central queue in a single discrete step. While processing these, any client threads attempting to submit to the queue should block. When processing completes, the queue reopens and the manager goes back to sleep. What's the best way to do this? The retry behavior of STM isn't really what I want. If I use a Chan or MVar, there's no way to prevent clients from enqueuing additional requests during processing. One approach is to use an MVar as a mutex on a Chan holding the queue. Are there other ways to do this?

  I am using Apache fop-0.95 to build pdf files from a JSP web application on IBM iSeries V5R4 using Websphere 6.0. Everything works perfect in my development using Websphere Development Studio client. When I put the application on the server, I get an error at this line. FopFactory fopFactory = FopFactory.newInstance(); The error is: java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: javax/imageio/ImageIO Does anyone know how I can fix this error? All of the fop class files are part of the EAR file. The files were installed to the projects \WEB-INF\lib directory. I have added the fop jar files to the classpath, using the admin console. I am running IBM WebSphere Application Server - Express, 6.0.2.9 Build Number: cf90614.22 on IBM iSeries V5R4

• Trying to cause java.lang.OutOfMemoryException

  Hi, I am trying to reproduce java.lang.OutOfMemoryException in Jboss4, which one of our client got, presumably by running the J2EE applications over days/weeks. I am trying to find a way for the webapp to spitout java.lang.OutOfMemoryException in a matter of minutes (instead of days/weeks). One thing come into mind is to write a selenium script and has the script bombards the webapps. One other thing that we can do is to reduce JVM heap size, but we would prefer not to do this, as we want to see the limit of our system. Any suggestions? ps: I don't have access to the source code.
