I would be fine with writing a batch file or a .net program to do it. • Windows XP: How to delete files that cannot be deleted?

  I have a backup copy of my previous Documents and Settings folder which only contains my original user and within that, 2 directories (Favorites and Local Settings) which are visible in cmd shell but when I try to delete them, Windows gives me this error: If I try to delete the Documents and Settings folder, I receive this warning: I tried doing this in a cmd shell: attrib *.* -r -a -s -h /s But it did not help, nor did it return any errors/warnings. Unlocker 1.8.5 returns: No Locking handle found. Any ideas?

• Windows Server 2003: Nat Port Forwarding Not Working

  The setup is following: Internet (108.99.XXX.XX) <- Windows Server 2003 (10.0.0.1) <- Switch <- Office Computers (10.0.0.100-200 some static routes some manual some automatic) Windows Server has NAT installed on it and two network interfaces are configured properly. The problem is, whenever I try to forward port 80 (or any other) from office computer (lets say 10.0.0.100), it fails. Nic #1 Settings: All settings are obtained from ISP Nic #2 Settings: Set manually IP: 10.0.0.1 Mask: 255.255.255.0 Nat Server is configured to automatically assign IP addresses to private network. Settings are: IP: 10.0.0.0 Mask: 255.255.255.0 Forwarding was done in Routing and Remote Access (local) - IP Routing - NAT/Basic Firewall - Local Area Connection (right click_properties) - services and ports - Web Server HTTP - Private Address: 10.0.0.100 SO what is causing the problem of failure to forward any port from other computer inside private network?

• Silent install of Japanese Language Pack in Win7

  Every year, due to re-imaging, I am forced to find a way to install the Japanese language pack on a collection of 30 computers. Each year I look for a way to automate this process, and each year I am forced to do this manually. Maybe this year will be different. Has anyone had any luck with installing and configuring far east language support for windows 7 without user interaction? I have already downloaded kb972813 and have a way to get it out to the computers. What I normally do is this: Run the EXE, use the default settings. Open up language settings and create the JP keyboard. Configure the language bar settings. Copy settings to default user. Delete the local user cache. Sign the different user accounts in to make sure that the default settings are correct. This whole process takes about 10 minutes, multiply that out by 30 machines and you are looking at a 5 hour process. If I can log into all of the computers at once, I can normally cut that down to about an hour. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

  For example what is the alternative to this command without quotation marks: CD "c:\Documents and Settings" The full reason I don't want to use quotation marks is that this command DOES work: SVN add mypathname\*.* but this command DOES NOT work : SVN add "mypathname\*.*" The problem being when I change mypathname for a path with spaces in it I need to quote the whole thing. For example: SVN add "c:\Documents and Settings\username\svn\*.*" But when I try this I get the following error message: svn: warning: 'c:\Documents and Settings\username\svn\*.*' not found

• Windows 8: Multiple monitors with varying DPI? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Dual monitors on Windows - How do I set a different DPI or text size on each monitor? I'm running Windows 8 on my Macbook Pro Retina (220dpi) which has an external 24" monitor (~96 dpi). In Mac OS 10.8.2, the display settings seem ok and I can actually use both displays without usability issues. I don't know what scaling settings etc it uses but it looks fine. On Windows 8, however when I boost the DPI settings to take advantage of the retina display, it blows up the display on the external monitor - text is giant sized. How can I tell Windows 8 to use the real DPI settings of each monitor? NOTE: I'm not asking for Windows 7.

• Gnome 3 application Icons disappeared

  I edited my main menu settings (unchecked items inside a sub menu) when it happened that the window freezed and all entries on the left side disappeared (Office, System, Settings, Games, ...). I didn't think much about it, but when I restarted my computer all application entries in my menu and my favorites (quickstart bar on the left side) where gone. When I go to activities - applications I just see the "All" entry without any items to click on. ~/.config/menu/gnome-applications.menu is an empty file and ~/.config/menu/gnome-settings.menu has the folowing content: <!DOCTYPE Menu PUBLIC '-//freedesktop//DTD Menu 1.0//EN' 'http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/menu-1.0.dtd'> <Menu> <Name>Desktop</Name> <MergeFile type="parent">/etc/xdg/menus/gnome-settings.menu</MergeFile> </Menu> I also looked into the files under /etc/xdg/menus. They look like template files without any reference to actual installed programs. I assume that due to a bug it deleted all my menu settings. Is there any way to restore at least the default menu? Or are there any other places to look for my old configuration?

• Formatting Dates, Times and Numbers in ASP.NET

  Formatting is the process of converting a variable from its native type into a string representation. Anytime you display a DateTime or numeric variables in an ASP.NET page, you are formatting that variable from its native type into some sort of string representation. How a DateTime or numeric variable is formatted depends on the culture settings and the format string. Because dates and numeric values are formatted differently across cultures, the .NET Framework bases its formatting on the specified culture settings. By default, the formatting routines use the culture settings defined on the web server, but you can indicate that a particular culture be used anytime you format. In addition to the culture settings, formatting is also affected by a format string, which spells out the formatting details to apply. The .NET Framework contains a bounty of format strings. There are standard format strings, which are typically a single letter that applies detailed formatting logic. For example, the "C" format specifier will format a numeric type as a currency value; the "Y" format specifier displays the month name and four-digit year of the specified DateTime value. There are also custom format strings, which display a apply a very specific formatting rule. These custom format strings can be put together to build more intricate formats. For instance, the format string "dddd, MMMM d" displays the full day of the week name followed by a comma followed by the full name of the month followed by the day of the month. For more involved formatting scenarios, where neither the standard or custom format strings cut the mustard, you can always create your own formatting extension methods.   Using Shotwell, I discovered that to publish to Flickr I need to set up an online account. But the online-accounts system settings only has support for Google, Facebook, Windows Live, Microsoft Exchange and Enterprise Login (Kerberos). How do I add account types? These appear to be properly installed (dpkg-reconfigure returns silently): gnome-control-center-signon is already the newest version. account-plugin-yahoo is already the newest version. account-plugin-flickr is already the newest version. • Oracle 64-bit assembly throws BadImageFormatException when running unit tests

  We recently upgraded to the 64-bit Oracle client. Since then, Visual Studio 2010 unit tests that hit the database (I know, unit tests shouldn't hit the database--they're not perfect) all fail with this error message:Test method MyProject.Test.SomeTest threw exception: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'Oracle.DataAccess, Version=4.112.3.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.I resolved this by changing the test settings to run tests in 64-bit. From the Test menu, go to Edit Test Settings, and pick your settings file. Go to Hosts, and change the "Run tests in 32 bit or 64 bit process" dropdown to "Run tests in 64 bit process on 64 bit machine". Now your tests should run.This fix makes me a little nervous. Visual Studio 2010 and earlier seem to change that file for no apparent reason, add more settings files, etc. If you're not paying attention, you could have TestSettings1.testsettings through TestSettings99.testsettings sitting there and never notice the difference. So it's worth making a note of how to change it in case you have to redo it, and being vigilant about files VS tries to add.I'm not entirely clear on why this was even a problem. Isn't that the point of an MSIL assembly, that it's not specific to the hardware it runs on? An IL disassembler can open the Oracle.DataAccess.dll in question, and in its Runtime property, I see the value "v4.0.30319 / x64". So I guess the assembly was specifically build to target 64-bit platforms only, possibly due to a 64-bit-specific difference in the external Oracle client upon which it depends. Most other assemblies, especially in the .NET Framework, list "msil", and a couple list "x86". So I guess this is another entry in the long list of ways Oracle refuses to play nice with Windows and .NET.If this doesn't solve your problem, you can read others' research into this error, and where to change the same test setting in Visual Studio 2012.

• How to start a task before networking?

  I've written an upstart task that modifies /etc/network/interfaces. (Actually a file sourced into it.) Which start on condition do I need to declare to let my task run before any networking jobs? I've tried start on starting networking, but that's apparently too late. When I log in after booting I can see that the changes were written, but obviously they are not used: the new config states a static IP, but the boot process waits for a non-existing DHCP server (old config) to time out. I've also tried start on starting network-interface INTERFACE=eth0, which didn't work either. IIRC there was an error in the log that the change couldn't be written. Background: I need a VM template that can be cloned and the clones configured through a script. Among other settings, I need to give them a static IP address to access them from the host. I use guestfish to write a config file to one of the virtual disks and let a script apply these settings to the system. I don't want that disk to contain an actual system settings file. I can't modify /etc directly, because that disk is shared (copy-on-write/diff) among the clones and guestfish apparently doesn't support that type of image. I could also let them use DHCP and setup a server that assigns IP by MAC, but I'm afraid of the complexity. I could also add just another virtual disk for configuration files, but if possible I'd prefer to store settings directly on the system disk image. Used software: Ubuntu Server 12.04, VirtualBox. The configuration modifier is a self written ruby script.

  I installed Dashboard following this guide: http://wiki.openstack.org/OpenStackDashboard Everything fine, but when I run the server, I can not login with the username and password in DATABASE config in local_settings.py. • Massive Xubuntu desktop malfunction

  I'm using Xubuntu 11.04. Before everything worked fine, but when booting today the following happened: 1) Window focus does not leave the first-opened program. This means that if I keep Firefox open, and open a terminal, window focus will never be transferred to the terminal. (EDIT: if I open a terminal first, and then open Firefox, Firefox steals focus) 2) Window menus have disappeared. The maximize, minimize, etc., buttons and menu are gone. 3) In Xfce Settings Manager, the "Window Manager" settings window is empty. There is just a gray screen there, so I cannot modify any window settings. 4) The keyboard shortcuts I had previously defined using the Settings Manager do no longer work. Further, ALT-TAB no longer works for cycling between windows. 5) The mouse pointer does not show when I first log in. I have to log out and log in again (with an invisible pointer) before the mouse shows itself. EDIT: 6) I cannot resize or move the Thunderbird window, but I can move the Firefox window What can I do to troubleshoot this?

• How to adjust the appearance of the Unity in 12.10?

  Now I updated to 12.10 and would like to adjust the desktop, well unity, appearance. I know there is the theme setting, but I cannot adjust the symbol theme or windows decoration with the systemsettings. I used to use the tool "unsettings" but it doesn't work with 12.10 anymore. Ubuntu Tweak used to be an option but at this point many features are broken and a lot of settings seem to mess up my system or they don't change anything at all (I understand that there has been a design settings change - gsettings, dconf, something ...) myunity has some options to change stuff but I couldn't find it for 12.10 ... not to forget "gnome-tweak-tool" which seems to work for most settings but not for all, e.g. it doesn't change the mouse cursor and the windows decorations do not show some decorations I'd like to use and I am also afraid of messing things up because it is supposed to be used in gnomeshell ... actually as I found out right now it really messes things up: fonts get inverted, suddenly high contrast accessibility setings are used in some windows, nautilus has white fonts on white background and even the login manager is a mess now ... So: How can I adjust the theme, symbol, decorations, fonts for the normal user and for the desktop and for the applications including the applications started as sudo user? I should mention that I upgraded from 12.04 and that some applications like synaptic completely ignore any settings ... sadly it is a mess, there was a time when gnome theming was really well done and very adjustable, I wonder what happened ... Just now I read that further development of Ubuntu Tweak has been stopped. The developer announced that he won't go any further with the software and the online services ... That is sad and destroys my hope for easy appearance editing just by waiting ... has been such a nice tool for 12.04 ... r.i.p.

• Xorg crashes ever since using Nvidia dual monitors

  Well ever since I have used dual monitors with the NVIDIA X Server Settings program my xorg process has been crashing after a while, and its generally a pretty long while of like 6 hours afterwards. Before NVIDIA changed my xorg.conf file I only had xorg crash like twice in 2 months, I can't figure out what is going on. • Cannot connect to wireless network

  I am quite new to using Ubuntu 12.10. All I remember while installing Ubuntu 12.10 was that I didn't check any box specifically to enable wireless connectivity. I tried looking into the various questions posted here - most of them refer to certain commands (redundantly sudo) and things of that sort. I am quite new and wasn't sure of understanding what those commands were trying to do (the network configuration settings - showed up different options, like 'Wireless', 'Wired', 'IPv4', 'IPv6' etc -- I am not sure of what sort of settings are to be made - like for example what sort of 'WEP' settings etc are to be made. Although I wasn't able to connect to the wireless network, I was able to connect to the internet, once I plugged in the ethernet cable. Can someone help me with: 1) Understandng a way to see if Ubuntu is configured to connect to a wireless network. 2) If so - Getting to configure to a wireless network (setting up a new one). 3) Where in ubuntu, should I look for seeing if there are any hardware devices (such as the Broadcom wireless adapter or things of that sort - like the way we use the 'Device manager' in Windows to look into the adapter settings). 4) Reference material to learn and understand the various ubuntu commands. (things like the -lshw etc).

• Did C++11 address concerns passing std lib objects between dynamic/shared library boundaries? (ie dlls and so)?

  One of my major complaints about C++ is how hard in practice it is to pass std library objects outside of dynamic library (ie dll/so) boundaries. The std library is often header-only. Which is great for doing some awesome optimizations. However, for dll's, they are often built with different compiler settings that may impact the internal structure/code of a std library containers. For example, in MSVC one dll may build with iterator debugging on while another builds with it off. These two dlls may run into issues passing std containers around. If I expose std::string in my interface, I can't guarantee the code the client is using for std::string is an exact match of my library's std::string. This leads to hard to debug problems, headaches, etc. You either rigidly control the compiler settings in your organization to prevent these issues or you use a simpler C interface that won't have these problems. Or specify to your clients the expected compiler settings they should use (which sucks if another library specifies other compiler settings). My question is whether or not C++11 tried to do anything to solve these issues?

• How do I stop video tearing? (Nvidia prop driver, non-compositing window manager)

  I have that problem which seemingly afflicts many using the proprietary Nvidia driver: Video tearing: fine horizontal lines (usually near the top of my display) when there is a lot of panning or action in the video. (Note: switching back to the default nouveau driver is not an option, as its seemingly nonexistent power-management drains my battery several times faster) I've tried Totem, Parole, and VLC, and tearing occurs with all of them. The best result has been to use X11 output in VLC, but there is still tearing with relatively moderate action. Hardware: MacBook Air 3,2 -- which has an Nvidia GeForce 320M. There are two common fixes for tearing with Nvidia prop drivers: Turn off compositing, since Nvidia proprietary drivers don't usually play nice with compositing window managers on Linux (Compiz is an exception I'm aware of). But I use an extremely lightweight window manager (Awesome window manager) which is not even capable of compositing (or any cool effects). I also have this problem in Xfce, where I have compositing disabled. Enabling sync to VBlank. To enable this, I set the option in nvidia-settings and then autostart it as nvidia-settings -l with my other autostart programs. This seems to work, because when I run glxgears, I get: $ glxgears Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate. 303 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.500 FPS 300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.992 FPS And when I check the refresh rate using nvidia-settings: $ nvidia-settings -q RefreshRate Attribute 'RefreshRate' (wampum:0.0; display device: DFP-2): 60.00 Hz. All this suggests sync to VBlank is enabled. As I understand it, this is precisely designed to stop tearing, and a lot of people's problem is even getting something like glxgears to output the correct info. • Installing datacommons from sunlight

  I know strictly nothing from python and I am installing datacommons from the sunlightlabs. So I followed step by step the README.md https://github.com/sunlightlabs/datacommons First, it is said in the doc to add to the virtualenv dc_data, dc_matcchbox but I didn't find them. But I went to the final step to run ./manage.py runserver so I had the following message : (datacommons)newben@newben-VirtualBox:~/share-ubuntu/sunlightlabs-datacommons-e3ff1a3$ ./manage.py runserver fatal: Not a git repository (or any parent up to mount parent /home/mbenchoufi) Stopping at filesystem boundary (GIT_DISCOVERY_ACROSS_FILESYSTEM not set). Error: Can't find the file 'settings.py' in the directory containing './manage.py'. It appears you've customized things. You'll have to run django-admin.py, passing it your settings module. (If the file settings.py does indeed exist, it's causing an ImportError somehow.) In the 'sunlightlabs-datacommons-e3ff1a3' folder, I downloaded and put the files from github. By the way I didin't understand how to deal with the settings file. Could someone help me understand how to install datacommons ?
