• What does open source license (like GNU-GPL) mean?

  I am looking forward to use an open source product which has GNU-GPL like license and it says that if I use that product, I must share the source code of my application. I am slightly confused about it. I understand that Linux is available under GNU-GPL license as well. Does it mean ALL linux application are and has to be open source? Does it mean I can ask for the source code of complete Oracle DB from Oracle Corp (at least the part that runs on Linux)?

• portable way to deal with 64/32 bit time_t

  I have some code which is built both on Windows and Linux. Linux at this point is always 32bit but Windows is 32 and 64bit. Windows wants to have time_t be 64 bit and Linux still has it as 32 bit. I'm fine with that, except in some places time_t values are converted to strings. So when time_T is 32 bit it should be done with %d and when it is 64bit with %lld... what is the smart way to do this? Also: any ideas how I may find all places where time_t's are passed to printf-style functions to address this issue?

• C++: Platform indepentend game lib?

  Hi, I want to write a serious 2D game, and it would be nice if I have a version for Linux and one for Windows (and eventually OSX). Java is fantastic because of its platform independent. But Java is to slow to write a serious game. So, I thought to write it in C++. But C++ isn't very cross-platform friendly. I can find game libraries for Windows and libraries for Linux, but I'm searching one that I can use for both, by recompiling the source on a Windows platform and on a Linux platform. Are there engines for this or is this idea irrelevant? Isn't it that easy (recompiling)? Any advice and information about C++ libraries would be very very very appreciated!

• Perl array and hash manipulation using map

  I have the following test code use Data::Dumper; my $hash = { foo => 'bar', os => 'linux' }; my @keys = qw (foo os); my $extra = 'test'; my @final_array = (map {$hash->{$_}} @keys,$extra); print Dumper \@final_array; The output is $VAR1 = [ 'bar', 'linux', undef ]; Shouldn't the elements be "bar, linux, test"? Why is the last element undefined and how do I insert an element into @final_array? I know I can use the push function but is there a way to insert it on the same line as using the map command? Basically the manipulated array is meant to be used in an SQL command in the actual script and I want to avoid using extra variables before that and instead do something like: $sql->execute(map {$hash->{$_}} @keys,$extra);

  Hi, I have been working in Java for the past 4 years and I am currently switching over to Ruby. I am so excited about it and I feel good to finally get a hands on experience on a scripting language first time. The task assigned to me is to first pick a OS of my choice and setup a Ruby in it and study for 2 weeks. I have been developing applications in windows and Linux is not my cup of tea. Some part of me wants to try out Linux but I want to first convince myself whether OS really matters for Ruby development. If Linux does matter, which distribution can I start looking at? Please advise.

• View OS X Desktop on windows remotely at higher resolution then hosting machine

  I have a new macbook air 11, which I do some web based programming on, I have a windows box with a 1920x1200 display which I'd like to use to view the mac desktop and keep working at home when I can - taking advantage of the higher resolution screen and full sized keyboard/mouse. I don't think VNC or such is the answer I'm looking for as it would restrict the display to the airs 1366x768 - negating the main benefit more lines of text on screen. From some rudimentary googleing I think I'm after some sort of x-windows / x-11 remote display. But I'm not a Linux user and any discussion seems to be about linux os x or windows Linux setups. Can anyone provide a clear set of instructions on how to do this or an application that can do this.

• Viability of Apache (MPM Worker), FastCGI PHP 4/5.2/5.3, and MySQL 5

  My server will be hosting numerous PHP web applications ranging from Joomla, Drupal, and some legacy (read: PHP4) and other custom-built code inherited from clients. This will be a development machine used by a dozen or so web developers and issues like fluctuating loads or particularly high load expectations are not important. Now, my question: are there any concerns I should know about when using Apache w/ MPM Worker, PHP 4/PHP 5.2/PHP 5.3 (all via FastCGI), and MySQL 5 (with a query cache of 64MB)? I have not tested the various applications extensively and I have only recently learned how to install PHP and utilize it via FastCGI (rather than mod_php, which in this case seemed impossible (considering the multiple versions of PHP and the desire to use MPM Worker over MPM Prefork)). I have come to understand that there could be concerns regarding XCache and APC, namely non-thread-safety issues where data becomes corrupted and the capability to use MPM Worker becomes null and void. Is this a valid concern? I have been using my personal testing server (running Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04 in VirtualBox) which has 2GB of RAM available to it. • How to find process that's using 100% of CPU

  As i'm looking at htop and top i see that my processor usage is 100% allways. But i can not see any process that is using that much CPU. Htop shows me only 1-2 processes that use around 5% cpu time. Is there a way to find the processes that use that much cpu time? • Enabling mod_wsgi in Apache for a Django app on Gentoo

  I installed Apache, Django, and mod_wsgi on Gentoo using emerge (on Amazon EC2). I know that the mod_wsgi is configured in /etc/apache2/modules.d/70_mod_wsgi.conf: <IfDefine WSGI> LoadModule wsgi_module modules/mod_wsgi.so </IfDefine> # vim: ts=4 filetype=apache So in my /etc/conf.d/apache I added the WSGI module: APACHE2_OPTS="-D DEFAULT_VHOST -D INFO -D SSL -D SSL_DEFAULT_VHOST -D LANGUAGE -D WSGI" But when I try to list the loaded module, mod_wsgi isn't listed. root ~ # apache2 -M | grep wsgi Syntax OK I also know that mod_wsgi isn't loading properly because the Apache configuration file doesn't recognize WSGIScriptAlias. By the way for Django to work I need to include a custom Apache configuration file. Where should I insert the line below?   I develop a Vaadin project in Eclipse that I start through Tomcat 6 which gets started directly by Eclipse. Tomcat prints an enormous amount of log messages though on each start which makes it hard to see the output of my own Application. I have already replaced all log levels in tomcat6/conf/logging.properties by WARNING (e.g. java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler.level = WARNING) but I still get many INFO messages. How can I turn this off or restrict the log messages to WARNING? • Example: Communication between Activity and Service using Messaging

  I couldn't find any examples of how to send messages between an activity and a service, and spent far too many hours figuring this out. Here is an example project for others to reference. This example allows you to start or stop a service directly, and separately bind/unbind from the service. When the service is running, it increments a number at 10Hz. If the activity is bound to the service, it will display the current value. Data is transferred as an Integer and as a String so you can see how to do that two different ways. There are also buttons in the activity to send messages to the service (changes the increment-by value).   I am new to Android! I am having a problem getting this code to work... Basically I Go from one list activity to another and pass the text from a list item through the intent of the activity to the new list view, then retrieve that text in the new list activity and then preform a http request based on value of that list item. • Example: Communication between Activity and Service using Messaging

  I couldn't find any examples of how to send messages between an activity and a service, and spent far too many hours figuring this out. Here is an example project for others to reference. This example allows you to start or stop a service directly, and separately bind/unbind from the service. When the service is running, it increments a number at 10Hz. If the activity is bound to the service, it will display the current value. Data is transferred as an Integer and as a String so you can see how to do that two different ways. There are also buttons in the activity to send messages to the service (changes the increment-by value). So I create a Live USB of Ubuntu 14.04 with the help of the following link: How to make your own "Ubuntu LiveUSB" I created the Live USB successfully, but when I started my PC, i encountered an error message saying : Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! • Weird vps server issue

  I have an unmanaged linux vps Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot). I have LNMP installed. Also php-fpm php-apc, varnish, memcache. I have (or rather had) several live sites on it. under normal load the server uses ~700 mb memory. But since last night its using only 20mb~ memory and a lot of the services seems to be down (according to htop) I only see nginx working and mysql starts up and goes does every few minutes on a loop. • I have Ubuntu alongside Windows Vista and I cannot reboot Windows Vista

  I cannot get into Windows Vista .... I was working in Vista and then I restarted booted up Ubuntu and when I finished in Ubuntu I restarted this time in Vista and all I get is the microsoft box with the vertical stripes running interminably. I ran sudo update-grub this is the result of that command: generating grub.cfg found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-24-generic found initrd image: /boot/iniytd.img-3.2.0-24-generic found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-19-generic found linitrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-19-generic found windows recovery environment (loader) on /dev/sda1 skipping windows recovery environment (loader) on Wubi system found windows vista (loader) on /dev/sda2 skipping windows vista (loader) on wubi system I do have a backup of my Windows environment on an external hard drive and I can get to it through ubuntu but I am not sure if I can restore Windows Vista from Ubuntu or even if I need to. Thanks for any help.
