  A lot of you know me as an Application Lifecycle Management MVP, and a huge proponent of ALM, TFS, and Visual Studio.  For my day job, however, I work for Infront Consulting Group, a System Center consulting and training organization.  I love what I do there, and work closely with Operations Manager, Service Manager, and Orchestrator.  And believe it or not, use a lot of ALM best practices around all of those. Infront was just recognized as a 2012 Microsoft Corporate Account Virtualization Data Center Services Partner of the Year.  This award recognizes a solution partner that has demonstrated leadership and commitment in driving Microsoft virtualization solutions in the Microsoft Corporate Account segment.  I’m very proud of Infront, and all the hard work that everyone here has put into the incredible services we provide, which lead to us winning this award.

• How to deal with project managers who micromanage?

  Perhaps I'm just naive, but when I try to decipher the wall of tasks I'm targeted to do over the course of a week, I just can't help but think whoever builds the project schedule needs to get some remedial training on basic project management. For example, I am assigned 13 tasks today, the shortest lasting .13 days (default time metric in Microsoft Project), and the longest lasting .75 days. I can't help but think that it is blatant micromanagement scheduling projects in sub 10 minute intervals. The effects of management are becoming evident in slipped tasks, resource assignment exceeding capacity by a factor of two at some points in time, and spending more time clearing tasks and figuring out what comes next than actually doing work. How can I convince the project manager to create tasks with larger duration and to see the larger picture?

You might think that this is something usually uncommon for a company and you would be right. However, Oracle’s main value being innovation, we came up with a new project for Romanian students and graduates. We organised Oracle Summer School , offering them the opportunity to develop their soft skills and gain valuable business knowledge and exposure. How was Oracle Summer School programme organised? We focused on students and graduates’ needs and combined business experience with training and practice. The twenty four participants had different backgrounds, being interested in Software, Hardware, Finance, Marketing or other areas. The programme fulfilled each of these needs, bringing them in contact with Specialists and Managers. The first two weeks were dedicated to the company visits, business presentations and networking. The participants got an insight about employees’ activities and projects. Storytelling was also part of the program and people from different departments spent a couple of hours with the participants, sharing their experiences, knowledge and interesting stories. The Recruitment team delivered a training about the job interview skills in order to make the participants feel better prepared for a Recruitment process. The second module consisted of two weeks of Soft Skills trainings delivered by professional trainers from different departments. The participants gained useful insight on the competencies required within a business environment. The evenings were dedicated to social activities and it not very long until they started feel part of a team. The third module will take place at the end of September and will put the participants in contact with senior people from the business who will become their Mentors.   SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Microsoft launched SharePoint 2013 with great fanfare. But what stuck out was the introductory blog post by Corporate SVP of SharePoint, Jeff Teper. You can read the blogpost titled “The New SharePoint”. But one paragraph has stuck out, “Use SharePoint as an out-of-box application whenever possible - We designed the new SharePoint UI to be clean, simple and fast and work great out-of-box. We encourage you not to modify it which could add complexity, performance and upgradeability and to focus your energy on working with users and groups to understand how to use SharePoint to improve productivity and collaboration and identifying and promoting best practices in your organization.” The keywords here is “whenever possible”. The reality is, frequently it is not possible to not customize SharePoint in order to meet the customer requirements. But you must try and minimize SharePoint customization. • Web.NET is Closing Fast

  Code Retreat is an all-day training event that focuses on the fundamentals of software development. There's a "global" code retreat day coming up, and I'm looking forward to it. That said, I've been to one before and have to say there was a huge amount of chaos... which is fine. One thing that I still don't get is why the "Game of Life" is a good problem for TDD, and what good and bad TDD for it feels like. Realize this is a pretty open ended question, so feel free to comment.

• Suggestions required to build an ECommerce Platform

  For a prospective client we have to offer a solution to provide following system: CMS Order Management Shopping Cart CRM Helpdesk Accounting & Finance Custom Functions In order to save time and to avoid reinvent the wheel our idea is to integrate different off-the-shelf solutions. Their first requirement is that the system has to be hosted in their country which I think will exclude application like Aplicor, Netsuite & Salesforce. Basically the nucleaus would be the CMS which would integrate all the other apps. PHP or .Net based solutions would be our preferences as have inhouse expertise. So far following are few combinations I have come up with: Joomla (CMS) + Virtuemart (Cart+Ordering) + Sugar CRM + Open ERP (finance) + OTRS Magento (CMS+Cart+Ordering) + Sugar CRM + Open ERP (finance) + Helpdesk Ultimate Drupal (CMS) + Ubercart (Cart+Ordering) + Sugar CRM + Open ERP (finance) + Support Ticketing System Sharepoint (CMS) + OptimusBt (Cart+Ordering) + Dynamics CRM + Great Plains + SharepointHQ Dotnetnuke (CMS) + DNNSpot (Cart+Ordering) + Sigma Pro (CRM+Helpdesk) + Open ERP For Helpdesk I liked Zendesk but the server location was the stopping factor, similar for finance and CRM I liked Aplicor. I would not like to go into detailed requirements as it would make things very complex. Could you please suggest me which options are worth enough to start looking into? What other options we have?

• What are the basic skills a beginner JavaScript programmer should have?

  In NYC, we are working on creating a collaborative community programming environment and trying to segment out software engineers into differing buckets. At present, we are trying to define: Beginners Intermediates Advanced Experts (and/or Masters) Similar to an apprenticeship, you would need to demonstrate specific skills to achieve different levels. Right now, we have identified beginner programming skills as: Object - method, attributes, inheritance Variable - math, string, array, boolean - all are objects Basic arithmetic functions - precedence of functions String manipulation Looping - flow control Conditionals - boolean algebra This is a first attempt, and it is a challenge since we know the natural tension between programming and software engineering. How would you create such a skills-based ranking for JavaScript in this manner? For example, what would be the beginner JavaScript skills that you would need to have to advance to the intermediate training? And so on.

• Welcome to my first official full time employee!

  The last few months have been pretty manic and Vizioz has been growing successfully into a fully fledged development agency. I have been working with a couple of excellent off shore developers who I would like to publicly thank for all their hard work over the last couple of months!This week has been the start of a new era for Vizioz, I have taken on my first full time developer who is now based in our office in Reading, welcome to Colin. Which means we now have 3 Umbraco developers! Currently one with Level 2 qualification (me) but if business keeps growing I'll be sending the others for training shortly so hopefully by the end of the summer we'll be a certified solution provider.We have lots of plans for the next 6 months, so it should be exciting times, subscribe to my RSS feed to come along for the ride :)

Create a console app Add reference to Microsoft.SharePoint.dll Hit F5, curse because I forgot to set the framework to .NET 3.5 Right click properties, change framework to .NET 3.5 Hit F5, curse again because I get a FileNotFoundException, because I forgot to make it a x64 app. Finally on my way, 2 minutes later – which has added to atleast 2 hours over the last year.   Well, no more! • SharePoint and Visual Studio - Replaceable parameters

  SharePoint 2010 Training: more information What is a replaceable parameter? Sometimes you may see something like $SharePoint.Project.AssemblyFullName$ in your code. Visual studio is doing some magic to replace it during compile/build time with the full assembly signature. The following apply to these tokens or replaceable parameters - Tokens can be specified anywhere in a line. Tokens cannot span multiple lines. The same token may be specified multiple times on the same line and in the same file. Different tokens may be specified on the same line. Tokens that do not follow these rules are ignored without providing a warning or error. The replacement of tokens by string values is done immediately after manifest transformation, thus allowing manifest templates edited by a user to use tokens.
