• Git on windows, is it truly distributed?

  I am just starting out with git on the Windows platform. I have mysygit installed and bar a few hiccups I am 'git'ing away nicely. However, I must be missing something because I don't understand how two msysgit clients on different Windows machines can push and pull to each other directly? I am a complete linux noob but I think I can see that the ssh thing allows distribution on linux. However, the msysgit client appears just to be additional commands in the windows cmd prompt and there is no windows service element. If I try git clone 'MyMatesPc' who is going to be listening to this request at the other end? I can see that if you have a 'central' server running git on linux (or cygwin), you can share commits by pushing them onto the 'central' repo from one machine, then pulling them down onto another. This effectively means that you are having to use a central server. I don't have a problem with this, but wanted to check that I am not missing anything!

• Why does Unity3D crash in VirtualBox?

  I'm running Unity3D in a virtual instance of Windows, using the Virtual Box software on Linux. I have guest additions installed with DirectX support. I've tried using Windows XP SP3 32-bit, and Windows 7 64bit. My host is Ubuntu 12.04 64bit. I installed and registered Unity on both. It loads up fine, and then crashes my entire VirtualBox instance (equivalent of a computer shutting off with no warning).

• What is the typical setup for a laptop used for multi platform development?

  I am planning to build a new laptop for development for both Windows & Linux platforms. On Windows, my development would be primarily on .NET/C#/IIS/MSSQL Server. On Linux, preferably Ubuntu, my development would be on Ruby and Python. I am thinking of buying a laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed with 4GB RAM/Intel Core 2 Duo/320 GB HD & then thinking of running 2 VMs for both Windows and Linux development with the host OS as my work station. Of course, I would be running DBs and web servers on the respective platforms. Is this a typical setup? My only concern is running two VMs side by side. Not sure if this configuration would be optimal. Alternative would be to do my Windows development on the host Windows 7 OS. Any thoughts?

The crash dump indicates a SIGSEGV has occurred in GCTaskThread It uses JNI, so there might be some source for memory corruption, although I can't be sure. • std::string == operator not working

  Hello, I've been using std::string's == operator for years on windows and linux. Now I am compiling one of my libraries on linux, it uses == heavily. On linux the following function fails, because the == returns false even when the strings are equal (case sensitive wise equal) const Data* DataBase::getDataByName( const std::string& name ) const { for ( unsigned int i = 0 ; i < m_dataList.getNum() ; i++ ) { if ( m_dataList.get(i)->getName() == name ) { return m_dataList.get(i); } } return NULL; } The getName() method is declared as follows virtual const std::string& getName() const; I am building with gcc 4.4.1 and libstdc++44-4.4.1. • LDoms and Maintenance Mode

   I got a few questions about how maintenance mode works with LDoms. "I have a Control Domain that I need to do maintenance on. What does being put in maintenance mode actually do for a Control Domain?" Maintenance mode is what you use when you're going to be shutting a system down, or otherwise tinkering with it, and you don't want Ops Center to generate incidents and notification of incidents. Maintenance mode stops new incidents from being generated, but it doesn't stop polling, or monitoring, the system and it doesn't prevent alerts. "What does maintenance mode do with the guests on a Control Domain?" If you have auto recovery set and the Control Domain is a member of a server pool of eligible systems, putting the Control Domain in maintenance mode automatically migrates guests to an available Control Domain.  When a Control Domain is in maintenance mode, it is not eligible to receive guests and the placement policies for guest creation and for automatic recovery won't select this server as a possible destination. If there isn't a server pool or there aren't any eligible systems in the pool, the guests are shut down. You can select a logical domain from the Assets section to view the Dashboard for the virtual machine and the Automatic Recovery status, either Enabled or Disabled. To change the status, click the action in the Actions pane. "If I have to do maintenance on a system and I do not want to initiate auto-recovery, what do I have to do so that I can manually bring down the Control Domain (and all its Guest domains)?" Use the Disable Automatic Recovery action. "If I put a Control Domain into maintenance mode, does that also put the OS into maintenance mode?" No, just the Control Domain server. You have to put the OS into maintenance mode separately. "Also, is there an easy way to see what assets are in maintenance mode? Can we put assets into, or take them out of, maintenance mode on some sort of group level?" You can create a user-defined group that will automatically include assets in maintenance mode. The docs here explain how to set up these groups. You'll use a group rule that looks like this:

  I'm working on converting a Linux project of mine to compile on Windows using MinGW. It compiles and runs just fine on Linux, but when I attempt to compile it with MinGW it bombs out with the following error message: camera.h:11: error: declaration does not declare anything camera.h:12: error: declaration does not declare anything I'm kind of baffled why this is happening, because I'm using the same version of g++ (4.4) on both Linux and Windows (via MinGW). The contents of camera.h is absurdly simple. Here's the code.   i wonder why backspace character in common linux terminals does not actually erase the characters, when printed (which normally works when typed).. this works as expected: $ echo -e "abc\b\b\bxyz" xyz (\b evaluates to backspace, can be inserted also as ctrl-v ctrl-h - rendered as ^H (0x08)) but when there are less characters after the backspaces, the strange behavior is revealed: $ echo -e "abc\b\b\bx" xbc is behaves like left arrow keys instead of backspace: $ echo -e "abc\e[D\e[D\e[Dx" xbc erase line back works normally: $ echo -e "abc\e[1Kx" x in fact, when i type ctrl-v <BS> in terminal, ^? (0x7f) is yielded instead of ^H, this is DEL ascii character, but ctrl-v <DEL> produces <ESC>[3~, but it is another story.. so can someone explain why printed backspace character does not erase the characters? (my environment it xterm linux and some other terminal emulators, $TERM == xterm, tried vt100, linux as well)

• Why does ubuntu server switch to standby when using the xen kernel?

  Question: I have a Linux server, which runs Ubuntu 12.04. I installed Xen-server and paravirtualized an Ubuntu 12.10 as guest machine. Bridged the network, and so far, it worked fine (after much trial-and-error). The only problem left is, that since the host uses the xen-enabled kernel, it goes to standby after x amount of time. It didn't do that on the non-Xen kernel. How can I prevent the Xen-host from switching into standby mode ?

• how do I detect OS X in my .vimrc file, so certain configurations will only apply to OS X?

  I use my .vimrc file on my laptop (OS X) and several servers (Solaris & Linux), and could hypothetically someday use it on a Windows box. I know how to detect unix generally, and windows, but how do I detect OS X? (And for that matter, is there a way to distinguish between Linux and Solaris, etc. And is there a list somewhere of all the strings that 'has' can take? My Google-fu turned up nothing.) For instance, I'd use something like this: if has("mac") " open a file in TextMate from vi: " nmap mate :w<CR>:!mate %<CR> elseif has("unix") " do stuff under linux and " elseif has("win32") " do stuff under windows " endif But clearly "mac" is not the right string, nor are any of the others I tried.

• Problem getting GOBI 2000 HS to work

  I've been trying to get my integrated GOBI WWAN card to work under 10.10 for a while now. I was able to get the network manager to see the card after installing the gobi-loader package. I was able to setup the connection, but i cannot establish a connection to Verizon. Below is the output from /var/log/daemon.log as i try to connect. • Can see samba shares but not access them

  For the life of me I cannot figure this one out. I have samba installed and set up on the ubuntu box and on the Win7 box I CAN SEE all the shares I created. I created two users on ubuntu that map to the users in windows. On ubuntu they are both admins, user A & B on Windows User A is admin and user B is poweruser. User A can see both shares and access them, but user B can see everythin, but only access the homes directory, the other directory throws an error. I have two drives in Ubuntu and this is the smb.config file (I am new to samba): [global] workgroup = WORKGROUP server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu) wins support = no dns proxy = yes name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m max log size = 1000 syslog = 0 panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d security = user encrypt passwords = true passdb backend = tdbsam obey pam restrictions = yes unix password sync = yes passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u passwd chat = *Enter\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *password\supdated\ssuccessfully* . pam password change = yes map to guest = bad user ; usershare max shares = 100 usershare allow guests = yes And here is the share section: Both user A & B can access this from windows. Any ideas? The goal is to have a setup like this. 3 users on window machines. Each user on the data drive will have their own personal folder where they are the ones that can only access, then another folder where 2 of the users will have read only and one user full access. I had this setup before on windows, but after what happened I am NEVER going back to windows, so Unix here I am to stay! I am really stuck. I am running Ubuntu 11. I could reformat again and put on version 10 if that would make life easier. I have been dealing with this since Wed. 3pm. Thanks.
