    The next tutorial that has been thoroughly restructured and rewritten is: NetBeans Platform Feed Reader Tutorial Originally written by Rich Unger, it was one of the very first NetBeans Platform tutorials that ever existed. In this particular rewrite, the entire structure of the tutorial has changed, in an attempt to make the flow more "bite size", rather than a big lump. Also, thanks to recent NetBeans Platform changes, there are no Bundle files anymore, all Strings are declared via @Messages annotations. Theoretically, the browser in the application could be a JavaFX WebView, though the browser part of the application isn't a central theme of the tutorial, hence only a reference is made to the JavaFX alternative.   • Is there any way to keep launchers synchronized among machines?

    Most of us use more than one machine for our purpose. The scenario for me is to use one at home, another at office. When comes to the launcher at left, the applications get added in chronological order. You can click and drag an application in launcher, but this is a tedious process. If your application placements are different among the machines, you loose the intuitive mouse click. You need to spend a few seconds to find out where actually the launcher is before you click on it. Is there any way I can keep the launcher applications (at least the locked ones) synchronized among machines? Thanks.

  • Versioning Java APIs in a non-web context

    I have modular java application which consists of 40 modules. Some of these modules needs to expose external APIs which other modules or any external integration should be using. The system runs as a desktop application and each module is bundled as a separate jar file. My plan is to bundle the external api as a separate jar. But now the question is: how can I maintain multiple versions of the same API to keep backward compatibility in cases where it can co-exist? Are there any de facto standards on handling APIs versioning out of a web context ?

  • How do I reserve bandwidth?

    In windows there is a registry entry called Reserve bandwidth. With that system was reserved some bandwidth from my INTERNET connection so that when i am downloading all other connected application can run with minimum INTERNET support. Like reserve bandwidth help to keep other application (all kind of messenger) on-line when i was downloading. But in Ubuntu my connection speed is good enough but problem arise when i am downloading a file, all my messenger gets off-line status. Can any one tell how can i fix such problem? Or why this is happening?

  • How to deal with a ten days debugging session? [on hold]

    Ten days ago, I fixed a bug on a large application and the hot fix has created a disappearing of some data from the user point of view. Data are not deleted, but have been set to hidden status. It could be possible to get the data back, but the thing seems to be hard: I've already spent 10 days to understand and reproduce the problem (mostly with complex SQL queries but sometimes it is necessary to update the database to test the application logic). Is 10 days a normal amount of time for these kind of problems? Should we keep on and retrieve the data or should we tell these users sorry for the loss, but your data have disappeared? Any advice on when to stop searching how to solve the issue?

    I have a question about designing MVC app architecture. Let's say our application has three main categories of views (items of type 1, items of type 2...). And we have three (or more in future) types of users - Admins, let's say Moderators and typical Users. And in the future there might be more of them. Admins have full access to app, Moderators can visit only 2/3 type of items, and Users can visit only basic type of items. Should I divide my controllers/views/whatever like this: Items "A", Items "B", Items "C", then make them 100% finished and at the end add access privileges? Pros: DRY option Cons Conditional expressions in views Or another options: Items "A" / Admin, Items "A" / Moderator / Items "B" Admin ...? Pros: Divided parts of application for specific user (is that pros?) Cons: A lot of repeated code I don't have great experience in planning such things so it would nice if you can give me some tips or links to learn something about it.

I also used a SQLite database for my data.     I have an application called foo that runs as root. The foo calls system function to execute the other application which show tray icon using Qt. The Systray Icon Example in Qt is working properly in user account but not in root. I run the following command to drop privileges: system(“exec su -l user -c ‘export DISPLAY=:0; /opt/systray &’”); However, the systray icon doesn’t appear in Ubuntu 13.10 & 14.04. Is there any way to display this systray in this case except for the solution that uses a PPA that comes with to re-enable the systray whitelist?

You can search for the application in the Ubuntu Software Centre and install it there, or use apt with the official Ubuntu repositories. You can find a PPA or a third-party repo, and install it from there. What are the pros and cons of each method? Please discuss security implications, frequency of updates and program reliability of each method in your answer.

    We are worried about the security of our website containing the login-button to our saas-application. Security measures put in place for our application won't do us much good if the website is hacked. The login button could be redirected to some malicious copy of our app. The product website is maintained by people outside the dev team. Those people are not too knowledgable concerning security. We (dev-team) could mantain the website ourselves but that would be a large burden on our small team. How is this usually handled?

  • Screen rendering problems after upgrading to 12.10

    Since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10 I'm suffering severe rendering issues in unity: Some parts of any application (for instance Firefox, or emacs, etc) are blank, or are not rendered, or are blinking. Some fonts in an application are not correct rendered, maybe only some part (see Eclipse screenshot). There is some shadows in desktop background. It's something that occurs from time to time (it's works great for hours and suddenly start to give this rendering problems). I was trying to find a bug in launchpad but without success. My card (using i915 module): 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0042] (rev 02) I've tried to reset compiz/unity or gnome but does not help.
