• from ggplot2 to OOo workflow?

  This is not really a programming question, but I try here none the less. I once used latex for my reports. But the people I work with needs to make small edits and do not have latex skillz. Openoffice is then the way to go. But saving ggplot images with dpi 100 makes for really ugly graphs. dpi = 600 is a no go (e.g. huge legend). So what to do? I currently save (still via ggsave) to eps - which openoffice can import. But performance is not good at all. Googling I found a bug for the poor eps performance in OOo, and also talk about a non-implemented svg feature. But none helps me right now. If you work with ggplot2 and OOo - What do you do? I have been unsuccesfull with pdf conversion for some reason.

• Formula for producing a CGRect for a UIScrollView, that displays a UIImage in scaled to fit way

  Hi I am loading in images with varying sizes and putting them in UIScrollViews, all the images are larger than the UIScrollView. The user can scroll and zoom as they please, but initially I would like for the image to be centered and scaled so the largest side of the image aligns with the edge of the scrollView, i.e. if the picture is in landscape I would like to size and scale it so that the left and right side goes all the way to the edge of the UIScrollVIew and vice versa I found a formula in a utility function in the Programming guide but it does not quite fit my needs. My approach is to use: CGrect initialPos = ? [self.scrollView zoomToRect:initialPos animated:YES]; I know the size of my scrollView and the size of my image, what I need to figure out is the scale and CGRect to apply to the scrollView to center and size my image. • Will GTK's pango and cairo work well in Cocoa and MFC applications.

  I'm writing a GUI program and decided to go native on all platforms. But for all the stuff i need to draw myself i would like to use the same drawing routines because font and unicode handling is so difficult and complex. Do you see any negative points in useing Pango/Cairo. Well on MacOSX i havent succeded installing Pango/Cairo yet. Looks like a bad Omen. I would also like to hear about the performance penality. The first time i looked at Pango i thought, yes thats the reason why Software is still getting despite better hardware.

• What should I learn to improve my Java skills ?

  Hello, I currently know Java SE and I want to learn something more 'enterprise'. I would like something more distributed (app server, server programming, web, content management system ...) but any suggestion is ok. There are many frameworks which I've heard: spring, hibernate, persistence, ejb, jsp, servlet, jsf, jboss, glassfish, ant etc etc etc etc. I'm very confused where to start. • Is ORM (Linq, Hibernate...) really that useful?

  I have been playing with some LINQ ORM (LINQ directly to SQL) and I have to admit I like its expressive powers . For small utility-like apps, It also works quite fast: dropping a SQL server on some surface and you're set to linq away. For larger apps however, the DAL never was that big of an issue to me to setup, nor maintain, and more often than not, once it was set, all the programming was not happening there anyway... My, honest - I am an ORM newbie - question : what is the big advantage of ORM over writing a decent DAL by hand? • Fluxbox compiling problems after making a change.

  I'm trying to make the change here: http://fluxbox-wiki.org/index.php?title=Howto_Make_dblclick_titlebar_maximize I am using the current git version of the fluxbox source. I assume that those instructions are perhaps no longer valid for the current git version. In the void FluxboxWindow::setupWindow() function I can see no references to CommandRef or frame. I would like to know if it is possible that I could work out where they should go in that function, with only having a limited knowledge? I am still trying to learn programming and don't know enough just yet to work out where they should go. I assume I can't just paste in the suggested lines anywhere in that function, but why not? I can paste the source if needed, but I am unsure where to paste to.

• C# Proxy, what is the best way to do this?

  I'm writing a proxy using .NET and C#. It has a couple of functions that it needs to fulfill. I haven't done much Socket programming, and I am not sure the best way to go about it. Should I use Synchronous Sockets, Asynchronous sockets? Please help! It must... Accept Connections from the client on two different ports, and be able to receive data on both ports at the same time. When a connection is made on a port, it must immediately connect to the server, and start sending data as it receives it from the client to the server. Packets must be forwarded in the order they are received, exactly as they were received. It needs to be as low latency as possible. I don't need the ability for multiple clients to use the proxy, but it would be a nice feature if its easy to implement.

• C/C++ - Convert 24-bit signed integer to float

  I'm programming in C++. I need to convert a 24-bit signed integer (stored in a 3-byte array) to float (normalizing to [-1.0,1.0]). The platform is MSVC++ on x86 (which means the input is little-endian). I tried this: float convert(const unsigned char* src) { int i = src[2]; i = (i << 8) | src[1]; i = (i << 8) | src[0]; const float Q = 2.0 / ((1 << 24) - 1.0); return (i + 0.5) * Q; } I'm not entirely sure, but it seems the results I'm getting from this code are incorrect. So, is my code wrong and if so, why?

• Implementing tracing gestures on iPhone

  I'd like to create an iPhone app that supports tracing of arbitrary shapes using your finger (with accuracy detection). I have seen references to an Apple sample app called "GestureMatch" that supposedly implemented exactly that, but it was removed from the SDK at some point and I cannot find the source anywhere via Google. Does anyone know of a current official sample that demonstrates tracing like this? Or any solid suggestions on other resources to look at? I've done some iPhone programming, but not really anything with the graphics API's or custom handling of touch gestures, so I'm not sure where to start.

• azure performance

  I've moved my app from a dedicated server to azure (and sql azure), and have noticed substantial performance degradation. obviously not having the database and web server on the same piece of hardware is much of it, but I'm curious what other people have found in migrating to azure, and if there is anything any of you would suggest I do to improve it. Right now I'm considering moving back to my dedicated server... So in summary, are there any rules of thumb for this, existing research (wasn't able to find much) or other pieces of advice on improving the performance of the app? has anyone else found the same to be true, and improved their site's performance in some way? it's built in C# on asp.net mvc 2. • Are there any layout comparison / vssetting sharing places?

  Well, I reinstalled Visual Studio 2008 and did not have a backup of my vssetting file. I did not think it was that important as I had barely customised it, however it just doesn't feel right! The general windows feel correct but When I switch between views (source code, Windows forms, web editor), all the toolbars get muddled up. In the past few years, I have seen so many "post your desktop" type items and I could swear there there would be some "post your IDE", but after looking on Google and several other programming sites, I just can't find one! I don't want this turning in to a post your IDE unless others want to, but can anyone point me to a site where they have done this, or even better - are there any vssetting sharing places where you can download ones made by others?

• When to alter a function vs when to just write a new one...?

  /is n00b Through the gift of knowledge and expertise encoded here, I am doing my best to avoid n00b mistakes as I learn the basics of programming. I use functions when I (think I) can in PHP, and keep them somewhat sorted in different includes. The n00b problem I'm running into now is situations where perhaps 4/5th of an existing function is relevant to a new need. Maybe there are a slightly different set of inputs, or an additional calculation or two in the series, or output needs a different format/structure... but the core of the function is still applicable. Is there a good rule of thumb regarding when one should bolt-on crap to an original function and when one should (literally) copy & paste most of it into a new function and tweak to fit the situation? On the one hand I feel bad duping code, on the other I feel bad cluttering up an existing function with stuff not always needed...

• Appending Integer array elements in Java

  I have an array, say int a[]={2,0,1,0,1,1,0,2,1,1,1,0,1,0,1}; I need to append each of the 5 neighboring elements and assign them to a new array b with length=(a.length/5); and i want to append the 5 neighboring elements so that I have: int b[]={20101,10211,10101}; I need to do this for various length arrays, in most cases with length of a being greater than 15. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm programming in Java. Thanks in advance.

• wanting to move up from ms access, thinking .net? visual studio?

  So I wrote a project-management program for a small business using Microsoft Access 2007. Now they've requested lots of additional features (timekeeping, privileged data tiers ...) I personally use Linux, but the whole office uses Windows. I'm relatively new to programming but like to teach myself using projects like this. I'm right on the edge on this -- I can't really tell what the path of least resistance here is: do I stay in access + VBA and teach myself a dying, annoying language -- while struggling against all the limitations of Access? Or do I move to something else? Python seems simple enough ... Whatever I use, i need to be able to offer a GUI.

• JavaScript socket vs. Flash socket?

  Steve Jobs just posted this article on why Apple rejects Flash... http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/ I agree that javascript and css can be used to replicate some of Flash's animation, though Flash does all sorts of scaling and tweening that is incredibly powerful, and I'm not sure that there's anything comparable in javascript, if there is, I certainly haven't seen it. However, my question is about the socket. Flash has an incredibly powerful openSocket class that allows you to connect to a server and have the server and the client talk back and forth to one another. As far as I know there is no equivalent class in Javascript. Am I mistaken? Is there some secret mystery Ajax class that replicates the openSocket? If not, then that feature alone makes Flash an invaluable tool. I'm interested in all answers though... and yes this IS a programming question! :)

• Displaying build times in Visual Studio?

  Our build server is taking too long to build one of our C++ projects. It uses Visual Studio 2008. Is there any way to get devenv.com to log the time taken to build each project in the solution, so that I know where to focus my efforts? Improved hardware is not an option in this case. I've tried setting the output verbosity (under Tools / Options / Projects and Solutions / Build and Run / MSBuild project build output verbosity). This doesn't seem to have any effect in the IDE. When running MSBuild from the command line (and, for Visual Studio 2008, it needs to be MSBuild v3.5), it displays the total time elapsed at the end, but not in the IDE. I really wanted a time-taken report for each project in the solution, so that I could figure out where the build process was taking its time. Alternatively, since we actually use NAnt to drive the build process (we use Jetbrains TeamCity), is there a way to get NAnt to tell me the time taken for each step?

  Hi guys, I'm student here, new to python and programming in general. I have a dictionary links which holds a tuple mapped to a number. How can I join the second url in the second tuple together with the urljoin() function? What I'm trying to do is get complete links so I can run a recursive function search() which takes a complete url as an arguement, finds all the links in each url and stores the number of links mapped to the links in a database. • Apache modules: C module vs mod_wsgi python module - Performance

  Hi A client of ours is asking us to implement a module in C in Apache webserver for performance reasons. This module should handle RESTful uri's, access a database and return results in json format. Many people here have recommended python mod_wsgi instead - but for simplicity of programming reasons. Can anyone tell me if there is a significant difference in performance between the mod_wsgi python solution vs. the Apache + C.module. Any anecdotes? Pointers to some study posted online?

• Android: Change activity state when receiving a phone call

  Hi. A problem came up in my latest android programming project. The problem is I would like to change Activity that launches when the phone receives a call. Is it possible to add some text after the contact name when a call is received. I have search the web for something that could do that, and been looking in the API for hours and I cannot find anything, is it possible with reflection of something like that? • Disabling mouse movement and clicks altogether in c#

  At work, i'm a trainer. I'm setting up lessons to teach people how to "do stuff" without a mouse... Ever seen people click "login" textbox, type, take the mouse, click "password", type their password, then take the mouse again to click the "connect" button beneath ? So i'll teach them how to do all that without a mouse (among many other things, of course) At the end of the course, i'll make them pass a sort of exam. So i'm building a little wizard based app in which i present some simili-real-life examples of forms to fill in, but i want to disable their mouse programatically while they do this test. However, further in the wizard, i'll have to let them use their mouse again. Is there a -- possibly easy -- way to just disable the mouse for a while, and re-enable it later on? I'm on C# 2.0, programming under VC# 2k5, if that matters

• If OOP makes problems with large projects, what doesn't?

  I learned Python OOP at school. My (good in theory, bad in practice) informatics told us about how good OOP was for any purpose; Even/Especially for large projects. Now I don't have any experience with teamwork in software development (what a pity, I'd like to program in a team) and I don't know anything about scaling and large projects either. Since some time I'm reading more and more about that object-oriented programming has (many) disadvantages when it comes to really big and important projects/systems. I got a bit confused by that as I always thought that OOP helped you keep large amounts of code clean and structured. Now why should OOP be problematic in large projects? If it is, what would be better? Functional, Declarative/Imperative?

• Cross-platform configuration, options, settings, preferences, defaults

  I'm interested in peoples' views on how best to store preferences and default settings in cross-platform applications. I primarily work in Perl on *nix and Windows but I'm also interested in the bigger picture. In the *nix world "dotfiles" (and directories) are very common with system-wide or application default settings generally residing in one path and user-specific settings in the home directory. Such files and dirs begin with a dot "." and are hidden by default from directory listings. Windows has the registry which also has paths for defaults and per-user overrides. Certain cross-platforms do it their own way, Firefox uses JavaScript preference files. Should a cross-platform app use one system across platforms or say dotfiles on *nix and registry on Windows? Does your favourite programming language have a library or module for accessing them in a standard way? Is there an emerging best practice or does everybody roll their own?
