• referencing a WCF web service

  Our current project uses an asmx service. We want to keep this service for now, but would like to add an additional wcf service for ajax calls. I followed a procedure i found online to set up the service and it works fine with javascript in aspx files within that particular project but i'm unsure how to reference it in javascript files in a different project (in the same solution). If someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. • Pre-allocate memory between HostApp and DLL

  I have a DLL which provided a decoding function, as follows: function MyDecode (Source: PChar; SourceLen: Integer; var Dest: PChar; DestLen: Integer): Boolean; stdcall; The HostApp call "MyDecode", and transfer into the Source, SourceLen and Dest parameters, the DLL returns decoded Dest and DestLen. The problem is: The HostApp impossible to know decoded Dest length, and therefore would not know how to pre-allocated Dest's memory. I know that can split "MyDecode" into two functions: function GetDecodeLen (Source: PChar; SourceLen: Integer): Integer; stdcall; // Return the Dest's length function MyDecodeLen (Source: PChar; SourceLen: Integer; var Dest: PChar): Boolean; stdcall; But, My decoding process is very complicated, so if split into two functions will affect the efficiency. Is there a better solution?

• Using SqlCacheDependency to get real time updates? - ASP.NET

  I would like to display real time updates on a web page (based on a status field in a database table that is altered by an external process). Based on my research, there are several ways of doing this. Long Polling (Comet) - This seems to be complex to implement Regular Polling - I can have an AJAX method trigger a database hit every 5seconds to get the current status. But I fear this will have performance issues. Then I read about using SqlCacheDependency - basically the cache gets invalidated based on a field in the table. I am assuming I can use the event trigerred when the cache is invalidated to show the new update to the user? What's an easy solution that will not have performance issues? anyone?

• Alternatives to ImageMagick for PDF downsizing

  Having an issue with some PDF files not displaying properly in our iPad app. I have come to the conclusion that we are needing to standardize by "converting" PDF to PDF. I have successfully processed this using ImageMagick to convert the PDF to PNG (resized), and then pushing the PNG(s) back into a PDF. However, something within ImageMagick is making photos within PDFs display wrong. Same issue just converting a JPG or other graphic to PDF in ImageMagick. I solved that by taking the output of the converted ImageMagick file and converting it again using GD to PNG, then pushing it through our PDF converter. So my question is this: What other PHP workflows would work with this, other than using ImageMagick for the conversion back to PDF? We are not opposed to a paid solution, we just need something that works. Our server runs centOS.

  In OpenGL Renderer onDrawFrame is called several time, until the page is completely rendered. I cannot find an event that my page is completeley rendered in order to take a snapshot of the OpenGL page and animate it. I have the solution to take snapshot on at the animation trigger (specific button), but this will imply a specific delay, until Bitmap is created, such as i would like to keep in memory a mutable copy of every page. Do you know other way to animate GLSurfaceView with rendered content?   Hello there, Does anyone tell me if it's possible to use WCF without .NET 3.0? Our company develops a 3-tier client-server end-user solution based on .Remoting. One of the limitation of our project is using .NET 2.0. Unfortunately .NET 3.0 framework is too large to be included in our installation package and I don't know if MS license allows this. But WCF might helps us to drastically reduce our efforts in some tasks. Does anyone have a chance to use WCF from Mono? Thanks in advance -- Murat

• Problems with deploying JSF project from Netbeans to Tomcat

  Hi! Googled everything, but can't find solution for my problem. When i'm trying to deploy my project to Tomcat, i have such errors in Tomcat log: SEVERE: Error configuring application listener of class com.sun.faces.config.ConfigureListener java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/servlet/ServletRequestListener I tried to deploy it from fresh Netbeans 6.8 to fresh Tomcat 6.0.26, but the problem is still there. Servlet-api.jar is in the tomcat/lib folder. Tried to replace it with the newest, but problem is still there. No compilation errors. Everything is correct. Problem started suddenly. No code changes, no new jars added. Help? UPD: contents of WEB-INF/lib: hibernate3.jar hibernate-testing.jar quartz-1.7.2.jar quartz-all-1.7.2 servlet-api-2.5-20081211

  Hi All, I want to have an abstract base class for some of my custom UserControl's. The reason is obvious: they share some common properties and methods (a basic implementation of some elements of an interface actually), and I want to implement them only once. I have done this by defining my abstract base class: public abstract class ViewBase : UserControl, ISomeInterface Then I went to implement one of my views, as usual, with the designer: public partial class SpecialView : UserControl //all OK Up to here all is fine. Now I replace the derivation of my SpecialView class with the abstract base class: public partial class SpecialView : ViewBase //disrupts the designer Now, the designer in Visual Studio 2008 won't work anymore, stating: The designer must create an instance of type 'ViewBase' but it cannot because the type is declared as abstract. How can I circumvent this? I just do not want to have the same code copied for all those views. Info: there is a question question with virtual methods, instead of abstract classes, but there is no suitable solution for me.

  Hi guys, This is my first question in stackoverflow but really not the first time to get solution here. I am struggling with multiple join in entity framework 4. I have three tables (Accounts, Users and AccountUsers) that am finding difficult to query. What I want is to get all the users for the provided accountId including the account creator. I can get all the account users with no problem but the hard side for me is getting the account creator since it's not added to AccountUsers table. below is a quick preview how the tables are related. Accounts AccountId UserId (account creator) ...other columns Users UserId ...other columns AccountUsers AccountId UserId I would prefer the query to be esql, but Linq to Entities will do. • Converting Encrypted Values

  Your database has been protecting sensitive data at rest using the cell-level encryption features of SQL Server for quite sometime. The employees in the auditing department have been inviting you to their after-work gatherings and buying you drinks. Thousands of customers implicitly include you in their prayers of thanks giving as their identities remain safe in your company's database. The cipher text resting snuggly in a column of the varbinary data type is great for security; but it can create some interesting challenges when interacting with other data types such as the XML data type. The XML data type is one that is often used as a message type for the Service Broker feature of SQL Server. It also can be an interesting data type to capture for auditing or integrating with external systems. The challenge that cipher text presents is that the need for decryption remains even after it has experienced its XML metamorphosis. Quite an interesting challenge nonetheless; but fear not. There is a solution. To simulate this scenario, we first will want to create a plain text value for us to encrypt. We will do this by creating a variable to store our plain text value: -- set plain text value DECLARE @PlainText NVARCHAR(255); SET @PlainText = 'This is plain text to encrypt'; The next step will be to create a variable that will store the cipher text that is generated from the encryption process. We will populate this variable by using a pre-defined symmetric key and certificate combination: -- encrypt plain text value DECLARE @CipherText VARBINARY(MAX); OPEN SYMMETRIC KEY SymKey     DECRYPTION BY CERTIFICATE SymCert     WITH PASSWORD='mypassword2010';     SET @CipherText = EncryptByKey                          (                            Key_GUID('SymKey'),                            @PlainText                           ); CLOSE ALL SYMMETRIC KEYS; The value of our newly generated cipher text is 0x006E12933CBFB0469F79ABCC79A583--. This will be important as we reference our cipher text later in this post. Our final step in preparing our scenario is to create a table variable to simulate the existence of a table that contains a column used to hold encrypted values. Once this table variable has been created, populate the table variable with the newly generated cipher text: -- capture value in table variable DECLARE @tbl TABLE (EncVal varbinary(MAX)); INSERT INTO @tbl (EncVal) VALUES (@CipherText); We are now ready to experience the challenge of capturing our encrypted column in an XML data type using the FOR XML clause: -- capture set in xml DECLARE @xml XML; SET @xml = (SELECT               EncVal             FROM @tbl AS MYTABLE             FOR XML AUTO, BINARY BASE64, ROOT('root')); If you add the SELECT @XML statement at the end of this portion of the code you will see the contents of the XML data in its raw format: <root>   <MYTABLE EncVal="AG4Skzy/sEafeavMeaWDBwEAAACE--" /> </root> Strangely, the value that is captured appears nothing like the value that was created through the encryption process. The result being that when this XML is converted into a readable data set the encrypted value will not be able to be decrypted, even with access to the symmetric key and certificate used to perform the decryption. An immediate thought might be to convert the varbinary data type to either a varchar or nvarchar before creating the XML data. This approach makes good sense. The code for this might look something like the following: -- capture set in xml DECLARE @xml XML; SET @xml = (SELECT              CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),EncVal) AS EncVal             FROM @tbl AS MYTABLE             FOR XML AUTO, BINARY BASE64, ROOT('root')); However, this results in the following error: Msg 9420, Level 16, State 1, Line 26 XML parsing: line 1, character 37, illegal xml character A quick query that returns CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),EncVal) reveals that the value that is causing the error looks like something off of a genuine Chinese menu. While this situation does present us with one of those spine-tingling, expletive-generating challenges, rest assured that this approach is on the right track. With the addition of the "style" argument to the CONVERT method, our solution is at hand. When dealing with converting varbinary data types we have three styles available to us: - The first is to not include the style parameter, or use the value of "0". As we see, this style will not work for us. - The second option is to use the value of "1" will keep our varbinary value including the "0x" prefix. In our case, the value will be 0x006E12933CBFB0469F79ABCC79A583-- - The third option is to use the value of "2" which will chop the "0x" prefix off of our varbinary value. In our case, the value will be 006E12933CBFB0469F79ABCC79A583-- Since we will want to convert this back to varbinary when reading this value from the XML data we will want the "0x" prefix, so we will want to change our code as follows: -- capture set in xml DECLARE @xml XML; SET @xml = (SELECT              CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),EncVal,1) AS EncVal             FROM @tbl AS MYTABLE             FOR XML AUTO, BINARY BASE64, ROOT('root')); Once again, with the inclusion of the SELECT @XML statement at the end of this portion of the code you will see the contents of the XML data in its raw format: <root>   <MYTABLE EncVal="0x006E12933CBFB0469F79ABCC79A583--" /> </root> Nice! We are now cooking with gas. To continue our scenario, we will want to parse the XML data into a data set so that we can glean our freshly captured cipher text. Once we have our cipher text snagged we will capture it into a variable so that it can be used during decryption: -- read back xml DECLARE @hdoc INT; DECLARE @EncVal NVARCHAR(MAX); EXEC sp_xml_preparedocument @hDoc OUTPUT, @xml; SELECT @EncVal = EncVal FROM OPENXML (@hdoc, '/root/MYTABLE') WITH ([EncVal] VARBINARY(MAX) '@EncVal'); EXEC sp_xml_removedocument @hDoc; Finally, the decryption of our cipher text using the DECRYPTBYKEYAUTOCERT method and the certificate utilized to perform the encryption earlier in our exercise: SELECT     CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),                     DecryptByKeyAutoCert                          (                            CERT_ID('AuditLogCert'),                            N'mypassword2010',                            @EncVal                           )                     ) EncVal; Ah yes, another hurdle presents itself! The decryption produced the value of NULL which in cryptography means that either you don't have permissions to decrypt the cipher text or something went wrong during the decryption process (ok, sometimes the value is actually NULL; but not in this case). As we see, the @EncVal variable is an nvarchar data type. The third parameter of the DECRYPTBYKEYAUTOCERT method requires a varbinary value. Therefore we will need to utilize our handy-dandy CONVERT method: SELECT     CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),                     DecryptByKeyAutoCert                          (                             CERT_ID('AuditLogCert'),                             N'mypassword2010',                             CONVERT(VARBINARY(MAX),@EncVal)                           )                     ) EncVal; Oh, almost. The result remains NULL despite our conversion to the varbinary data type. This is due to the creation of an varbinary value that does not reflect the actual value of our @EncVal variable; but rather a varbinary conversion of the variable itself. In this case, something like 0x3000780030003000360045003--. Considering the "style" parameter got us past XML challenge, we will want to consider its power for this challenge as well. Knowing that the value of "1" will provide us with the actual value including the "0x", we will opt to utilize that value in this case: SELECT     CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),                     DecryptByKeyAutoCert                          (                            CERT_ID('SymCert'),                            N'mypassword2010',                            CONVERT(VARBINARY(MAX),@EncVal,1)                           )                     ) EncVal; Bingo, we have success! We have discovered what happens with varbinary data when captured as XML data. We have figured out how to make this data useful post-XML-ification. Best of all we now have a choice in after-work parties now that our very happy client who depends on our XML based interface invites us for dinner in celebration. All thanks to the effective use of the style parameter.

  Hi all I have the following CTE. Its purpose is to provide unique Month/Year pairs. Later code will use the CTE to produce a concatenated string list of the Month/Year pairs. ;WITH tblStoredWillsInPeriod AS ( SELECT DISTINCT Kctc.GetMonthAndYearString(DateWillReceived) Month FROM Kctc.StoredWills WHERE DateWillReceived BETWEEN '2010/01/01' AND '2010/03/31' ORDER BY DateWillReceived ) I have omitted the implmementation of the GetMonthAndYearString function as it is trivial. Sadly, it seems T-SQL is always one step ahead. When I run this code, it tells me I'm not allowed to use ORDER BY in a CTE unless I also use TOP (or FOR XML, whatever that is.) If I use TOP, it tells me I can't use it with DISTINCT. Yup, T-SQL has all the answers. Can anyone think of a solution to this problem which is quicker than simply slashing my wrists? I understand that death from blood loss can be surprisingly lingering, and I have deadlines to meet. Thanks for your help. David

• Exception thrown while working with JTabbedPane

  I'm using a JTabbedPane in my application and I listen to its changes with ChangeListener so that I can know which tab is currently selected. So my stateChanged method is; public void stateChanged(ChangeEvent e) { currentPageIndex = jTabbedPane.getSelectedIndex(); } But while I'm adding new tabs to the JTabbedPane it throws an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException in the method above, I don't know why. Some suggested for a similar case that this is a bug http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4873983, but as you'll see some says the solution is to work with Swing from EventDispatchThread. What does it mean, do they mean the SwingUtilities.invokeLater thing? Can someone show me how I can modify my stateChanged method accordingly to avoid the exception?

  Flash overlay snags on underlying divs. What is the solution? I'm using Shadowbox to overlay a Flash file on my page, but the movement within the Flash file causes it to break or "shear" where the movie comes across the divs in the HTML hidden below. The screenshot shows it far better than I could explain ;) If you move the mouse, or tap the keyboard to "focus" the screen back on the Flash it all works seamlessly.   What is the best way to get a log of commits on a branch since the time it was branched from the current branch? My solution so far is: git log $(git merge-base HEAD branch)..branch The documentation for git-diff indicates that "git diff A...B" is equivalent to "git diff $(git-merge-base A B) B". On the other hand, the documentation for git-rev-parse indicates that "r1...r2" is defined as "r1 r2 --not $(git merge-base --all r1 r2)". Why are these different? Note that "git diff HEAD...branch" gives me the diffs I want, but the corresponding git log command gives me more than what I want. In pictures, suppose this: x---y---z---branch / ---a---b---c---d---e---HEAD I would like to get a log containing commits x, y, z. "git diff HEAD...branch" gives these commits. However, "git log HEAD...branch" gives x, y, z, c, d, e.

  Is there a way to append something to the query string with no value set? I would like to see this kind of URL being generated: http://local/things?magic. What I'm looking for is when the user goes to http://local/other?magic then every URL in the generated page would contain magic in the end. Following code is almost a solution but it gives me http://local/things?magic=.   From a Java program, I need to launch the default browser on a local HTML file, pointed to an anchor inside the file. In Java SE 6, the java.awt.Desktop.browse method will open the file, but will not honor the anchor, so something like the following opens the file at the top, but does not page the browser to the anchor: Desktop.getDesktop("file:///C:/foo/bar.html#anchor"); Sun says here http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6477862 that anchors are not supported in the file URI protocol. Does anyone have a better answer? I can use Java SE 6. I would be OK with a Windows only solution.

• Fluent NHib causing visual studio 2010 hanging at runtime

  Just installed and migrated a 2008 solution on Vista ultimate 64 and .net 4.0. Everything builds and tests run surprisingly well but I got the hang description below while trying to run the app under SQLite. It turns out that the hang has got something to do when the call is made for FNH to build the session factory during a run, the only feedback I get is that the database wasn't configure properly without any inner exception. The strange part is that the exact code works perfectly under tests. Any clues? Description: A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.   i would like to initialize database the first time the server is started, that involve calling a class method. Given the class name is: Product At first i put an .rb file config\initializers\init.rb as it gets automatically called. Everything works ok, until the database is deleted, and i am trying to do rake db:migrate. rake db:migrate fails saying that cannot find 'product' table. inside init.rb = Product.populate_db The solution i came up is: I took out init.rb do rake db:migrate put back init.rb run the server. My rails application is mainly for reporting and the data is seeded from other application, so i have to do the above step everyday Is there a better way to do the initialization?

• Is it possible to have CommandManager requery only specific WPF command instead of all?

  I'm trying to implement a highly responsive UI for my MVVM application, so I've chosen to have all command handlers automatically execute in a BackgroundWorker so they don't block the UI. But at the same time, I don't want the user to be able to execute the same command while it is still executing in the background. The solution seems obvious: When Executed handler is invoked, have the CanExecute handler return false Start the BackgroundWorker async When BackgroundWorker finishes, have the CanExecute handler return true again. Problem is, I need to notify WPF after step 1 and again after step 3 that CanExecute has changed and that it should be required. I know I can do it by calling CommandManager.InvalidateRequerySuggested, but that causes CanExecute handlers of all other commands to be requeried as well. Having a lot of commands, that's not good. Is there a way to ask for requery of a specific command - i.e. the one that is currently being executed? TIA

  C#, visual studio 2005 I have several 3rd party activeX control. I need to use them in my .net windows application. These controls are graphical. I created a wrapper with aximp.exe for them. But it seems that something wrong. When I call some methods of wrapped activeX control == targetinvocativeexception occured. Or visual studio writes "you are attempting to write or read protected memory". I know that something wrong. But what is exactly wrong - i don't know. I find out about method CreateControl() or STAthread attribute. but it doesn't help me. What is the common problem and common solution for my type of problem ? These activex control from big and trusted company, other developers work with them.
