• How to check using a script if project is opened in XCode?

  Hi, I'd like to introduce build number feature for my iPhone project and increase it automatically with every commit to my git repo. I plan to do it using Apple's agvtool, which recommends that project is not opened in XCode at the time So my questions are: 1) So far I know that I need to make an executable script from .git/hooks/pre-commit.sample. How to do the scripting to check if certain project is opened in XCode? 2) pre-commit.sh will be executed upon calling git commit with no args, so whenever someone will commit with -a option, I won't have my build number updated. Is there any way to workaround this? Cheers

• I would like to learn C++, what is the first step ?

  My actual experience comes from PHP and Delphi(Borland) and recently also from Obj-C (iPhone sdk). In the past I also used Java, Python, VB 6 and some other scripting language. I would like to learn C++ because i need a standard tool for write compiled applications with good performance but i have no idea about witch environment i have to choose (Ex: Borland, Microsoft, Eclipse+MinGW, ...). Based those parameters: Most useful more opensource project or work requests Most standard not a proprietary versions Biggest community documentation, manuals, tutorials, forums... Better IDE add-ons, highlight, debug, cross platform, autocomplete... Easy setup A simple setup, to focus on learning the basics Actually I'm on OSX but I can use a VM if needed. Advices about tutorial or books are welcome. I hope it's not too generic as question.

• Restoring a saved opengl ES buffer (i.e. writing it back to screen)

  I'm writing an iPhone app where I need to save and load the screen contents. I was able to save the screen using glReadPixels(), but since there's no glDrawPixels() in openGL ES, I'm having a lot of trouble restoring that buffer to the screen. I gather that I need to save the screen as a texture: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/708760/what-is-the-equivalent-of-gldrawpixels-in-opengl-es-1-1 But I'm not sure how to implement this. Does anyone have or know of any code samples that do this? I'm an openGL noob, so any help would be greatly appreciated :)

• how to scroll table on the click event of some cell in objective c?

• Dropdowns don't work on webOS with PhoneGap?

  I'm trying to use a dropdown in a PhoneGap app I'm writing. It uses a simple <select>: <select> <option value="1">First</option> <option value="2">Second</option> </select> This works fine on Android and the iPhone (including behaving like a native drop-down would on those systems). However, it doesn't appear to work on webOS (neither the Palm Pre itself nor the emulator). The <select> displays properly on the screen, but when I tap on it, nothing happens--I'm not able to make a selection from the dropdown. Why might this be?

• How could I use AJAX to create a Json data source .txt file?

  I'm creating a form that collects standard information about customers. When the user hits save, I would like to create a .txt file that would be used to later retrieve all of the data collected from customers. I'm using DataTables which is a jQuery plugin to display the data. The .txt file would be formatted to be saved as such: { "aaData": [ ["client 1 name","address","city","state","zip"], ["client 2 name","address","city","state","zip"], ["client 3 name","address","city","state","zip"], ... ["client x name","address","city","state","zip"] ] } Where "aaData": is used by DataTables. This is going to part of an iPhone app, so the data source has to be very small and not reliant on a constant connection to a server, so, essentially, a client-side data source. The .txt file has to also be updated when edited and saved, and then replaced every time it is downloaded.

• Why isn't my javascript working on a local HTML file using UIWebView loadRequest:?

  Hi Everyone, I have a script that generates a temporary HTML file that has links to external Javascript files that it requires to run. <script src="file:///Users/raphaeldefranco/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/User/Applications/BA9E724E-76BD-4F28-B224-54B4C73786D6/LogTen.app/Reports/Time by Year/../../Tools/PlotKit/Base.js" type="text/javascript"></script> The links are absolute and they are to the right place (There is a CSS link as well that uses the same method and it works fine). I've been using the following, which finds images and CSS just fine but for some reason won't run the .js. [webView loadRequest:requestObj]; I've tried changing the encoding of the files. I had a problem getting the CSS to work until the file was in unicode, but so far no luck. All the Script files are bundled with my project etc. Thanks in advance!

• What motivates people to learn a new programming language?

  There are plenty of question asking Which Programming Language Should I Learn? but I have not found an answer yet to the question what really motivates people to learn a specific new language?. There are the people who think they should learn a new language every year for educational purpose. How do they decide on the languages to be learned? Then I guess there are people who learn a new language because people around them told it is a fun language and they can build nice things with it. Of course if the current job requires it people would learn a new language but I think if the language seems to have a potential to earn money (e.g. There are plenty of jobs in Java or ObjectiveC can be used to write apps for the iPhone and make money). So why are you learning a new language or why have you learned the languages you know?

• Debuggin in Xcode

  I'm toying with iPhone app development. Often times I would run into runtime error and I would have no idea where the error occurs (e.g. the exact line). In console app with GCC I could at least compile with the -g flag. dump a core file and read that core file in to get to the last line that got into trouble. But how would I do that in Xcode? Build and Debug doesn't seem to have the debugging symbol loaded.

• Django AND .htaccess rewrites/redirects, is this possible?

  Is it possible to have Apache htaccess rewrites take effect before it hits django? For example so I can redirect iPhone users to a completely different domain without even hitting django. • Beginner: Best Practices in an Android App UI Navagation

  I am trying to learn how to do stuff in Android, and I'm not sure of the best way to build the interface. I've been working on porting an iPhone app, which uses navigation controllers and table views for looking at the different sections: basically, someone touches a cell in the table, which drills down to another table. when they touch a cell on that table it drills down to a webview that displays the information. I want to do something similar for the android app, but I don't know how, or if there is a better way native to Android. I've figured out how to use the webview to my purposes, but moving forward and backward in the table tree is unclear.

  Hi, I'm working through the Stanford iPhone podcasts and have some basic questions. The first: why is there no easy string concatenation? (or am I just missing it?) I needed help with the NSLog below, and have no idea what it's currently doing (the %@ part). Do you just substitute those in wherever you need concatenation, and then comma separate the values at the end? NSString *path = @"~"; NSString *absolutePath = [path stringByExpandingTildeInPath]; NSLog(@"My home folder is at '%@'", absolutePath); whereas with any other programing language I'd have done it like this: NSLog(@"My home folder is at " + absolutePath); Thanks! • How can I know if a computer supports hardware-assisted virtualization before I purchase the computer?

  I'm an iPhone programmer who is no longer in possession of a personal Mac computer on which to use XCode. I have two Windows desktops, and I would like to run OS X in VMWare rather than purchase Apple's expensive hardware. However, neither of my machines supports hardware-assisted virtualization, which is required to virtualize OS X. I went shopping online for a computer today, since I've been planning to purchase a laptop anyway, but sites like Best Buy don't appear to give any indication of whether or not a product supports this. Is there any other site out there or some trick to figuring this out other than buying the machine and running Microsoft's nifty little detection tool?

  My situation: We have a mobile version of our website, and want to start redirecting mobile users to it. The plan is to do this in Apache httpd.conf or .htaccess, using something like this: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} (iPhone|Blackberry|...) RewriteRule (.*) mobile/$1 However we want there to be a way for users to override our default action of redirecting them. One way we thought to do it was to show a link on the mobile site directing back to the regular site, and store a cookie when they use that link. Could the Apache configuration file check a cookie before redirecting? Is there a better way?

  I'd like to be able to mimic the behavior of the :active pseudo class on all elements in Android webkit. Currently, the :active syntax only works on a elements (links). • Using View multiple times in Interface Builder

  I'm using a UITableview and have a custom Cell with some labels. I set up all the constraints in Interface Builder. Now I'm using this Cell multiple times, I just copied it in IB. Now it's the time to change some of these contraints because of some bugs (I'm converting a iPhone App to an Universal). But it can't be right that I now have to set the constraints manually for every cell? How do I do right? If I want to control the constraints in one central place, do I have to set them up in Code? • Android App: Proximity

  Is there an API for Android that will find other people nearby running the same app? For instance, if you were to perform a "scan" it tries to find other people running the same app nearby. Would it be possible to perform the same task across multiple OS (Android, iPhone, Windows, etc.)? Or would the best way be to just have the app communicate to a server your location and have a server-side app that pushes a list of others nearby??? My goal is to find an easy way to eventually transmit data between two devices contigent on those that are nearby.

• Should my web based app be a consumer of my api?

  I will be developing a mobile app (iPhone) and a web based app (Django) soon. For the mobile app I will be creating a REST api (most likely using Django) to send data back and forth from phone to server. When I comes time to create the web based version does it make sense to just create it as any other client of the api. In other words both the mobile app and the web app will get there data from an external API over HTTP. Or should the web based app have direct access to the database that the api is using and just get its data that way?

  I need to store data to represent this: Water + Fire = Steam Water + Earth = Mud Mud + Fire = Rock The goal is the following: I have draggable HTML divs, and when <div id="Fire"> and <div id="Mud"> overlap, I add <div id="Rock"> to the screen. Ever played Alchemy on iPhone or Android? Same stuff Right now, the way I'm doing this is a JS object : var stuff = { 'Steam' : { needs: [ 'Water', 'Fire'] }, 'Mud' : { needs: [ 'Water', 'Earth'] }, 'Rock' : { needs: [ 'Mud', 'Fire'] }, // etc... }; and every time a div overlaps with another one, I traverse the object keys and check the 'needs' array. I can deal with that structure but I was wondering if I could do any better? Edit: I should add that I also need to store a few other things, like a short description or an icon name.   I'd like to know which one is fastest for testing a non-empty NSString for iOS 4.0+ (iPhone 3G). Note: the strings to test will be 99% of the time from 2 to 100 chars length. if ([foo length] > 0) or if ([foo isEqualToString:@""] == NO && foo != nil) I think it depends if isEqualToString: compares the length first (and in that case first way is faster) or if isEqualToString: compares first character of strings first (and in that case second way might be faster). ps: I already know isEqualToString: is faster than isEqual: which is itself faster than compare:.

• How can I write an autostarting dock app for the Mac?

  I have an application I'd like to build that starts when you start the mac and will appear in the dock. I have some experience with Objective-C and iPhone dev but none with Mac dev, I'm also a PC user normally so I'm not au fait with the norms of Mac usage. Any guidance here is appreciated. How do you get an application to autostart? Can you run an app in the tray bar? (with the clock etc in) or do apps only run in the dock?
