• How is a "Software Developer" different from a "Software Consultant"? What makes a consultant?

  I have seen a lot of people claiming themselves to be a "software consultant". These consultants do what a normal software developer does, write code, estimate tasks, fix bugs and attend meetings etc. The only difference being the financials, consultants end up earning more. Then how is a software developer different from a "consultant"? In addition to the main question, I would like to know how can a software developer become a consultant? Are there any specific guidelines for a consultant? Do they need to amass certifications and write up research papers? Please do not confuse the software consultant with a management consultant. Software consultants I have seen are not managers.

Der Download steht für alle unterstützten Plattformen seit dem 03.06.2014 auf OTN zur Verfügung.Natürlich gibt es viele Neuerungen, daher können hier nur wenige aufgezählt werden: - Als Repository Datenbank wird jetzt auch die Datenbankversion 12c (als Non-CDB) unterstützt - Das Sicherheitsmodell für zusammengefasste Zieltypen (z.B. Gruppen) wurde geändert. Jetzt kann man Rechte auf die Member einer Grupper vergeben, ohne dass das gleiche Recht auf die Gruppe selbst vergeben werden müsste - Default Preferred Credentials stellen sicher, dass neue EM Benutzer auch ohne weitere Konfiguration arbeiten können - Der Bereich Cloud Management, also der Betrieb einer eigenen Cloud wurde stark weiterentwickelt. - Im Datenbankbereich können die AWR Daten der einzelnen Zieldatenbanken jetzt in ein zentrales AWR Warehouse übertragen und somit besser für längere Zeit gespeichert werden.   After a couple of year hiatus from blogging at Geeks With Blogs, I’m back!  I’m still blogging about Visual Studio 2010 and TFS 2010 over at Team System Rocks (soon to undergo some major revisions), so expect to see some cross postings from there. Here though, I expect to focus on System Center technologies (mostly System Center Operations Manager and System Center Service Manager, with some of the others thrown in there too, as that is my day job now..  I’ll also use this blog to start tracking my foray into Windows Phone 7 development.  I’ve decided to go the game programming route first.

• Used DBAN to wipe Lenovo u410 then installed Ubuntu. Need to install windows 8, but I get an error.

  When I try to boot from my windows 8 USB (tested on a separate PC), I get this error text "The boot configuration data for your pc is missing or contains errors." I want to install windows again so I can fix a battery issue I'm having. Lenovo's power management app has an option to keep the battery at 60% if the laptop stays plugged in most of the time. I enabled this, then formatted without changing it back. I think there might be a raid setup that I may need to remove or something. I don't mind removing Ubuntu and starting fresh. I would just love some help with all this, I'm a noob when it comes to Linux.

• How to create a bootable Clonezilla usb with Tuxboot that work?

  I'm trying to create a bootable clonezilla usb with tuxboot, the application that is recommended by clonezilla site. I installed it via Ubuntu PPA and follow the instructions on the site to put files on usb. Everything went well and then I restarted the system. Now when I'm trying to boot from usb it says: "This is not a bootable disk. Please insert a bootable floppy and press any key to try again ..." What is causing this problem? I really appreciate any help you can provide. My laptop model is Dell studio-1558 and I'm running Ubuntu 14.04

• Best Way To Develop Robust Cross-Platform Application?

  Windows C programmer here (going back to 1992 and Windows95 back when it was called Windows93). Can function in C++, but mostly still a C programmer. Looking to build a cross-platform casual game. Very numbers heavy with only a few artistic embellishments and animations, so perhaps a development environment for business apps might be the best option. Or an easy-to-use 2D game dev platform. Target platforms: Windows, Mac, MS Tablet, iPhone, iPad, Android. I currently develop on Windows with Visual Studio 2012, but we could spend up to $50K on hardware/software/middleware if necessary. Not very competent getting open-source software working. Would rather pay the money and jump right into app development. Recommendations?

• Turn off laptop display and have monitor

  My laptop display has stopped working and is unfixable! Anyway, I got a full HD monitor and plugged that into the HDMI port of the laptop. I have changed the power settings so that I can close the lid and still have the monitor on, and this all works. However because it is on "mirror displays", I cannot get the full 1080p resolution that the monitor supports, and when I turn off mirror displays and switch off the laptop screen, the monitor will also switch off! I'm really stuck, as I can only get the monitor to display its full resolution if I have it with the laptop screen turned on, and I dont want this because (as the laptop display does not work) things get lost on that side of the screen. HELP. (Dell Studio 1537 Monitor is Samsung SA300 Connected through HDMI Ubuntu 11.10)

• How do I restore the privacy pane of the system settings?

  Checking out screenshots of the system settings in Ubuntu 12.10, it seems that I am missing a few. When I open up my settings, I cannot see Privacy, Backup, and Management Service. Also, nothing comes up when I search the Dash for these words. In a previous edition of Ubuntu, I purged Ubuntu One (with sudo apt-get purge ubuntuone-client python-ubuntuone-storage* ubuntuone-couch ubuntuone-installer) and appropriately, I cannot see the Ubuntu One icon. I've also previously purged unity-lens-music Perhaps I purged some metapackage that removed the others? In any case, how do I restore the privacy pane (as well as the other icons)? Also, any suggestions for what I did to remove the packages in the first place (and hence how to avoid this problem in the future)?

• What are the advantages of a $ SKU of VS2012 over Express?

  I will be using Visual Studio only for creating C#/XAML Windows Store apps. Is there any reason for me to purchase a "Professional" SKU of VS 2012 rather than just using the Express (free) "Metro apps with C#/XAML" version? The only thing I can think of is that I won't be able to use Resharper in the Express version (which I've already purchased a license for, but I use it at work, so that won't be a waste of money if I can't use it at home) - plus, I believe that even the Express SKU of VS 2012 will have similar code quality utility built in.
