• How to edit the Boot Graphics Resource Table / Edit windows 8 BOOT LOGO?

  I want to edit the screen which is displayed when windows 8 (starts) loads (/loading). As for now it has the Toshiba logo, I want my custom logo or the windows default logo. I have found that UEFI has something called "Boot Graphics Resource Table" and that it overides the default logo if there is a image present (source) How can I edit the logo stored in UEFI firmware or Boot Graphics Resource Table? if it's in the "bootres.dll", which does UEFI use? My disk (spread across a few system/usefi/windows/etc partitions) has around twenty bootres.dlls. The bootres.dll is signed by Microsoft, but I don't have to worry because I can sign the file I edit myself with my own certificate.

• Should sanity be a property of a programmer or a program?

  I design and implement languages, that can range from object notations to markup languages. In many cases I have considered restrictions in favor of sanity (common knowledge), like in the case of control characters in identifiers. There are two consequences to consider before doing this: It takes extra computation It narrows liberty I'm interested to learn how developers think of decisions like this. As you may know Microsoft C# is very open on the contrary. If you really want to prefix your integer as Long with 'l' instead of 'L' and so risk other developers of confusing '1' and 'l', no problem. If you want to name your variables in non-latin script so they will contrast with C#'s latin keywords, no problem. Or if you want to distribute a string over multiple lines and so break a series of indentation, no problem. It is cheap to ensure consistency with restrictions and this makes it tempting to implement. But in the case of disallowing non-latin characters (concerning the second example), it means a discredit to Unicode, because one would not take full advantage of its capacity.

• Two Network Adapters on Hyper-V Host - Best way to configure?

  I have two physical network adapters installed in my Hyper-V host. I want one to be dedicated to the host, and the other to provide external network services to the VMs. Would the appropriate configuration be as such: Leave the first physical network adapter alone, assigning it the host IP, but not using it to create any Virtual Netorks For the second physical adapter, I would create an External Network, along with a Microsoft Virtual Switch, and use that to provide network services to the VMs. Each virtual NIC for the VM would be associated with that External Network. A static IP would be assigned to this adapter, and each VM would be assigned a static IP as well. The above seems reasonable to me, but I'm not sure if it's correct. Does anyone have any thoughts? • Cannot install Java 7 update 9 32-bit on Win 7 64

  As there were several versons of Java on my laptop, I decided to uninstall them all and reinstall only the current version. I uninstalled all 64-bit and 32-bit versions using Revo Uninstaller. After dowloading the current versions, when attempting to install them, I get a message that both the 64-bit and 32-bit versions cannot be installed as they are already installed. Both the Windows 7 Programs and Features and Revo show no Java installed at al. I then tried the Microsoft Fixit for install and uninstall issues (KB 2438651). I was then able to install the 64-bit version, but continued to have the issue with the 32-bit version. I ran CCleaner, Glary Utilities and Auslogics Registry Cleaner, and noticed Java keys that were to be uninstalled. After cleaning the registry, I attemped to install the 32-bit version of Java once more, to no avail. Any suggestions on how to rectify this problem? Thank you for any guidance you can provide.

  I am using time freeze program but I can not save my free vpn user name and pasword. Since user name and pasword changed daily I have to unfreeze change pasword then freeze again. In the time freeze there is option to excusing file and folder. if I find the location of vpn setting that save the user name and pasword, I will have ability to use without unfreezing and re freezing. There is a location with path %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk\ that contain vpn configurations except user name and password. I need the location that store user name and password.

• Hyper-v back-up

  We are trying to decide a good backup strategy for our new Hyper-V setup. We have 3 VMs on Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V host. We installed Symantec BackupExec 2010 on the host and have the Hyper-V Agent installed. We would like to perform a full backup at night to tape, and an incremental twice a day to a daily tape. Our environment needs constant protection for our database (Microsoft Access). Any thoughts? Should I be looking at different software?

  Is there a way to modify the bat file from this post here: How do I set the desktop background on Windows from a script? so that it will randomly select 1 background image from a folder containing multiple images??? AND I would also like the background to randomly change to one of the backgrounds randomly contained in the same folder. • Can Remote Desktop connect only 2 monitors when the client has 3 or 4 monitors connected?

  I have three monitors (all 1920x1200) connected to my desktop and I would like to RDP into another computer (running Windows Server 2003) and use only two of my three monitors. The main monitor is used for notification from the LAN like email, build status, etc. I've tried modifying the .rdp file to have a higher resolution (i.e. 3840x1200 ) which sort of works but the bits per pixel goes down to 8 and you have to manually resize the window which means that you need to change it to around 3840x1150. If I supply /span to the commandline it gives me a bit more than 3840 spanned across the three monitors (is there perhaps a limitation of say 4096 for the maximum resolution?). WORKAROUND: Connect twice to the same computer. • If a SQL Server Replication Distributor and Subscriber are on the same server, should a PUSH or PULL subsciption be used?

  Thanks in advance for any help. I'm setting up a new Microsoft SQL Server replication and I have the Distributor and Subscriber running on the same server. The Publisher is on a remote server (as it is a production database and MS recommends that for high volumes, the Distributor should be remote). I don't know much about the inner workings of PUSH vs PULL subscriptions, but my gut tells me that a PUSH subscription would be less resource intensive because (1) the Distributor is already remote, so this shouldn't negatively effect the Publisher and (2) pushing the transactions from the Distributor to the Subscriber is more efficient than the Subscriber polling the Distribution database. Does any one have any resources or insight into PUSH vs PULL which would recommend one over the other? Is there really going to be that big of a difference in performance / reliability / security?

• RDP windows key jamming

  There is a known bug in RDP; if you lock the screen while connected to a computer the computer you are connected to will have its windows key jammed. There are a few work arounds that involve hammering the windows key and re-locking the screen but this isn't a bug I want to put up with anymore. Microsoft has said they wont fix this bug because it's XP specific and they are only working on security bugs now because XP is at end of life. Is there any way I can fix this or am I just going to have to find an alternative remote desktop software.

• Black Screen on Startup even after running chkdsk

  I started an old (Dell Inspiron 2200) the startup goes all the way to Microsoft Windows XP Logo then I get a black screen. I am still able to move the cursor but that is about it. I tried running Recovery console (from CD) with chkdsk command. First time it said they were errors. I decided to do a fixboot and see if the errors went away. They did. Restarted and still no luck. If there are commands that I can call either from recovery console or elsewhere to further describe the problem please tell me and I will re-edit the question. srvtag:7XNSG81 Also what are my full range of options before wiping the hard-drive (if that is even the problem) I want to exhaust all options before replacing hardware.

• Recently used contacts getting corrupted Outlook 2010

  We are using Microsoft's Identity Integration Feature Pack to sync contacts between two separate domains at two separate branches of our company. Recently we have run into an issue with a few of the contacts being pulled/synced from this remote location. When people in our organizaion are sending emails to certain contacts that are being synced from the remote location, the message delivery fails. After looking into the issue we are seeing that this failure is the result of the email being sent to some obscure email address rather than the correct email address. For example, the email address is getting changed to IMCEAEX_O=NT5_ou=44C5AE1BBEE0ED499F607407769311BB_cn=2F31FA0CA187314FA8D6A99BEFC52C36@domain.com rather than [email protected] Clearing the recently used contact list seems to solve the issue, but it does not solve the underlying problem. Because this issue is starting to happen to several different people I would like to solve the underlying cause. Does anyone have any input on how to start troubleshooting this issue? Also, we are using Exchange 2010. Thank you for taking the time to look at this.

• User mapping lost after manual failover

  I have two Microsoft SQL Server instances set up for mirroring each with a number of databases. There are a number of logins and for each database one or more user/login mappings. When I restore a backup of database I always have to redo the login/user mappings. I understand this because the logins are per database server. So after restoring the databases on the pricipal I redid the login/user mappings. This was not possible for the mirror because the databases were 'restoring'. After a manual failover I could not use the databases because user credentials were missing. This was not unexpected, so I did the login/user mapping again. I did a manual failover again to make the initial pricipal, which was now the mirror, principal again. To my surprise I could not use the databases because the login/user mappings were gone. Is this the expected behaviour?

• &ldquo;Why do transactional messages all have the same priority?&rdquo;

  I answered this question on the MSMQ forum on MSDN and thought it worth sharing here. The poster wanted to know why all transactional messages have a fixed priority of zero (instead of 0 through 7). They wanted the guaranteed delivery of messages to a queue but wanted to assign different levels of priority. Some aspects of MSMQ were defined way back in the last century and this is one of them. If I remember right, the reason was to avoid the following scenario: You have a single transaction of 3 messages (a, b and c) with priorities 5, 3 and 4 respectively. The messages are sent in order a,b,c The messages arrive in the queue and are arranged in order a,c,b to reflect priority order This breaks the guaranteed order part of the transaction.  I know that very few people send more than one message in a transaction but that is a scenario that MSMQ has to be able to handle; for the majority, including yourself, this scenario is irrelevant which is why you are surprised by the absence of transactional priorities. The options, therefore, available to the Microsoft developers were to: Implement code that allowed you to send messages with variable priority as long as any messages within the same transaction were the same priority, or Define a set priority for all transactional messages As you can understand, option 1 would be a complicated arrangement with all the necessary enforcement, error handling, user education and documentation, etc. Sure, it would have been possible to implement option 1 but I expect the product group decided to invest the development time in some other aspect of MSMQ. Now, with five versions out there, it would be confusing to change how the product operates, in addition to potentially breaking exisiting systems that have been working fine for years. So, balancing cost and risk against customer demand, I would not expect this feature to ever change.

• Do there exist programming languages where a variable can truly know its own name?

  In PHP and Python one can iterate over the local variables and, if there is only once choice where the value matches, you could say that you know what the variable's name is, but this does not always work. Machine code does not have variable names. C compiles to assembly and does not have any native reflection capabilities, so it would not know it's name. (Edit: per Anton's answer the pre-processor can know the variable's name). Do there exist programming languages where a variable would know it's name? It gets tricky if you do something like b = a and b does not become a copy of a but a reference to the same place. EDIT: Why in the world would you want this? I can think of one example: error checking that can survive automatic refactoring. Consider this C# snippet: private void CheckEnumStr(string paramName, string paramValue) { if (paramName != "pony" && paramName != "horse") { string exceptionMessage = String.Format( "Unexpected value '{0}' of the parameter named '{1}'.", paramValue, paramName); throw new ArgumentException(exceptionMessage); } } ... CheckEnumStr("a", a); // Var 'a' does not know its name - this will not survive naive auto-refactoring There are other libraries provided by Microsoft and others that allow to check for errors (sorry the names have escaped me). I have seen one library which with the help of closures/lambdas can accomplish error checking that can survive refactoring, but it does not feel idiomatic. This would be one reason why I might want a language where a variable knows its name.

• Windows xp keeps rebooting itself every morning at 8am?

  Hi, I've got windows xp sp3. It seems to restart itself every morning at 8am (judging by the windows logs, I can see all apps log a startup at 8am every day). Whenever I get to the machine in the morning (around 9 am) I see it's rebooted. I've checked that automatic updates are off, and that the power management settings are set to "always on". I'm not sure what else could be causing the machine to reboot, not sure where to start looking. Any ideas? • Best Wiki Software For Product Support

  Good day, I am looking for a wiki system which we are going to use at work for a form of product support. We manufacture multiple devices and now i want to make a wiki which contains all sorts of relevant and helpful information on that product which the users can look at before trying to contact us for support? Now immediately the 1st option that comes to my mind in Media wiki but I dont just want to jump on the band wagon. I thought I would ask around first. It should preferable be free. But obviously if its really worth paying for then thats not the end of the world. And the uploading of content and media is not of much importance as the end users will simply be reading the information which the company has published. Another nice to have but is not critical is if it where to run on asp.net as we have Microsoft server running anyway.

  One of the new features of Silverlight 4 is the new PathListBox Control. This control is basically a Listbox control witch takes the layout of a shape that you want, so we can represent our data as we want without limits.   So we are ready to open the new Microsoft Blend 4 Beta. First, we going to create a new Silverlight Data Driven Application (MVVM) project.   Open the main view (MainView.xaml), you can find it in Views folder, i look for the new control.   Once you add the PathListbox Control to the main layout of the MainView.xaml, we will add a Line Shape. Now, we are in the main step. Set the LayoutPaths property of the PathListbox control with the line shape that is just created.   The final step is set the ItemsSource property of the PathListbox control. We are going to use a mock object collection from the main view model. I have created the object collection on the main view model created by the Silverlight MVVM project template.   This is the result that we can improve with some animations. This a basic basic use of the PathListbox but using your imagination you can do very cool things.

  Regarding BioPerl installation in Windows XP, I have installed Active Perl in Windows XP, and by using Perl Package Manager I have installed the BioPerl Repositories too. But I am not able to run the BioPerl yet. While running the BioPerl program in emacs it is showing the following error: make -k 'make' is not recognized as internal or external command, operable program or batch file I have tried to install Nmake for Windows but this error is showing. No webpage was found for the web address: http://download.microsoft.com/download/vc15/patch/1.52/w95/en-us/nmake15.exe How could this be resolved?

• Windows 7 Desktop background picture in Group Policy displaying black - XP working correctly

  We want everyone on the Windows Domain to have the same desktop background. This is set up in a Group Policy. This works great in Windows XP but the Windows 7 machines display a black background. I have re-created the Group Policy, done various tests with different types and sizes of files Enabling and Disabling Active Desktop. I have researched and tried some options and patches from Microsoft as well. Any idea what I can try or even how to determine the problem?

• Windows 7 Mapped Network Drive Multiplying to Create Duplicates all the way to Z:

  A strange issue came in today from some users. At least two Windows 7 x64 boxes that have duplicate mappings of a network drive. The drive is not mapped with a log in script, but done manual through "Map Network Drive". Everything has been fine for months, but all of the sudden, Explorer looks like this: Files (\\fileServerPath) (S:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (T:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (U:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (V:) Files (\\otherServerPath) (W:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (X:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (Y:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (Z:) There are some other networks drives mixed in there that did not duplicate. The drive is normally mapped to S:\, but it decided to make its way to Z:. What is going on here? • IIS7 application pool spawning worker processes

  IIS7 ASP.net 2.0 Number of worker processes growing out of control in single app pool. Appear to keep spawning upwards. Monitoring the w3wp.exe process i can see "current connections" to web service sometimes spawn out of control but not always , only worker processes are consistently growing when this issue occurs. Number of worker processes normally 0 - 20 , when spawning they can reach 1000 + This was deployed in: %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\aspnet.config maxConcurrentRequestsPerCPU="50000" maxConcurrentThreadsPerCPU="0" requestQueueLimit="50000" But issue still occurs. Have tried running PROCDUMP on the exe process but the mini dump isnt a great help. I understand this is 99% probable an app issue , what i need help with is tracking it down. Thank you for any tips. • Adding Command-Line Switches To Windows Shortcuts

  Is there a way to, in general, create a Windows shortcut to a file and instruct Windows to pass certain switches to the application before passing the filename? For example: I have an Excel file, abc.xlsx. If I want to create a shortcut to open this file read-only, I would change the target to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /r abc.xlsx, but this fails when another person on my network opens the shortcut and their EXCEL.EXE is not in that same folder. Surely there's a way to tell Windows to pass the /r switch without supplying the path/filename of the application that is supposed to open the file?

• Cannot Copy Pictures w/ text or w/o from web pages anymore word in office starter 2010

  This is something new. I had been able to copy text and pictures from websites into a microsoft word office starter 2010. I have gone into advanced settings to no avail. I have verified that under paste special html is selected. I have reviewed the help sections and questions and they all tell me to select html under paste special but again it isn't working either. Also I used to have 3 formatting options under paste and am now only having two options. I did have a problem with my computer last night and I am wondering if something re-set itself..will you help?
