• Is there a distributed project management software like Redmine?

  I am quite familiar with and love using git, among other reasons due to its distributed nature. Now I'd like to set up some similarly distributed (FOSS) Project Management software with features similar to what Redmine offers, such as Issue & time tracking, milestones Gantt charts, calendar git integration, maybe some automatic linking of commits and issues Wiki (preferably with Mathjax support) Forum, news, notifications Multiple Projects However, I am looking for a solution that does not require a permanently accesible server, i.e. like in git, each user should have their own copy which can be easily synchronized with others. However it should be possible to not have a copy of every Project on every machine. Since trac uses multiple instances for multiple projects anyway, I was considering using that, but I neither know how well it adapts to simply giting the database itself (which would be be easiest way to handle the distribution due to git being used anyway), nor does it include all of Redmine's feature. So, can you recommend me a distributed project management software? If your suggestion is a software that usually runs on a server please include a description of the distribution method (e.g. whether simply putting the data in a git repository would do the trick), and if it's e.g. trac, please mention plugins required to include the features mentioned.

• Use 3 monitors w/built-in intel adapter + two old nvidia PCI cards on 10.10?

  I'd like to move from windows with my current workstation. The only thing holding me back is that I have 3 monitors connected to the system and I really take advantage of the real estate when working. I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on the system and one of the monitors is up and running just fine. This monitor is connected to the built-in Intel adapter. I also have two old nVidia GeForce4 MX 4000 (nv19pl) cards in my two PCI slots with two monitors connected to them respectively. I installed the legacy (and proprietary) nVidia drivers (the nvidia-96 package) that claims to support these old cards. Now the question is how to get X configured to use all adapters (using two different drivers) so I can use all three monitors (and is this even possible)? From what I've read, it looks like I'll have to write an xorg.conf file since the nVidia driver doesn't support the auto-magic configuration supported by other drivers. On this site: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config it says that on 10.10 I just need to write an xorg.conf "containing only those sections and options that you need to override Xorg's autoconfigurated settings". So, does this mean I can get away with only including the nVidia-specific configuration stuff and all else will get auto-configured? Or, will providing a config with a "Device" section overrule the auto-magic from detecting/using the Intel adapter? I ran the included nvidia-xconfig to generate a basic, nVidia-specific xorg.conf but I'm hesitant to reboot with it in place, suspecting I'll have a screwed up display. Also, is there any way (any tool or command) to generate an xorg.conf from the current, auto-configured running state of an X session? If I have to write a full, complete config, I'd rather start with one that includes everything that's been auto-detected thus far (and merge it with my nVidia version). Anyhow, any info and thoughts are greatly appreciated (as are answers).

• Ubuntu 12.04.2 won't boot after bumblebee instalation

  First of all sorry for my English, it's not my first language. Here is what I have done: I had a working ubuntu 12.04 with all updates and working bumblebee, so I could do optirun command and battery life was better than without bumblebee. Than I decided to reinstall both my systems installed windows 7 and ubuntu. Reinstalled Windows 7 all working as expected, than on other partition installed ubuntu 12.04. All worked perfectly. Than I installed bumblebee according to the procedure written here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee same steps that I used before. But now after I install drivers and do all written in procedure and I reboot my notebook system won't boot, it is simply stuck at black screen after short showing of start screen. I reinstalled ubuntu many times already and tried everthing, but when I try install nvidia drivers it won't boot after shutting down notebook and only thing I can do is reinstalling system. I have Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 and processor: Intel® Core™ i5-3210M CPU and graphic cards are Intel HD 4000 and Nvidia geforce gt630m After clean install without bumblebee, terminal command lspci| grep VGA is showing: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 0de9 (rev a1) Can you suggest a sollution?? Or at least some links to similar topics??

• Why are some seasoned ASP.NET developers defecting to Ruby on Rails?

  Once a while I hear some known ASP.NET developer declaring that they quit developing in .NET and moving to Ruby using Ruby in Rails. The problem is they don't mention exactly the reasons. They use words like RoR is 'easier', 'better' & 'faster'. That really doesn't say much to me. Anyone care to do faithful comparison using code samples, case studies ..etc or from personal experience in using both? Try to convince me to throw away all my years of learning C#, the .NET Framework using a powerful IDE (Visual Studio). Does RoR save you hours a week in development time? What are the major pain points in .NET that compels one to move away from it? This question is NOT about a pure RoR vs ASP.NET (MVC) comparison. It's about the compelling technical reasons (getting bored does not count!) to switch over after using a platform for several years and start with a new language and platform. (prefer this to be a wiki)

After checking http://www.wikimatrix.org for Wikis with integrated tracking system and RCS support, and filtering out seemingly stale project, the choices basically boil down to Foswiki, TWiki and Ikiwiki. The latter doesn't seem to offer as many usability features, and in the TWiki vs Foswiki issue I tend to the latter. Finally, there is Fossil, which starts from the other end by attempting to replace git entirely and tracking itself. I am however not too comfortable with the thought of replacing git, and Fossil's non-SCM features don't seem to be as developed. Now before I invest too much time when someone else might already have tried this, I basically have two questions: Are there crucial features of Project Management software like Redmine that Foswiki does not provide even with all the extensions available? How to set Foswiki up to use git instead of the perl RcsLite?

• Weblogic - Dynamic Clustering in practice by Andy Overton

  The latest version of Weblogic (12.1.2) includes support for Dynamic Clustering. For more details on what else is new in 12.1.2 see my previous blog post. In this blog post I will look at setting up a dynamic cluster on 2 machines with 4 managed servers (2 on each). I will then deploy an application to the cluster and show how to expand the cluster. What is a dynamic cluster? A dynamic cluster is any cluster that contains one or more dynamic servers. Each server in the cluster will be based upon a single shared server template. The server template allows you to configure each server the same and ensures that servers do not need to be manually configured before being added to the cluster. This allows you to easily scale up or down the number of servers in your cluster without the need for setting up each server manually. • How to keep word document, html and pdf documentation aligned

  Is there a way to write documentation in a WYSIWYG editor which can then export into HTML, WORD and PDF and keep copies synchronized? This documentation are mostly technical notes and some contextual help for some softwares so they must contain images and some styling, they are not programmer's documentation (API list or functions list) for which probably a program like Javadoc or Doxygen would be the best choice. For example how do companies with hundreds different software lines and thousands of programmers deal with this? I have several solutions but they all seem lacking in some aspect: Latex/Tex : very good pdf and html export, not very user friendly and no full-blown WYSIWYG editor available. LibreOffice/OpenOffice : full blown WYSIWYG editor however html export not so good (need to edit manually exported html which needs to be maintained separately ) Mediawiki or any other wiki : could be keeping documentation in wikitext format, so html is automatically generated, pdf exportation is quite good with many available plugins. Again however need some formation for the staff to use it and need to setup a server for this. Notice I'm not asking for software A vs software B, I'm asking for general advice, big companies procedures for documentation and yes some software product names if available.

• Spinup time failure

  I am not sure this is a real question or a bug I should report Ubuntu. Using: Ubuntu 11.10, on a Intel Q6600, Samsung Spinpoint F4 2TB. I have set my PC on Suspend and after I came back, pressed Enter and after logging in everything was back to normal. However, I had a message from Disk Utility that one disk reports errors. I entered Disk Utility, and my Samsung 2TB disk, the one on which my Ubuntu is installed, had the SMART Status turned red, with error message on it. The error was: Spinup time failed Value 21, Threshold value was 25 (so the error was reported because 21 < 25) I restarted and booted up in Windows to see what HD Tune is reporting. Unfortunately it was exactly the same 21/25. After reading up on Wiki about SMART and the errors, I discovered that Spinup time is the time required for the disk to reach full spinning speed in milliseconds. Then it hit me that, in Ubuntu I had Suspended the system, making essentially all my hardware stop. And when I rebooted to Windows, the hardware doesn't really stop, so SMART's reading of the Spinup time was still from Ubuntu's suspension. So I did a full PC stop and then booted up again, both in Ubuntu and Windows to see if there are different readings. Both reported successful Spinup time, 68 (a little better then 21 :) ), although in Disk Utility I have a nice message: Failed in the Past So now I am pretty sure that Ubuntu didn't handle the Suspend correctly, but then again should I worry about Imminent hardware failure ? Am I missing some drivers? Should I report this as a bug to Ubuntu? Sorry if this was a bad place to ask this question.

  When I open a letter size PDF and then zoom to 100%, the page physically displayed on my monitor is smaller than a real letter size sheet of paper. How can I make "100%" on the computer screen correspond with "100%" in real life? Details This message suggests that I should be investigating the system-wide DPI settings for my monitor. xdpyinfo reports: dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (271x203 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch My monitor has a native display resolution of 1024x768 pixels and a diagonal display size of 12.07 inches. PX CALC returns the following information: DPI: 106.05 Dot Pitch: 0.2395mm Size: 9.66" × 7.24" (24.53cm × 18.39cm) What I've tried so far Running xrandr --dpi 106.05 successfully caused my PDF to appear actual size at 100%, but this effect was lost after rebooting. To make the setting persistent I tried creating the following /etc/X11/xorg.conf: Section "Monitor" Identifier "ThinkPad X60 LCD" DisplaySize 245 183 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Monitor "ThinkPad X60 LCD" EndSection After re-logging in, /var/log/Xorg.0.log contained [ 1167.824] (**) intel(0): Display dimensions: (245, 183) mm [ 1167.824] (**) intel(0): DPI set to (106, 106) but xdpyinfo still reported dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (271x203 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch and "100%" still appeared too small. • Why does my browser take me to Scour.com? (redirect virus)

  The "scour" or Rootkit.Win32.TDSS virus has a long history which can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scour Here is the primary symptom: after searching for something in your web browser using google, one of the results that you click on redirects you to scour.com. If you've executed ClamWin, Malwarebytes, McAfee, Norton, etc. to find and isolate the virus without any luck--this isn't really a surprise, since this virus attaches to existing system drivers. I only know of one reliable package that will remove this without ill effects--like adding new spyware. This package is called TDSSKiller. I have seen multiple websites that claim to have this software available, but the one that I know is reliable is located here: http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684 Once you go to Kaspersky's tech support site, the TDSSKiller zip file is available for downloading. When you execute this software, you will be able to "cure" or repair the infected driver. Remember to jot down the name of the driver for future reference--should you need to reinstall the driver from a "same-as" working computer, or your install disk if the repair is ineffective. The driver that happened to get infected on my computer was the tcpip.sys driver. This caused my win sockets to loose their ip addresses. In most other instances, less critical drivers such as HDAudBus.sys are infected. In my case, I was not through correcting my computer problems until I corrected the broken WinSock issue and loaded an earlier version of the tcpip.sys driver from: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 which I placed in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers Don't forget to reboot your computer after your repair! Once you download TDSSKiller and cure/repair your infected driver(s), the redirect on google searches should disappear .

I am starting to think about how the accompanying website will be hosted and would greatly appreciate some advice. Requirements: Domain #1 Information about the project itself (just pages and pictures). Documentation / Wiki Forums Download of project source (approx 3MB archive) Download of various themes and community contributed content (est. sizes 10KB ~ 512KB). Domain #2 Primary company website that offers products and services. This will be primarily pictures and pages. What kind of web hosting would be best for a project like this. I am working on a very tight budget and can only afford to spend up to £250 per year for hosting this. I was considering using some sort of VPS hosting. • Ubuntu 13.10 AMD/ATI proprietary driver slow boot time, black screen after logging in and lengthy login/logout delays

  Ubuntu 13.10 is causing me major headaches with my AMD/ATI HD 5770 GPU. Below is a list of problems I am currently encountering. 1) The boot time is extended by at least 25s after installing catalyst 13.4. Using open source radeon drivers, my boot time till the login screen is ~10s. With catalyst 13.4 installed, the boot time increases to ~35s. This was not the case in Ubuntu 13.04, 12.10 or 12.04. I have done the driver installation manually (instructions from wiki.cchtml.com) and using software center and there is no difference. I have not tried the catalyst 13.8 beta driver. 2) After manual installation of catalyst 13.4, I get stuck at a black screen after logging in. I have to purge fglrx to resolve the problem. I tried sudo amdconfig --initial -f but it didn't help. 3) The delay between logging in and unity being displayed is ~10-15s for BOTH open source and proprietary drivers. During the delay, it's just a black screen. Whenever I logout, there is again a ~10-15s delay with the login screen appearing stuck before lightdm allows me to enter my password again. This is ridiculous! Yes, I could stick with open source radeon drivers but I would like to install Steam and play my Valve collection on the machine. Is anybody else encountering similar issues?

Do you try to avoid using them? Are they overused in general? If your favorite language has properties (mine does) then such things are also considered getters and setters for this question. They are same thing from an OO methodology perspective. They just have nicer syntax.
