• feedparser fails during script run, but can't reproduce in interactive python console

  It's failing with this when I run eclipse or when I run my script in iPython: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xe2 in position 32: ordinal not in range(128) I don't know why, but when I simply execute the feedparse.parse(url) statement using the same url, there is no error thrown. This is stumping me big time. • How do I pass a callback function to sqlite3_exec on iOS 5.1?

  I am new to both xcode/iOS/Objective-C and sqlite. I am trying to teach myself the basics - and I would like to use the sqlite3 wrapper "sqlite3_exec" for a select query. For some reason, I can't find a simple example anywhere of someone doing this. Basically, the method has a parameter (the third one) for a callback function: int sqlite3_exec( sqlite3*, /* An open database */ const char *sql, /* SQL to be evaluated */ int (*callback)(void*,int,char**,char**), /* Callback function */ void *, /* 1st argument to callback */ char **errmsg /* Error msg written here */ ); That's fine. I'm no stranger to callbacks. However, I just can't seem to get the syntax down right. But, XCode doesn't like the "myCallback" usage at the bottom there. It says: Undeclared Use of Identifier 'myCallback.' That method is declared in the header file, and I've even tried making it static. Nothing seems to make this error go away. I know I must be doing something fundamentally wrong here, but for the life of me I can't figure out what - I can't even find other code samples in this area that could help me figure out what I'm missing.   Im using c# .net windows form application. I have created a database which has many tables. In one of the tables I have entered data. In this table I have 4 columns named key, name,age,value. Here the name "key" of the first column is a key word. Now I am trying to get these column names into a combo box. I am unable to get the name "key". • [Repost-ish] Impossibly slow queries, Tables indexed, How can I speed it up?

  Hi guys, I posted a little earlier on here at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2656837/query-results-taking-too-long-on-200k-database-speed-up-tips asking about slow executing SQL queries. I was told to index the columns; I did. and its still slow (slow as in, i never see the results, both mysql and sqlite freeze up on query). Help would be greatly appreciated. • PHP/SQL/Wordpress: Group a user list by alphabet

  I want to create a (fairly big) Wordpress user index with the users categorized alphabetically, like this: A Amy Adam B Bernard Bianca and so on. I've created a custom Wordpress query which works fine for this, except for one problem: It also displays "empty" letters, letters where there aren't any users whose name begins with that letter. I'd be glad if you could help me fix this code so that it only displays the letter if there's actually a user with a name of that letter :) I've tried my luck by checking how many results there are for that letter, but somehow that's not working. • GAE python database object design for simple list of values

  I'm really new to database object design so please forgive any weirdness in my question. Basically, I am use Google AppEngine (Python) and contructing an object to track user info. One of these pieces of data is 40 Achievement scores. Do I make a list of ints in the User object for this? Or do I make a separate entity with my user id, the achievement index (0-39) and the score and then do a query to grab these 40 items every time I want to get the user data in total? The latter approach seems more object oriented to me, and certainly better if I extend it to have more than just scores for these 40 achievements. However, considering that I might not extend it, should I even consider just doing a simple list of 40 ints in my user data? I would then forgo doing a query, getting the sorted list of achievements, reading the score from each one just to process a response etc. Is doing this latter approach just such a common practice and hand-waved as not even worth batting an eyelash at in terms of thinking it might be more costly or complex processing wise?

• What is the best way to update an unattached entity on Entity Framework?

  Hi, In my project I have some data classes to retrieve data from the database using the Entity Framework. We called these classes *EntityName*Manager. So, my question is "what is the best way to create an update method on my *EntityA*Manager class?" I'd like to pass the modified entity as a parameter of the method. • apt-get install phpmyadmin on debian doesn't install /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf

  I'm trying to install phpmyadmin on my webserver, using this guide: http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu_debian_lamp_server I did that once, and it worked like a dream, but I hated the looks of phpmyadmin (maybe the oldest layout ever) and decided to delete it, and didn't know that deleting is done with apt-get remove phpmyadmin and did in phpmyadmin directory rm * and thought that it's done. However, as I can't find the debian build of phpmyadmin anywhere, I want to install it again, but when I add Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf to /etc/apache2/apache2.conf, and restart apache, it give's me this error: apache2: Syntax error on line 73 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf: No such file or directory Action 'configtest' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. failed! No matter how I try, I always get this error, and phpmyadmin isn't there.

  I want to be able to ban users by IP. My idea is to keep a list of IP's as rows in an BannedIPs table (the IP column would be an index). To check users' IP's against the table, I will keep a session variable called $_SESSION['IP'] for each session. If on any request, $_SESSION['IP'] doesn't match $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'], I will update $_SESSION['IP'] and check the BannedIPs table to see if the IP is banned. (A flag will also be saved as a session variable specifying whether or not the user is banned) Here are the things I'm wondering: Does that sound like a good strategy with regards to speed and security (would someone be able to get around the IP ban somehow, other than changing IP's)? What's the best way to structure a mysql query that checks to see if a row exists? That is, what's the best way to query the db to see if a row with a certain IP exists (to check if it's banned)? Should I save the IP's as integers or strings? Note that... I estimate there will be between 1,000-10,000 banned IP's stored in the database. $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] is the IP from which the current request was sent.

I tried to put with around the sql query and with(any(RowMapper.class)) for the rowmapper. It wouldn't work either, complains about "not all parameters were given explicit matchers: either all parameters must be specified by matchers or all must be specified by values, you cannot mix matchers and values"

• PHP mysqli Insert not working, but not giving any errors.

  As the title says Im trying to do a simple insert, but nothing actually is inserted into the table. I try to print out errors, but nothing is reported. My users table has many more fields than these 4, but they should all default. $query = 'INSERT INTO users (username, password, level, name) VALUES (?, ?, ?, ?)'; if($stmt = $db -> prepare($query)) { $stmt -> bind_param('ssis', $username, $password, $newlevel, $realname); $stmt -> execute(); $stmt -> close(); echo 'Any Errors: '.$db->error.PHP_EOL; } There are no errors given, but when I go to look at the table in phpmyadmin there is not a new row added. I know for sure that the types are correct (strings and integers). Is there something really wrong here or does it have something to do with the fact that I'm ignoring other columns. I have about 8 columns in the user table.

  Hi there, I need to model the following situation and I can't seem to find a consistent example on how to do it "correctly" for the google app engine. Suppose I've got a simple situation like the following: [Company] 1 ----- M [Stare] A company has one to many stores. Each store has an address made up of a address line 1, city, state, country, postcode etc. Ok. Lets say we need to create say an "Audit". An Audit is for a company and can be across one to many stares. So something like: [Audit] 1 ------ 1 [Company] 1 ------ M [Store] Now we need to query all of the "audits" based on the Store "addresses" in order to send the "Auditors" to the right locations. There seem to be numerous articles like this one: http://code.google.com/appengine/articles/modeling.html Which give examples of creating a "ContactCompany" model class. However they also say that you should use this kind of relationship only when you "really need to" and with "care" for performance. I've also read - frequently - that you should denormalize as much as possible thereby moving all of the "query-able" data into the Audit class. So what would you suggest as the best way to solve this? I've seen that there is an Expando class but I'm not sure if that is the "best" option for this. Any help or thoughts on this would be totally appreciated. Thanks in advance, Matt

  I'm just starting to learn T-SQL and could use some help in understanding what's going on in a particular block of code. The T-SQL code does exactly what I want, which is to make a single result based on the results of a query, which will then be used in another query. However, I can't figure out how the SELECT @column_list =... statement is putting multiple values into a single string of characters by being inside a SELECT statement. Without the assignment to @column_list, the SELECT statement would simply return multiple rows. How is it that by having the variable within the SELECT statement that the results get "flattened" down into one value? How should I read this T-SQL to properly understand what's going on?

• Snow Leopard Servers built in Wiki vs Mediawiki?

  I recently installed Snow Leopard Server and am trying to get the most out of the services it offers, but one thing that currently seems pretty barebones is the Wiki it provides. Can Snow Leopard Servers wiki be modified with plugins the way MediaWiki can? Are there any good plugins to allow you to include templates like MediaWiki? Is there any way to include embeded syntax highlighted example code? Is there even a good name to refer to it as when searching for it? "Snow Leopard Wiki" just turns up a bunch of wikis about SL. Alternatively, how hard is it to install MediaWiki(or some other more advanced wiki engine) on SL Server? Could you plug it in to the same authentication mechanism?

  Hi, I'm trying to work with decimal data in my PHP and MySql practice and I'm not sure about how can I do for an acceptable level af accuracy. I've wrote a simple function which recives my input text value and converts it to a decimal number ready to be stored in the database. <?php function unit ($value, $decimal_point = 2) { return number_format (str_replace (",", ".", strip_tags (trim ($value))), $decimal_point); } ?> I've resolved something like AbdlBsF5%?nl with some jQuery code for replace and some regex to keep only numbers, dots and commas. In some country, people uses the comma , to send decimal numbers, so a number like 72.08 is wrote like 72,08. I'd like avoid to forcing people to change their usual chars and I've decided to use a jQuery to keep this too. Now every web developer knows the last validation must be handled by the dynamic page for security reasons. So my answer is should I use something like unit (); function to store data or shoul I also check if users inserts invalid chars like letters or something else? If I try this and send letters, the query works without save the invalid data, I think this isn't bad, but I could easily be wrong because I'm a rookie. What kind of method should I use if I want a number like 99999.99 for my query?

• Simple, fast SQL queries for flat files.

  Does anyone know of any tools to provide simple, fast queries of flat files using a SQL-like declarative query language? I'd rather not pay the overhead of loading the file into a DB since the input data is typically thrown out almost immediately after the query is run. Consider the data file, "animals.txt": dog 15 cat 20 dog 10 cat 30 dog 5 cat 40 Suppose I want to extract the highest value for each unique animal. I would like to write something like: cat animals.txt | foo "select $1, max(convert($2 using decimal)) group by $1" I can get nearly the same result using sort: cat animals.txt | sort -t " " -k1,1 -k2,2nr And I can always drop into awk from there, but this all feels a bit awkward (couldn't resist) when a SQL-like language would seem to solve the problem so cleanly. I've considered writing a wrapper for SQLite that would automatically create a table based on the input data, and I've looked into using Hive in single-processor mode, but I can't help but feel this problem has been solved before. Am I missing something? Is this functionality already implemented by another standard tool? Halp!

  I am facing a design problem, here is some basic requirement: Aggregator 1. Separate service for blog,video,images and associations. 2. Each of the service should be completely separate, that means they run on separate tomcat. 3. And each aggregator must be able to query local database and other aggregators 4. Traversal of services must be asynchronous using a ring network. For example, we have a ring like ws1-ws2-ws3-ws4-ws1. Each node represents one type of one aggregator. The traveral goes in this way: the query from ws1 to ws2, and ws1 is waiting for the response from ws2 asynchronously; ws2 to ws3, also ws2 wait for ws3 asynchronously. If ws3 has the data, reply to ws2 then to ws1, then reply. However if ws3 goes away, the traversal should go back to ws2, then to ws1, then go to ws4, then go to ws3 again. then tells ws4 since ws3 fails. The required technology is axis2 and tomcat 6. Does anybody have any clue about it? If it is clear, I can clarify the question more clearly. Thanks very much.

  Hi, I'm using TPT inheritance in EF CTP5 with SQL CE 4. I have an abstract base class "Widget" with common properties like "Title". I can successfully save concrete Widget implementations e.g. "TwitterWidget". However, I have a problem retrieving all widgets (or rather ALL widget implementations). My repository exposes the following: public IQueryable<Widget> GetAll(); This effectively returns the IDbSet from the DbContext. The following queries work fine: repo.GetAll().ToList(); repo.GetAll().Where(w => w.Title == "Test").ToList(); repo.GetAll().SingleOrDefault(w => w.Title == "Test"); repo.GetAll().Where(w => w.Title == "Test").OrderBy(x => x.Title).ToList(); However, if I write the following query: repo.GetAll().OrderBy(w => w.Title); I get the following error: Test 'PlanetCloud.Portfolio.Tests.Data.PersistenceTestFixture.Can_get_widgets' failed: System.AccessViolationException : Attempted to read or write protected memory. • DjangoUnicodeDecodeError while storing pickle'd data.

  I've got a simple dict object I'm trying to store in the database after it has been run through pickle. It seems that Django doesn't like trying to encode this error. I've checked with MySQL, and the query isn't even getting there before it is throwing the error, so I don't believe that is the problem. The dict I'm storing looks like this: { 'ordered': [ { 'value': u'First\xd1ame Last\xd1ame', 'label': u'Full Name' }, { 'value': u'123-456-7890', 'label': u'Phone Number' }, { 'value': u'[email protected]', 'label': u'Email Address' } ], 'cleaned_data': { u'Phone Number': u'123-456-7890', u'Full Name': u'First\xd1ame Last\xd1ame', u'Email Address': u'[email protected]' }, 'post_data': <QueryDict: { u'Phone Number': [u'1234567890'], u'Full Name_1': [u'Last\xd1ame'], u'Full Name_0': [u'First\xd1ame'], u'Email Address': [u'[email protected]'] }>, 'user': <User: itis> } The error that gets thrown is: 'utf8' codec can't decode bytes in position 52-53: invalid data. Position 52-53 is the first instance of \xd1 (Ñ) in the pickled data. So far, I've dug around StackOverflow and found a few questions where the database encoding for the objects was wrong. This doesn't help me because there is no MySQL query yet. This is happening before the database. Google also didn't help much when searching for unicode errors on pickled data. It is probably worth mentioning that if I don't use the Ñ, this code works fine.

• Why can't Doctrine retrieve my model data?

  So, I'm trying to use Doctrine to retrieve some data. I have some basic code like this: $conn = Doctrine_Manager::connection(CONNECTION_STRING); $site = Doctrine_Core::getTable('Site')->find('00024'); echo $site->SiteName; However, this keeps throwing a SQL error that 'column siteid does not exist'.   Are there some editors like emacs, vi/vim, specifically for power shell, if so which are the best? I will have to do some work on windows and I need some unix productivity - which means for me shell + text editor with syntax highlighting (for python, java, c, c++), so which are my options? Edit: I'm looking for an alternative at vim or other unix editors, and cygwin is not an option. I just want from the command line to say texteditor_name file1, modify it, save it etc, and all of these to happen inside the terminal, not in another interface etc.

• Win32: IProgressDialog will not disappear until you mouse over it.

  i'm using the Win32 progress dialog. The damnest thing is that when i call: progressDialog.StopProgressDialog(); it doesn't disappear. It stays on screen until the user moves her mouse over it - then it suddenly disappers. The call to StopProgressDialog returns right away (i.e. it's not a synchronous call). i can prove this by doing things after the call has returned: private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { //Force red background to prove we've started this.BackColor = Color.Red; this.Refresh(); //Start a progress dialog IProgressDialog pd = (IProgressDialog)new ProgressDialog(); pd.StartProgressDialog(this.Handle, null, PROGDLG.Normal, IntPtr.Zero); //The long running operation System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10000); //Stop the progress dialog pd.SetLine(1, "Stopping Progress Dialog", false, IntPtr.Zero); pd.StopProgressDialog(); pd = null; //Return form to normal color to prove we've stopped. this.BackColor = SystemColors.Control; this.Refresh(); } The form: starts gray turns red to show we've stared turns back to gray color to show we've called stop So the call to StopProgressDialog has returned, except the progress dialog is still sitting there, mocking me, showing the message: Stopping Progress Dialog Doesn't Appear for 10 seconds Additionally, the progress dialog does not appear on screen until the System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10000); ten second sleep is over. Not limited to .NET WinForms The same code also fails in Delphi, which is also an object wrapper around Window's windows: procedure TForm1.Button1Click(Sender: TObject); var pd: IProgressDialog; begin Self.Color := clRed; Self.Repaint; pd := CoProgressDialog.Create; pd.StartProgressDialog(Self.Handle, nil, PROGDLG_NORMAL, nil); Sleep(10000); pd.SetLine(1, StringToOleStr('Stopping Progress Dialog'), False, nil); pd.StopProgressDialog; pd := nil; Self.Color := clBtnFace; Self.Repaint; end; PreserveSig An exception would be thrown if StopProgressDialog was failing. Most of the methods in IProgressDialog, when translated into C# (or into Delphi), use the compiler's automatic mechanism of converting failed COM HRESULTS into a native language exception. In other words the following two signatures will throw an exception if the COM call returned an error HRESULT (i.e. a value less than zero): //C# void StopProgressDialog(); //Delphi procedure StopProgressDialog; safecall; Whereas the following lets you see the HRESULT's and react yourself: //C# [PreserveSig] int StopProgressDialog(); //Delphi function StopProgressDialog: HRESULT; stdcall; HRESULT is a 32-bit value. If the high-bit is set (or the value is negative) it is an error. i am using the former syntax. So if StopProgressDialog is returning an error it will be automatically converted to a language exception. Note: Just for SaG i used the [PreserveSig] syntax, the returned HRESULT is zero; MsgWait? The symptom is similar to what Raymond Chen described once, which has to do with the incorrect use of PeekMessage followed by MsgWaitForMultipleObjects: "Sometimes my program gets stuck and reports one fewer record than it should. I have to jiggle the mouse to get the value to update. After a while longer, it falls two behind, then three..." But that would mean that the failure is in IProgressDialog, since it fails equally well on CLR .NET WinForms and native Win32 code.
