• Issue with increasing the root partition from the swap

  I have an issue with increase the size of my root partition. I have ElementaryOS Luna, and while installing it asked me how much space I want to use. I choosed 15 GB for it, because I want to use this as an alternative system. The issue is that after the installation was complete, I found out that my root partition is only 7 GB big, and SWAP is 8 GB which is useless cuz I have 8 GB of RAM. Now I want to shrink the swap and increase the size of my root partition, so I booted the LiveCD and used GParted. I shrinked the swap without any problems, but now I cant add that free space to any partition. I also turned Swap off. I would add a picture, but I need at least 10 reputation to post images ( Stupid ) Its also worth mentioning that in Gparted its showing my partition in a different way. I would post an image BUT I CANT, so I need to write it down. • Programmatically change height of the window more than the height of the screen in Mac OS X

  Respected low-level users of Mac OS, please, help. I'm trying programmatically to change height of window of safari (or other window). I'm was trying used AppleScript and AXUIElementSetAttributeValue of Carbon, but none of these methods can't increase the window bigger than the height of the screen. But, the width changes without any problems. I guess I'd be starting with something like SetWindowPos with SWP_NOSENDCHANGING flag under Win32. Maybe, you can disable this functionality, which monitors the size of the window or completely shutdown the one who is responsible for it? Note that I want to do this programmatically from an external process - I'm not asking how to control just my own app's window size and position. Thanks.

• Helping to Reduce Page Compression Failures Rate

  When InnoDB compresses a page it needs the result to fit into its predetermined compressed page size (specified with KEY_BLOCK_SIZE). When the result does not fit we call that a compression failure. In this case InnoDB needs to split up the page and try to compress again. That said, compression failures are bad for performance and should be minimized.Whether the result of the compression will fit largely depends on the data being compressed and some tables and/or indexes may contain more compressible data than others. And so it would be nice if the compression failure rate, along with other compression stats, could be monitored on a per table or even on a per index basis, wouldn't it?This is where the new INFORMATION_SCHEMA table in MySQL 5.6 kicks in. INFORMATION_SCHEMA.INNODB_CMP_PER_INDEX provides exactly this helpful information. • Network unreachable on Ubuntu guest after trying to set up a host only network on Virtualbox

  I have a Mac OS X host and a bunch of guests including Ubuntu and Arch Linux. I was trying to set up a host-only network at eth1 to let me ssh into the system. But now eth0 isn't working properly either. Ubuntu can no longer connect to remote hosts or browse the internet. It tells me that the network is unreachable. What's gone wrong here? • Database implementation question?

  consider a disk with a sector size of 512 bytes, 2000 tracks/surface, 50 sectors/track, 5 doubled sided platters, average seek time is 10 msec. Assume a block size of 1024-byte is selected. Assume a file that contains 100,000 records of 100-byte each is to be stored on the disk, and NONE of the reocd can be spanned 2 blocks. How many blocks are needed to store the entire file?? If the file is arranged sequentially on disk, how many surfaces are required?? Now, i have calculated that 10,000 blocks are needed to store 100,000 records. But i am not sure how to find out the answer of the surfaces required. I only calculated the capacity of track is 25KB and capacity of surface is 50,000 KB But I don't know how to calculate the number of surfaces... Could anyone help me how to get the answer? • Properly create centered vertical navigation list with a hover image on both sides?

  I have a navigation list I placed inside of a , I am attempting to get an image that appears on both sides of a link when you hover. Basically a an arrow on each side of the link. I have managed to get the effect I am looking for with: <ul> <li style=""> <a href="#">Services</a> </li> <li> <a href="#">About</a> </li> <li> <a href="#">Media</a> </li> <li> <a href="#">FAQ</a> </li> <li> <a href="#">Portfolio</a> </li> <li> <a href="#">Contact</a> </li> </ul> .nav ul{ list-style:none; text-align:center; } .nav li:hover a:before, .nav li:hover a:after { content:url(../images/nav_bullet.png); } The end result will look like the following but with the list centered: link >> Hovered Link << link However I am not sure if that is the best way of going about it, and the image is too close to the text. I tried placing a margin and padding but that didn't work. To top of it off, the image is not vertically centered with the link text. Anyone know of a proper way to do this as I am just going by trial and error? Thank you in advance!

• SQL binary value to PHP variable leading zeros

  Using sql query to pull data from a mssql database results in a value that still has leading zeros. The data in database is stored as binary(13) - so it will pull all 13 digits. However the value is a text, so any leading zeros will generally show up as '?' in a form on the site - and in return will update wrong data to the database later. So what i need is to only select/display the text itself, not all 13 bytes. using: SELECT CONVERT(char,uilock_pw) AS uipwd FROM tbl_UserAccount or SELECT uilock_pw FROM tbl_UserAccount still adds the leading zeros to the char array. Example in database: 0x71776531323300000000000000 Would show up as: qwe123??????? But should be: qwe123 Im not even sure what character those ? represent. Using Echo results in a normal qwe123 - but not in a form.

• Grid collision - finding the location of an entity in each box

  I am trying to implement grid-based collision in a 2d game with moving circles. The canvas is 400x400 pixels. Below you can see the code for my Grid class. What I want it to do is check inside which box the entities are located and then run a collision check if there are 2 or more entities in the same box. Right now I do not know how to find the position of an entity in a specific box. I know there are many tutorials online, but I haven't been able to find an answer to my question, because they are either written in C/C++ or use the 2d array approach. Code snippets and other help is greatly appreciated. • Need private personal access to ~three PHP pages

  I would like secure access to the text output by three PHP scripts (the text output is JavaScript and html) . The security level is much less then financial data but important none-the-less. I have considered purchasing AND studying https and SSL certificates. Hostgator charges an extra $2/month for a private ip plus $50+ anually for a certificate. This is more then I want to spend for this project (time + money). Is there a simpler solution that is: less expensive easier to implement. I'm open to different approaches.

• Poor TCP loopback throughput on Windows

  I measured the throughput of a locally bound TCP socket connection on my computer (Intel Q9550, 64 GB RAM, Windows XP 64 bit) using iperf. I got dissatisfying results (around 1.6 Gbit/s) each time, no matter how I tweaked the TCP settings (buffer length, window size, max segment size, no delay). I got similar results when I tried netperf. Now, I understand (from sources like these) that the average throughput of a loopback connection should be around 5 Gbit/s. What could be the reasons for such poor performance?

• Partitions mixing up

  I am trying to install ubuntu alongside my windows 7. The problem is that ubuntu is not detecting all of my partitions and basically clubs together many of them. The same thing is done by using GParted. However this problem does not arise while I am using Windows - 7. I cant paste the image of GParted since I dont have the required reputation... I think this could be due to stray GPT data but am not sure how to take care of it. Can someone help me figure this out ?   While developing a small game using tile-mapping method a question came to my mind: I would develop the game on Windows but wouldn't exclude adapting it to another platform. What size(in pixels) would you recommend using for creating the tiles of a tile-mapped game(ie: RPG) with the following requirements? Have an acceptable level of detail without having too many tiles. Having a decent map size. Allow adaptation of the game on a handheld(ie: PSP), smartphone or a computer without too much loss of detail or slowdowns. Allow more or less important zoom-in / zoom-out. Have a resolution of tile that permits either pixel-perfect collision or block-collision. Anything from a good explanation to a game example is useful as long as it can fit the requirements. This question may seem a bit simplistic, but I noticed that many Indies game developer were using inappropriate scales scenery. Also sorry for the poor syntax and the lack of vocabulary of my question, being a non-native English speaker doesn't help when talking about computers programming.

  (NOTE: The operating system (in this case Windows XP SP3 32 bit) we are using is not a choice.) I am trying to setup a short term storage device. First, I found a large 5 Terabyte NAS drive that would IMO fulfill my storage requirements. Second, I also found that Windows XP seems to have a hard drive size limit (see 'Is there a limit to the size of a hard drive for Windows XP pre-SP1?'): XP should handle up to 2 TB per volume after the service packs are applied. You are correct. There was a 137gb limit on the orginal pre service pack windows xp. This was addressed/fixed in SP1. My question is, will my Windows XP SP3 32 bit machine see the 5 Terabyte NAS and be able to read/write properly to the NAS drive?

• Good bitmap fonts with big sizes and unicode support

  I really like bitmap fonts for programming/terminal. As far as I know there are two bitmap fonts with good unicode support: Unifont Fixed The problem is that I have a really high resolution screen, and they're both too small. Fixed does include a large size (10x20) but it looks really bad (it's basically always bold, and bold is a different face). Are there any other bitmap fonts with unicode support and large sizes? Terminus is the only font with a decent size but it doesn't have good unicode support. Having good coverage for mathematical symbols would be enough, since that's what I need.

  I have followed Cloning an SD card onto a larger SD card to clone a 2G SD card to a 32G SD card, and the file system is ext4. However, on the 32G SD card I only can see 2G space available. Is there a way to maximize it out? • Using Bulk Operations with Coherence Off-Heap Storage

  Some NamedCache methods (including clear(), entrySet(Filter), aggregate(Filter, …), invoke(Filter, …)) may generate large intermediate results. The size of these intermediate results may result in out-of-memory exceptions on cache servers, and in some cases on cache clients. This may be particularly problematic if out-of-memory exceptions occur on more than one server (since these operations may be cluster-wide) or if these exceptions cause additional memory use on the surviving servers as they take over partitions from the failed servers. This may be particularly problematic with clusters that use off-heap storage (such as NIO or Elastic Data storage options), since these storage options allow greater than normal cache sizes but do nothing to address the size of intermediate results or final result sets. One workaround is to use a PartitionedFilter, which allows the application to break up a larger operation into a number of smaller operations, each targeting either a set of partitions (useful for reducing the load on each cache server) or a set of members (useful for managing client result set sizes). It is also possible to return a key set, and then pull in the full entries using that key set. This also allows the application to take advantage of near caching, though this may be of limited value if the result is large enough to result in near cache thrashing.

  I love AutuCAD. It's powerful, easy to use, and fits engineering mind. It rocks when you want to draw 2D diagrams and shapes and one the cool features I like about it, is its snapping power. You draw a simple rectangle, then you can very easily create a circumscribe circle around it. However, new version of it are becoming really heavy (in size) and need high tech hardware, because of its powerful 3D capabilities, and rendering engines coming with it. I only want the 2D part of AutoCAD. Is there any software out there, which resembles AutoCAD (like having a console, where you can type L and get the line tool, or having snapping capability, etc.), but is small in size? In other words, what software can be named as AutoCAD 2D alternative?

• HELP! Snow Leopard's Desktop Icons keeps Resizing Repeatedly

  I'm using a new macbook 10.6.5. I've been using mac OS for years. However, the problem that I'm getting is that the desktop icons keep resizing repeatedly. It keeps going to the biggest size possible and its driving me crazy. I've been resizing it back to medium size all the time. But when I start doing something at the finder it starts resizing by itself once again. Is there a fix to this problem? Please help.

• Is 10% too much for autogrow on a 4 GB sql server DB?

  I am getting the following error: 2011-03-07 21:59:35.73 spid64 Autogrow of file 'MYDB_DATA' in database 'MYDB' was cancelled by user or timed out after 16078 milliseconds. Use ALTER DATABASE to set a smaller FILEGROWTH value for this file or to explicitly set a new file size. I did some research, and I found that for large databases you should set autogrow to a fixed size (MB), and not to a percentage. I feel like this database is not large and I may not be addressing the correct issue by changing this value. Does anyone have any opinions? Thank you! EDIT: I should have specified SQL Server 2008 RC2 running on Windows Server 2008
