What's wrong with the queries?

  I'm trying to determine how to find/retrieve/load objects efficiently in terms of a.) minimizing calls to database and b.) keeping the code as elegant/simple as possible (i.e. not writing hql etc.). Assume you have two objects: public class Foo { Bar bar String badge } public class Bar { String name } Each Foo has a bar and a badge. Also assume that all badges are unique within a bar. So if a Foo has a badge "4565" there are no other Foos that have the same badge # AND the same bar. If I have a bar ID, how can I efficiently retrive the Foo w/o first selecting Bar? I know I can do this: Foo.findByBadgeAndBar("4565", Bar.findById("1")) But that seems to cause a select on the Bar table followed by a select on the Foo table. In other words, I need to produce the Grails/Hibernate/GORM equivalent of the following: select * from foo where badge="4565" and bar_id="1"

  The MovieLens data set provides a table with columns: userid | movieid | tag | timestamp I have trouble reproducing the way they pruned the MovieLens data set used in: Tag Informed Collaborative Filtering, by Zhen, Li and Young In 4.1 Data Set of the above paper, it writes "For the tagging information, we only keep those tags which are added on at least 3 distinct movies. As for the users, we only keep those users who used at least 3 distinct tags in their tagging history. For movies, we only keep those movies that are annotated by at least 3 distinct tags." I tried to query the database: select TMP.userid, count(*) as tagnum from (select distinct T.userid as userid, T.tag as tag from tags T) AS TMP group by TMP.userid having tagnum >= 3; I got a list of 1760 users who labeled 3 distinct tags. However, some of the tags are not added on at least 3 distinct movies. Any help is appreciated.

  I have a Vote domain class from my grails application containing properties like article_id and note I want to HQL query the Vote domain class in order to retrieve the 5 best rated articles having at least 10 votes. I tried : SELECT v.article_id, avg(v.note), count(*) FROM vote v where count(*) >= 10 group by v.article_id order by avg(v.note) desc limit 5; But unfortunately the insertion of where count(*) >= 10 throws an error.   I'm using MSSQLExpress named instance in my Silverlight 4 application. The database located in the web application data folder. I attached the db via VS2010. The program works, but the db doesn't show up in Management Studio Express. If I delete the connection from within VS2010, and Try to attach to db via Management Studio Express, on writes, that the database with same the name already exists. Why the database connected via VS2010 doesn't show up in Management Studio Express? Thanks in advance Gabor

  Im wondering whats the best way of storing different types of users in my database. I am writing an application that has 4 main user types (admin, school, teacher, student). At the moment I have a table for each of these but i'm not sure thats the best way of storing user information. For instance... Allowing students to PM other student is simple (store sender and receiver student_id) but enabling teachers to PM students requires another table (sender teacher_id, sender student_id). Should all users be stored in one users table with a user_type field? If so, the teacher / student specific information will still have to be stored in another table. users user_id, password_hash, user_type students user_id, student_specific_stuff... teachers user_id, teacher_specific_stuff... How do I stop a user who has a user_type = student from being accidentally being entered into the teachers table (as both have a user_id) Just want to make sure I get the database correct before i go any further.   I have to implement ACL for an existing application. So I added the a user, group and groupmembers table to the database. I defined a ManyToMany relationship between user and group via the association table groupmembers. In order to protect some ressources of the app (i..e item) I added a additional association table auth_items which should be used as an association table for the ManyToMany relationship between groups/users and the specific item. item has following columns: user_id -- user table group_id -- group table item_id -- item table at least on of user_id and group_id columns are set. So it's possible to define access for a group or for a user to a specific item. I have used the AssociationProxy to define the relationship between users/groups and items. I now want to display all items which the user has access to and I have a really hard time doing that. Following criteria are used: All items which are owned by the user should be shown (item.owner_id = user.id) All public items should be shown (item.access = public) All items which the user has access to should be shown (auth_item.user_id = user.id) All items which the group of the user has access to should be shown. The first two criteria are quite straightforward, but I have a hard time doing the 3rd one. Here is my approach: clause = and_(item.access == 'public') if user is not None: clause = or_(clause,item.owner == user,item.users.contains(user),item.groups.contains(group for group in user.groups)) The third criteria produces an error. item.groups.contains(group for group in user.groups) I am actually not sure if this is a good approach at all. What is the best approach when filtering manytomany relationships? How I can filter a manytomany relationship based on another list/relationship? I have an AuditLog Table with the following columns: AuditLogID, TableName, RowPK, FieldName, OldValue, NewValue, TimeStamp. • SqlCE DB occasionally freezes on one handheld, not another

  I have two types of custom handhelds which are similar, but slightly different, each running the same WinForm application and a WinCE database: Type 1: WinCE 4.2, 400 mhz, 93244 kb Type 2: WinCE 5.0, 520 mhz, 84208 kb Type 1 will happily proceed through a large batch db operation (initiated) by the app, by Type 2 will consistently begin c-r-a-w-l-i-n-g (for several to many cycles) at around the 200 cycle mark. As several points it will begin running normally and then crawl again. The app does several db op's (inserts, updates and selects, no deletes). To simplify my situation, I've built a small test app which essentially does this: command_s.CommandText = "select dvr from vr where vid = 2211250"; command_u.CommandText = "update pvr set LocationID=81 where Status='OK' and vri = 27861"; while(going) { command_s.ExecuteScalar(); command_u.ExecuteNonQuery(); } and set it off running on the two units side by side. Sure enough, the slower (400 mhz) unit is outpacing the faster (520 mhz) unit (it's about 5000 cycles ahead right now) and I can see noticable pauses on the 520 mhz unit. What is causing this?

It is not going to be runnable from the application, but still, i am concerned, that one of my clients accidentally runs it (i had problems earlier due to their "curiosity") :D Yes. there are backups and stuff like that, but I was thinking .... not to scare them ... is there a way to ask the user "are you sure?" before executing it? :) thanks
