• "sr0" I/O read boot error in Xubuntu 12.10

  Just recently upgraded Xubuntu 12.10 after having installed 12.04 originally. Ever since that happened, any time I inserted a disk into my DVD/CD reader/writer I would end up getting a number of error messages from my DVD player/Audio player softer, typically with any of them either crashing or returning a GStreamer backend error. I then went into VLC and tried to run the stuff through there, but for some reason it won't read with the default devices. Instead I have to manually input sr0 into each of the /dev/ references and it will play just fine, until I exit out of the program, at which point I have to re-input everything. I have already installed all the media dependencies, both open source and restricted, through the software center. I just found this strange, as out of the box 12.04 there wasn't any problem what so ever. At this point, it could be that all my audio CD's are not in a format that is familiar with the OS (I've read in some places that EXTF4 has issues with this) but I don't see how that could be a problem when the above error messages even tested to see if it is EXT3 as well? I've tried my best to troubleshoot this up till now using existing topics, but it seems that this is a regular problem with a multitude of varying factors that incorporate into it, including but not limited to read/write problems with the format of the CD and right protection. Is there something integral that I am missing?

  I have good news! Microsoft has released the June 2010 Windows Azure Tools + SDK. These new tools extend Visual Studio (both VS 2010 & VS 2008) for Windows Azure development. With these tools you can create, configure, debug, build, run, and deploy scalable web apps on Windows Azure. At first glance what I see as some of the most interesting points of interest are the fact that Visual Studio 2010 RTM is fully supported as well as .NET 4 support. You can choose to build your apps with the .NET 3.5 or .NET 4 frameworks. Another area of interest that I’ll be digging into is the cloud storage explorer. It provides a read-only view of your Windows Azure tables and blob containers from within Visual Studio via the Server Explorer. I’m sure I’ll have more to say about the Windows Azure Tools as I dig deeper… Have a day. :-|

• How to mount an external HDD?

  I have Ubuntu Linux 12.04 version the latest right now.I want to mount an external HDD NTFS 1TB.I have followed many guides but still no success.The error I'm getting is this: Failed to read last sector (1953523119): Invalid argument HINTS: Either the volume is a RAID/LDM but it wasn't setup yet, or it was not setup correctly (e.g. by not using mdadm --build ...), or a wrong device is tried to be mounted, or the partition table is corrupt (partition is smaller than NTFS), or the NTFS boot sector is corrupt (NTFS size is not valid). Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Invalid argument The device '/dev/sdb1' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS. Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?   You should always disable the 8.3 name creation feature when installing WebCenter Content on a Windows platform. The installs will normally work without it disabled, but you will find the weird 8.3 file and directory names in all the config files. Disabling it can also improve performance. On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and above you can do it with this command: fsutil.exe behavior set disable8dot3 1 To make sure it is disabled you can run this command to check: fsutil.exe behavior query disable8dot3 If the 8.3 file name creation is disabled you will see the following output from the command: The registry state of NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation is 1 (Disable 8dot3 name creation on all volumes).   Apologies if the solution is obvious but I'm stumped! I want to launch byobu from within my Gnome 3 desktop environment on 12.04 but it's not working for me as yet. Here's what I have: created a windows list file ~/.byobu/windows.mrb then tried to launch byobu from within the gnome terminal with: $ BYOBU_WINDOWS=mrb byobu But it gives me the default windows list, NOT my windows list.   This tutorial will show you how to build a plug-in for Windows Live Writer. Windows Live Writer is a blogging tool that Microsoft provides for free. It includes an open API for .NET developers to create custom plug-ins. In this tutorial, I will show you how easy it is to build one. Open VS2008 or VS2010 and create a new project. Set the target framework to 2.0, Application Type to Class Library and give it a name. In this tutorial, we are going to create a plug-in that generates a twitter message with your blog post name and a TinyUrl link to the blog post.  It will do all of this automatically after you publish your post. Once, we have a new projected created. We need to setup the references. Add a reference to the WindowsLive.Writer.Api.dll located in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Writer\ folder, if you are using X64 version of Windows. You will also need to add a reference to System.Windows.Forms System.Web from the .NET tab as well. Once that is complete, add your “using” statements so that it looks like whats shown below: Live Writer Plug-In "Using" using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using WindowsLive.Writer.Api; using System.Web; Now, we are going to setup some build events to make it easier to test our custom class. Go into the Properties of your project and select Build Events, click edit the Post-build and copy/paste the following line: XCOPY /D /Y /R "$(TargetPath)" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Writer\Plugins\" Your screen should look like the one pictured below: Next, we are going to launch an external program on debug. • Deleted Partition Recovery

  Recently i was installing ubuntu 12.04 on my system. There were 4 partitions on my system and i selected one of the four partition for the installation and chose the option of re sizing the partition. Initially my partition was of size 100+GB and i created another partition out of it of size 15GB (EXT4). Now the moment i changed this partition structure my original partition got lost along with its data and i am left with 50GB partition and 50GB unallocated free space. Now the data that i have lost is meant a lot to me and i want to recover that data. So is there any way i can recover it ? And i haven't checked "format" option while resizing the partition.   if I run my notebook on battery mode, ubuntu spindown my hardrive every few seconds. How can I fix that? I have tried it with sudo hdparm -S 127 /dev/sda* but I am not able to disable the spindown and can´t find the reason for this "bug". Running Ubuntu 12.04 - Bug is since 12.04 Recent updates are installed, the problem is still recent. I can change the settings via. sudo hdparm -B 127 but if I change hdparm.conf, Ubuntu does not recognize it. /dev/sda { apm_battery=127 }

I would trust in this solution better than others: Can I run fsck or e2fsck when Linux file system is mounted?

• How to best convert a fully encrypted drive into a Virtual Machine?

  I have a Windows XP laptop that uses GuardianEdge's Encryption Plus to fully encrypt the drive from bootup. What I would like to do is install a much larger (unencrypted) hard drive with Windows 7 on it and turn this fully encrypted drive into a Virtual Machine that can be ran in either Virtualbox or VMWare on the Windows 7 host. I've read many howto's that talk about using an imaging tool like Acronis True Image to image the drive then passing that through VMWare's VCenter Converter to turn it into a format that VMWare can understand. Unfortunately this seems to all far apart when you are dealing with a fully encrypted drive because Acronis cannot recognize the file system and attempts to do a sector-by-sector copy of the entire hard drive. This is extremely wasteful since the drive is 120GB but the file system is only using 10GB of that. Even if I were OK with going with an inefficient 120GB sector-by-sector copy, I'm not sure that this would even work under VMWare or Virtualbox. Unfortunately, the Guardian Edge boot-time login comes up only after the hard drive has been selected as the boot device; preventing me from being able to decrypt the drive prior to booting an Acronis True Image CD so that it can recognize the underlying file system. I'm sure I'm not the first person to want to do this but I am having a heck of a time finding solutions to this problem. All suggested/answers welcomed. Thanks

  I have Ubuntu server - Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS and I can't figure out why my CD tray is opening all the time. I have looked into /var/log/auth.log, cron list and found nothing. The eject command closes tray and then it gets opened again. The server has a LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) setup and I can't afford to restart it now. How can I find out who or which program is popping the tray open? Which programs can cause this behavior?

• cant get ubuntu to work with windows 8

  ive been trying to dual boot Ubuntu with windows 8 but so far I haven't been able too. the laptop im using is a HP Pavilion g6-2240sa pre-installed with windows 8. ive made the bootbale USB with Ubuntu 12.10, it installs but when I restart the computer boot straight into windows, no grub boot options. I can get into Ubuntu once by doing an advanced restart and booting from the Ubuntu partition. I can use Ubuntu fine but once I restart or shutdown, I do the advanced restart again and the Ubuntu partition is now gone and I have to reinstall. i used this tutorial to install Ubuntu, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNCSbTyUzoM After i have to reinstall and still no grub boot menu, i used the boot repair to re-install it. once i rebooted the computer it went straight to windows again and the Ubuntu partition was gone. can i dual boot windows 8 and unbuntu 12.10 with the grub so i can pick what OS to boot into when the computer is starting, and without the partition going AWOL???? • Program To Cascade/Tile Windows

  I have perhaps ten or fifteen windows open. I'd like a program which automatically resizes all the windows and arranges them in columns and rows across the screen (a grid formation), automatically figuring out the largest size for the windows so that they still fit. This isn't an "Expose" type program - I want the windows to stay resized. I am using OpenBox to do my window management and am otherwise happy with it, I don't want to find a whole new window manager just to solve this problem. The program Tile is almost perfect, but it doesn't know how to lay the windows out in a grid formation. Any thoughts? Thanks!

  I introduce a CD-RW, maybe blank (I really don't know), and after a little movement inside the reader, the CD is ejected without any message at all. I would like to know what is going on and the reason why it is ejected. How can I know that in Natty. The CD reader is working OK because I can read other CD's. It only gave me problems writing from Natty, a few days ago, but with MacOS there was no problem.
