Linux: Schedule command to run once after reboot (RunOnce equivalent)

I'd like to schedule a command to run after reboot on a Linux box. I know how to do this so the command consistently runs after every reboot with a @reboot crontab entry, however I only want the command to run once. After it runs, it should be removed from the queue of commands to run. I'm essentially looking for a Linux equivalent to RunOnce in the Windows world. Good Linux Distro for Disconnected Netbook

I'm deployed to Afghanistan with the Army and I have a friend who's netbook had his hard drive take a dump on him. He ordered a new hard drive and I was able to download and burn a copy of Ubuntu to disk from work. However the default install doesn't support most of the media that he wants to watch (AVI files, probably some DIVX video) without installing extra packages. We don't have internet in the tent and really don't have a vaiable option for downloading additional packages through the package manager anywhere here. The computer is a small HP netbook. All my friend wants is to watch ripped movies. Does anyone know of a good way to do either of the following: Download packages seperately and install them via CD A distro that is going to come preloaded with all of the packages and needed to watch just about any type of video file you can think of? Slow internet using Arch Linux

after a week or so of using Arch Linux I cant access the internet - it takes around 5 mins to load google (most of the other websites just give me a timeout), pacman's downloading speed range between 5-2Kbs, and pinging google takes around 9Kms. I'm connected using wireless network (wifi card is Intel Ultimate 6300 and router is Edimax 6524n). Every other Windows machine that's connected to the network (and even the T410 running Windows) is fine, so the problem lies in Linux. So far, i checked the resolv.conf file (my router ip address is listed), and the hosts file (pretty much default), and I disabled the ipv6 module. None of that helped. PS: i'm using NetworkManager (but the problem still occurs when connecting using wicd) running on Gnome3. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! EDIT: something really strange happens whenever I ping google: i get an unknown host 'google.com', but the bit rate from the card jumps at the exact second I ping google (so far, the bit rate jumped to 54Mb/s from 1Mb/s over the course of 4 pings).

Atheros wireless not working

I have been struggling hard since i have installed Ubuntu 10.10 but it has been difficult for me to get my wifi working. So here is what i tried. First i checked whether i have the driver using the ifconfig command and it shows the wireless lan driver as wlan0. Next, i tried the command iwlist wlan0 scanning by becoming the root which gave me the output as no scan results. Next, i visited this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Atheros to see as to what problem my laptop may have. I do own have an ath5k chipset. And as i followed the instructions in the above link in one of the blacklist-ath_pci.conf file had this written in it. For some Atheros 5K RF MACs, the madwifi driver loads buts fails to correctly initialize the hardware, leaving it in a state from which ath5k cannot recover. To prevent this condition, stop madwifi from loading by default. Use Jockey to select one driver or the other. (Ubuntu: #315056, #323830 I am not that good at Linux but i have given it a try. I am desperate to have my wifi working and i would be glad if this community could help. How to add locale aware CSS to an individual component in ADF Faces.

When creating a skin in ADF Faces, it's (relatively) easy to add locale aware CSS using the :rtl psuedo-class on the end of a skinning key. Example:af|inputListOfValues::content { padding-left: 3px;}af|inputListOfValues::content:rtl { padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 3px;}In this example, we want some padding before the start of the text in the content element of the component. In right to left locales, the start of the text is on the right side by default, so we need to change the padding from the left to the right.Let's say, however, that you want to specify a locale aware CSS style on an individual component using the contentStyle attribute. There is a handy ADF Faces EL function to help you out here: isRTL. For our example, let's say we want an inputText component whose text content is 'end' aligned. If you weren't considering RTL locales, you could code this as:<af:inputText id="idInputTextRight" label="right aligned" value="Test" contentStyle="text-align: right;"/>This, however, will be right aligned regardless of locale. This is where isRTL() comes to the rescue. restricting access only through domains on nginx on virtual hosts

My problem is that when i try to access the user using the IP address i get one of the sites in the virtual hosts too.. Although i disabled the default (removed the symbolic link) from sites-enabled folder but still not solved it for me. any suggestions?

Hello, I need to install a program for my studies and, this program, need java to run. When I try to perform the installation say that cannot find the JDK; since the JDK is already installed by default in mac, the problem is export the java home. I´ve try a lot and I cant do it! I know that I have to add a line in a .bashrc file (or .profile, or .bash_profile) I´ve created all those files, at different times but nothing... I´m a new mac user, but I use Linux too and I dont know what happened, I just need to export java home to perform my work... and is really necessary for me to add environment variables too. Hello, This is my situation: Router A: IP 192.168.1.1 Mask 192.168.1.0/24 - Connected to the internet. Server: - Interface eth0: inet addr:10.1.1.125 Mask:255.255.255.0 (connected to router B) - Interface ra0: inet addr:192.168.1.125 Mask:255.255.255.0 (connected to router A) Router B: IP 10.1.1.254 Mask 10.1.1.0/24 - Connected to Server's eth0 Computer: connected to Router B via WiFi connection. I configured a static route on Router B that use as default gateway 192.168.1.125 and i can ping that ip from computer. The problem is: how i can connect to the internet ? In other words, traffic coming from Server eth0 should use ra0 as gateway. Any suggestion ? Thank you

Automator apps with different icons that persist upon saving

Automator allows to save a workflow as an application bundle. It uses an Automator specific icon for doing this. I want to change this icon (using different icons for different workflows). I can do this by going into the application bundle and change the icon with Icon Composer. The disadvantage of this solution is that if I open the application bundle in Automator and save it, it uses the default icon again. Is there a way to change the icon for good?

How to set Guake as preferred terminal emulator for "Run in Terminal"?

I've recently installed Guake and like it a lot. I'd like to set it as my preferred terminal application. That is, when I right-click on a bash script file, click "Open", and choose "Run in Terminal", I want it to open in a new Guake tab. I'm not sure where to set Guake as the preferred app for "Run in Terminal". And I'm guessing that I might need the command to be something like guake --new-tab=new --execute-command="COMMANDHERE", so how do I pass that parameter? Ideally, I'd like a terminal invocation to open a new Guake tab, unless there is already one available. (Difficult to tell, what id there's already a command running in the existing tab?) Failing that, just opening a new Guake tab is ok. Also, is there an option to keep Guake hidden when this happens? Already tried: Based on How can I set default terminal used? I have already tried: gconftool --type string --set /desktop/gnome/applications/terminal/exec guake - this made Guake appear when I type Ctrl-Alt-T. setting x-terminal-emulator to \usr\bin\guake in Alternatives Configurator - this made no difference (having already made the previous change).

What is the best package repository for Debian ?

Hello everybody I have a question regarding packages repository in Debian (Lenny). A new server at rackspace cloud service comes with nothing (plain system) so i had to upgrade system and install all necessary packages by myself. But the problem is that default repositories does not provide newer versions of software i need (PHP is 5.2.6, comparing to 5.2.13). In CentOS i used to get all new packages from third-party sources, which works really well till now. I have talked to guys from rackspace about it and looks like they cant provide anything except kernel headers. And i dont really want to build from source. So, whats the way to get newer software ? Any good third party sources? Thanks.

Cannot access Application configured on local IIS 7 using IP/machine name

I have a windows 7 machine 64 bit and IIS 7 I have a default website on the IIS.Its binding is {IP: All Unassigned , Port:80 , Host Name : blank} I have added a new asp.net application to that website,mapped physical path, have set the virtual path as "MyWebApp". Application pool for "MyWebApp" is "DefaultAppPool" {.Net Framework: 4.0 ; Managed Pipeline Mode: Classic} The problem I am facing is I can access the website using http://localhost, http://IP.IP.IP.IP and http://MyMachineName But I can not access the Application other than using http://localhost/MyWebApp What should I do if I want to access the webapp using http://MyMachineName/MyWebApp OR http://IP.IP.IP.IP/MyWebApp Please note : I have already created an inbound rule to allow all HTTP traffic for port 80 in firewall settings.

Unable to set my own icon for launcher item in 12.04

I use the Faenza icon collection in Ubuntu 12.04 Unity with no issues. Screen becomes black after pressing dash or alt-tab

I did an upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10. Unity 3d becomes a black screen after pressing the dash-button or after pressing alt-tab to switch between open windows. I can see the panel on the top(lock,sound,..) and the panel on the left (launcher) but the rest is black. It looks like a maximised black window. The open Windows are active but I cant see them. I logout by pressing logout in the right top corner and pressing enter (because logout is default focused on the dialogue screen) and leave unity3d. Unity3d worked with 11.04 very good. If I press the dash button the dash looks like an 16-Bit or 8-Bit window and buttons for maximise, minimise and close are displayed and looks inverted. I have rebooted my notebook just now and log in to Unity 3D and tested some features of Unity and everything works well. The black thing is only a layer. I can use my desktop but cant see anything because of the layer, but everything works. What does the email header "X-CAA-SPAM" refer to?

I've got an application that sends out notification emails to users of the application (this is not spam; the information in these emails is solicited and useful, and is also a feature turned off by default and must be enabled by the user). The app is still in beta, and one of our testers reports that the notification emails are going to his junk mail folder in Outlook 2003. This is the only reported case of this, but I asked him to send me the email headers from the message, and I noticed that there is a header there labeled "X-CAA-SPAM" with a value of 00000 . I'm a programmer, so I'm fairly green in the world of successful automated emails - does anyone know if this header is the culprit? If not, any suggestions?

Password Management for Oracle WebLogic customers

One of the most common requests for enhancements I get across my desk is that customers wish to allow end users to change their passwords from our products. Now, typically password management is not in the realm of individual applications but it is an infrastructure requirement, so we don't usually add this to our roadmaps by default. The issue is that with the vast range of security stores that can be used with our product line across the Web Application Servers we support, it is almost impossible to come up with a generic enough API to work across them. If you have a specific security store on a specific Web Application Server platform then there are simpler solutions. There are a number of ways of implementing this without providing functionality specific functionality: Oracle sells Identity Management software that offers common API's to manage passwords. You can purchase those products and link to the password change dialog in those products using Navigation Keys. If you are a customer using Oracle WebLogic, then there is a sample JSP's that can be linked to provide this functionality under Oracle TechNet (registration required) under Code Samples (project S20). These can be added as a Navigation Key to complete the functionality. This will allow end users to manage their own passwords. Obviously these are all samples and should be treated as customizations when you implement them. If you wish to understand Navigation Keys, then look at the Oracle Utilities Application Framework Integration Guidelines (Doc Id: 789060.1) available from My Oracle Support.

Can't restore HDD using multiple programs

Please refer to my original question about this issue. I tried GetDataBack and it doesn't seem to scan or do anything. I chose the default settings from the first screen and then on step 1 I chose my HDD that's damaged. In step 2, nothing happens. It doesn't scan or do anythong, and on step 3 it doesn't display any of my files. I have also tried TestDisk and what happens in TestDisk is that when I try to fix and rebuild the MFT, it says this: MFT and MFT mirror are bad. Failed to repair them. Here is the status of that HDD under Testdrive: I also tried this app and got no results when I tried to recover the files. I keep getting this error: Last but not least, I tried Recuva and that simply says it's unable to read the MFT. Any suggestions? I have tried various apps already and none of them seems to work.

Force Windows 7 to pin a file with no extension to the Jump List for Notepad

I want to add the "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" file to the Jump List for notepad.exe on a Windows 7 machine, but since the file does not have an extension there is no default program associated with it. This means it never shows up in the recent list and you also cannot drag it to the task bar to manually pin it to the start list. I've had problems with jump lists before, and there are ways to use the Registry or File system to change how Jump Lists work, but I haven't seen anything to manually edit a jump list yet. Is there any way to force an item to be pinned to the jump list when that item does not have a program associated with it?

Windows Photo Viewer needs more ram?

Ok, so i went to open a picture with the Windows Photo Viewer (Default) application and it told me this: Windows Photo Viewer can't display this picture because there might not be enough memory available on your computer. Close some programs that you aren't using or free some hard disk space (if it's almost full), and then try again. So looking at my 98% ram usage (thankyou VisualStudio x8 + SQL Server) I rebooted my computer. Now this is my load: And this is my hard-disk loadout: So now I go to load up that image again. SAME MESSAGE, what the heck? So apparantly 6gb isn't enough ram to open a 29k image that loads perfectly fine in MSPaint, Paint.NET, Photoshop It's a .png and it's not corrupt. So my question is: what gives?

Here i run the "httpcfg.exe set urlacl /u http://localhost:8731/WCFServerDLL/Service1/ /a" i get the result HttpSetServiceConfiguration completed with 0. what is the problem i got same error. can you give me a suggation.

XP boot timer=> set, but does nothing?

My PC has XP Pro and the boot.ini file looks like this: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows [operating systems] C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows="eXPee Pro" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect Up until about a week ago it would just time-out and boot normally. I haven't made any hardware changes at all. Now, when the system boots it just sits there and waits for me to hit -enter-. I've searched all over for explanations & possible causes, but found nothing which seems to relate. Anyone here have any idea what may have caused the timer to simply quit working like that ? (BTW, the system clock works just as it ever did and keeps time precisely.) Thanks.
