• ubuntu 12.04 server doesn't resolve local domain name

  After apt-get upgrade this morning, my Ubuntu 12.04 web server does no longer resolve a domain name hosted on it. I also received the error message: "resolvconf: Error: /etc/resolv.conf isn't a symlink, not doing anything." I found this question Network Manager not populating resolv.conf but the solutions provided there did not resolve the problem. Creating the symlink in fact caused websites to load very slowly, so I assume there is some sort of (reverse?) DNS lookup not working, when I create the symlink.

• Have two exchange servers to communicate together

  We have Exchange Server 2007 using our domain ddd.com. We created an isolated network with a firewall/gateway and installed a DC and Exchange Server 2010 using a demo/test domain (ddd.loc). We opened all the needed ports in the firewall (10.10.2.88) to the Exchange Server 2010. In our main Domain Controller (10.10.2.3) we defined the domain ddd.loc with IP 10.10.2.88 (firewalls). We also we defined MX records to the same IP (10.10.2.88) We did that so when we send email from my email [email protected] it will go to the Exchange Server 2010. Anyways, all the pings test from to any servers are OK. But we are not able to send or receive emails. Between these Exchange Servers we can not send any email from the 2010 to any email in general (emails are pending). Also, in Exchange 2007 we are getting error #550 5.1.1 RESOLVER.ADR.RecipNotFound; not found ##

• Why can't non-admin users install software?

  This is probably something I don't understand since I am used to Windows and am only starting out with Ubuntu. I know that software in linux comes in packages what I don't understand is why can't non-admin users install software. I mean, every application is run by a specific user, and that user will only be able to run that applciation with his privilages, so if he has no admin privileges, the application also won't be able to access unauthorized directories etc. I want most of the time to work on my PC with a non-admin user since it seems more safe to me, most of the time I have no need for admin privileges. and even though I know viruses in linux are uncommon I still think the best practice is to work on the computer in a state that you yourself can't make any changes to important files, that way viruses also can't harm any important files, but I need to install software for programming and web-design etc. and first of all I don't want to switch users all the time. But also it sounds safer to me that everything being done on the PC will be done through the non-admin user. I'll be glad to know what misunderstanding I have here, cause something here doesn't sound right.

• Change guest username

  Now, looking around on Google shows me some ways in which to customise the settings of the Guest session. But, I would love a way to change the name of the Guest account. Basically, I'm planning to take some laptops out to a school in Africa and want to rename the "Guest" account in 14.04 to "Student" so the students use that. They tend to store stuff on USB sticks and they're using the Guest account so they can't break anything. EDIT: I'll expand on this slightly. They're using the guest account simply for the reason it doesn't save anything after logoff. This was a specific thing the teachers have asked for. I don't mind if the actual username remains guest behind the scenes, but as long as it shows up as Student to on Unity. Any way of going about this?

• How to run a complete GUI as root?

  I don't care if I mess up the system (which is likely if I do things like this), or the potential security issues that this could imply. Note, that I don't just want to "enable root login?", but run my GUI from bottom-up as root. I don't want to type my password for anything but just for login and have total control over it. Of course, I want any application running as root, like Firefox, LibreOffice, etc. without having to mess up with the terminal. So, how do I do this?

• Can I create a DC without a DNS Server?

  So as the title says, I need to promote a standalone Win2008R2 server to a Domain Controller, and I don't a DNS Server (I think), as there will be no clients connected to the domain, it will be only used for Remote Desktop Services. Yes, I know, it's considered bad practice to install other roles on the DC, but in this case, it's necessary. Do I need to install the DNS Server, and if I do, how to make it as transparent as possible? EDIT: Seems that I need to install the DNS Server, so I can I configure it not to mess up my entire domain? For example: The server I need to promote is rdc.mydomain.com, and it has an A entry to it's IP in the current DNS, while other servers under mydomain.com are running Linux and don't need to know anything about this Windows box. The domain uses a third-party DNS and all edits and updates need to be done via a separate web page, our servers don't have write/update access.

• Should I use a separate 'admin' user as my "root sudo" or grant sudo to my 'app' user?

  I'm still wrapping my brain around the Ubuntu 'nullify root' user management philosophy (and Linux in general) and I'm wondering if I should 'replace' my root user with a user called 'admin' (which basically has all the powers of the root, when using sudo) and create another user called 'app' that will be the primary user for my app. Here's the context: I'll be running a LNMP stack on Ubuntu 12.04 Server LTS. There will be only one app running on the server. The 'app' user needs to have SUPER privileges for MySQL. PHP will need to be able to exec() shell commands. The 'app' user will need to be able to transfer files via SFTP. And I'm thinking this would be the best approach: nullify 'root' user create a user called 'admin' that will be a full sudoer of root, this will be the new "root" user of NGINX, PHP, and MySQL (and all system software) grant SUPER privileges to 'app' in MySQL Grant SFTP privileges to only the 'app' user. As I'm new to this, and the information I've found in researching it tends to be of a more general nature, I'm wondering if this is a solid approach, or if it's unorthodox in a way that would cause issues down the road.   Within a DDD and CQRS context, a query result is displayed as table rows. Whenever new rows are inserted or deleted, their positions must be calculated by comparing the previous query result with the most recent one. This is needed to visualize with an animation new or deleted rows. The model of my view contains an array of the displayed query results. But I need a place to compare its contents against the latest query. Right now I consider my model view part of my application layer, but the comparison of two query result sets seems something that must be done within the domain layer. Which component should cache a query result and which one compare them? Are view models (and their cached contents) supposed to be in the application layer?

• How to batch remove spamming users and pages they created on MediaWiki?

  I'm trying to clean up a MediaWiki instance which has been subjected to spamming and vandalism for a period of time. The current status is that there are a large number of users which only created spam pages but typically not altered legitimate pages. And there is only < 10 users which I know are legitimate users and created a small number of legitimate pages. Abstractly, my idea of fixing the messy situation is to find the complete list of users that are not in that small set of legitimate users, and use RenameUser extension to rename them all to a Spammer user, and use Nuke extension to mass delete all pages it created. Any practical advice on how to proceed? Since there are hundreds of spammer users, how do I effectively rename them? It seems Renameuser extension does not support automated batch renaming of users by allowing users to be renamed with a list or file.

  Title was a little hard to work, but take this as an example. User goes to site, creates account, and then has his/her own profile to edit. Let's say the profile includes height, weight, sex, eye color, etc.. I've really only used wordpress before, but I'm sure something else would cater to this better. • What is the best method to determine an account through DNS A record configuration?

  I apologize if my description of the problem is unclear. I am working for an online CMS that allows external domains to be used similar to Tumblr or Flavors.me. I noticed both of these services simply require you to add an A record to your domain's DNS. When trying this, I added an A record for a blank name and "www" both leading to my webserver's IP. While this successfully routes to my server, it doesn't retain the used domain. This leaves me without any idea of what account they're attempting to reach at the application layer. I'm using nginx as my webserver. I have changed all the nameservers for a domain before, and that works properly, however that causes complications with other issues such as mail and isn't feasible on a scaled solution. What should I be doing here? Is the A record the correct method of accomplishing this? How are sites like Tumblr and Flavors.me determining which account is being referenced by the domain?

I have domain "www.mydomain.com" where I have magento website running, we are in development stage so I did URL forwarding "www.mydomain.com" to "www.mydomain.net" and we have under-construction page on "www.mydomain.net'. Because we do not want to show development. I also have subdomain "beta.mydomain.com" which I pointed to "www.mydomain.com/index.php" which works fine. But how can I show this without changing URL in browser from "beta.mydomain.com" to "www.mydomain.com/index.php" this we want to show our development to management.

I've read on Redirecting different domains to your main site that it's not a bad idea to register another domain that does a 301 redirect to my website, like booksforsale.com. Now, say I want to only target a specific category withing my website, like books.com/sci-fi/ so I register sci-fi-books.com and do a 301 redirect. Would this improve my search rankings? Thanks.

• How to select which account is logged in at system startup, or none?

  I'm helping out some friends with a tiny hospitality business where one desktop computer has some files used by the business in one account "hotel" but it's mostly used by guests for browsing the web in another account "guest". It's low security, we're not worried about hacking or anything. But we don't want people accidentally moving our files or anything either. But the system always boots into the "hotel" account without asking for a password, even though the account has a password. We want it to boot into the "guest" account. I know a bit about computers generally and Linux but not much about Ubuntu and the ever-changing graphical environment the Linuxes are going through these days. We've looked through the obvious settings/preferences/options and I've done some Googling. I know this should be obvious easy stuff but I can't find it. (We're running 10.04 LTS on a generic aging Intel box.)

• How to set individual NTFS partitions permissions behaviour for each user account?

  I have two NTFS partitions (DOWNLOADS for downloaded files and VM for my VirtualBox .vdi file) for which i must have full permissions for my allday use account. They should be also automounting when i login to this account. But i've also set Guest account for guests. For Guest account, i want make VM partition fully disabled and invisible (and thus it mustn't automount) but DOWNLOADS partition should be shared with limited privileges with Guest account. Editing fstab i'm able to share DOWNLOADS partition with Guest on limited privileges but VM can be only set to limited and have disabled automounting - so guest can't mount it but it still can be seen in Nautilus, plus I must always mount it manually when i login to allday account. Is there some trick to make what i want? But when ever the user tries to access or open the 'Volumes'(Drives where movies, songs and other files are stored) it asks for the Administrator's password. • DDD: service contains two repository

  Does it correct way to have two repository inside one service and will it be an application or domain service? Suppose I have a Passenger object that should contains Passport (government id) object. I am getting Passenger from PassengerRepository. PassengerRepository create request to server and obtain data (json) than parse received data and store inside repository. I have confused because I want to store Passport as Entity and put it to PassportRepository but all information about password contains inside json than i received above. I guess that I should create a PassengerService that will be include PassengerRepository and PassportRepository with several methods like removePassport, addPassport, getAllPassenger and etc. UPDATE: So I guess that the better way is represent Passport as VO and store all passports inside Passenger aggregate. However there is another question: Where I should put the methods (methods calls server api) for management passenger's passport. I think the better place is so within Passenger aggregate.

• Can I recreate main user account and delete old?

  Something happen with performance of super user account. When I tried to load home folder it has really looooong booting duration. If compare to earlier time. And I couldn't figure out why this happen and what is wrong. It has been started after I copied a lot of contents from external usb disk. • I deleted all files and folders (including hidden) from /home/username/ now in big trouble

  I am logged into a remote ubuntu server, and I accidentally erased the entire /home/username/ directory for the current user. The only thing left is a hidden directory called .gvfs. I don't need anything of the Documents/Music/etc. Now it is not letting me cd into the /var/www/ directory, which has permissions 666 and it is owned by the current user. I am afraid to disconnect from my ssh session because I don't know if I will be able to get back on. Have I permanently created a problem? Is there a way I can replace the most important files to the /home/username/ directory? Thanks! ** EDIT ** Thanks everyone for the help. I figured the problem with cd into the /var/www/ was actually my permissions in the /var/www/ directory. It was set to 666, changed it to 755 and everything was good again. It doesn't look like anything systematic was ruined by deleting the contents of the user folder.
