• Our plans for ASP.NET AJAX and SharePoint 2010

  The new MS Office and SharePoint release is just around the corner, and I want to assure everyone that we will provide full support for SP 2010 in our next RadControls release - Q2 2010. We have already put up a page with information about the new SP release. You can find all the information you need at the SharePoint product page on our site. In this post I will talk about the ASP.NET AJAX controls, but as you will see on the product page, we will also offer support for our Silverlight UI controls.   The most important thing I want to share is that the RadEditor for MOSS product will updated for the 2010 version and you can already get a beta version from your account (provided you have a license for the ASP.NET AJAX controls). I'll admit I'm a spring newbie, but you can correct me if I'm wrong, this one liner looks kinda fishy in a best practices sort of way: @RepositoryRestResource(collectionResourceRel="people"...) public interface PersonRepository extends PagingAndSortingRepository<Person, Long> For those who are unaware, the following does many things: It is an interface definition that can be registered in an application context as a jpa repository, automagically hooking up all the default CRUD operations within a persistence context (that is externally configured). and also configures default controller/request-mapping/handler functionality at the namespace "/people" relative to your configured dispatcher servlet-mapping. Here's my point. I just crossed 3 conceptual layers with one line of code! this feels against my seperation-of-concern instincts but i wanted to hear your opinion. And for the sake of being on a question and answer site, I would like to know whether there is a better way of seperating these different layers - Service, Data, Controllers - whilst maintaining as minimal configuration as possible

  We all know the story of the personal computer as a consumer-oriented product. But I just thought that real end user solution should have appeared before that time. So a product that was probably expensive, but allowed using it as a service charging for it, for example computer-terminal for transport time-table access or game machine. On the other site, the video terminals as we know them appeared not so long ago. So if there was something like this, this could be hardware/software most likely offering no interactivity, but probably printing some information based on user actions.

• Video conference/chat tool that can be embedded in own website needed

  We are looking for a means (a tool, a commercial service) to enable a closed user group to start a live video conference in a browser, as part of the company website. Something like Skype, but embedded and available for everybody that has access to the page into which the tool is embedded. Most services require registration and the creation of a chat room on their website, or, as Skype or similar solutions, the installation of an extra software. What we need is a solution with some kind of a "hidden login", performed by the site's client script (which knows who the user is and forwards the credentials to the service). Any suggestion?

• Using env variables with RewriteRule and ErrorDocument

  Hi, I'm having problems with the following while config. my Apache server to Rewrite some urls. SetEnv PATH_TO_DIR /directory RewriteRule ^%{PATH_TO_DIR}/([a-zA-Z0-9_\-]+)/([a-zA-Z0-9_\-\.]+)/?$ /index.php?dir=$1&file=$2 ErrorDocument 404 %{PATH_TO_DIR}/index.php?dir=null&file=error This conf. used to work perfectly fine until I used SetEnv PATH... etc. I need to use this because there are lots of rules, not just those. Can anyone point out my mistake? Apache returns %{PATH_TO_DIR}/index.php?dir=null&file=error when I try anything (www.site.com/foo/bar for instance). Apache returns the ErrorDocument if i just try to fetch the index. I know it's not a problem with the rewrite rules because they work when I remove the PATH_TO_DIR variable and just hard code it. • should i take Exam 70-515 or should i wait for Exam 70-480 ? [closed]

  As it states on Microsoft site exam 70-515 is scheduled to retire July 31, 2013. His successor is suppose to be exam 70-480 in my understanding. I know most of the stuff in exam 70-515 but it will take me like one mount to read the book from Microsoft Press Resource Center and get ready for the exam, also i will be paying for the exam not the company i work for. So i think it is better to start reading books and forums that concentrate on how and for what will be exam 70-480 then paying for something that will not be valued for ~ 1 year from now. Whats your thoughts/suggestions ?

• Ubuntu has LTS and normal version now. Does Lubuntu have the same?

  I am wondering if this is the right place for this question, but if not...then the moderators will surely tell me so. Anyway....there is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and the normal 12.10 version. Is that the same with Lubuntu? On their site, for some reason, they seem to be promoting the 12.10 version while for me an LTS is always more appealing. I am wondering if they have the same ideology as the Ubuntu team. UPDATE: Is it okay to talk about Lubuntu here at all? I understand that it is a flavour of Ubuntu...but still. Are they 2 very different teams?

  I need to get a e-commerce site up and running, but I really don't want to program it from the bottom up if I don't need to. I want to program it using ASP.NET MVC. I'm looking for a good open source alternative (or one for purchase if it's modular enough) that I can use as a base and enhance with the needed functions? It has to have all "normal" e-commerce functions, and also the possibility to integrate with a credit card API of my choice. If anyone have any recommendations for me here, I would appreciate it :)

• E-commerce for custom orders/customer image upload

  We have a client that needs an e-commerce site set up pretty quickly. As I have no experience with e-commerce, I am looking for some guidance. Basically, the two big features we need are: Ability for customer to add info about order (example: the name the customer wants to be put on the customizable product they ordered) Ability for customer to upload photo of product to be customized I hope this makes sense. Right now I am really looking into Shopify, but I can't tell if it does everything we need. I know you can add order notes when checking out, but not sure about image upload (maybe it can be added as an app through the API?).

• Risk for hosting SEO links. [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: SEO drawbacks of having paid links without nofollow? A few companies are will to pay us for links on our homepage. I am assuming these are legitimate sites although they are unrelated to our sites content. Would google penalize our site for having these links? We definitely need the revenue and we view this as selling advertising space- but I don't want to kill our good ranking. Does anyone have any insight, is it possible to ask google directly?

• Tor and Google Analytics - how to track?

  I make a lot of use of Google Analytics - Google has reasonable tracking for location of users so I can tell where users come from. I know it is not 100% but it gives an idea. In the wake of Prism it is possible that more people will make use of networks such as tor for anonymous browsing. I have no problem with this, people can wear tin foil hats while browsing my site for all I care, but it will lead to more erroneous stats. Is there any way to flag traffic as coming from TOR, so I can filter location reports not to include it, and to get an idea of the percentage of traffic which does use it? Has anyone actually tried this?

  I have a question about redirecting a subdomain of a blog hosted on Wordpress.com to an external URL. Given the following: 1) I own a domain name foobar.com purchased from another registrar (not from Wordpress.com). 2) I have purchased the Custom Domain option on Wordpress.com, and have completed the configuration to make foobar.com resolve to foobar.wordpress.com. 3) I will establish an external site for a store, such as store.yahoo.com/foobar. 4) I want to redirect the subdomain store.foobar.com to store.yahoo.com/foobar. How do I set up the Custom DNS records within Wordpress.com to accomplish this subdomain redirection, while leaving foobar.com pointed to my Wordpress blog? I suspect that the CNAME directive is involved, but I cannot figure out the required syntax. Thanks... JGB

• Is Java's ElementCollection Considered a Bad Practice?

  From my understanding, an ElementCollection has no primary key, is embedded with the class, and cannot be queried. This sounds pretty hefty, but it allows me the comfort of writing an enum class which also helps with internationalization (using the enum key for lookup in my ResourceBundle). Example: We have a user on a media site and he can choose in which format he downloads the files @Entity @Table(name = "user") public class User { /* snip other fields */ @Enumerated @ElementCollection( targetClass = DownloadFilePreference.class, fetch = FetchType.EAGER ) @CollectionTable(name = "download_file_preference", joinColumns = @JoinColumn(name = "user_id") ) @Column(name = "name") private Set<DownloadFilePreference> downloadFilePreferences = new HashSet<>(); } public enum DownloadFilePreference { MP3, WAV, AIF, OGG; } This seems pretty great to me, and I suppose it comes down to "it depends on your use case", but I also know that I'm quite frankly only an initiate when it comes to Database design. Some best practices suggest to never have a class without a primary key- even in this case? It also doesn't seem very extensible- should I use this and gamble on the chance I will never need to query on the FilePreferences?

  I’m creating an MMA website. There’s the home page, there’s a fighters section whose index page lists fighters in the organisation, and then each fighter has a profile page. The URL structure is like this: / /fighters/ /fighters/john-doe My question is: on the fighter’s profile page I want to link to the fighters index page (/fighters). In my HTML page, which meta tag would be the most appropriate? <link href="/fighters/" rel="index" /> Or: <link href="/fighters/" rel="contents" /> I’m having trouble distinguishing which would be best, and whether rel="index" would be the index for the whole site or the current page/section I’m viewing?

• Is there a decent way to maintain development of wordpress sites using the same base?

  We've been churning out wordpress sites for a while, and we'd like to keep a base repository that can be used when starting a new project, as well as updating existing sites with changes to the wordpress base. Am I wrong in assuming this would be a good thing? We take care of updating the sites, so having a common base would make this easier. I've been looking at solutions using git, such as forking a base repository and using it to pull changes to the wordpress base, but committing the site to it's own repository. Or maybe, if it's possible, storing the base as a git submodule, but this would require storing themes and plugins outside of that. Is there any common way to go about this kind of website development?
