Fast Society was originally an iPhone only application and has recently updated to include and Android app too. I must have got one of the first downloads of the Developer Edition and it was nice and fast. I've just downloaded Standard Edition and it's still nearly as fast. Nice. I'm guessing they aren't using GUIDs for the clustered indexes this time! ;)

  • New R Interface to Oracle Data Mining Available for Download

      The R Interface to Oracle Data Mining ( R-ODM) allows R users to access the power of Oracle Data Mining's in-database functions using the familiar R syntax. R-ODM provides a powerful environment for prototyping data analysis and data mining methodologies. R-ODM is especially useful for: Quick prototyping of vertical or domain-based applications where the Oracle Database supports the application Scripting of "production" data mining methodologies Customizing graphics of ODM data mining results (examples: classification, regression, anomaly detection) The R-ODM interface allows R users to mine data using Oracle Data Mining from the R programming environment. It consists of a set of function wrappers written in source R language that pass data and parameters from the R environment to the Oracle RDBMS enterprise edition as standard user PL/SQL queries via an ODBC interface. The R-ODM interface code is a thin layer of logic and SQL that calls through an ODBC interface. R-ODM does not use or expose any Oracle product code as it is completely an external interface and not part of any Oracle product. R-ODM is similar to the example scripts (e.g., the PL/SQL demo code) that illustrates the use of Oracle Data Mining, for example, how to create Data Mining models, pass arguments, retrieve results etc. R-ODM is packaged as a standard R source package and is distributed freely as part of the R environment's Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN). For information about the R environment, R packages and CRAN, see www.r-project.org. R-ODM is particularly intended for data analysts and statisticians familiar with R but not necessarily familiar with the Oracle database environment or PL/SQL. It is a convenient environment to rapidly experiment and prototype Data Mining models and applications. Data Mining models prototyped in the R environment can easily be deployed in their final form in the database environment, just like any other standard Oracle Data Mining model. What is R? R is a system for statistical computation and graphics. It consists of a language plus a run-time environment with graphics, a debugger, access to certain system functions, and the ability to run programs stored in script files. The design of R has been heavily influenced by two existing languages: Becker, Chambers & Wilks' S and Sussman's Scheme. Whereas the resulting language is very similar in appearance to S, the underlying implementation and semantics are derived from Scheme. R was initially written by Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman at the Department of Statistics of the University of Auckland in Auckland, New Zealand. Since mid-1997 there has been a core group (the "R Core Team") who can modify the R source code archive. Besides this core group many R users have contributed application code as represented in the near 1,500 publicly-available packages in the CRAN archive (which has shown exponential growth since 2001; R News Volume 8/2, October 2008). Today the R community is a vibrant and growing group of dozens of thousands of users worldwide.     I have the dreamspark MS license. However, everytime I have to install Windows on my PC, I get many updates and this process is long and boring. Is there any way to download the lastest Windows ISO with updates? I'm trying to install Windows 7 (but Windows 8 would also be helpful). Note: I don't want just download windows. I want to download the OS with the lastest updates, those that are downloaded with Windows update after installing it!! Thanks!

Big Data is my new interest and I have been exploring it recently. During this weekend this blog post caught my attention and I enjoyed reading it. Big Data is the next big thing. The growth is predicted to be 60% per year till 2016. There is no single solution to the growing need of the big data available in the market right now as well there is no one solution in the business intelligence eco-system available as well. However, the need of the solution is ever increasing. I am personally Klout user. You can see my Klout profile over. I do understand what Klout is trying to achieve – a single place to measure the influence of the person. However, it works a bit mysteriously. There are plenty of social media available currently in the internet world. The biggest problem all the social media faces is that everybody opens an account but hardly people logs back in. To overcome this issue and have returned visitors Klout has come up with the system where visitors can give 5/10 K+ to other users in a particular area. Looking at all the activities Klout is doing it is indeed big consumer of the Big Data as well it is early adopter of the big data and Hadoop based system.  Klout has to 1 trillion rows of data to be analyzed as well have nearly thousand terabyte warehouse. Hive the language used for Big Data supports Ad-Hoc Queries using HiveQL there are always better solutions. The alternate solution would be using SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) along with HiveQL. As there is no direct method to achieve there are few common workarounds already in place. A new ODBC driver from Klout has broken through the limitation and SQL Server Relation Engine can be used as an intermediate stage before SSAS. In this white paper the same solutions have been discussed in the depth. The white paper discusses following important concepts.   • Quickly compute added and removed lines

    I'm trying to compare two text files. I want to compute how many lines were added and removed. Basically what git diff --stat is doing. Bonus points for not having to store the entire file contents in memory. The approach I'm currently having in mind is: read each line of the old file compute a hash (probably MD5 or SHA-1) for each line store the hashes in a set do the same for each line in the new file every hash from the old file set that's missing in the new file set was removed every hash from the new file set that's missing in the old file set was added I'll probably want to exclude empty and all white space lines. There is a small issue with duplicated lines. This can either be solved by additionally storing how often a hash appears or comparing the number of lines in the old and new file and adjust either the added or removed lines so that the numbers add up. Do you see room for improvements or a better approach?

  • Redirecting to a diferent exe for download based on user agent

    I own a Linux-Apache site where I host exe files for download. Now, when a user clicks this link to my site (published on another site): http://mysite.com/downloads/file.exe I need to dynamically check their user agent and redirect them to either http://mysite.com/downloads/file-1.exe or http://mysite.com/downloads/file-2.exe It seems to me that I have to options: Put a .htaccess file stating that .exe files should be considered to be scripts. Then write a script that checks the user agent and redirects to a real exe placed in another folder. Call this script file.exe. Use Apache mod-rewrite to point file.exe to redirect.php. Which of these is better? Any other considerations? Thanks.

    for a long time I dream to have a songs lastfm tags in my music library, so I can use them to quickly generate playlists. There used to be a way to do that in amarok 1.4, but it never was stable. Than there is MusicBrainz Picard's lastfm/lastfmplus plugin. It is partially fine, but I cannot manage to make it look ONLY for the lastfm tags and put them into comments/genre/whatever but it always hast to tag everything. And it isn't particularly good with it, especially with small bands, songs without album etc. My music library is rather well organised. Most of the tags are correct. I also have quite some songs without an album. And I don't want it to find the albums for those songs, since it'd mess up my album view. So it must not touch the fields track name, track number, artist and album. All I want is that the most popular lastfm tags get into the genre or comments tag of the mp3, separated by semicolons, commas or whatever. I think I remember a script that did this job, but I cannot find. Does anybody know if there is anything like this? Would it be to hard to write this, for example as Banshee plugin? Thank you
