• Is giving read permissions on /etc/shadow to apache user a wise decision from security point of view?

  I have to use PAM authentication for DAV SVN, but when everything is configured as specified in mod_auth_pam documentation, authentication does not work. After some research I realized, that for this to work, httpd should be running under root user (which I don't like and won't implement) or apache user (under which httpd is running by default) should have permissions to read /etc/shadow file. So there is a pair of questions connected to each other which I want to ask: Is giving this permition to apache user a wise decision from security point of view? If answer to the first question is "yes", what is the correct way to do so? For now I've done following: groupadd shadow usermod -G shadow apache chmod g+r /etc/shadow Another way I can come up with is using acl: setfacl -m u:apache:r /etc/shadow Note: OS is Fedora 14 x86_64 (kernel: 2.6.35.11) httpd v2.2.17 mod_auth_pam v1.1.1

  I want implement a LAMP Server (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) without a single failure point and with Global Server Load Balancing. I have a server in Cali, Colombia, and other server will be installed in Melbourne, Australia, user in America can use the Cali Server and in Europe, Asia, Africa or Oceania use the Melbourne Server. If any server fail (or load is excessively high), a server must answer all request. Data in MYSQL must be in sync, php files, any configuration in both server must be in sync. I read about of Google DNS Server 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and ANY Cast, also about MySQL semisynchronous replication and MySQL Cluster, but what about other things, as crontabs, and the configurations in server? The solution can't depend of APNIC or BGP, only open source software running in Linux.

• Is there a "restore point" in Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) like Windows?

  I'm working directly in an Ubuntu Virtual Machine (VM). Some updates (like kernel) were available at the update manager. If I weren't using a VM, I wouldn't update it since it's a risk to break something. Since it's a VM, you can create a Snapshot or export an appliance and restore if something goes wrong. Suppose I'm not using a VM with a Debian/Ubuntu installation. Is there a install-restore approach that doesn't depend in a VM configuration to restore your system exactly before an upgrade (Like a "Restore Point" in Windows), being easy to restore like a VM appliance? (I'm not looking for "ghost images" or something like that (Norton Ghost, Clonezilla, etc), I'm looking for something builtin in the Linux System)

• How can I pin point a USB file transfer bottleneck in Unix?

  I'm experiencing very slow data transfer speeds over USB 2.0 on my nix box and was wondering how I can pin-point the cause of the problem. I've looked into iotop and top but the cpu and mem figures look normal (compared to guides I have checked). The box which is affected is Ubuntu 12.04 32bit Server running on an Asus EEE 701 2G model and I am transferring from the OS over USB 2.0 to an external HDD (which transfers at 30MB/s+ on Windows 7 on other machine). I get rsync write speeds of 1MB/s from OS to USB HDD which seems ridiculously slow. These speeds are consistent with other USB HDDs and sticks.

• How can I get Google to re-point its search entries to new domain?

  My main .com domain registration lapsed and when I went to re-register it, I found that a domain reseller service squatted it and I've lost access to it. As I wasn't terribly keen on spending money on funding scammers and the like, I registered a .co.uk domain under the same name. Is there any way of getting Google to re-point all its indexed links to the new domain? It's been indexing my blog for a couple years now and while it's not too big a deal, I'd like to not have to start all over again. Also, searching for my site results in an old entry which is currently pointing at a "Apply for a Tax Break NOW!!!" page.

  I usually ask my n00b questions on Stack Exchange, but now I'm setting up a VPS and have a question. My usual site.com points to my VPS's IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Now I have a different domain, and I'd like to point that to another location, say xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/myname. However, when I try to add that as an "A" record in the DNS settings it won't let me. FYI I'm using chicagovps.net with ubuntu 11.10 and Nginx. Thanks!

  I am new to Ubuntu so please be gentle! I am taking the plunge from Windows!! I connected to a Windows share (using Connect to Server... menu) and I can access it on Gnome just fine. However, I don't know how I can access it in console, or in any other program that requires the path, when it's already connected on Gnome. What's the mount point for that? I tried the mount command but it does not show up.

• How to convert a power point pdf to a pdf that is easy to read on kindle?

  I have several power point presentations as pdfs. I would like to read them on the original kindle in landscape format. When I read the original on the kindle then a single slide won't fit on the kindles display. I thought the easiest way to convert the pdf was to repring it with a pdf printer. However I don't know the paper size to use. I already tried using Calibre as suggested by this question. However the output is not usable because of formatting issues. So what paper size should I use for the pdf printer to reprint them in landscape format or are there any other tools I could use for that task?

  I am wondering what is the best way to handle the situation of marking a bug as resolved and providing a version of component/product in which this fix can be found. Context For a project I am working on, we are using Bugzilla for issue tracking, and we have the following: A product "A" with a version number like vA.B.C.D, This product "A" have the following components: Component "C1" with a version number like vA.B.C.D, Component "C2" with a version number like vA.B.C.D, Component "C3" with a version number like vA.B.C.D. Internally we keep track of which component versions have been used to generate the product A version vA.B.C.D. Example: Product "A" version v1.0.0.0 has been produced from component "C1" v1.0.0.3, component "C2" v1.3.0.0 and component "C3" v2.1.3.5. And Product "A" version v1.0.1.0 has been produced from component "C1" v1.0.0.4, component "C2" v1.3.0.0 and component "C3" v2.1.3.5. Each component is a SVN repository. The person in charge of generating the product "A" have only access to the different components tags folder in SVN, and not the trunk of each component repository. Problem Now the problem is the following, when a bug is found in the product "A", and that the bug is related to Component "C1", the version of product "A" is chosen (e.g. v1.0.0.0), and this version allow the developer to know which version of component "C1" has the bug (here it will be v1.0.0.3). A bug report is created. Now let's say that the developer responsible for component "C1" corrects the bug, then when the bug seems to be fixed and after some test and validation, the developer generates a new tag for component "C1", with the version v1.0.0.4. At this time, the developer of component "C1" needs to update the bug report, but what is the best to do: Mark the bug as resolved/fixed and add a comment saying "This bug has been fixed in the tags v1.0.0.4 of C1 component" ? Keep the bug as assigned, add a comment saying "This bug has been fixed in the tags v1.0.0.4 of C1 component, update this bug status to resolved for the next version of the product that will be generated with the newest version (v1.0.0.4 of C1)" ? Another possible way to deal with this problem. Right now the problem is that when a product component CX is fixed, it is not sure in which future version of the product A it will be included, so it is for me not possible to say in which version of the product it will be solved, but it is possible to say in which version of the Component CX it has been solved. So when do we need to mark a bug as solved, when the product A version include the fixed version of CX, or only when CX component has been fixed ? • iOS6 MKMapView using a ton of memory, to the point of crashing the app, anyone else notice this?

  Has anyone else, who's using maps in their iOS 6 apps, noticing extremely high memory use to the point of receiving memory warnings over and over to the point of crashing the app? I've ran the app through instruments and I'm not seeing any leaks and until the map view is created the app consistently runs at around ~3mb Live Bytes. Once the map is created and the tiles are downloaded the Live Bytes jumps up to ~13mb Live Bytes. Then as I move the map around and zoom in and out the Live Bytes continuos to climb until the app crashes at around ~40mb Live Bytes. This is on an iPhone 4 by the way. On an iPod touch it crashes even earlier. I am reusing annotation views properly and nothing is leaking. Is anyone else seeing this same high memory usage with the new iOS 6 maps? Also, does anyone have a solution?

  I have a programming problem =) std::vector<char*> Names; if(MyPacket.ID == 3) {Names.push_back(MyPacket.Buffer);} I push the recieved buffer onto a vector like so, but when the buffer changes so does the value of the variable at that point in the vector. So say I sent and pushed a buffer containing 'Simon' onto the vector that would be fine so at point [0] on the vector would be the word Simon. but then when I recieve a new buffer it overwrites position [0] even though the packets ID is different, a breakpoint within the if statement is not reached with this new buffer. I really hope i'm explaining this well enough, I tried asking a friends advice and he pointed me towards this site. Any help appreciated David Andrews

  I'm working with a double click function in c#. the function takes an object and EventArgs as it's parameters: private void gvHL7_DoubleClick(object sender, EventArgs e){ . . . } However, I want to use the .Point property, and EventArgs doesn't have that property. I know that DevExpress.XtraGrid.Views.Grid.GridMenuEventArgs does, but it's saying that's an invalid casting. What type should I cast my EventArgs instance to if I wish to access the .Point property? Edit: The double click function I'm working with is provided by devexpress for their grids.

  Hi everyone, I just want to use Collections.sort or Arrays.sort to sort a list of points (class Point) by x first and then by y. I have a class Ponto that implements Comparable like this: public int compareTo(Ponto obj) { Ponto tmp = obj; if (this.x < tmp.x) { return -1; } else if (this.x > tmp.x) { return 1; } return 0; } but now I want to sort by y too after x. How can I do that by modifying the above code? Or is that a better and "clean" way to do this? I also use to pass this code to C++, in which I've created a structure called Point with a equivalent comparable method.

  In this SO question, someone asked for calculating an angle from three points. I need to do the opposite thing. I want to draw a clock, and I have tiny tick images. An art dude made 60 of them, each with an individual and accurate shadow. So there are 60 distinct images at 10x10 points in size, already correctly rotated in the center of that square. So every 6 degrees one tick image has to be placed. I would just need to calculate the x/y coordinate based on a center point, an radius and an angle. So I have: an center point an radius an angle Is there an easy way to calculate the x/y coordinate with this? Maybe cocoa-touch already has a useful function or method for this?

I mean, not the center point, but the little curve (arc) which is made up between the angles 20-150 degrees. I looked into quartz but unfortunately, there seems no helper function to calculate this. • Can I modify an ASP.NET AJAX History Point?

  I'm using ASP.NET 3.5 with AJAX and have enabled history on the Script Manager. I have 2 pages, Default.aspx and Default2.aspx. I'm using the AJAX History on the Default.aspx page and saving history points on the server-side. There are some dropdowns on Default.aspx that I don't want to save a history point for each change but would like to save the latest state so that when I click on a link on Default.aspx that navigates to Default2.aspx, when I click the back button on Default2.aspx to return I want the dropdowns to reflect what they were prior to clicking on the hyperlink. So what I'd like to do is modify the history point that I originally set on one of my ajax async postbacks on the client-side before the page navigates away to Default2.aspx. There is a location.hash javascript property that looks like it may do what I want but when I modify the value the Script Manager Navigate event is firing. Is there a way to prevent this event from firing? And would this then do the job?

• How do I point a domain name to a Django url?

  I have a subdomain m.example.com that I want to point to the same location as example.com/mobile running on an apache2/django1.3 installation. example.com is the landing page, and I have the urls.py configured such that urls that match /^mobile$/ will be served the mobile version of the page. I looked into <VirtualHost>, but I think it requires a physical location for me to point m.example.com at and with the django urls there is no physical location except for the root of the project directory. I am unsure if the configuration change is made on the apache side or the django side. I've also looked into the mod_rewrite module for Apache, but I would prefer if I didnt have to redirect m.example.com to example.com/mobile

I've installed the WAIK, and I have my Windows 7 sources mounted as a virtual drive.
