• Configuring visual subversion to exclude

  I have been searching for any documentation on how to exclude files for visual svn but have not found any. All the documentation I find seems to not match my file structure or I am missing some files/directories referenced. For example the only file I find with configuration items in it seems to be completely commented out and missing the miscellaneous section as well as any auto properties enable - etc... Ultimately I need to exclude some files so that my development can continue without SVN errors. I am constantly receiving errors for pbuser and other project files and would like to make sure this is not causing some of my other headaches. • How do I conditionally compile C code snippets to my Perl module?

  I have a module that will target several different operating systems and configurations. Sometimes, some C code can make this module's task a little easier, so I have some C functions that I would like to bind the code. I don't have to bind the C functions -- I can't guarantee that the end-user even has a C compiler, for instance, and it's generally not a problem to failover gracefully to a pure Perl way of accomplishing the same thing -- but it would be nice if I could call the C functions from the Perl script. Still with me? Here's another tricky part. Just about all of the C code is system specific -- a function written for Windows won't compile on Linux and vice-versa, and the function that does a similar thing on Solaris will look totally different. #include <some/Windows/headerfile.h> int foo_for_Windows_c(int a,double b) { do_windows_stuff(); return 42; } #include <path/to/linux/headerfile.h> int foo_for_linux_c(int a,double b) { do_linux_stuff(7); return 42; } Furthermore, even for native code that targets the same system, it's possible that only some of them can be compiled on any particular configuration. #include <some/headerfile/that/might/not/even/exist.h> int bar_for_solaris_c(int a,double b) { call_solaris_library_that_might_be_installed_here(11); return 19; } But ideally we could still use the C functions that would compile with that configuration. • Should I be backing up a webapp's data to another host continuously ?

  I have webapp in development. I need to plan for what happens if the host goes down. I will lose some very recent session status (which I can live with) and everything else should be persistently stored in the database. If I am starting up again after an outage, can I expect a good host to reconstruct the database to within minutes of where I was up to ? Or seconds ? Or should I build in a background process to continually mirror the database elsewhere ? What is normal / sensible ? Obviously a good host will have RAID and other redundancy so the likelihood of total loss should be low, and if they have periodic backups I should lose only very recent stuff but this is presumably likely to be designed with almost static web content in mind, and my site is transactional with new data being filed continuously (with a customer expectation that I don't ever lose it). Any suggestions / advice ? Are there off the shelf frameworks for doing this ? (I'm primarily working in Java) And should I just plan to save the data or should I plan to have an alternative usable host implementation ready to launch in case the host doesn't come back up in a suitable timeframe ?

I use VPN to connect to machine Y with user id 'abc' and work on SQL in remote desktop. how can i run sql scripts across domains? I use this in a custom activity in my TFS build template as the last step to run the scripts in the target database which is in domain D2. i'm getting this error: "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)" is it possible to connect to the DB using the admin user ID of machine Y in domain D2?

• Guidance on E-commerce in a Python Framework

  I am looking for guidance in making decisions on using Python for E-commerce. My reasoning to use Python in the first place is i do a lot of 3D so it's a real help to use Python for web server side as well as 3D so I do not need to learn a new language. When I say E-commerce i mean the logic behind displaying products and a check out system that is Robust....and yes I really want to build this myself so I can change it. I do not want to use an out the box solution that costs a lot of money every month. I want control of server side, data bases, e-commerce etc. My questions are: What Frameworks are out there? I looked at previous questions on stackoverflow but only found old posts about Sachmo and Get paid. What is the learning path, I do not want to make a mistake that costs six months of studying? Python then Django? How long if I spent 10 hours a day studying this would it take to get up and running? I write javaScript badly, so I am not a complete noob, I understand the basics of programming languages. many thanks in advance

• A problem of a repeated parameter in the pagination links?

  The problem is that when I load page 2 for example the URL becomes: http://domain.com/index.php?restaurant-id=45&currentpage=2 And that's fine but when I get to page 3 it becomes: http://domain.com/index.php?restaurant-id=45&currentpage=2&currentpage=3 And so on, it adds one more currentpage parameter everytime a new page is loaded from the pagination links! I wonder how this problem can be fixed?   I have geography pages for two types of business listings. Each page goes from state, county, city, but I need to have the same geography shared between two types of business. My two business types are dentist and chiropractors. I am trying to have a permalink structure like this: enter code here xyz.com/dentist/alabama enter code here xyz.com/dentist/alabama/polk-county/ enter code here xyz.com/chiropractors/alabama/ enter code here xyz.com/chiropractors/alabama/polk-county/ I originally was going to load the geography as pages and subpages, but with that method I cannot get the permalink separated by the type chiropractor and dentist. So now I have created a custom post type one for chiropractor and one for dentist which give me the permalink xyz.com/dentist and xyz.com/chiropractor. My question is now how to handle my category geography page. I was wondering if in wordpress it is possible to create a shell page such as xyz.com/dentist/[state]/ and then through php dynamically build a page for each state? So where it shows [state] it will be replaced with the actual state such as alabama, california etc when that specific page is viewed. But the shell page is just 1 page in the database. If so could someone give me a basic explanation on how to instruct a programmer to do this? Thank you.

• Calling a method from another view in objective-c. (iphone sdk).

  Hello. I am currently creating a multi-view game on the iPhone platform. I have my main view start to play some background music upon loading. I then go to another view and start the game. I am trying to get the background music from the original view to stop once I start the game. I am having trouble getting the stop playing music message to my original view. Here is the relevant info: The main view where the sound is played from is just a subView of the programViewController class called *viewController. The heading is in the programAppDelegate class. The sound is done using the AVAudioPlayer class and plays fine when the program starts up and when I navigate to other subviews that are added on by going through the menu system. In the view that I want to start the game, I attempt to call the instance of the class to turn of the player but anytime I use this format of code: [viewController #######]; It gives a build error of "viewController undeclared" no matter what I put after the "viewController" in the message.I have attempted to import the programAppDelegate.h file but it still gives the same error. I realize this might be a simple misunderstanding of the objective-c language but I cannot find any info on this issue. I am a recent convert from Java so I am trying to wrap my head around everything. Thank you for your time!

• Dynamic External Program in debug tab vs2008

  I am playing with NServiceBus using the generic host; specifically I'm working on having 2 different configurations, a debug configuration that logs to the console and a release version that logs to metabase (I'm using VS2008). I had just made some code changes (commented out a logging statement), but it was still showing in the log when I ran my solution. I eventually figured out that I had switched configuration to release, made my change, then built. I think the change isn’t being picked up because in the debug tab of my project properties I have the following (abbreviated) path to the generic host: C:...\Inventory\bin\Debug\NServiceBus.Host.exe Notice it specifically points to the debug directory. So basically even though I’m in release config it’s firing up the host in the debug directory which I think is then using the dll's in the debug directory (which is why my changes didn't get picked up). I tried to come up with a workaround, but have been unsuccessful. VS Macros (like $(Configuration)) and relative pathing are not allowed here. http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/422223/relative-path-not-allowed-in-c-project-debug-properties-window Any ideas? I hope this doesn’t require a custom build task.

• Could git do not store history of specific folders when working with git-svn?

  In short: Is there a way to disable storing full history for specific folders in git-svn repo? We have pretty large SVN repo with big checkout. I would like to migrate it to Git for my local development, because Git speeds up update and status commands orders of magnitude. When I simply do git svn clone it creates very big repo. Big enough to be bigger then my whole HDD. The problem lies in binary directories for which history is too large. Latest binaries are required for proper local build, but history is not required at all for my development process. I will never change them myself. I would like to store only latest versions for specific folders, or may be a history, but for no more than a week. I could only found filter for git svn fetch, which excludes specific folders at all. This is not exactly what I need. It's OK with me to have Cron task which deletes history from specific folders, but I do not know how to make one. Also Cron does not solve problem of first git svn clone. P.S. SVN repository structure could not be changed by any means.

  Hi guys! I have to get into Linux ASAP and realy mean ASAP. I have installed Cygwin but as allways - things dont go as easy as one would like. First problem i enconter was - i choose KDE package, but there is no sign of KDE files anywhere in cygwin folder. How do i run KDE windows. Currently startx fires, but all looks ugly! My desire is to download and run Qt Creator. Seems that there is no cygwin package, but downloading source and compiling is good to go. Only that i have forgoten every linux command i ever knew! :D Please - what are default commands u use on linux? What does exec do? what ./ stands for? What is directory strucutre and why there is such mess in bin folder? Thanks god - i have windows over cygwin, so downloading files is not a problem, but again -how do i unpack them in linux style and how to i build? simply issue "make" command from folder, where i extracted files? Please help!

• Trouble defining method for Javascript class definition.

  I'm somewhat new to object oriented programming in Javascript and I'm trying to build a handler object and library for a list of items I get back from an API call. Ideally, I'd like the library functions to be members of the handler class. I'm having trouble getting my class method to work however. • Optimizing landing pages

  In my current project (Rails 2.3) we have a collection of 1.2 million keywords, and each of them is associated with a landing page, which is effectively a search results page for a given keywords. Each of those pages is pretty complicated, so it can take a long time to generate (up to 2 seconds with a moderate load, even longer during traffic spikes, with current hardware). The problem is that 99.9% of visits to those pages are new visits (via search engines), so it doesn't help a lot to cache it on the first visit: it will still be slow for that visit, and the next visit could be in several weeks. I'd really like to make those pages faster, but I don't have too many ideas on how to do it. A couple of things that come to mind: build a cache for all keywords beforehand (with a very long TTL, a month or so). However, building and maintaing this cache can be a real pain, and the search results on the page might be outdated, or even no longer accessible; given the volatile nature of this data, don't try to cache anything at all, and just try to scale out to keep up with traffic. I'd really appreciate any feedback on this problem.

• Retrieve E-mail from server (pop3) by date for filtering on subject or body in C#

  I have a piece of monitoring software I am writing which needs to retrieve e-mails sent to an address for a certain day so that I can filter them by a regex in the subject or body. I don't need to retrieve the entire message, only the subject and body for all messages on a given day so that I can evaluate them with a regular expression for a token. I looked at EAGetMail as a solution, but their implementation doesn't do what I need to to do. I can only get all information on mail, which only has the size and index. I would need it by subject, but even then I don't want to get everything in inbox. If I went with this solution I have to get all mail, and then retrieve each mail message individually to evaluate the subject and body. This is not ideal. I also looked at OpenPop.Net, but it too does not have a targeted retrieval for today's messages only. Can I even do what I want without looping through every single email on the server until I find a match? What is the best way to accomplish what I am trying to do? Am I going to have to build a custom web request to get the data I want? Also, I looked at Chilkat, but I am looking for a free solution, even if it means building the http request myself.

• Choose 'better' or more familiar technologies for a new project?

  I am looking to start work on a brand-new project, something I've been thinking about for a while as my first independent sellable project. It's broadly speaking a web-based service application, and my first choice, server-language is quite easy... I know Java pretty well from working on Java web-apps in the past. However my experience doing web-apps involved JSP, Servlets and JSTL... I know the ideas behind newer technologies like Hibernate/Spring but have never used them. So we wrote our own DAOs, handled AJAX by writing special mini-JSP pages that generated XML/JSON pages, etc. I'm not hugely into the idea that Spring/Hibernate are the 'only' or 'right' way to do any Java web-project, but they are widely used. On the other hand, not only would trying to learn these increase initial development time, but I'd be using my learning attempts to build a production system. I remember one of Joel's early articles said (I'll paraphrase since I can't find it) "regardless what's cool, always use the technologies that the lead developer (or dev team?) knows best" I wondered what people thought about that? ps: should this be CW?

• Is there a way in VS2008 (c#) to see all the possible exception types that can originate from a meth

  Is there a way in VS2008 IDE for c# to see all the possible exception types that can possibly originate from a method call or even for an entire try-catch block? I know that intellisense or the object browser tells me this method can throw these types of exceptions but is there another way than using the object browser everytime? Something more accessible when coding? Furthermore, I don't think intellisense or the object browser do anything more than read the XML code comments. Shouldn't it be possible to scan a class's source and find all the exception types that can be thrown. (Forget path-ing based on method input, just scan the code for exception types) Am I wrong? Extending this idea, you should be able to hover over the 'try' or 'catch' keywords and present a tooltip with all the types of exceptions that can be thrown. My question boils down to, does a VS2008 add on like this exist? Does VS2010 do this perhaps? If not, could you implement it the way I've described, by scanning the class code for thrown exception types and would people find it useful. Exceptions bubble up so you have to scan every bit of code every method call, which I guess could be impractical, though I suppose you could build an index the first time and increase your speed that way. (It might be a cool little project....)

  We are in design phase of a project whose goal is replatforming an ASP classic application to ASP.Net 4.0. The system needs to be entirely web based. There are several new requirements for the new system that make this a challenging project: The system needs to be database independent. It must, at version 1.0, support MS SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, Postgres and DB2. The system must be able to allow easy reporting from the database by third party reporting packages. The system must allow an administrative end user to create their own tables in the database through the web based interface. The system must allow an administrative end user to design/configure a user interface (web based) where they can select tables and fields in the system (either our system's core tables or their own custom tables created in #3) The system must allow an administrative end user to create and maintain relationships between these custom created tables, and also between these tables and our system's core tables. The system must allow an administrative end user to create business rules that will enforce validation, show/hide UI elements, block certain actions based on the identity of specific users, specific user groups or privileges. Essentially it's a system that has some core ticket tracking functionality, but allows the end user to extend the interface, business rules and the database. Is this possible to build in a .Net, Web based environment? If so, what do you think the level of effort would be to get this done? We are currently a 6 person shop, with 2.5 full time developers.

  Hi I have to send a two-dimensional JavaScript Array to a PHP page. Indeed, I'm working on a form-builder, in which the user can add or remove fields. These fields are added (or removed) using JavaScript (jQuery). When the user is done and hit a 'publish' button, I have to get all the fields concerned and send them to a PHP page which would build a real form with it. • filtering search results with php

  Hello, Cant really find any useful information on this through Google so hope someone here with some knowledge can help. I have a set of results which are pulled from a multi dimensional array. Currently the array key is the price of a product whilst the item contains another array which contains all the product details. key=>Item(name=>test, foo=>bar) So currently when I list the items I just order by the key, smallest first and it lists the products smallest price first. However I want to build on this so that when a user sees the results they can choose other ordering options like list all products by a name, certain manufacturer, colour, x ,y ,z etc etc from a drop down box(or something similar) This is where I need some guidance. Im just not sure how to go about it or best practise or anything. The only way I can think of is to order all the items by the nested array eg by the name, manufacturer etc. but how do I do that in PHP? Hope you understand what im trying to achieve(if not just ask). Any help on this with ideas, approaches or examples would be great. Thanks for reading p.s Im using PHP5

• Java servlet's request parameter's name set to entire json object

  I'm sending a json object through ajax to a java servlet. The json object is key-value type with three keys that point to arrays and a key that points to a single string. I build it in javascript like this: var jsonObject = {"arrayOne": arrayOne, "arrayTwo": arrayTwo, "arrayThree": arrThree, "string": stringVar}; I then send it to a java servlet using ajax as follows: httpRequest.open('POST', url, true); httpRequest.setRequestHeader("Content-type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"); httpRequest.setRequestHeader("Connection", "close"); var jsonString = jsonObject.toJSONString(); httpRequest.send(jsonString); This will send the string to my servlet, but It isn't showing as I expect it to. The whole json string gets set to the name of one of my request's parameters. So in my servlet if I do request.getParameterNames(); It will return an enumeration with one of the table entries' key's to be the entire object contents. I may be mistaken, but my thought was that it should set each key to a different parameter name. So I should have 4 parameters, arrayOne, arrayTwo, arrayThree, and string. Am I doing something wrong or is my thinking off here? Any help is appreciated. Thanks
