  Recently, I had to create a program to send messages between two winforms executable. I used a tool with simple built-in functionalities to prevent having to figure out all the ins and outs of this vast quantity of protocols that exist. But now, I'm ready to learn more about the internals difference between each of theses protocols. I googled a couple of them but it would be greatly appreciate to have a good reference book that gives me a clean idea of how each protocol works and what are the pros and cons in a couple of context. Here is a list of nice protocols that I found: Shared memory TCP List item Named Pipe File Mapping Mailslots MSMQ (Microsoft Queue Solution) WCF I know that all of these protocols are not specific to a language, it would be nice if example could be in .net. • How many developers do I need to build a website like Freelancer.com in about 3-5 months? [closed]

  I have been asked to make a list of people that I need to build something similar to freelancer.com. Not exactly same, has a few more features to it too but I can't really get my head around the whole freelancer.com site. I have built a social networking site from scratch which is 70% of Facebook and 20% Google+ in about 5 months with raw PHP, JS, CSS and Ajax. I dont think it will take me more than a month or something to build the whole freelancer.com from scratch. Please suggest anything that should I pay attention to. I am thinking about: 2 php developers 1 mysql engineer 1 network/server engineer 1 graphics artist 1 UI developer Time frame: 20 days Is this a good estimation?

I make a class library named Infrastructure.Repository for database processes I make a class library named Application for business logic layer And finally I make a MVC project for the UI. But now some things are confusing me. Am I using 3-tier programming? If yes so what is n-tier programming and which one is better? If no so what is 3-tier programming? Some where I see that the tiers namings are DAL and BIZ. Which one is correct according to the naming convention?

• Suggestions needed on an architecture for a multiple clients and customisable web application

  Our product is a web based course managemant system. We have 10+ clients and in future we may get more clients. (Asp.net,SQL Server) Currently if one of our customers need extra functionality or customised business logic, we will change the db schema and code to meet the needs. (we only have one branch code base and one database schema) To make the change wont affect each others route, we use a client flag, which defined in a web config file, thus those extra fields and biz logic only applied to a particular customer's system. if(ClientId = 'ABC') { //DO ABC Stuff } else { //Normal Route } One of our senior colleagues said, in this way, small company like us can save resources on supporting multiple resources. But what I feel is, this strategy makes our code and database even harder to maintain. Anyone there crossed similar situation? How do you handle that?

  I have been researching on open source software for an online grocery shop project. I have now narrowed by search to .NET based nopCommerce and the PHP based PrestaShop shopping carts. My plan is to acquire an open source shopping cart and hire a local developer to customize it to our local needs & as per our requirement. I'm now wondering whether I should have a developer start the whole project from scratch, or use an open source software such us PrestaShop or nopCommerce which can then be customized? • MVC helper functions business logic

  I am creating some helper functions (mvc.net) for creating common controls that I need in almost every project such as alert boxes, dialogs etc. If these do not contain any business logic and it's just client side code (html, js) then it's ok. My problem arises when I need some business logic behind this helper. I want to create a 'rate my (web) application' control that will be visible every 3 days and the user may hide it for now, navigate to rate link or hide it for ever. To do this I need some sort of database access and a code that acts as business logic. Normally I would use a controller for this, with my DI and everything, but I don't know where to put this code now. This should be placed in the helper function or in a controller that responds objects instead of ActionResults?

  Say my company is going to build a complicated asp.net web form education system. One of the module is web based registration. To make it flexiable, we decide to use user control(ascx) with rule-engine (work flow) regulating all business logic behide them. Thus in future,for different clients, we can simply config basic existing rules or adding new rules.(Rules stored in db or XML per client). Now the question is how to deal with the user controls (ascx)? My opinion is for different client build diffrent user control from scratch. other voice is like reuse existing user controls.

• Bringing in New Architecture During Maintenance on Legacy Systems

  I have been tasked with adding some new features to a legacy ASP.NET MVC2 project. The codebase is a disaster and I want to write these new features with some thought behind the implementation and not just throw these new features into the mess. I would like to introduce things like dependency injection and the orchestrator pattern; just to the code that I am going to write. I don't have enough time to try to refactor the entire system. Is it OK to not be consistent with the rest of the codebase and add new features following different design principles? Should I not introduce new patterns and just get the features implemented? I feel like it might be confusing to the next person to see parts of the system using a design that other parts are not following.

• Is Silverlight only for eye-candy, or does it have a use in business?

  Granted that Silverlight may make eye-popping websites of great beauty, is there any justification for using it to make practical web applications that have serious business purposes? I'd like to use it (to learn it) for a new assignment I have, which is to build a web-based application that keeps track of the data interfaces used in our organization, but I'm not sure how to justify it, even to myself. Any thoughts on this? If I can't justify it then I will have to build the app using the same old tired straight ASP.NET approach I've used (it seems) a hundred times already.

• Parallel.For Inconsistency results

  I am using VB.net to write a parallel based code. I use Parallel.For to generate pairs of 500 objects or in combination C(500,2) such as the following code; but I found that it didn't always generate all combinations which should be 124750 (shown from variable Counter). No other thread was runing when this code was run. I am using a Win-7 32 Bit desktop with Intel Core i5 CPU [email protected], 3.33 GHz and RAM 2GB. • Active Directory auto login to website for domain users

  I am putting together an Intranet for a company - I have set up authentication to get into the Intranet from a login box linked to AD via LDAP/ However the client wants (if possible) to have users automatically authenticate into the intranet if they are logged into the domain. AD and IIS7.5 are on separate servers (in the same network). I believe that I need to use WindowsAuthentication to do this - but will that work? as the web server is not part of the domain: do I need to tell IIS where the AD server is? The next part could be more complex: once the user has authenticated, I need to drag user details from AD about the user, I guess with LDAP, however I will need to know the user's username in order to do this, won't I? as the user hast had to type this in, how do I get that? The intranet site is in asp.net 4 VB.

• Do delegates defy OOP

  I'm trying to understand OOP so I can write better OOP code and one thing which keeps coming up is this concept of a delegate (using .NET). I could have an object, which is totally self contained (encapsulated); it knows nothing of the outside world... but then I attach a delegate to it. In my head, this is still quite well separated as the delegate only knows what to reference, but this by itself means it has to know about something else outside it's world! That a method exists within another class! Have I got myself it total muddle here, or is this a grey area, or is this actually down to interpretation (and if so, sorry as that will be off topic I'm sure). My question is, do delegates defy/muddy the OOP pattern?

  Is there still demand for developers who crate software without GUI's in the industry? Are jobs still in demand? I only ask because I write a lot of software for myself in C. I mainly use FreeBSD without a GUI. My software is for data mining, automation and marketing purposes most of the time as this is the field I work in. I find that a GUI is not needed and I feel comfortable working within a console. I've never worked for a company as a programmer, but in the industry do you have dedicated programmers who work exclusively on the GUI's and other who write the logic?

• Is imposing the same code format for all developers a good idea?

  We are considering to impose a single standard code format in our project (auto format with save actions in Eclipse). The reason is that currently there is a big difference in the code formats used by several (10) developers which makes it harder for one developer to work on the code of another developer. The same Java file sometimes uses 3 different formats. So I believe the advantage is clear (readability = productivity) but would it be a good idea to impose this? And if not, why? UPDATE We all use Eclipse and everyone is aware of the plan. There already is a code format used by most but it is not enforced since some prefer to stick to their own code format. Because of the above reasons some would prefer to enforce it.

  I developed an application using Windows Form in C++ (IDE MSVC 2010). Some part of application also has MFC, and OpenCv. I want to send the application to my cleint for interim testing on his own machine. I have not developed any installer for the same, and so I will be sending him the.EXE file. I want that the client should not face any difficulty in replicating the experiment, and thus saves his time. Can somebody suggest me what all softwares(such as, MSVC, .NET Framework, Windows SDK etc) should already be installed on the client's machine for successfull testing of the application? Note: OS (Windows 7) and hardware is exactly same at both sides.

• Is there a White / Blank Canvas E-Commerce Platform to Integrate into Existing Site? [closed]

Essentially, there is a global header, and a global footer, and in between is a white expandable div. We'd like our store to fit between the header and footer (and preferably be 960px wide). Do you know of any store platform built to live between the header/footer for situations like this? We really want a full store, not just paypal buy buttons. We'd like it to have a shop backend (CMS-like) with full tracking, etc. Can be paid or unpaid, and preferably hosted by us, but either might be applicable (if iframe or alternative works securely?). • Does connection pooling work fine to execute 60 DB queries to load a page?

  We use Linq2Sql in an ASP.NET application. Unfortunately the eager-loading in Linq2Sql isn't as powerful as in Entity Framework, so a lot of the data has to be lazy loaded as needed. Taking connection pooling into account, is it OK for a web page to execute 60 queries to load a page? Executing a single big query probably won't be much better, as those 60 queries will all those connection pooled connections and not open a new connection each time (which I realize is slow). Any thoughts?
