  • How important is self-teaching in the programming field? [closed]

    I'm 16. I started programming about a year ago when I was about to start high-school. I'm going for a career in programming, and I'm doing my best to learn as much as I can. When I first started, I learned the basics of C++ from a book and I started to learn things by myself from there on. Nowadays I'm much more experienced than I was a year ago. I knew I had to study by myself because high-school won't (likely) teach me anything valuable about programming, and I want to be prepared. The question here is: how important is it to study programming by oneself?

    I am working as a coldfusion developer for 2 years. Currently, I quit my job and doing master degree in computer science. I want to learn a new language. Before I start my career, I have some experience in .Net Framework and C#.Net. During these days, I learned PHP and it's going well. Now, I am doing some university project with Java. What I am thinking is that should I learn Java? It's really difficult for me.to know libraries and especially, Object Oriented concepts. After my degree, I want to work as software engineer. What should I do? What might be the best choice for me? PHP? Java? .Net?

  • .NET - Where can I start? [closed]

    I'm a moderately experienced developer with experience developing using a variety of languages. I've done C++, Java, PHP, Javascript, and several other languages. I remember the Java dev stack being rather difficult to dive into, but it's nothing like the endless sea of the .NET framework. I'd like to become experienced in .NET development, as many dev shops are microsoft-centric. But I'm a little unsure as to where the best place to start is. As I already know a bunch of programming languages, I don't really need resources that will help me learn C# or any of the .NET languages as much as I need to learn the development stack, APIs, etc. Any suggestions on the best way to start learning .NET development?

  • C# .NET 4.0 interactive course?

    I would like to learn C# programming. I already studied it for several weeks and wrote some minor programs with VS2010, and I'm not completely newbie at programming because I worked on STALKER - Shadow of Chernobyl as scripter, but it was LUA. I want to become a real programmer. I think C# is a decent way to start with. I already learned about the most commonly used resource sites and got some nice eBooks as well, but unfortunately I don't have time to sit down in front my computer all the time, so my progress is pretty slow. I would like to ask that if someone can recommend me some decent interactive online courses to make my learning progress faster. I know about the "joe grip" course but I don't know if it's worth $39 also it's only for .NET 1.x and 2.0 while I'd like to learn 4.0 so I have no idea what should I do.

    I want to build and android app that visualize real time data , I set up a UDP channel that get the data , now I want to visualize it . I now that I can use openGL ES. but I have now back ground and in a few weeks I dont think that i'm able to learn that . what about android processing ? could it be used for extensive visualization task like this? or it's limited ? I heard it's not hard to learn that. any other option ?

  • Most regrettable design or programming decision you made? [closed]

    I would like to hear what kind of design decisions you took and how did they backfire. Because of a bad design decision, I ended up having to support that bad decision forever (I also had a part in it). This made me realize that one single design mistake can haunt you forever. I want to learn from the more experienced people what kind of blunders have they experienced and what did they learn from them. I'm sure this will be a lot of help to other programmers by helping them to not repeat those decisions. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  • Best JavaOne 2012 Session!

    Go here to watch a really cool BOF, which was run late at night at some stage during the past week's JavaOne 2012, and which I really enjoyed even though I was falling asleep due to jetlag. (I literally woke up a few times, which means I must have been sleeping.) I loved it even though it was on a topic that doesn't really interest me as such, I just happen to know the speaker.
