• GNOME changes to KDE on Maverick

  Hi, I recently made a clean/fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 an experienced the problem that the theme changes from Gnome to KDE and back randomly and partly. Sometimes after starting my computer I will have a KDE theme. If I then open the Appearance Preferences ( System - Preferences - Appearance ) some applications and the main-menu as well as menu of applications (only upper two centimetres of a application window) will change back to Gnome only by opening it, not changing anything nor saving. I did not choose KDE at any time, nor did I do any changes to the appearance prior to the first occurrence of this bug. On a second computer I updated from 10.04 to 10.10 and experienced the same bug. On this computer I did however change the layout of the minimize;maximise;close buttons by following How do I move the Window buttons from left to right?. But I don't see how this could provoke the bug, especially as it occurs on a second computer. Will doing updates I saw that there a quite a lot of KDE packages being downloaded. Do I even need those if I don't want to use KDE?

This release contains mostly bug fixes reported by library users. I am glad to see that Open Source model works and people try to contribute to the project! Thank you everybody for your bug repots and help with the project. Version 0.4.0 Added support for ASP.NET MVC 5 Removed jQuery dependency. I have not tested it on IE8 or earlier versions. Any help with testing is welcome! Fixed problem with SSRS keep-alive cookies. Keep-alive cookies are issued every time a report is opened during a browser session. Many people don't restart their browsers and in my case, Chrome doesn't get rid of the cookie session data on close - had to manually delete them for the reports to start working again. I added KeepSessionAlive control settings to manage SSRS keep-alive behavior. It is set to false by default to fix Bad Request 400: Request Too Long issue. You can find usage example in Fluent.cshtml. Fixed the bug when ReportViewer Control parameters was not parsed when ShowParameterPrompts parameter had not been set. Changed public static MvcReportViewerIframe MvcReportViewer method to use IEnumerable<KeyValuePair<string, object>> reportParameters instead of simple object. The reason is users reported that they mostly use multiple report parameters’ values. Added support for SSRS hosted on Windows Azure. Users should set MvcReportViewer.IsAzureSSRS property to true in Web.config to use Windows Azure authentication. I do not have Windows Azure SSRS and build the code using http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg552871.aspx#Authentication article. It would be nice if somebody from community tested the change or provided me a test report on Windows Azure for testing purposes.

• javaws crashes, error in ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit client as Dom0 and Xen. I am having problems getting java up and running. Java itself seems to work fine, however I get strange errors, for example when I start javaws. I tried different versions and always get the same errors. I tried openjdk 1.6 and 1.7 as well as sunjava6 and 7. I alway get an error in the same lib All other applications are working fine, so it seems ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 is working fine. Any hints what could be wrong? • Keep getting smbd errors, but apport asks questions I can't answer

  What I want to know below is where to bug report the poor series of questions I'm being asked... Every time I reboot (at least), I get a crash dialog ("Sorry, Ubuntu 12.04 has experienced an internal error"). Clicking on show details shows the problem is with smbd, but the rest of the trace does not appear. When I wish to continue to send a bug report, I am told I will be asked a series of questions in a window titled "Apport". The first question asks: How would you best describe your setup? -I am running a Windows File Server -I am connecting to a Windows File Server. Since I am doing both, I have no idea which to choose. In any case, selecting one leads to the next question: Did this used to work properly with a previous release? -No -Yes But I never tried to use Samba in a previous release, so I can't seriously answer this. After picking an option here, I get more questions in a similar vein. Surely there should be "I don't know/I haven't tried" options, even if they simply mean you can't submit a useful bug report.

  I post here because I am using Ubuntu but this is probably an hardware problem. Since I bought my new setup with AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 635 Processor and asus m4a89td pro/usb3 motherboard with ecc ram I have stuttering on videos. I was using ubuntu 11.10 now ubuntu 12.10. • Pandaboard crash on startup or freeze after minutes

  I just received my Pandaboard ES (rev B) and I am having trouble after installing ubuntu-omap4-addons. Once I copied the image ubuntu-12.04-preinstalled-desktop-armhf+omap4.img on my sd card and boot the pandaboard with it, I run the following commands: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiomap-dev/release sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get install ubuntu-omap4-extras At the end of the installation of ubuntu-omap4-extras, Ubuntu tells me that a problem occurs when the console displays: ldconfig deferred processing now taking place Clicking on "report the problem" tell me that the problem concerns pvr-omap4-dkms. I read somewhere that this can happen and it is better to reinstall pvr-omap4-dkms. Which I am doing by running: sudo apt-get install --reinstall pvr-omap4-dkms I reboot. Then the board has sometimes difficulties to start Ubuntu: it freezes during the loading page, only action I can do is unplugging the board to start it again. Some other times, Ubuntu load successfully but then freeze at another random time, in the range 20 - 40 minutes. I searched on internet for similar bug and found this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ti-omap4/+bug/971091 So I typed this in: update-rc.d ondemand disable apt-get -y install cpufrequtils echo 'ENABLE="true" GOVERNOR="performance" MAX_SPEED="0" MIN_SPEED="0"' > /etc/default/cpufrequtils cpufreq-set -r -g performance reboot But it doesn't seems to fix the bug. • I'm doing 90% maintenance and 10% development, is this normal?

  I have just recently started my career as a web developer for a medium sized company. As soon as I started I got the task of expanding an existing application (badly coded, developed by multiple programmers over the years, handles the same tasks in different ways, zero structure) So after I had successfully extended this application with the requested functionality, they gave me the task to fully maintain the application. This was of course not a problem, or so I thought. But then I got to hear I wasn't allowed to improve the existing code and to only focus on bug fixes when a bug gets reported. From then on I have had 3 more projects just like the above, that I now also have to maintain. And I got 4 projects where I was allowed to create the application from scratch, and I have to maintain those as well. At this moment I'm slightly beginning to get crazy from the daily mails of users (read managers) for each application I have to maintain. They expect me to handle these mails directly while also working on 2 other new projects (and there are already 5 more projects lined up after those). The sad thing is I have yet to receive a bug report on anything that I have coded myself, for that I have only received the occasional lets do things 180 degrees different change requests. Anyway, is this normal? In my opinion I'm doing the work equivalent of a whole team of developers. Was I an idiot when I initially expected things to be different? I guess this post has turned into a big rant, but please tell me that this is not the same for every developer. P.S. My salary is almost equal if not lower then that of a cashier at a supermarket.

• xubuntu 12.04 screen regularly stops refreshing, refreshing resumes after un-/re-maximizing a window

  My screen frequently stops completely refreshing. I can make it resume refreshing by un-maximizing/re-maximize a window or by switching workspace (the un-/re-maximizing works every time. Switching workspace sometimes has to be done a couple of times). The immediate impression is that the system is frozen: there is apparently no reaction to anything I do but interestingly window title bar will change, if I switch application with (i.e alt+tab or browse through folders) I saw an identical issue in ubuntu 10.04, though a lot less frequent, I never saw this in ubuntu 12.04 (which I have been using the last 4-5 months). After switching to Xubuntu I'm seeing this again and more frequently. The specific reason I'm not sure this is a bug: I installed gnome-control-center which dragged in tons of packages. This was while trying to fix dual-screen setup. I believe the issue surfaced after this. I later meticulously removed every package from this batch (purge) in the hope that every setting would also be removed. But the issue has persisted. Another issue happened at the same time, it may be totally unrelated but it feels as if it is the same basic issue: the screen resolution of the greeter became less than the expected 1680x1050 and often after login there's just a blank and totally unresponsive wallpaper without panel so I have to force reboot. When the login is successful it's very clear that it works hard to determine the correct resolution which is achieved after a few blink to black screens. My questions: 1) Is this a settings issue or a bug? 2) How do I begin to research the issue - could I perhaps some way reset xubuntu/xfce to default. 3) If this is a bug where would be the most appropriate place report this? • How to make the internal subwoofer work on an Asus G73JW?

  I have an Asus G73JW laptop which has an internal subwoofer built-in. Currently, the system detects the internal speakers as a 2.0 system (or I can change do 4.0 is the only other option). I found a bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/673051 which discusses the bug and according to them a fix was sent upstream back at the end of 2010. I would have thought this would have made it into 12.04 but I guess not? • How to enable logging for Google Chrome in Ubuntu 12.04?

  I'm trying to capture the logs for a certain bug I'm having with Google Chrome. However, I can't find/enable logs for GC. According to this Chromium project page, I just need to add the flags --enable-logging --v=1 and a chrome_debug.log file will appear in my user data directory. However, after running GC (and closing through the 'X' title bar button) there is no chrome_debug.log file in the specified directory. I even tried running as root as it may have something to do with write permissions but GC refuses to start as root. Another thing, GC also prints messages when invoked from command line. I tried capturing this and redirecting them to a file via $ google-chrome > today.log but the messages are still printed in the command line and the file I specify gets created but remains empty. Note that I can't just copy-paste the messages printed on terminal after my bug occurs as the bug freezes up my whole system that, when it occurs, my only option is to turn off my computer straight via the power button. I've seen a few similar bugs already posted but I find that they don't exactly describe my situation so I'd really like to get some logs for this. So how do I enable logging or, at least, get those terminal messages in a file?

Firefox already have a great list of plugins or addons to make experience better with Web but IE9 have nothing. this means IE9 not for user and other like chrome and firefox give you much better experience then IE. next thing after user is developer. first thing is that all developer want smooth development who save their time not take too perhaps saving.posts on IE9 show that a list of thing improved in IE 9 developer tool but are one developer tool enough for web development so developer need more utilities to solve different different type of puzzle who IE 9 never give like in Firefox you have utilities to do a task even small or big one. in chrome same experience you have but IE9 never give any plugin or utilities to make our work faster even they are new headache for developer because IE not give update as soon as other because in Firefox and in chrome if a bug is reported then they solve them fast and distribute them in next version of software very soon but in IE wait for a long time like IE 9 and IE 8 have no official release between them as update. • Types of semantic bugs, logic errors [closed]

  I am a PhD student and currently focus on automatically finding instances of new types of bugs in (Java) programs that cannot be found by existing tools like FindBugs. The existing tool currently is used to prove/disprove termination of (Java) programs. I have some ideas (see below), but I could need more input from you (experienced programmers, potential users of my tool). What kind of bugs do you wish to find? What types of bugs exist and might be suitable for my analysis? One strength of the approach I use is detailled information about the heap. So in contrast to FindBugs, I can work with knowledge of the form "variable x and variable y are disjoint on the heap" or "variable z is not cyclic". It is also possible to see if a method might have side effects (and if so, which variables may/may not be affected by it). Example 1: Vacuous call: Graph graphOne = createGraph(); Graph graphTwo = createGraph(); Node source = graphTwo.getRootNode(); for (Node n : graphOne.getNodes()) { if (areConnected(source, n)) { graphTwo.addNode(n); } } Imagine createGraph() creates a fresh graph, so that graphOne and graphTwo are disjoint on the heap. Then, because source is taken from graphTwo instead of graphOne, the call to areConnected always returns false. In this situation I could find out that the call areConnected is useless (because it does not have any side effect and the return value always is false) which helps finding the real bug (taking source from the wrong graph). For this the information that x and y are disjoint (because graphOne and graphTwo are disjoint) is crucial. This bug is related to calling x.equals(y) where x and y are objects of different classes. In this scenario, most implementations of equals() always return false, which most likely is not the intended result. FindBugs already finds this bug (hardcoded to equals(), semantics of implementation is not checked). Example 2: Useless code: someCode(); while (something()) { yetMoreSomething(); } moreCode(); In the case that the loop (so the code in something() and yetMoreSomething()) does not modify anything visible outside the loop, it does not make sense to run this code - the program has the same behaviour as someCode(); moreCode() (i.e., without the loop). To find this out, one needs detailled information about the side effects of the (possibly useless) code. If I can prove that the code does not have any side effect that can be observed afterwards (in the example: in moreCode() or later), then the code indeed is useless. Of course, here Input/Output of any form must be seen as a side effect, so that a System.out.println(...) is not considered useless. Example 3: Ignored return value: Instead of x = foo(); and making use of x, the method is called without storing the result: foo();. If the method does not have any side effect, its invocation is useless and can be dropped. Most likely, the bug here is that the returned value should have been used. Here, too, detailled information about side effects are needed. Can you think of similar types of bugs that might be detected (only) with detailled information about the heap, side effects, semantics of called methods, ...? • What is the best practice, point of view of well experienced developers

  My manager pushes me to use his self defined best practices. All of these practices are based on is own assumptions. I disagree with them and I would like to have some feedback of well experienced people about these practices. I would prefer answers from people involved in the maintenance of huge products and people whom have maintained the product for years. Developers with 15+ years of experience are preferred because my manager has that much experience himself. I have 7 years of experience. Here are the practices he wants me to use: never extends classes, use composition and interface instead because extending classes are unmaintainable and difficult to debug. What I think about that Extend when needed, respect "Liskov's Substitution Principle" and you'll never be stuck with a problem, but prefer composition and decoration. I don't know any serious project which has banned inheriting, sometimes it's impossible to not use that, i.e. in a UI framework. Design patterns are just unusable. In PHP, for simple use cases (for example a user needs a web interface to view a database table), his "best practice" is: copy some random php code wich we own, paste and modify it, put html and php code in same file, never use classes in PHP, it doesn't work well for small jobs, and in fact it doesn't work well at all, there is no good tool to work with. Copy & paste PHP code is good practice for maintenance because scripts are independent, if you have a bug somewhere you can fix it without side effects. What I think about that: NEVER EVER COPY code or do it because you have five minutes to deliver something, you will do some refactoring after that. Copy & paste code is a beginners error, if you have errors you'll have the error everywhere any time you have pasted it's a nightmare to maintain. If you repsect the "Open Close Principle" you'll rarely get edge effects, use unit test if you are afraid of that. For small jobs in PHP use at least something you get or write the HTML separately from the PHP code and reuse it any time you need it. Classes in PHP are mature, not as mature as other languages like python or java, but they are usable. There is tools to work with classes in PHP like Zend Studio that work very well. The use of classes or not depends not on the language you use but the programming paradigm you have choosen. I'm a OOP developer, I use PHP5, why do I have to shoot myself in the foot? When you find a simple bug in the code, and you can fix it simply, if you are not working on the code where you have found it, never fix it, even if it takes 5 seconds. He says to me his "best practices" are driven by the fact that he has a lot of experience in maintaining software in production (14 years) and he now knows what works and what doesn't work, what the community says is a fad, and the people advocating such principles as never copy & paste code, are not evolved in maintaining applications. What I think about that: If you find a bug fix it if you can do it quickly inform the people who've touched that code before, check if you have not introduced a new bug, ideally add a unit test for it. I currently work on a web commerce project, which serves 15k unique users per day. The code base has to be maintained and has been maintained this way since 2005. Ideally you include a short description of your position and experience in terms of years effectively maintaining an application which has been in production for real.

• Ivar definitions show 'long' type encoding as 'long long' type encoding

  I've found what I think may be a bug with Ivar and Objective-C runtime. I'm using XCode 3.2.1 and associated libraries, developing a 64 bit app on X86_64 (MacBook Pro). Where I would expect the type encoding for the following "longVal" to be 'l', the Ivar encoding is showing a 'q' (which is a 'long long'). Anyone else seeing this?   We have a large WinForms app, and there is a built-in bug reporting system that can be activated during testing via the F5 Key. I am capturing the F5 key with .Net's PreFilterMessage system. This works fine on the main forms, modal dialog boxes, etc. Unfortunately, the program also displays windows messageboxes when it needs to. When there is a bug with that, e.g., wrong text in the messagebox or it shouldn't be there, the messagefilter isn't executed at all when the messagebox is up! I realize I could fix it by either rewriting my own messagebox routine, or kicking off a separate thread that polls GetAsyncKeyState and calls the error reporter from there. However I was hoping for a method that was less of a hack. • debugging scaffolding contingent upon degbugging boolean (java)

  Recently i've found myself writing a lot of methods with what i can only think to call debugging scaffolding. Here's an example: public static void printArray (String[] array, boolean bug) { for (int i = 0; i<array.lenght; i++) { if (bug) System.out.print (i) ; //this line is what i'm calling the debugging scaffolding i guess. System.out.println(array[i]) ; } } in this method if i set bug to true, wherever its being called from maybe by some kind of user imput, then i get the special debugging text to let me know what index the string being printed as at just in case i needed to know for the sake of my debugging (pretend a state of affairs exists where its helpful). All of my questions more or less boil down to the question: is this a good idea? but with a tad bit more objectivity: Is this an effective way to test my methods and debug them? i mean effective in terms of efficiency and not messing up my code. Is it acceptable to leave the if (bug) stuff ; code in place after i've got my method up and working? (if a definition of "acceptability" is needed to make this question objective then use "is not a matter of programing controversy such as ommiting brackets in an if(boolean) with only one line after it, though if you've got something better go ahead and use your definition i won't mind) Is there a more effective way to accomplish the gole of making debugging easier than what i'm doing? Anything you know i mean to ask but that i have forgotten too (as much information as makes sense is appreciated).
