• SEP Search Engine Placement

  My employer was recently contacted by a company who convinced my employer that they could do what they called search engine placement and that they can guaranty that we will be placed on he top of googles search results. I immediately told my employer that it sounded like a scam, but I was made to contact the company regardless and investigate. The sales person insisted that SEP was different than the SEO and ad words campaigns we are already performing and that it was a cheaper way to be listed in the adwords section and that it didn't include a cost per click. It sounds to me like its kinda scammy like they are going to setup an adwords campaign and just charge us a flat rate that is higher than the cost per clicks. Has anyone heard of this and is it at all legitimate?

  I have a curious question regarding on musics used in music rhythm game. In Guitar Hero for example, they used all different music albums in one program. Then, each album requires to ask permission to the owner, composer of the music, or the copyright owner of the music. Let's say, if you used 15 albums for the music rhythm game, then you have to contact 15 copyright owners and it might be that, for the game developer, that the profit earned goes to the copyright owner or owner of this music. For the independent game developers, was it okay if either used the copyright music by just mentioning the name of the singer included in the credits and in the music select screen or use the non-popular/old music that about 50 years ago? And, does still earn money for the indie game developers by making free downloadable game?

  Sometimes a Weblogic Server will be unreachable, there could be several reasons, the server is hang, down, and thus not responding to a ping, or it could be related to a network issue.A possible point of failure in the network layer are firewalls. You should contact your network team if you have following messages: java weblogic.Admin -adminurl t3://adminServer.mydomain.com:7777 -username admin -password lockdown PINGFailed to connect to t3://adminServer.mydomain.com:7777: Destination unreachable; nested exception is:java.net.SocketException: Connection reset; No available router to destination A possible work around for the ping command is to use the HTTP protocol, instead of the t3 protocol. To enable this you must configure WebLogic to do HTTP tunneling. To enable, access the administration console, click servers-> server you want to reach-> protocols -> http -> enable Tunneling. no restart is necessary. And then, following command will work: java weblogic.Admin -adminurl http://adminServer.mydomain.com:7777 -username igmadmin -password l0ckdown PING

• Any legal issue in developing app similar to others?

  There is a game I want to develop for mobile devices e.g. cellphone/tablet. I have been looking for this game and couldn't find it so I decide to just do it on my own. But I'm worried that there will be legal issues. I'm sorry but I do not know what is the process in doing this. I noticed for example the game Bejeweled Blitz. If I develop something similar, do I have to contact the developer and ask for permission if I develop a game with similar rules but use shapes rather than jewels? The original game exists only on Windows for free. If I develop the game, exactly similar rules but different display, am I allowed to sell it? Thanks...

  Birds may fly south for the winter, but I will be heading to Ottawa, Ontario next week for a workshop on 15-FEB. You might think that this is something usually uncommon for a company and you would be right. However, Oracle’s main value being innovation, we came up with a new project for Romanian students and graduates. We organised Oracle Summer School , offering them the opportunity to develop their soft skills and gain valuable business knowledge and exposure. How was Oracle Summer School programme organised? We focused on students and graduates’ needs and combined business experience with training and practice. The twenty four participants had different backgrounds, being interested in Software, Hardware, Finance, Marketing or other areas. The programme fulfilled each of these needs, bringing them in contact with Specialists and Managers. The first two weeks were dedicated to the company visits, business presentations and networking. The participants got an insight about employees’ activities and projects. Storytelling was also part of the program and people from different departments spent a couple of hours with the participants, sharing their experiences, knowledge and interesting stories. The Recruitment team delivered a training about the job interview skills in order to make the participants feel better prepared for a Recruitment process. The second module consisted of two weeks of Soft Skills trainings delivered by professional trainers from different departments. The participants gained useful insight on the competencies required within a business environment. The evenings were dedicated to social activities and it not very long until they started feel part of a team. The third module will take place at the end of September and will put the participants in contact with senior people from the business who will become their Mentors. What do the participants say about Oracle Summer School? “ As a fresh computer science graduate, Oracle Summer School gave me the opportunity of finding what are the technical and nontechnical skills required in a large multinational company. • Can't install Oracle J2EE due to "An internal Error has occurred"

  I am trying to install Oracle JavaEE 6 SDK with Glassfish on Ubuntu 12.04 with Java SDK 7. I have downloaded java_ee_sdk-6u4-jdk7-linux-x64.sh already, but when I run it on terminal, the wizard appears, and after few steps, I get an Error Message Dialog: An internal Error has occurred. Please contact your system administrator... null. And, the terminal is showing something like WARNING: Could not process a navigation event for command=AC_NEXT [Command=AC_NEXT Error=null ] What can I do? How can I install J2EE/Glassfish under linux x64?

• How do I join a channel on Freenode with Empathy?

  I have empathy already installed but am not sure how to configure it to join the channel at http://www.ape-project.org. I do not have a password or login name yet to properly configure the channel with Empathy and when I click "Join our IRC Channel" firefox comes back with an error stating: Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (irc) isn't associated with any program. What can I do to join this (freenode) channel? UPDATE 1 Using Empathy Version 2.23.1 When viewing accounts click "Add..." Protocol: "IRC" Network: "freenode" create new nickname, password, and real name. Then went back to ape-project.org link and click "Join our IRC Channel" again. It brings my Empathy contact list to the foreground but nothing happens...

• Updated Payroll Tax Liability Formula for Dynamics GP

  Prior to the latest Payroll Update for Great Plains, you could do an audit check of the Payroll Tax Liability GP calculation by simply taking Federal Tax Witholding + Fica Medicare Withholding times 2 + Fica SSN times 2.  As you probably know by now, the Employers portion of FICA is 6.2% and the Employers portion has been reduced to 4.2%. However, I have had a number of clients contact me and say this formula is no longer applicable and have asked for a revised formula.  The new formula is described below and ties out to a sample Payroll Run using Fabrikam.   As you can see from above, the prior formula is not applicable and the new audit check is as follows; Federal Tax WH  $                  6,655.17   Employee Medicare  $                     408.47   Employees SS  $                  1,746.54   Employer Medicare  $                     408.47   Employer SS  $                  1,746.55 (FICA Owned – FICA Medicare WH)       Total Tax Liability  $               10,965.20   I have talked with Microsoft and at this time, they have no intent on modifying the report to split out the employer (6.2%) and employee (4.2%) FICA portions.

• I'm on Charter's email blacklist, how do I get removed?

  I am a programmer in a local government agency. I found out today when I got to work that Charter Internet has blacklisted us for our mailing list that we run. This list is used for communicating news and alerts for our residents. Does anyone have a phone # I can use to contact Charter about this? Normally the email approach is fine, but we have yet another snow storm coming and 75 of our customers won't be alerted to a snow emergency if we have one and may possibly be towed as a result.

• October 2012 Chicago IT Architects Group Meeting Recap

  It seemed very ironic that the day we have a presentation on the architecture of building applications for Windows 8 the Surface tablet is opened for pre-order.  Tom Benton started the evening enlightening the attendees on the user experience for those who had not seen it yet.  He even passed around his table from last year’s Build conference for everyone to play with.  This was followed with a tour of the capabilities and structures that make up a Windows Store App on Windows 8.  Taking it to its conclusion, he rounded out the discussion by covering the certification and deployment process. • Correctly indexing multiple domains with same content in Google and others

  I have a client with a dozen territorial domains, like mydomain.co.uk, mydomain.fr, mydomain.de, etc Most of these domains hold a different language of the same dynamic content (shop), but some, like co.uk and .com, have the same language and content, except for some content customized to each country/domain in the front page, contact and other pages. I am aware that we should use the canonical meta tag to mark those duplicated contents, but, we want the co.uk to be present in UK ( indexed in google.co.uk ) and the .com to be present in US and other countries, for example, or least that is the goal. Is there anything we can do to "help" google determine the geographical meaning of each domain? If we mark with canonical tag the .com and co.uk sites, do you know how google will decide which one to show on a given search?

• Convenient practice for where to place images?

  A lot of developers place all image files inside a central directory, for example: /i/img/ /images/ /img/ Isn't it better (e.g. content architecture, on-page SEO, code maintainability, filename maintainability, etc.) to place them inside the relevant directories in which they are used? For example: example.com/logo.jpg example.com/about/photo-of-me.jpg example.com/contact/map.png example.com/products/category1-square.png example.com/products/category2-square.png example.com/products/category1/product1-thumb.jpg example.com/products/category1/product2-thumb.jpg example.com/products/category1/product1/product1-large.jpg example.com/products/category1/product1/product2-large.jpg example.com/products/category1/product1/product3-large.jpg What is the best practice here regarding all possible considerations (for static non-CMS websites)? N.B. The names product1-large and product1-thumb are just examples in this context to illustrate what kind of images they are. It is advised to use descriptive filenames for SEO benefit.

Are there any means to bring these blackhat companies to pushame to damage their reputation?
