• Bitdefender rescue disk does not show my C drive

  My machine (winXP) is infected with virus and I am unable to start my machine. Therefore I have used BitDefender rescue disk to remove the viruses. But I am not able to see my C drive. All other drivers are able to see and scan. Even after I removed all viruses, my machine is not starting. Giving the same error message. I think due to viruse it is not visible to bitdefender. Please help me out. Appreciate your help.

  What are some rough performance limits (read/s, write/s) for a single database server (no master-slave architecture), assuming storage on disk? How many read/s, write/s, depending on the kind of disk? (SSD vs non-SSD) , assuming simple operations (select one row by primary key, update one row, correctly indexed). I assume this limit is dependent on disk seek/write. EDIT: My question is more about getting rough metrics of the number of operations a database supports: to be able to know for example, if a new feature triggering 300 inserts/s can be supported without scaling out with additional servers.

• SQL Server 2008, not enough disk space

  Hello, I'm executing sql query on my database. I have SQL Server 2008 installed on my D harddrive which has 55 GB free space. I have also C drive which has sth like 150 MB free (right now). While executing that query on quite a big table (16 GB) I have an error: An error occurred while executing batch. Error message is: Not enough disk space. I would like to know if there is any possibility that I can make SQL Server to use D drive instead of C Or maybe there is any other problem with what I'm doing ? Thanks for help

• Software/FakeRAID: Windows 8 Disk Mirroring vs Intel Onboard

  So Windows 8 is out and I have a new motherboard. I wish to create a RAID 1 coupling between two HDDs -- for storage purposes only (my OS is on an SSD) -- but I don't know which is the best route to take. My motherboard (Z77 chipset) comes with the age old Intel Fake RAID, but since I only wish to use my RAID for storage, I wondered if I might be better to use Windows 8 Disk Mirroring. Can anyone advise which is better? Or perhaps the pros and cons of each, if that's too contentious? I just can't see the benefit of FakeRAID. • Shrink a mounted LVM partition

  I fear I already know the answer to this question, but here goes. I need to carve out a new partition on a running system. /var/ is mounted from an LVM volume (hdd1_vg-var) and has only 3% used disk space. / is mounted separately (hdd1_vg-root) and has about 80% used disk space. Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/**/hdd1_vg-root 2.0G 1.4G 481M 75% / /dev/**/hdd1_vg-var 33G 699M 31G 3% /var Unfortunately I don't have any free extents to grow this partition organically - vgdisplay shows: Total PE 10000 Alloc PE / Size 10000 / 39.06 GB Free PE / Size 0 / 0 So seeing that I have all this free disk space on /var/, can I shrink /var/ without un-mounting it or is this just a pipe dream? I am really hoping to be able to do this work on a running system - un-mounting would of course not be difficult but it would interfere with system functionality.

• CentOS - Disk Quota X% warning

  I currently have disk quotas working perfectly for Hard Limit Quotas on a CentOS 5 box. Quotas are working fine, but I am looking for a way to alert users either in a Cron or Automatically as Quotas is already running, when they are within X% of their Hard Limit Quota? I would like this email to go out to an email address I configure somehow for each user. I've looked all over the place but can't find it. All I can find is warnquota which only works when a user goes over Quota. The problem is I use Hard Limits, so my users will never go over quota. It needs to warn them when they are within X% of their limits.

  I've just fitted two disks to my home server. I'm trying to format and then raid them but I'm getting a problem that hours of Googling hasn't resolved this.   Aiming to have a large internal HDD to store files, and several OSes on separate disks. They all need to read and write to one storage drive. Ubuntu (13.04+) Mac OSX (10.8+) Windows (7+) What format should the drive be? Would like to avoid buying third party software, here's what I have discerned so far: NTFS - Can't be written to by Mac without buying third party software? ext3 - Windows can't read, third party software in development. Mac has OSXFUSE HFS+ - Buy third party and/or faff around to get working on windows exFAT - Cross platform, but breaks MS patents?

• Windows 2008 VPS always crashes when out of disk space

  Hello, I am renting a Windows server 2008 dc SP2 VPS for hosting my Asp.Net projects. Now for the second time this month my VPS ran out of disk space. The first time it was a log file that got to big and yesterday it was my mistake for uploading a website without noticing the lack of space on my VPS. Now the side effect this has is that my VPS corrupts some files when trying to write them. Last time it was Plesk that stopped working yesterday it was IIS. So I was wondering is this normal behavior? I called my service provider to ask if they could restore a back-up and to ask if this is normal and they ensured me it was. I am not trying to blame them and I know it's mostly my fault for not monitoring my VPS better or for not setting better defaults.

• Reimage several of the same model PC by copying the hard disk

  I have several of the same machine (Dell Precision T3500) that originally came with Windows 7 Pro (there is a Windows 7 Pro OA product key sticker on top of each one). These were initially downgraded to XP by a former IT colleague, but are now back in the pool of unused machines. I am looking to format and install Windows 7 Pro on one of them using the latest official Win7 installer ISO with SP1 and then clone the hard drive to the other machines. The questions then, are: Does this even make sense, or is there a better way to do this considering I'm only doing it to 6 machines? Does this jive with MS licensing (we are the original purchaser of the machines, and thus, presumably, the license holder...but I'm no expert)? Is it possible to apply the individual 25-char product keys to the cloned machines after cloning? How far can I go in the config process (installing corporate standard apps and such) before I have to clone to the other machines considering the licensing/key questions?

• How to reduce disk thrashing (paging)?

  I have 4 GB of RAM, but Windows still thrashes disk sometimes (especially often when an application is minimized for some time and then I activate it again). Completely stupid, because Task Manager shows 2 GB of RAM are free. Is there any way to prevent Windows swapping out program memory? I tried setting Superfetch to cache startup files only (it helped a bit) and turning off paging file (it helped much, and worked well for me in Windows XP; but Windows Vista/Windows 7 don't allow that - it shows "low on memory" message frequently, even when I have 1 GB of RAM free.) What can you advise me to do?

  I'm using Vyatta routers with KVM and want to attach a floppy drive with a config file for Vyatta when I boot the image. I'll be doing this over and over again, and as such am looking for an automated way of creating the floppy images. Right now, I'm doing the following: Create floppy image with qemu-img create Format floppy image with mkdosfs Mount floppy image with mount -t fat /tmp/floppy.img /media/floppy Populate floppy image with cp -r /tmp/configs/ /media/floppy/ Unmount floppy image with umount /media/floppy Save floppy image with mv /tmp/floppy.img ~/floppies/ Any chance there's an easier way to do this?! Perhaps a shortcut application that I can give a directory to and it will do all this for me w/out having to mount the image?

  I have a Java application performing a large volume (hundreds of MB) of continuous output (streaming plain text) to about a dozen files a ext3 SAN filesystem. Occasionally, this application pauses for several seconds at a time. I suspect that something related to ext3 vsfs (Veritas Filesystem) functionality (and/or how it interacts with the OS) is the culprit. What steps can I take to confirm or refute this theory? I am aware of iostat and /proc/diskstats as starting points. • ASUS EeePC 1001PX, hard disk clicking in Ubuntu Maverick

  I just received my new Asus EeePC 1001px netbook. After installing Ubuntu 10.10 on it, I've noticed that my hard drive is making a clicking noise. Now this is not a loud clicking noise nor it's constant (only sounds occasionally and when hard disk is not writing or reading anything). Another strange thing is, this only happens when netbook is using battery power, the moment I plug in AC power clicking stops. Additionally I noticed that when I go into BIOS I can hear the click only once, same thing happens if I boot Ubuntu from USB. That led me to believe the problem is within operating system. I did all the surface scans and SMART tests and everything seems to be fine. Now noise sounds like heads are trying to "park" themselves so I tried disabling "spin down" option in Power Management but it didn't help. Any idea?

Here is the Minidump: Bug Check Code = 0x00000124 Caused By Driver = ntoskrnl.exe Caused By Address = ntoskrnl.exe+4b094c Crash Address = ntoskrnl.exe+4b094c Seems to be hardware problem, but I checked RAM, no error. I have two HDs installed, system is on SSD, data is on HDD. Checked SSD with the properties-tools-error-checking , no error. Re-installed several times, still happens even after removed HDD. Configuration: SSD: Crucial M4-CT064M4SSD2 with Firmware 0009 Intel HM65 CPU: i7-2630QM The SSD is set correctly, SATA III 6Gb/s enabled, and everything worked perfectly for nearly a year.

• Setting the date format in Atlassian Crucible

  When I set up a review in Atlassian Crucible, and I set a date, it displays it in DD/MM/YYYY I'd like to switch that over to MM/DD/YYYY, but I don't see anywhere in the configuration to switch that. The closest setting I see is for the timezone, which I have set to EST. I have Crucible running on a CentOS 6.2 machine that's set to UTC I'm using Crucible version 2.7.14 Build:20120612060728 2012-06-12 My locale is currently set to en_US.UTF-8 > locale | grep LC_TIME LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8" Can someone point out how I can switch the date format in Crucible ?

• Ubuntu 12.04 doesn't detect hard disk partitions

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit on an ASUS Laptop and wanted to install it in another one, the ASUS A55V. After booting the laptop and setting up Windows 7 (I unfortunately cannot wipe out Windows), and creating one extra partition to install Ubuntu there, when I reboot from USB and launch Ubuntu installation, it doesn't recognize any partition on /dev/sda, but shows the whole disk as unpartitioned. I guess this is due to UEFI, but I don't know how I can make Ubuntu see the partitions created by Windows. Or any workaround for this to be able to install Ubuntu on /dev/sda. Thanks in advance

  I'm new to digital books and I use the Kindle app for Windows to read the books I bought but I hate how I can't read the bottom paragraph of a book in the Kindle app in the centre of the monitor; I have to bend my neck down and it gets sore fast. Problem is that I can't move the Kindle book page up or halfway as when I'm reading a PDF document; if you try to move the page in Kindle it skips to the next new page. So, I thought maybe converting my books to PDF will solve the problem. How do I convert Kindle books into the PDF format? Does anyone have another solution? • Alerting when a RAID Array disk fails locally on VMWare ESX or ESXi System

  With ESX and ESXi, we recently had two systems where that the boot partition became degraded due to a failed disk. The only alert we managed to capture was the visual alert on the Dell servers. We failed to received any electronic alerts regarding the failed or degraded array. Does anyone have any experience with monitoring for these types of failures? In both cases, the servers were running in a RAID 5 SCSI configuration (5 disks on one system, 3 disks on another) which if we were running a Windows Server OS, we would have had an alert created in the Eventviewer. Where would I begin to look for this solution. Can it be configured in VCenter or vFoglight?

  Hello, I am trying to write a reward system wherein users will be given reward points if they download complete files, So what should be my log format. After searching alot this is what I understand its my first time and havent done custom logs before. First of all which file should I edit for custom logs because this thing I cant find.   When trying to install CentOs setup as an iso image on datastore, i get an error : "Disk Not Found". I am using ESXi 4.1 as host VM. Is there a way to attach DVD/CD as iso image ? I tried "Connect at Power on" Checked and Connect CD/DVD on the VSphere Console, but i still am unable ot get the iso image recognized as a DVD mounted image: Solved: if i look at the image size, it was 11 MB, so it WAS a boot iso, but nithing else, if we compare it with other boot images with complete iso's therein lies the solution. This boot.iso was from rBUILD/Conary packaging

• changing filesystem format from jfx to ext4 without losing data

  I have a fresh Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04) running on a laptop. where I defined the filesystems as: mount point / on ext4 (46 Gb) mount point /home on jfs (63 GB) swap as 3 Gb I left the machine over night to do some task, without AC power supply. next day in the morning I found it on standby, task completed, but filesystem was not reachable. it gave me I/O error it seems that there is a problem with jfs and standby. anyways, to avoid any hassle, I want to move this mount point from jfs format to ext4. can I do this without losing data and without the need to place the data in a temporary location until transformation is done? sorry to mention that, but I recall back in the windows days, we would change a FAT16 to FAT32 or a FAT32 to NTFS without having to lose the data. I hope this is available on Linux.

• Unrecognized file format .mdb in Microsoft Access -- repair doesn't fix it

  So what I have is a file from a staff computer that I believe is an access file b/c its called .mdb, however it does not open! I even tried to follow the repair steps (create a new file and use the "compact and repair" tool. and all I keep getting is "unrecognized file format *.mdb" (replace the * with the filename). I am not even sure it is an access file. I have tried using Office 2007 and office 2010 but neither work. Is there a way to fix this that is not on the Microsoft website? Or to determine whether this is actually an access file and not some other file with the extension renamed? Any help would be appricated, thanks.

  My case is: In our China company, we have to access one web server in USA headquarter through Internet. But network is too slow, and we download many big image files. All our developers have to wait. So we want to setup a Nginx which acts as reverse proxy, its upstream is our USA web server. Question is can we make Nginx save the image files from USA web server into its local disk? I mean let Nginx act as one cache server.
