• elisp compile, add a regexp to error detection

  I am starting with emacs, and don't know much elisp. Nearly nothing, really. I want to use ack as a replacement of grep. These are the instructions I followed to use ack from within emacs: http://www.rooijan.za.net/?q=ack_el Now I don't like the output format that is used in this el file, I would like the output to be that of ack --group. So I changed: (read-string "Ack arguments: " "-i" nil "-i" nil) to: (read-string "Ack arguments: " "-i --group" nil "-i --group" nil) So far so good. But this made me lose the ability to click-press_enter on the rows of the output buffer. In the original behaviour, compile-mode was used to be able to jump to the selected line. I figured I should add a regexp to the ack-mode. The ack-mode is defined like this: (define-compilation-mode ack-mode "Ack" "Specialization of compilation-mode for use with ack." nil) and I want to add the regexp [0-9]+: to be detected as an error too, since it is what every row of the output bugger includes (line number). I've tried to modify the define-compilation-modeabove to add the regexp, but I failed miserably. How can I make the output buffer of ack let me click on its rows? --- EDIT, I tried also: --- (defvar ack-regexp-alist '(("[0-9]+:" 2 3)) "Alist that specifies how to match rows in ack output.") • typeid , dynamic casting (upcast) and templates

  Hello, I have few questions regarding dynamic casting , typeid() and templates 1) How come typeid does not require RTTI ? 2) dynamic_cast on polymorphic type: When I do downcast (Base to Derive) with RTTI - compilation passes When RTTI is off - I get a warning (warning C4541: 'dynamic_cast' used on polymorphic type 'CBase' with /GR-; unpredictable behavior may result) When I do upcast (Derive to Base), with or without RTTI - compilation passes smoothly What I don't understand is why when I do upcast and RTTI is off - I don't get any warning/error! 3) dynamic_cast on NON polymorphic type: When I do downcast with or without RTTI - compilation fails (error C2683: 'dynamic_cast' : 'CBase' is not a polymorphic type) BUT When I do upcast with or without RTTI - compilation passes smoothly. How come on upcast on NON polymorphic type passes w/o RTTI ? 4) Does 'inline' in front of a template function has any effect, i.e. when the compiler compiles the function and see it is 'inline' it will actually treat the function as inline or it is ignored? • Is there any way to evaluate (expand-file-name) in .dir-locals.el?

  I'm trying to move all my compilation config (compilation-command and compilation-directory to be exact) to .dir-locals.el file at the top of my project. It is working fine except that I can't find the way to use expand-file-name there and without it I have to use absolute path, which is not really convenient. So, is there a way (or a dirty hack) to make local directory variables to evaluate values before assigning?

• How to force VS 2010 to skip "builds" of projects which haven't changed?

  Our product's solution has more than 100+ projects (500+ksloc of production code). Most of them are C# projects but we also have few using C++/CLI to bridge communication with native code. Rebuilding the whole solution takes several minutes. That's fine. If I want to rebuilt the solution I expect that it will really take some time. What is not fine is time needed to build solution after full rebuild. Imagine I used full rebuild and know without doing any changes to to the solution I press Build (F6 or Ctrl+Shift+B). Why it takes 35s if there was no change? In output I see that it started "building" of each project - it doesn't perform real build but it does something which consumes significant amount of time. That 35s delay is pain in the ass. Yes I can improve the time by not using build solution but only build project (Shift+F6). If I run build project on particular test project I'm currently working on it will take "only" 8+s. It requires me to run project build on correct project (the test project to ensure dependent tested code is build as well). At least ReSharper test runner correctly recognizes that only this single project must be build and rerunning test usually contains only 8+s compilation. My current coding Kata is: don't touch Ctrl+Shift+B. The test project build will take 8s even if I don't do any changes. The reason why it takes 8s is because it also "builds" dependencies = in my case it "builds" more than 20 projects but I made changes only to unit test or single dependency! I don't want it to touch other projects. Is there a way to simply tell VS to build only projects where some changes were done and projects which are dependent on changed ones (preferably this part as another build option)? I worry you will tell me that it is exactly what VS is doing but in MS way ... I want to improve my TDD experience and reduce the time of compilation (in TDD the compilation can happen twice per minute). To make this even more frustrated I'm working in a team where most of developers used to work on Java projects prior to joining this one. So you can imagine how they are pissed off when they must use VS in contrast to full incremental compilation in Java. I don't require incremental compilation of classes. I expect working incremental compilation of solutions. Especially in product like VS 2010 Ultimate which costs several thousands dollars. I really don't want to get answers like: Make a separate solution Unload projects you don't need etc. I can read those answers here. Those are not acceptable solutions. We're not paying for VS to do such compromises.

I cannot pass g to f because of compilation error (no matching function for call to f(int&, void (&)(int&)) ). If g would take non-reference parameter g(int s), compilation finishes. • How does a java compiler resolve a non-imported name

  Consider I use a type X in my java compilation unit from package foo.bar and X is not defined in the compilation unit itself nor is it directly imported. How does a java compiler resolve X now efficiently? There are a few possibilities where X could reside: X might be imported via a star import a.b.* X might reside in the same package as the compilation unit X might be a language type, i.e. reside in java.lang The problem I see is especially (2.). Since X might be a package-private type, it is not even required that X resides in a compilation unit that is named X.java. Thus, the compiler must look into all entries of the class path and search for any classes in a package foo.bar, it then must read every class that is in package foo.bar to check whether X is included. That sounds very expensive. Especially when I compile only a single file, the compiler has to read dozens of class files only to find a type X. If I use a lot of star imports, this procedure has to be repeated for a lot of types (although class files won't be read twice, of course). So is it advisable to import also types from the same package to speed up the compilation process? Or is there a faster method for resolving an unimported type X which I was not able to find?

I read, on adobe's documentation, the client automatically sends a "request-policy-file" xml element to the socket before allowing it to be opened, and should receive a policy file.   How to I get my security policy working? My parent swf parses an XML doc and loads 2 children. It throws a 2148 security error, and only works in the Flash IDE. • SMB2 traffic crashes network?

  We've been having significant network slowdown issues over the past few weeks, primarily on a Friday morning. We run Windows 7 client machines, with Windows Server 2008 R2 servers. What generally happens is the network starts to slow down massively at 08:55 and resumes normal speeds at around 09:20 This affects everything on the network from logging on, resetting passwords, opening programs and files etc. On my client machine, Physical Memory usage remains at around 40% (normal) and CPU usage hovers around 0-10% idle. The servers show memory usage spikes massively and remains quite intense during the times mentioned above. I have taken several wireshark captures, both during the slowdown and when the network operates fine. One of the main things I noticed is the increase in SMB2 entries in the wireshark log during the slowdown. One of the interesting things to note is the last entry in the examples above is for a PDF file. That file was not open anywhere on my computer, or on anyone elses. No folders with the files in were open either. When I took another capture when the network was running fine, there were hardly any SMB2 entries, and the ones that were displayed were mainly from Wireshark. We currently have around 800 computers, 90 Macs and 200 Laptops and Netbooks. Our concern is if this traffic is happening on my computer, is it happening on other computers, and if so, would those computers be adding to the slow network issues? Again, this only happens during certain times. We're pretty sure its not the our antivirus. Is there anything to narrow down whats initializing this SMB traffic during the particular times? Or if anyone has any extra advice, or links to resources it would be appreciate.

• Is there a 64-bit Windows 7 driver for a Logitech Wingman Formula Force wheel?

  I've used my Logitech Wingman Formula Force wheel for more years than I can remember (I definitely had it back when I was playing Viper Racing, though). Sadly, Logitech does not appear to support the wheel in any capacity, even as an analog input device. At this point, I'm looking for any sort of driver that will take input from the device. I don't care at all about the force feedback but, if it were available, I'd be happy to take it. The target operating system is Windows 7 64-bit. EDIT: Just in case I'm not clear above: I know where the standard driver download sites are and have tried them out. The problem is that Logitech has officially end-of-lifed this wheel so their latest software specifically does not support it. Sadly, their older software that does support it is 32-bit only so I'm out of luck on that front.

• Building a Social Networking website, should I have separate servers for certain parts of the site? [closed]

  I have been working on building a social networking website, I'm pretty committed to this and I think I have something that could work out. I hope to be launching it January 1st, and so I have a question for server setup and such. Facebook has separate domain names/servers for their photos (and I don't know what else), so I would assume that by doing this it would help spread the server loads out. So I am wondering if it would make a very big difference in speed if I had my main server for basically everything, but had another server and such that the photos would be stored on and access them the same way that facebook does.

• How can I recover a Fedora 12 installation that is showing signs of disk errors?

  I am currently overseas (i.e., very far from my normal library of tools) and my primary machine that would normally act as the data server in the performance test that we're trying to run is failing to boot to Fedora 12 properly. This is a machine that, as of yesterday, was booting fine. However, this morning, very strange portions of the boot process were complaining with messages such as "unexpected 0x0 in rpcbind" and "bad file descriptor" (I don't have the error in front of me - scavenged a windows installation to get onto serverfault). Eventually, the boot hung for a long time at the NFS service and then brought up what looked like the KDE login screen but neither the mouse nor keyboard functioned. In olden days, I would try to get to a point where I could manage to run fsck and pray that the bad sectors would come back into alignment just long enough for me to scrape the critical data off of the machine. However, now that we live in the future, it seems like our options in situations like this should be a little more varied. Is there a way to recover a Fedora 12 installation with bad disk sectors that won't boot properly? For completeness, I am comfortable working with bootable recovery distros-on-CD and such but I don't know which one is likely to work best with modern Fedora. In the absence of guidance, I'm frantically torrenting the Fedora 12 Live CD and DVD, hoping to try rescue mode before tomorrow morning.

• How do I install yum on Redhat Enterprise 4?

  For historical reasons, one of the machines that I manage has a Redhat Enterprise 4 boot disk (among others). Every now and then, we have to boot into RHEL4 to bring up some of the legacy software that we support and connect to. Since it's a fringe system, the Redhat support has long since lapsed and I can't convince myself that it would be worth paying just to get RPMs that I can go and get for myself. That said, the default RHEL tools are heavily biased against letting you do exactly that. I would like to install yum and use that as my package discovery and installation. So, is there an installation guide to integrating yum with an older RHEL 4 system?

• Is there a direct URL to download Java JDK updates?

  I have a whole set of machines that are on the other side of a firewall configured to prevent all Javascript from functioning. All of them (Linux 32 and 64 bit configurations) must be updated to Java 6 update 20. This is a problem given Sun/Oracle's URL redirector and download manager: they simply don't appear or don't work. Is there a URL to download the JDK updates and bypass the redirect? Obviously, a yum configuration that would allow for automatic updates would be optimal but I'd be happy to just have the rpm file.

  The inspiration of this question is the Gadget Lab article How To Make Your Kindle Into an Automatic Instapaper. In that article, they describe an implementation of an Automator workflow that: Detects the connection of a portable disk (which the workflow assumes is the Kindle 2). Downloads the Instapaper mobi file containing the text version of the articles marked for "Read Later" to the computer. Downloads the mobi file from the computer to the Kindle 2. All of this is straightforward in terms of functionality but it is not immediately obvious how to do step 1 on a Windows box. Is the Task Scheduler the first step? If so, which event should be the trigger for the rest of the task?

• Computers on network crashing

  We have recently upgraded our network to Windows 7 clients with Windows server 2008 servers. The upgrade was completed by the end of September and until now has been fine (apart from the minor bugs). Recently (within the last 2 weeks) we've notice all computers on the network (around 1000) start to slow down to the point their unusable. It starts at about 08:45 and finishes at 09:15. Because of this, we think something may be broadcasting across the network. This happens every day, between these times. I cant use my computer at all at the slowdown peak, and looking at task managers performance graphs, Physical memory is hovering around 35% and CPU usage is at 0-10% (idle) yet still crashing. I've looked on DHCPs server log and cant see anything which stands out. The only change we made prior to the slowdown was installing adobe CS6 on some computers, however the slowdown affects computers without CS6. We have 2 physical machines, each with around 5-7 virtual machines running on them with ample memory. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we can do to narrow down whats causing the crashes? Any help, suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

• Issues with ASP.NET via Apache/mod_mono on Ubuntu.

  I run an Ubuntu test server, and my deployment system is also Ubuntu. I've recently been trying to get ASP.NET to work on my test server so that we can take it live. I managed to get it installed, and configured properly, and my application is installed and running, but I can't get anything to work. The error I keep receiving is below, if anyone has any clue what might be going on, it would be greatly appreciated. • Why is 32-bit-mode required in IIS7.5 for my app?

  I have a .net4 web application running in a 64 bits 2008 server. I can only get it to run when I set the app pool to Enable 32-bits application to true. All dlls are compiled for .net4 (verified with corflags.exe). How can I figure out why Enable 32-bit is required? • Upgrading SSIS Custom Components for SQL Server 2012

  Having finally got around to upgrading my custom components to SQL Server 2012, I thought I’d share some notes on the process. One of the goals was minimal duplication, so the same code files are used to build the 2008 and 2012 components, I just have a separate project file. The high level steps are listed below, followed by some more details. Create a 2012 copy of the project file Upgrade project, just open the new project file is VS2010 Change target framework to .NET 4.0 Set conditional compilation symbol for DENALI Change any conditional code, including assembly version and UI type name Edit project file to change referenced assemblies for 2012 Change target framework to .NET 4.0 Open the project properties. On the Applications page, change the Target framework to .NET Framework 4. Set conditional compilation symbol for DENALI Re-open the project properties. On the Build tab, first change the Configuration to All Configurations, then set a Conditional compilation symbol of DENALI. Change any conditional code, including assembly version and UI type name The value doesn’t have to be DENALI, it can actually be anything you like, that is just what I use. It is how I control sections of code that vary between versions. There were several API changes between 2005 and 2008, as well as interface name changes. The sites may run for days/weeks before this occurs, or it might happen twice within the hour. I have not been able to pinpoint this to any specific request/function in our system. In this case it points to itextsharp, but it randomly points to any assembly referenced by our application, both internal and external. Running caspol verifies that the DLL has full trust permissions: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727>caspol -rsg D:\...\bin\itextsharp.dll Microsoft (R) .NET Framework CasPol 2.0.50727.3053 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All code: FullTrust Success Our application is running on three servers, two of them are on Server 2008 Web x64 while the third is running Server 2008 R2 Web x64, all have .NET 3.5 installed, no .NET 4.0 installations. The problem only occurs on the first two that are running 2008 non R2. Running depends.exe on all three servers gives equal results for the nonR2 servers: My DLL is shown as x86 (compiled as AnyCPU, running in x64 w3wp), all other modules show as x64. Missing IESHIMS.DLL and LINKINFO.DLL - both of these seem to be red herrings according to Google. The third server shows the same, except it does not miss LINKINFO.DLL All servers are running IIS7 (7.5 for the R2 one) under a custom domain account that has been granted the necessary permissions: aspnet_regiis -ga [user] Load user profile is set to false on all three servers. I've tried setting this to true on one of the faulting servers, according to: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1846816/iis7-failed-to-grant-minimum-permission-requests By running processmonitor I can see that it's now using the C:\Users\TEMP\AppData\Local\Temp directory for various temp files - the other ones are not using any such directory. So far I'll let it run in this way to see if this changes anything. I'm in doubt however given that the third server is not exhibiting the problems, yet still has "Load user profile" set to the same value, false. I've also tried running Fuslogvw on all three servers, logging binding failures to disk. All three servers report the same binding errors for VJSharpCodeProvider and CppCodeProvider, but these seem to be normal as well and can be solved by not defining the DEBUG and TRACE constants during build. We're running about 500 websites on each server (identical, load balanced), of which 50 are under moderate load, the problem has arisen both under heavy load as well as under minimal load however. Right now I'm waiting for the errors to happen again so I can hopefully see a pattern and determine whether "Load user profile" alleviates the issue. Any suggestions in the meantime would be very welcome! Also, I don't understand how the lack of "Load user profile" would cause an issue like this? And even further, how it would seemingly work on R2 but not on plain 2008? Thanks!

• word 2010 caption list

  I created a document by word 2010 in which I inserted captions for pictures and cross reffernec. I saved the document in my computer and emailed it to a colleague. When she opened the document in her computer, the caption list ( numbers which were cross referenced to pictures ) was not avaiable and she was not able to add refference to a picture or change an existing cross refference. It seems that caption list is only avaiable in the computer which the document is created.
