  • Custom Calculations in a Matrix - Reporting Services 2005

    I am writing a report to show gas usage (in gallons) used by each department. The request is to view each month and the gallons used by each department. A column is required to display what each departments target goal is, based on the gallons of gas they have used in a past time frame. Each departments target goal is x percent less than the total gallons used for said time frame. I currently have a matrix in Reporting Services with departments making up rows, months making up columns, and gallons filling the details. The matrix is being filled by dataset1. I have the data grouping as is requested for each month by each department. My problem is calculating the target goal. My thought was to create a second dataset (dataset2) that returns the gallons used based on the time frame requested. I grouped this data by department. I was hoping I could use the department field in each dataset to make sure the appropriate numbers were used. I added a new column which shows up next to the gallons field. As I attempted to build the Expression I found out that I could only grab the gallons used from dataset2 if I was summing the gallons field. This gives me the total gallons used by every department combined. I have tried to find resources with similar examples of what I am trying to accomplish but I cannot seem to come across one. I am trying to keep this as detailed as possible without making it too wordy. I would be more than happy to clarify or explain into further detail what I have written above if it is needed. If anyone has links, comments, or suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. A very simple visual or what I am hoping to accomplish is below.   • C - floating point rounding

    I'm trying to understand how floating point numbers work. I think I'd like to test out what I know / need to learn by evaluating the following: I would like to find the smallest x such that x + 1 = x, where x is a floating point number. As I understand it, this would happen in the case where x is large enough so that x + 1 is closer to x than the next number higher than x representable by floating point. So intuitively it seems it would be the case where I don't have enough digits in the significand. Would this number x then be the number where the significand is all 1's. But then I can't seem to figure out what the exponent would have to be. Obviously it would have to be big (relative to 10^0, anyway).

Date picker (OMG, I can't stand picking date with it. Too many clicks required) 3 Dropdown lists. Day, Month, Year. (I am not very fond of it though - they are too long) Straightforward input: DD.MM.YYYY (My choice, but I am programmer, not a customer) ... some more What kind of input do you prefer? What is the worst one for your opinion?

    Python has a very handy package that can parse nearly any unambiguous date and provides helpful error messages on a parse failure, python-dateutil. Comparison to the SimpleDateFormat class is not favorable - AFAICT SimpleDateFormat can only handle one exact date format and the error messages have no granularity. I've looked through the Joda API but it appears Joda is the same way - only one explicit format can be parsed at a time. Is there any package or library that reproduces the python-dateutil behavior? Or am I missing something WRT Joda/SimpleDateFormat?

    Hello! I wonder how calculators work with precision. For example the value of sin(M_PI) is not exactly zero when computed in double precision: #include <math.h> #include <stdio.h> int main() { double x = sin(M_PI); printf("%.20f\n", x); // 0.00000000000000012246 return 0; } Now I would certainly want to print zero when user enters sin(p). I can easily round somewhere on 1e–15 to make this particular case work, but that’s a hack, not a solution. When I start to round like this and the user enters something like 1e–20, they get a zero back (because of the rounding). The same thing happens when the user enters 1/10 and hits the = key repeatedly — when he reaches the rounding treshold, he gets zero. And yet some calculators return plain zero for sin(p) and at the same time they can work with expressions such as (1e–20)/10 comfortably. Where’s the trick?

  • Formula for producing a CGRect for a UIScrollView, that displays a UIImage in scaled to fit way

    Hi I am loading in images with varying sizes and putting them in UIScrollViews, all the images are larger than the UIScrollView. The user can scroll and zoom as they please, but initially I would like for the image to be centered and scaled so the largest side of the image aligns with the edge of the scrollView, i.e. if the picture is in landscape I would like to size and scale it so that the left and right side goes all the way to the edge of the UIScrollVIew and vice versa I found a formula in a utility function in the Programming guide but it does not quite fit my needs. My approach is to use: CGrect initialPos = ? [self.scrollView zoomToRect:initialPos animated:YES]; I know the size of my scrollView and the size of my image, what I need to figure out is the scale and CGRect to apply to the scrollView to center and size my image.   • How to find control points for a BezierSegment given Start, End, and 2 Intersection Pts in C# - AKA

    Hi, I've been struggling looking for an understandable way to do this. I have four points, a StartPt, EndPoint, and Intersection points to represent the peak and valley in the bezier. The BezierSegment in C# requires start, controlPoint 1, controlPoint 2, endpoint - however I don't have any control points I only have these two points that lie along the bezier curves (i'm calling them intersection points above)... how can I calculate the two control points? Thanks in advance, this has been driving me crazy. There's some kind of explanation here: http://www.tinaja.com/glib/nubz4pts1.pdf but it's written in postscript and that language makes no sense to me at all - it's over my head.

    Suppose I have an integral that's bounded on one (or both) end by (-)infinity. AFAICT, I can't analytically solve this problem, it takes brute force (e.g. using a Left Riemann Sum). I'm having trouble generalizing the algorithm so that it sets the proper subdivisions; I'll either do far too much work to calculate something trivial, or not do nearly enough and have huge aliasing errors. Answering in any language is cool, but maybe someone with better google-fu can end this quickly. :) Is what I'm looking for as impossible as trying to measure the British coastline?

    This maybe an over asked question, but my mind draws blank at this moment. I know what a candlestick chart is and how to draw it daily. But how to draw it intraday at asked time periods. I have this server, written in Java, that gives me trade depth (each trade done since the start of the day). Its just a stream of raw data: price, shares, timestamp. How does one go about calculating candlestick data from that? Lets say, they want to have 5 min candlestick or 1min candlestick. Or is there a library that will do that for me if I feed it data? Any help is appreciated!

  • MySQL - Calculating fields on the fly vs storing calculated data

    Hi Everyone, I apologise if this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find an answer to a question that I have about calculating on the fly vs storing fields in a database. I read a few articles that suggested it was preferable to calculate when you can, but I would just like to know if that still applies to the following 2 examples. Example 1. Say you are storing data relating to a car. You store the fuel tank size in litres, and how many litres it uses per 100km. You also want to know how many KMs it can travel, which can be calculated from the tank size and economy. I see 2 ways of doing this: When a car is added or updated, calculate the amount of KMs and store this as a static field in the database. Every time a car is accessed, calculate the amount of KMs on the fly. Because the cars economy/tank size doesn't change (although it could be edited), the KMs is a pretty static value. I don't see why we would calculate it every single time the car is accessed. Wouldn't this waste cpu time as opposed to simply storing it in a separate field in the database and calculating only when a car is added or updated? My next example, which is almost an entirely different question (but on the same topic), relates to counting children. Let's say we have a app which has categories and items. We have a view where we display all the categories, and a count of all the items inside each category. Again, I'm wondering what's better. To perform a MySQL query to count all the items in each category every single time the page is accessed? Or store the count in a field in the categories table and update when an item is added / deleted? I know it is redundant to store anything that can be calculated, but I worry that calculating fields or counting records might be slow as opposed to storing the data in a field. If it's not then please let me know, I just want to learn about when to use either method. On a small scale I guess it wouldn't matter either way, but apps like Facebook, would they really count the amount of friends you have every time someone views your profile or would they just store it as a field? I'd appreciate any responses to both of these scenarios, and any resource that might explain the benefits of calculating vs storing. Thanks in advance, Christian

  • Finding cities close to one another using longitude and latitude

    Each user in my db is associated to a city (with it's longitude and latitude) How would I go about finding out which cities are close to one another? i.e. in England, Cambridge is fairly close to London. So If I have a user who lives in Cambridge. Users close to them would be users living in close surrounding cities, such as London, Hertford etc. Any ideas how I could go about this? And also, how would I define what is close? i.e. in the UK close would be much closer than if it were in the US as the US is far more spread out. Ideas and suggestions. Also, do you know any services that provide this sort of functionality? Thanks

  • Python: How to get a value of datetime.today() that is "timezone aware"?

    Hi, I am trying to subtract one date value from the value of datetime.today() to calculate how long ago something was. But it complains: TypeError: can't subtract offset-naive and offset-aware datetimes The value datetime.today() doesn't seem to be "timezone aware", while my other date value is. How do I get a value of datetime.today() that is timezone aware? Right now it's giving me the time in local time, which happens to be PST, i.e. UTC-8hrs. Worst case, is there a way I can manually enter a timezone value into the datetime object returned by datetime.today() and set it to UTC-8? Of course, the ideal solution would be for it to automatically know the timezone. Thanks!

I have my code, but I think there should be more elegant way. calling code: var numberOfLeapYears = NumberOfLeapYears(startDate.Year + 1, endDate.Year - 1); function itself: private static int NumberOfLeapYears(int startYear, int endYear) { var counter = 0; for (var year = startYear; year <= endYear; year++) counter += DateTime.IsLeapYear(year) ? 1 : 0; return counter; } So if I have startDate = "10/16/2006" and endDate = "4/18/2004" I should only have 1 leap year (2000) in result. Another words startDate's Year and endDate's year should not be calculated, only years in between. Thanks in advance for your help.

    So I am dumb and I have this: select whatever from bank_accs b1, bank_accs b2, table3 t3 where t3.bank_acc_id = t1.bank_acc_id and b2.bank_acc_number = b1.bank_acc_number and b2.currency_code(+) = t3.buy_currency and trunc(sysdate) between nvl(b2.start_date, trunc(sysdate)) and nvl(b2.end_date, trunc(sysdate)); My problem is with the date (actuality) check on b2. Now, I need to return a row for each t3xb1 (t3 = ~10 tables joined, of course), even if there are ONLY INVALID records (date-wise) in b2. How do I outer-join this bit properly? Can't use ANSI joins, must do in a single flat query. Thanks.

    I have a table as follows Table item { ID - Primary Key content - String published_date - When the content was published create_date - When this database entry was created } Every hour (or specified time interval) I run a process to update this table with data from different sources (websites). I want to display the results according to the following rules. 1. The entries created each time the process runs should be grouped together. So the entries from the 2nd process run will always be after the entries from the first process run even if the published_date of an entry from the first run is after the published_date of an entry from the 2nd run. 2. Within the grouping by run, the entries by sorted by published_date 3. Another restriction is that I prefer that data from the same source not be grouped together. If I do the sort by create_date, published_date I will end up with data from source a, data from source b etc. I prefer that the data within each hour be mixed up for better presentation If I add a column to this table and store a counter which increments each time the process is run, it is possible to create a query to sort first by counter and then by published_dt. Is there a way to do it without adding a field? I'm using Hibernate over MySQL. e.g. Hour 1 (run 1) 4 rows collected from site a (rows 1-4) 3 rows collected from site b (rows 5-7) hour 2 (run 2) 2 row collected from site a (rows 8-9) 3 rows collected from site b (rows 10-12) ... After each run, new records are added to the database from each website. The create date is the time when the record was created in the database. The published date is part of the content and is read in from the external source. When the results are displayed I would like rows to be grouped together based on the hour they were published in. So rows 1-7 would be displayed before rows 8-12. Within each hourly grouping, I would like to sort the results by published date (timestamp). This is necessary so that the posts from all the sites collected in that hour are not grouped together but rather mixed in with each other.
