• Algorithm for analyzing text of words

  I want an algorithm which would create all possible phrases in a block of text. For example, in the text: "My username is click upvote. I have 4k rep on stackoverflow" It would create the following combinations: "My username" "My Username is" "username is click" "is click" "is click upvote" "click upvote" "i have" "i have 4k" "have 4k" .. You get the idea. Basically the point is to get all possible combinations of 'phrases' out of a sentence. Any thoughts for how to best implement this?

• Comparison of ASP.Net Reporting Solutions

  This week my team spent way too much time trying to do simple things in reporting services, and I've decided to start evaluating other options. I know there are some good options out there now that aren't too expensive. I've heard that Telerik, ActiveReports, and a few others are widely used. I was hoping to get some first hand accounts regarding reporting tools that you've used. Specifically, I definitely want to hear your thoughts about: Pain points and gotchas you ran into. Ease of use for report design. It's a little bizarre to me that Access still seems to hold the throne in this area! What's your favorite tool? Anything I've missed that seems important to you. • ActionScript rotated sprite's startDrag bounds

• Implementing google dashboard type interface in asp.net

  I'm looking at implementing a Google IG type dashboard in a .net app. There are a number of options I've found to do this, and i'm trying to establish what is going to be the best to use, in terms of speed, versatility etc. So far the options I am looking at are either to use asp.net webparts and .net Ajax, this would make it quicker to build, but I'm concerned this is going to make the application bulky and slow, or using JQuery, and either .net MVC or Webforms, to custom build an interface. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the best option may be, or any options I may have missed? All I want to do here is to allow users to customise a dashboard with a number of components (which will be user controls). I do also have access to Telerik controls, but I'm not sure if they would be any use here.

• Jdeveloper vs java/j2ee/js+extjs ?

  Hi All, i am new to the web development environment, having came from a unix/c environment. i've been recently asked to create a web app, which i thought would require postgresql, java/j2ee, and javascript for the client interface. as i had wanted a nicer gui, i've been reading up on extjs, which looks really nice to me. a colleague mentioned that the time needed time needed to learn all these various pieces is time consuming, and Jdeveloper seems to provide most of what we'd need (i was shown a demo, which appears to be able to generate some nice web interfaces). what are the pros and cons with the different approaches ? some i can think of: - jdeveloper is an integrated ide, which creates UI easily, tightly integrated with database. (pro) - jdeveloper will be heavier? (con) - wizard generated code may be harder to refactor ? • Java 1.4 to Java 6 migration

  Hi, I have some enterprise apps running on Java 1.4. They mostly invoke Stored Proces on DB, Parse XML files (Not too large files, at the most few megs), read/write from/to disk. We have a requirement where now we have to migrate these apps to Java 6(No code changes to be done at all). My questions: If I dont recompile my apps under Java 6 and just run them with it, will it work fine (I know they 'should'). But if somebody thinks other way round, could you kindly share your thoughts please? More important question is - Will it have any perfomance impact?. As in, App compiled on 1.4 and running on 1.6 vs App compiled and running on 1.6. Is 1.6 gonna do any bytecode optimization for the same old peace of code compared to 1.4? Many Thanks js

How does one kill the kids? My first thought is to use atexit to kill all the workers, likeso: with daemon.DaemonContext(): workers = list() for i in xrange(3): workers.append(Worker(q)) @atexit.register def kill_the_children(): for w in workers: w.terminate() while True: # let the Workers do their thing q.put(_something_we_wait_for()) However, the children of daemons are tricky things to handle, and I'd be obliged for thoughts and input on how this ought to be done. • WebBrowser control not submitting form, IE 7 works

  We are using a WebBrowser control in our win forms application which is running in terminal services. IE 7 is the browser that is installed for the session. We are using WebForms to generate the web pages. If we try and submit a web page in the WebBrowser control it does not work. The submit button does not push down. If we try and submit a web page in IE 7 that is installed on the same machine it works as expected. This is only an issue for one person. The WebBrowser control is working for other users. Any thoughts on how I can debug why the submit button is not submitting for the WebBrowser control? Thanks in advance.

  Hi, I have a shell script which is currently running and was running from past 8 hours. It will complete only by tomorrow evening. At the end of the program, it will print 2 million words to standard output. I am running the program on the screen. I forgot to redirect the output to a file. I know I won't be able to copy the data from the window. Is there a way to output the command to a file. I don't want to restart the program. Any thoughts?? Thank you. Bala

• Reference DLLs not loading in Visual Studio 2010

  I'm working on a C# 4.0 project in VS2010 and needed to use some older DLLs containing controls that were created in C# 3.5 on VS2008. When I first add the DLLs to the references, I was able to see the namespace via intellisense and create an instance of one of the controls, but when I go to build, it gives me the following error: The type or namespace name 'BCA' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) And I do have a using directive for that namespace already, which is now underlined in red, showing that VS cannot find it. And now, intellisense won't pick up that namespace at all. I even tried added the controls to the toolbox (which worked) but then when I drag them to the GUI, it says that it cannot locate the DLL reference, even though it obviously knows where it is. I even tried changing the target framework to 3.5, but still with the same results. Any thoughts as to why this could be happening?

• Django URL resolving infrastructure stops working

  We recently launched a new Django-powered website, and we are experiencing the oddest bug: The site is running under Apache with mod_fastcgi. Everything works fine for a while, and then the URL tag and reverse() functionality stops working. Instead of returning the expected URL, they return "". We haven't noticed anything in Apache's log file; there are no errors being generated by Django. And (the kicker) the problem only occurs in production mode; we can't reproduce it when DEBUG=True. Any thoughts on where we should be looking for the problem?

• Transparent PNG menu item backgrounds in IE6 with rollovers

  Hi I have been trying to do this for what feels like all my life I have a list menu with block display links, each link has a sliding doors png background image. I have used this javascript (http://www.ideashower.com/our_solutions/png-hover/) to implement the alphaimageloader fix for ie6 using a transparent gif. When I test it for the first time it works but if I click to a different page and then click back it doesn't work anymore - the menu completely disappears, I can get it to work again by duplicating the transparent gif and changing it's name, but again if I go to another page and then come back to it, it stops working and the menu dissappears. Is this a server caching issue or something like that. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated! Thanks

  I want to be able to provide a button to my users to just print a particular portion of my dojo/dijit application. There seems to be a general lack of documentation and examples when it comes to printing. For example, I have a specific dijit.layout.ContentPane that contains the content that I would like to print, but I wouldn't want to print the rest of the document. I have seen some pure JavaScript examples on the web where the node.innerHTML is read into a "hidden" iframe and then printed from there. I suspect that would work, but I was wondering if there was a more dojo centric approach to printing. Any thoughts?

• Use sed to replace first 8 and last 4 pipes on every line in a file

  Here's the situation, I have a text file that is pipe-delimited and one of fields contains pipe characters. I already have a sed script that will change it to be tab-delimited, but the problem is it's terribly slow. It will replace the first occurrence of a pipe 8 times, then replace the last occurrence of a pipe 4 times. I'm hoping there's a quicker way to do what I need. Any thoughts would be appreciated. • How to load View from NIB into another NIB?

  I have two NIB's ParentViewController.xib ChildViewController.xib ParentViewController.xib contains a UIView and a UIViewController. ChildViewController.xib contains a UIButton I want ChildViewController.xib to load in the ParentViewController.xib's UIView I have done the following: Created @property for UIView in ParentViewController Connected File's Owner to UIView in ParentViewController Set UIViewController in ParentViewController's NIB Name property to ChildViewController in Interface Builder Set ChildViewController view property to UIView in ParentViewController I was hoping this would load ChildViewController into my UIView in ParentViewController but no luck. I did get the following warning, which could be the culprit: 'View Controller (Child View)' has both its 'NIB Name' property set and its 'view' outlet connected. This configuration is not supported. I also have added additional code in ParentViewController's viewDidLoad(): - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; ChildViewController *childViewController = [[ChildViewController alloc]initWithNibName:@"ChildViewController" bundle:nil]; childViewController.view = self.myView; } Any thoughts on why ChildViewController does not load in the UIView of ParentViewController?

• OpenGL es 2.0 Read depth buffer

  Hi! As far as i know, we can't read the Z(depth) value in OpenGL ES 2.0. So I am wondering how we can get the 3D world coordinates from a point on the 2D screen? Actually I have some random thoughts might work. Since we can read the RGBA value by using glReadPixels, how about we duplicate the depth buffer and store it in a color buffer(say ColorforDepth). Of course there need to be some nice convention so that we don't lose any information of the depth buffer. And then when we need a point's world coordinates , we attach this ColorforDepth color buffer to the framebuffer and then render it. So when we use glReadPixels to read the depth information at this frame. However, this will lead to 1 frame flash since the colorbuffer is a weird buffer translated from the depth buffer. I am still wondering if there is some standard way to get the depth in OpenGL es 2.0? Thx in advance!:)

• XAML Serialization object not using asp.net shadow copy

  Hi, I'm having a problem where i use the XAML serializer / deserializer for a configuration type file that i have. The problem that i'm getting, is that the XAML serializer is returning objects from the assembly in the /Bin directory, while the rest of the web application is using assembly's stored in the ..../Temporary Files/.. directory. Is there any way to prevent this from happening? Is this a bug in the XAML serializer / assembly loading routines? Every time i compile i need to stop and start the asp.net application so the shadow copy and the bin are exactly the same file. Even when not making a change to the dll and recompiling still causes the problem. Any thoughts on how to get around this problem? Currently i've tried turning shadow copy off, but then i have the same problem of needing to shut down / start up the web app every time i compile. Help!

  I am doing profiling of my Java application and found some interesting statistics for a jdbc PreparedStatement call: Given below is the environment details: Database: Sybase SQL Anywhere 10.0.1 Driver: com.sybase.jdbc3.jdbc.SybDriver connection pool: c3p0 JRE: 1.6.0_05 The code in question is given below: try { ps = conn.prepareStatement(sql); ps.setDouble(...); rs = ps.executeQuery(); ...... return xyz; } finally { try { if (rs != null) rs.close(); if (ps != null) ps.close(); } catch (SQLException sqlEx) { } } From JProfiler stats, I find that this particular resultspace.close() statement alone takes a large amount of time. It varies from 25 ms to 320s while for other code blocks which are of identical in nature, i find that this takes close to 20 microseconds. Just to be sure, I ran this performance test multiple times and confirmed this data. I am puzzled by this behaviour - Thoughts?

• linq2sql - where to enlist transaction (repository or bll)?

  My app uses a business layer which calls a repository which uses linq to sql. I have an Item class that has an enum type property and an ItemDetail property. I need to implement a delete method that: (1) always delete the Item (2) if the item.type is XYZ and the ItemDetail is not null, delete the ItemDetail as well. My question is where should this logic be housed? If I have it in my business logic which I would prefer, this involves two separate repository calls, each of which uses a separate datacontext. I would have to wrap both calls is a System.Transaction which (in sql 2005) get promoted to a distributed transaction which is not ideal. I can move it all to a single repository call and the transaction will be handled implicitly by the datacontext but feel that this is really business logic so does not belong in the repository. • Using terminal vs KDE in linux?

  Hi Im used to using nautilus within centos but have recently just got a VPS and quickly realising that using a KDE is unacceptable in this environment. Although I do find it so much quicker doing things like folder permissions in KDE rather than typing it all out in the terminal? Everyone I speak to says, use the terminal and I should learn this way as opposed to using the KDE, but theres certain things I just dont get How is it possible to make quick changes to scripts and viewing them in a browser etc , without a mouse or using KDE? and only using a terminal?? I am wondering how to develop websites just using the terminal??? How can it be quicker to type out/view permissions etc in the terminal when its instant and just a few clicks in the KDE? Any thoughts are much appreciated. I would love to understand the benefits but just cant seem to see them right now. Cheers Ke.

• audioPlayerDidFinishPlaying not being called during scrolling UITableView

  One of my views is a UITableView which acts as the delegate for an AVAudioPlayer and this table essentially plays sounds when you select a certain row with options to repeat the sound after its finished playing. However, I noticed that if I select a cell with repeat ON for a certain sound and then scroll through the UITableView to select a different sound, it will not call audioPlayerDidFinishPlaying (and therefore not repeat) until after scrolling has stopped. As soon as I stop scrolling, it repeats just fine. Or if I don't scroll at all, it repeats just fine. What could be happening during scrolling that the UITableView is no longer acting as the delegate and calling audioPlayerDidFinishPlaying? Any thoughts?

  I'm using the Uploadify jQuery control for client-side uploads. I think my IIS 7 configuration has issues with it. The uploadify POST immediately returns a HTTP 1.1 302 Found, back to my login page. I've tried to allow anonymous access to the uploading section(subfolder) plus the page(script) that processes the image in the web.config, using the location node(configuration ... location). Seems like the Uploadify post is immediately blocked. Again, this worked fine just using Visual Studio 2008, but when I run the site on the same machine I get the redirect. Your thoughts/ideas are very welcomed!

• How to Get JSF 2.0 Working with Eclipse 3.5 and JBoss 5.1

  I am running Eclipse 3.5 and JBoss 5.1. I want to create a JSF 2.0 project. I heard here that the Eclipse JBoss Tools plugin version 3.1 (available here) could do this for me. I have installed the plugin. However, if I go to the Project Facets properties page for a Dynamic Web Project, I only see Facets for JavaServer Faces 1.1 and 1.2. My Java facet is set at 6.0, and my Dynamic Web Module to 2.5. In the Targeted Runtimes properties page, I see that I am targeting the JBoss 5.1 Runtime. I understand that Eclipse Helios will be here next week, but I'm curious if its possible to get JSF 2.0 working with 3.5. Any thoughts?

• Need advice on speeding up tableViewCell photo loading performance

  I have around 20 tableview cells that each contain a number (2-5) thumbnail sized pictures (they are VERY small Facebook profile pictures, ex. http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-sf2p/hs254.snc3/23133_201668_2989_q.jpg). Each picture is an UIImageView added to the cell's contentview. Scrolling performance is poor, and measuring the draw time I've found the UIImage rendering is the bottleneck. I've researched/thought of some solutions but as I am new to iphone development I am not sure which strategy to pursue: preload all the images and retrieve them from disk instead of URL when drawing cells (I'm not sure if cell drawing will still be slow, so I want to hold off on the time investment here) Have the cells display a placeholder image from disk, while the picture is asynchronously loaded (this seems to be the best solution, but I'm currently not sure exactly how to do best do this) There's the fast drawing recommendation from Tweetie, but I don't know that will have much affect if it turns out my overhead is in network loading (http://blog.atebits.com/2008/12/fast-scrolling-in-tweetie-with-uitableview/) Thoughts/implementation advice?   I'm looking for a template engine. Requirements: Runs on a JVM. Java is good; Jython, JRuby and the like, too... Can be used outside of servlets (unlike JSP) Is flexible wrt. to where the templates are stored (JSP and a lot of people require the templates to be stored in the FS). It should provide a template loading interface which one can implement or something like that Easy inclusion of parameterized templates- I really like JSP's tag fragments Good docs, nice code, etc., the usual suspects I've looked at JSP- it's nearly perfect except for the servlet and filesystem coupling, Stringtemplate- I love the template syntax, but it fails on the filesystem coupling, the documentation is lacking and template groups and stuff are confusing, GXP, TAL, etc. Ideas, thoughts?
