• Creating a foreign key in MySQL produces error:

  I'm trying to create a foreign key on a table in MySQL and I'm getting a strange error that there seems to be little info about in any of my searches. I'm creating the key with this (emitted from mysql workbench 5.2): ALTER TABLE `db`.`appointment` ADD CONSTRAINT `FK_appointment_CancellationID` FOREIGN KEY (`CancellationID` ) REFERENCES `db`.`appointment_cancellation` (`ID` ) ON DELETE NO ACTION ON UPDATE NO ACTION , ADD INDEX `FK_appointment_CancellationID` (`CancellationID` ASC) ; at which point I get the error: ERROR 1452: Cannot add or update a child row: a foreign key constraint fails (alarmtekcore., CONSTRAINT FK_lead_appointment_CancellationID FOREIGN KEY (CancellationID) REFERENCES lead_appointment_cancellation (`) I've checked here but there's no data in the table.

I can't use the Auto Increment Identity Specification option as that has no idea that it is part of a composite key. I also don't want to use any aggregate function such as: MAX(field)+1 as this will have adverse affects with multiple users inputting data, rolling back etc. There might however be a nice trigger based option here, but I'm not sure. This must be a common issue so I'm hoping that someone has a lovely solution. As a side which may or may not affect the answer, I'm using Entity Framework 1.0 as my ORM, within a c# MVC application.

• ASP Function that returns result from stored procedures

  I am working on a project that requires me to hop into to separate DB's. So I have figured that I need to have multiple functions inside of my VB page. The only problem I am having,is I am not to sure how to get this all accomplished. So far I have figured out the overall structure, just need help implementing that structure. Here is my idea: The main Function would call two other functions. We can Call them Sub Function 1 and Sub Function 2. So, the main Function takes the saved sessions information for the E-mail address and dumps in into Sub Function 1. It needs to open up a new connection to the db/stored procedure and RUN the following procedure and then return the result. Here is the stored procedure and what i think is correct. CREATE PROCEDURE WEB_User ( @EMAIL_ADDRESS varchar(80) = [EMAIL_ADDRESS] ) AS SELECT MEMBER_NUMBER FROM WEB_LOGIN WHERE EMAIL_ADDRESS = @EMAIL_ADDRESS So my question is, what is the function suppose to look like? how do I send the session information to the procedure? and finally, how do I return the stored procedure results and push back into the main function so it can be carried into sub function 2? How can I get this data? I've tried queries like this: SELECT storeID, itemID, price FROM saledata WHERE itemID IN (SELECT itemID from itemmap) ORDER BY saledate DESC LIMIT 1 and then wrap that into an insert, but it's not getting the proper data.   Hi, Could somebody point out the necessary rights to do something like ALTER TABLE myTable ADD myColumn int NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [Constraint_name] DEFAULT ((0)) ? I assumed grant alter on myTable to [user] was enough but I'm getting the error message The UPDATE permission was denied on the object 'myTable', database 'x', schema 'dbo'. Could UPDATE rights be needed because of the DEFAULT constraint? Thanks.

Like..there can be no two Pages with the same Title. What check do I need to add in my Insert/Update Stored Procedure ? How do I make sure duplicates are never added. On my aspx Page I have a drop down list control that is bound to DataSource that returns Table 2(Title Table) and I have a text box in which user types Page's content to be stored. When I update, like lets say I have a row in my Table 1 as shown above with PageID=1. Now when I am updating this row, like I didn't change the Title from the drop down and only changed Content in the text box, its not updating the record ..and when Stored procedure's Update Query does not execute it displays a Label that says "Page with this title exists already." So whenever I am updating an existing record that label is displayed on screen.How do I change that IF condition in my Update Stored procedure?? EDIT:- @gbn :: Will that IF condition work in case of update? I mean lets say I am updating the Page with TitleID=1, I changed its content, then when I update, it's gonna execute that IF condition and it still won't update coz TitleID=1 already exits!It will only update if TitleID=1 is not there in Table1. Isn't it? Guess I am getting confused. Please answer.Thanks.

  I have two separate tables both with user id columns uid. I want to take a value from all users in one table and insert it into the correct row for the correct user in the other table. • Using application roles with DataReader

  I have an application that should use an application role from the database. I'm trying to make this work with queries that are actually run using Subsonic (2). To do this, I created my own DataProvider, which inherits from Subsonic's SqlDataProvider. It overrides the CreateConnection function, and calls sp_appsetrole to set the application role after the connection is created. This part works fine, and I'm able to get data using the application role. The problem comes when I try to unset the application role. I couldn't find any place in the code where my provider is called after the query is done, so I tried to add my own, by changing SubSonic code. The problem is that Subsonic uses a data reader. It loads data from the data reader, and then closes it. If I unset the application role before the data reader is closed, I get an error saying: There is already an open DataReader associated with this Command which must be closed first. If I unset the application role after the data reader is closed, I get an error saying ExecuteNonQuery requires an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is closed. I can't seem to find a way to close the data reader without closing the connection.

But when I introduce it, it fails with "Unknown column 'n.entry_id' in 'on clause'" Is it even possible to add a join to this query? Can anybody help, thanks!

  I have a list in a database that the user should be able to order. itemname| order value (int) --------+--------------------- salad | 1 mango | 2 orange | 3 apples | 4 On load from the database, I simply order by order_value. By drag 'n drop, he should be able to move apples so that it appears at the top of the list.. itemname| order value (int) --------+--------------------- apples | 4 salad | 1 mango | 2 orange | 3 Ok. So now internally I have to update EVERY LIST ITEM! If the list has 20 or 100 items, that's a lot of updates for a simple drag operation. itemname| order value (int) --------+--------------------- apples | 1 salad | 2 mango | 3 orange | 4 I'd rather do it with only one update. One way I thought of is if "internal Order" is a double value. itemname| order value (double) --------+--------------------- salad | 1.0 mango | 2.0 orange | 3.0 apples | 4.0 SO after the drag n' drop operation, I assign apples has a value that is less than the item it is to appear in front of: itemname| order value (double) --------+--------------------- apples | 0.5 salad | 1.0 mango | 2.0 orange | 3.0 .. and if an item is dragged into the middle somewhere, its order_value is bigger than the one it appears after .. here I moved orange to be between salad and mango: itemname| order value (double) --------+--------------------- apples | 0.5 salad | 1.0 orange | 1.5 mango | 2.0 Any thoughts on better ways to do this?

  I am building a C# ASP.NET page where I want to call a stored procedure in a database. I have setup a SqlDataSource which points to the stored procedure. Parameters are obtained from the Web's control directly (TextBox) I have a button, when the user clicks it it should run the stored procedure, so I was going to add code like this : mySqlDataSource.run() or mySqlDataSource.exec() or mySqlDataSource.storedProcedure() but of course none of these methods exist. How do I initial the stored procedure? and how do I get the value returned by the stored procedure please? Thank you!

• Timeout LinqToSql inserting millions of records

  I'm inserting approximently 3 million records in a database using this solution. Eventually when the application has been inserting records for a while (my last run lasted around 4 hours), it gives a timeout with the following SqlException: "SqlExcepetion: Timeout expired. The timeoutperiod elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." What's the best way to handle this exception? Is there a way to prevent this from happening or should I catch the exception? Thanks in advance!

  I have a data base with Price_old like: Date --- Hour --- Price _____________________________ Jan 1 --- 1 --- $3.0 Jan 1 --- 2 --- $3.1 Jan 1 --- 3 --- $3.3 Jan 1 --- 4 --- $3.15 Jan 2 --- 1 --- $2.95 Jan 2 --- 2 --- $3.2 Jan 2 --- 3 --- $3.05 What I then have is a spreadsheet, with the same structure, that I will be reading into a datatable, I'll call the new datatable Price_New, note that price new may not have all the same date/hours as Price_Old So, I end up with 2 datatables, Price_Old, and Price_New, and what I need to do is update Price_old with the new prices in Price_New, and then commit those new prices to the Database. I am kinda new to LINQ (about 30 mins of experience) and would really appreciate if someone could give me a pointer or two on whether or not this is doing in LINQ and what the best method would be. • Is closing/disposing an SqlDataReader needed if you are already closing the sqlconnection?

Is there any advantage to using using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(conStr)) { using (SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand()) { // dostuff } } instead of using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(conStr)) { SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand(); // dostuff } Obviously it does matter run more than one command with the same connection, since closing an SqlDataReader is more efficient than closing and reopening a connection (calling conn.Close();conn.Open(); will also free up the connection). I see many people insist that failure to close the DataReader means leaving open connection resources around, but doesn't that only apply if you don't close the connection?

• Trying to verify understanding of Foreign Keys MSSQL

  So I'm working on just a learning project to expose myself to doing some things I do not get to do at work. I'm just making a simple bug and case tracking app (I know there are a million this is just to work with some tools I don't get to). So I was designing my database and realized I've never actually used Foreign Keys before in any of my projects, I've used them before but never actually setting up a column as a FK. So I've designed my database as follows, which I think is close to correct (at least for the initial layout). However When I try to add the FK's to the linking Tables I get an error saying, "The tables present in the relationship must have the same number of columns". I'm doing this by in SQLSMS by going to the Keys 'folder' and adding a FK. Is there something that I am doing wrong here, I don't understand why the tables would have to have the same number of columns for me to add a FK relationship between the tables?
