• New LAMP server, all links redirecting to localhost

  I've got a very frustrating issue with what should be a bespoke install of Ubuntu 12.04, the LAMP config provided in apt-get install lamp-server^, and a web application called The Fascinator. After installing those three things and making no changes to any of them, I can access the application through a public IP (http://lib-hf1.lib.sfu.ca:9997 for the curious), but the domain of every link within that page is changed to localhost, including links to images and CSS, so nothing loads correctly and all of the links are broken. I've Googled around and found some people who appear to be having this issue with WP and Drupal, but nothing makes reference to a system-wide setting, and no one using the Fascinator seems to be having this issue. I have a faint memory that this might have something to do with mod_rewrite, but I'm pretty well stumped.

• How to check system performance?

  Hi all, I am a new Ubuntu user and really like the look and the features of the OS. However, I have a feeling that the performance could be better. With that I mean: Somehow the scrolling within firefox of sites seems laggy. I do not know how I should measure it but there is a difference. Not that it is unusable but it is aggravating. Java programs are running really slow. As a comparison (I know it is not a fair one), I tried to run a game using wine. The graphic specifications using windows were much higher (1600x1200) with a high level of detail, and in ubuntu with the lowest level of detail 1024x768 was the maximum. (My graphics card is a GeForce GTS 450 with 1gb RAM) Coming to my question: Is there a way to measure the performance of 3D acceleration, java applets, firefox scrolling etc. with a tool and compare it with lets say a windows OS or other users having almost the same hardware? Maybe it is a setup issue where some fundamental drivers are missing or something!? Any help, link, suggestion is appreciated! Cherio Woltan

  I use Blender3D, but the answer might not API-exclusive. I have some matrices I need to assign to PoseBones. The resulting pose looks fine when there is no bone hierarchy (parenting) and messed up when there is. I've uploaded an archive with sample blend of the rigged models, text animation importer and a test animation file here: http://www.2shared.com/file/5qUjmnIs/sample_files.html Import the animation by selecting an Armature and running the importer on "sba" file. Do this for both Armatures. This is how I assign the poses in the real (complex) importer: matrix_bases = ... # matrix from file animation_matrix = matrix_basis * pose.bones['mybone'].matrix.copy() pose.bones[bonename].matrix = animation_matrix If I go to edit mode, select all bones and press Alt+P to undo parenting, the Pose looks fine again. The API documentation says the PoseBone.matrix is in "object space", but it seems clear to me from these tests that they are relative to parent bones. Final 4x4 matrix after constraints and drivers are applied (object space) I tried doing something like this: matrix_basis = ... # matrix from file animation_matrix = matrix_basis * (pose.bones['mybone'].matrix.copy() * pose.bones[bonename].bone.parent.matrix_local.copy().inverted()) pose.bones[bonename].matrix = animation_matrix But it looks worse. Experimented with order of operations, no luck with all. • send apache request identifier to backend when using mod_rewrite

  I'm using mod_rewrite to send requests from the client to a backend server. I've seen in the rewrite log that Apache sets a sid (Session Identifier?) and rid (request identifier?) and shows them in the logs. Would it be possible to send the rid to the backend server as a http header? that way I can link a request in the apache with a request in the backend server. • How to establish the real-time communication between Shopping cart running MySQL and Internal System Running PostgreSQL [closed]

  I am thinking about the way of establishing some-sort of real-time connection between MySQLpowered shopping cart and internal system that is running on PostgreSQL. Could you give me some sort of insight on this topic? For example, I can write some sort of csv export application, then enable remote MySQL for over the internet connection and then import csv to mysql directly from PC. Or upload csv and run cron on server. But this way of import-export causing delays; so I would like to link databased (or some msort). I have never done it before and would like to hear some opinions about this. Another way "just a thought" might to implement triggers that would initiate the update process via csv; but again, I would like to avoid csv. Do you have any good advise? Maybe some specific examples?

• new web site on windows 2008 server with IIS7 - does not work

  Hi guys, I have a new domain: www.biografica.ro which was bought 3 months ago but never used still then. I've bought a server with Windows 2008 server instaWeb Server (IIS). I've added a new site in C:\inetpu\wwwroot directory and did the setting (assigned the default ip to www.biografica.ro host etc -i've did on IIS6 one year ago, so i think i know to set up it correctly)... The problem is that the default site created by IIS instalation is working, but mine is not. It is started but is says: This link appears to be broken in Chrome and "The webpage cannot be found" (in IE). Do you know guys what i;ve done wrong? As i know a domain takes time to propagate but i think locally it should work.. Please help...i've spent 3 hours and cannot find a way...:(

• Cannot move/drag/drop windows/items in remote VNC session

  I find it a little hard to believe that no one here has asked this question, I tried searching for it but it isn't asked, so here goes: I setup a Ubuntu desktop computer with VNC to use as a server. And use another Ubuntu desktop computer to VNC into it. The rest of the VNC works ok, but drag and drop with mouse is gone. Thus I can not move windows, or drag and drop items via VNC. I am using the default remote desktop in System - Preferences to setup my server. And use Remmina as my client. The same happens using MS Windows's VNC clients connecting to my Ubuntu desktop. I did a bit of searching on google, and there are actually a lot of reports regarding this issue. But, oddly there is no solution. There are even bug reports made for this since Ubuntu 9.10, yet here it still is in Ubuntu 11.04. There have been suggestions that the bugs is in gtk, as see in link below: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1497635&page=2 libgtk2.0-0 stable(lenny) -> DnD works libgtk2.0-0 lenny-backport (libgtk2.0-0_2.18.6-1~bpo50+1_i386) -> DnD still works libgtk2.0-0 testing (libgtk2.0-0_2.20.1-2_i386) -> DnD broken please don't give answers such as "use NX", "use ssh -x" or "use x11vnc". I am aware that some people don't have this problem with x11vnc, and I have setup x11vnc before, but i can't for this setup. I am setting this up so Windows only friends/families can use it.

• Configuring Apache for multiple clients

  Last week I had a question here about suexec / suphp but I tried to accomplish too much. I'm going to narrow the scope a bit and try again. I'd like to configure a LAMP server to host multiple clients. I'd like it to seem (from the client's viewpoint) just like any other shared hosting environment. Web sites in their home directory, no need to muck around with file ownerships to get pages served, etc. It would seem that a configuration that involves suexec and suphp is the way to go(?) I'm specifically looking for a current/modern guide on how to accomplish this (I'll be using CentOS if it matters) and I'm afraid I need more than a link to Apache docs. Are there any good How-To's out there? The few I've found have been pretty out of date, but it is quite possible my search was weak.

• Why is there nobody talking about an alternative to HTML & CSS? [closed]

  HTML is such an old and cumbersome language, which was intended just to markup text. Today it's very rare to see a static HTML website, or a site with only text or a very simple layout. As a web developer I find it inconvenient to use HTML & CSS, very repetitive and cumbersome. I think that for a lot of website it could be simplified a lot. Tim Berners-Lee (W3) wrote a document named "The World Wide Web: Past, Present and Future" in August 1996 ... though HTML will be considered part of the established infrastructure (rather than an exciting new toy), there will always be new formats coming along, and it may be that a more powerful and perhaps a more consistent set of formats will eventually displace HTML. So, more than 15 years later, HTML is still here and it's here to stay. Why? Why searching for xml alternatives brings so much relevant result, but searching for html alternatives brings almost none relevant results? Answers like "it's too hard to change a standard" aren't answering the question since a lot of new standards emerged since the initiation of the web. I'm also not searching for answers that suggest using tools to simplify the process or formats that anyhow depends on HTML or CSS, technologies that currently require a plugin and not even trying to become an open standards (like Flash) aren't an answer neither. BTW, here are 2 articles written more than two years ago as food for thought, it might help with writing a better answers. "HTML, CSS, and Web Development Practices: Past, Present, and Future" describing a very related problem, by Jens O. Meiert. "A Brief History of HTML" by Scott Reynen, Here is a quote from the end: So now you can answer questions about HTML5 without even looking at the draft, which is handy, because the draft is 400+ pages long. Why is there a new tag in HTML5? Because some browser vendor (maybe the one that also owns a large video site) wanted it. Why are there so many scriptable interface elements in HTML5? Because some browser vendor (maybe the one selling phones without Flash support) wants them. Why is there no support for RDFa in HTML5? Apparently no browser vendor wanted it. Is that the future?

• Privacy Protection in Oracle IRM 11g

  Another innovation in Oracle IRM 11g is an in-built privacy policy challenge. By design, one of the many things that Oracle IRM does, of course, is collect audit information about how and where sealed documents are being used - user names, machine identifiers and so on. Many customers consider that this has privacy implications that the user should be invited to accept as a condition of service use - for the protection of both of the user and the service from avoidable controversy. So, in 11g IRM, when a new user connects to a server for the first time, they can expect to see the following privacy policy dialog. The dialog provides a configurable URL that the customer can use to publish the privacy policy for their IRM service. The policy might clarify what data is being collected and stored, what use that data might be put to, and so on as required by the service owner's legal advisers. In previous releases, you could construct an equivalent capability, and some customers did, but this innovation makes it much easier to do - you simply write a privacy policy and publish it as a web page for which the dialog automatically provides a link. This is another example of how Oracle IRM anticipates not just the security requirements of a customer, but also the broader requirements of service provisioning.

• Password-free logins using your email address only?

  The state of logins is horrendous. With each site having it's own rules for passwords, it can be very hard to remember what variation you used on any given site. Logins are pure pain. One thing I love about Craigslist is that it did away with logins altogether. I know this design may not suit every site, but there's something to their design that beckons to be repeated. OpenID is great on sites that have adopted it, but it's still not standard. Would it be feasible/wise to use an email address as a login and provide no password? The site would send a short-term key directly to your email address. You click on the link and you're in. When you're done, you "logout" and your key is terminated. I've toyed with this idea before. What concerns (i.e. spammers, bots, etc.) would make this impractical or unsafe and could they be overcome?

• Why I don't use SSIS checkpoint files

  In a recent discussion in regard to general ETL best practises the subject of checkpoint files as a means for package restartability came up and I stated that I was dead against using them. For anyone that may care, here is why: Configuring them is distinctly unintuitive (that's a matter of opinion but if you follow the link I'll wager that you will agree) they don't make any allowance for loop iterations they cannot store variables of type Object they are limited in ability. There are many scenarios where you may want to execute certain containers regardless of whether the package is started from a checkpoint file but the current usage model does not allow for this. they are ignored by eventhandlers, which wouldn't be so bad if there were a way to toggle this behaviour in certain scenarios they dont work properly I'll expand on the last bullet point. I have encountered situations where the behaviour for tasks executing concurrently is unpredictable. That is, sometimes the completion of a task that executes concurrently with a failed/failing task will make it into the checkpoint file and sometimes it won't. This is near-impossible to reproduce but it does happen as my good friend John Welch will hopefully concur (if he is reading). Is anyone out there making successful use of checkpoint files within SSIS? I would be interested in knowing about that if so. @Jamiet

  Hi, I am redirecting my question to superuser from stackoverflow: I have a http streaming link which gives me .flv streaming feed. I want to convert that and access in my iPhone program. How can i do that? I want to have a desktop software like VLC and input this streaming feed URL and convert to iPhone supported and stream again to iPhone. I tried VLC with H.264 and Mpeg-1 audio, but seems to be it doesn't give the supported format, so as iPhone program doesn't play the video. Could someone please guide me how can i setup a desktop software which can stream iPhone supported file? Thanks in advance.

• Rotating an image in OneNote 2010

  I scanned a brochure to PDF. It was portrait & should be landscape so I rotated the page in Acrobat and saved the PDF. I sent it to OneNote 2010 using the "printer", and it shows up in portrait mode in my OneNote file. I cannot find anyway to rotate the picture within OneNote 2010. I did find a link to an image rotator add-in for OneNote 2007, which installed for me but does not actually rotate the image. Has anyone solved this problem?

• Google Chrome Automatic Page Load

  Google Chrome keeps loading the second page of certain websites which is helpful on sites like Netflix so that instead of clicking on a link for page 2, I can just continue scrolling down and it'll automatically have the next page ready for me. But on online clothing sites, it just gets backed up loading all the next pages, misplacing links and loading the next page so that it actually replaces the page I'm trying to view literally every millisecond. Considering clothing sites generally have upwards of 20 to 200 pages of clothing, this is really annoying since Chrome tries to load all of them. How do I turn off the automatic page load???

• Good Scoop: The PeopleSoft/IBM Backstory

Last week I stumbled across an interesting blog post from Chris Heller of a PeopleSoft consulting shop in San Ramon, CA called Grey Sparling. I don't know these guys. But Chris, who apparently used to work on the PeopleTools team, wrote a great article on a pre-acquisition, would-be deal between IBM and PeopleSoft that would have standardized PeopleSoft on IBM technology. The behind-the-scenes perspective is interesting. His commentary on the challenges that the company and PeopleSoft customers would have encountered if the deal had gone through was also interesting: · "No common ownership. It's hard enough to get large groups of people to work together when they work for the same company, but with two separate companies it is much, much harder. Even within Oracle, progress on Fusion applications was slow until Thomas Kurian took over Fusion applications in addition to Fusion middleware." · "No customer buy-in. PeopleSoft customers weren't asking for a conversion to WebSphere, so the fact that doing that could have helped PeopleSoft stay independent wouldn't have meant much to them, especially since the cost of moving to whatever a "PeopleSoft built on WebSphere" would have been significant." · "No executive buy-in. This is related to the previous point, but it's worth calling out separately. If Oracle had walked away and the deal with IBM had gone through, and PeopleSoft customers got put through the wringer as part of WebSphere move, all of the PeopleSoft project teams would be put in the awkward position of explaining to their management why these additional costs and headaches were happening. Essentially they would need to "sell" the partnership internally to their own management team. That's not a fun conversation to have." I'm not surprised that something like this was in the works. But I did find the inside scoop and Heller's perspective on the challenges particularly interesting. • How do I align the bottom edges of two monitors with xrandr?

  I have two outputs that I'd like to use on my laptop: LVDS1 - 1366x768 HDMI1 - 1920x1080 I set my monitors up like so: xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto --output HDMI1 --auto --right-of LVDS1 This is all well and good, but my laptop sits considerably lower than my external monitor, and with the top edges of the screens being aligned, it makes the jump from one screen to the other rather unintuitive. Is there a way I can align the bottom edges instead? I thought I could use the --pos flag to do this, but I have tried and not seen any difference (perhaps I do not know how to use it properly). EDIT: Solved. Thanks to tink's link, I deconstructed the Python script and discovered the way to do this is as follows: xrandr --output LVDS1 --pos 0x312 # 312 = 1280 - 768 xrandr --output HDMI1 --pos 1366x0 Not sure I understand exactly what the --pos flags are doing here, but it at least works!
