  • Force Windows to output only mono sound

    So, the 'right' half of my pair of headphones broke (the transducer+wire are fine, but the earpiece broke on the headband and so the earpiece won't sit over my ear). So now the right channel is being broadcast to my cube neighbors when I wear my headphones. Yes, they look very silly. Is there a way to ensure, in Windows XP (or Windows Media Player), that all stereo sound is downmixed to the left channel only (ie, in mono) so my neighbors don't hear my music? I know that I can setup the mixer to set the balance to 100% left, but information in the right channel won't be heard.

  • Can I use a 27" iMac as a additional monitor for another 27" iMac?

    I currently have a 27" iMac i7 with the 512mb ATI card. After looking at prices on other Apple displays it appears I can purchase another low-end 27" iMac (Core 2 Duo basic model) for less than a 30" display. 3 Part question: Can I easily use the lower-end iMac as an additional monitor to my higher end iMac? While I am using the lower-end iMac as an additional monitor can I still take advantage of its CPU to do things like run a webserver, compress video with Handbrake, etc? Are there any other 27" LCD displays with the same resolution (2560 x 1440) cheaper than the basic iMac (~$1699.00 US)? Any insights appreciated.

    Hello all, I recently purchased an Intel SSD (X25-V 40GB) and I want to add it to my PC as a secondary drive (not the boot/system drive) so I can install specific software to it. Now, do I need to do anything special to ensure long life and peak performance with this as a secondary drive? I have Windows 7 Pro. by the way. All the literature I can find covers the use of a SSD as a boot/system drive under Windows 7, but I don't want to run it like that (I have my reasons). I'm wondering if things like TRIM still work if you don't use the SSD as the boot/system drive. If TRIM and the like still works, do I have to do anything special in order to enable it for my particular setup? Thanks.

  • getting a pyserial not loaded error

    I'm getting a "pyserial not loaded" error with the python script fragment below (running OSX 10.7.4). I'm trying to run a python app called Myro for controlling the Parallax Scribbler2 robot - figured it would be a fun way to learn a bit of Python - but I'm not getting out of the gate here. I've searched out all the Myro help docs but like a lot in-progress open source programs, they are a moving target and conflicting, out of date, or not very specific about OSX. I have MacPorts installed and installed py27-serial without error. MacPorts lists the python versions I have installed, along with the active version: Available versions for python: none python24 python25 python25-apple python26 python26-apple python27 python27-apple (active) python32 Perhaps stuff is getting installed in the wrong places or my PATH is wrong (I don't much know what I am doing in Terminal and have probably screwed something up).   • Is there a good Lotus Notes open-source alternative?

    At my work we use Lotus Notes 6.5 for our email, meeting scheduling and instant messaging. I can't stand the horrible UI, buggy meeting scheduling and overall '90s feel when using it and would love to replace it with open-source alternatives. So far I've been able to setup Thunderbird for email, and I should also be able to configure pidgin to do IM, but I can't find any replacement for the meeting scheduling. I need to be able to receive meeting requests and respond to them. I've looked around trying to get the Thunderbird plugin Lightning to manage the scheduling, but everything I've read so far requires me to export .ics files from Lotus Notes or otherwise keep Lotus Notes around for day-to-day activities. I've also looked into using Evolution as the client, but I found even less information for it than I did for Thunderbird. How can I easily send, receive and respond to Lotus Notes meetings using an open-source alternative? Alternatively, if there exists a full drop-in replacement to Lotus Notes I would also consider it. Note: My desktop at work is a Windows XP machine, though I wouldn't be opposed to a solution requiring cygwin at this point. Edit: I have no power over the server. I only want a compatible client.

    I picked up an ASUS EEE 1101HA with Windows 7 and installed UBUNTU 10.4 Netbook Remix (dual boot). Ubuntu runs fine, but it doesn't recognize that the notebook LCD is 1388x768 and thus only offers 1024x768 and 800x600 as monitor resolution. So .. how can I tell it about that higher resolution? (Have root pwd & vi, una-bash-ed to use both.. )

    Is there any way to change the default mouse cursor on OSX Mavericks? More precisely, I'd like to make it look like in windows, and even more precisely I want to move the 'point' where the mouse cursor actually 'clicks' - on windows it's on the very end of the arrow, even outside of it, and on mac it's a little inside the arrow. I've done some research, and all the websites either tell me to get Mighty Mouse, which doesn't work on my system, and other's tell me how to change the size of my cursor.

    Does anyone know if XAMPP's Perl also provides Tk support? Does anyone know of a similar stack which provides PostresSQL in addition to/instead of MySQL? I'd like this to run on Win 7 and XP. Edit: I do know I could install the other components I want "by hand", for example getting Tk from CPAN, I'd just prefer to get everything at one time if possible.

    Is it possible to create another audio device and redirect only wanted input streams to it? Here's my concrete problem: I am broadcasting a game via XFire and it uses the Windows audio device to capture any audio I receive. As I am broadcasting, other users who watch the video stream are communicating with me over Skype, and they hear themselves back within the video stream and it is entirely logical since I am broadcasting the audio I hear. What I want to do is create another audio device within Windows and redirect (pipe) ONLY the audio input from that game and not the input reveived from Skype. I would then tell XFire to use that newly created "virtual" audio device to broadcast and therefore my partners won't hear themselves back. Is there any software that can do that or can it be achieved natively with Windows? (I am under Windows 7).

  • Looking for definitive answer to accessing a network drive/NAS/SMB drive via Windows 7 HOME and Windows 7 Professional. Is it possible and how?

    I want to be able to access my Lacie 2Big network drive in Windows 7 Explorer. I have a machine with Windows 7 Home and one with Windows 7 Professional. Neither Windows 7, home or pro, can access the drive. The Windows 7 Home machine displays the drive in its Explorer, with the capacity, but on clicking the icon, I get another window, blank with the busy pointer which does not eventually stop. The drive is working perfectly. How do I know this? Because I can access it with no problems on my Apple Mac, Windows XP home and Ubuntu machines on the same network as the Windows 7 machines. Except for the Windows XP home machine that required Lacie ethernet agent program, the Mac and the Ubuntu machines needed no setup, the drive appeared like any other drive. So my 2 questions: Is it possible to access a network share drive, e.g. a NAS like Lacie 2big in Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional. If so how? I read on Microsoft's own forums and elsewhere that network sharing drives, e.g. via SambaSMB is NOT possible on Windows 7 Home.   • Why can't I delete my depot on Perforce?

    I'm just messing around in a local Perforce database, trying to figure out how I can reset Perforce back to a previous state without journaling or deleting and recreating the database files. I have some depots without files, one of them is called "sandbox". I created it with the p4 depot command either from the command line or using the P4Python API (at this point I don't remember which). When I type: p4 depot -d sandbox I get this: Depot sandbox isn't empty. To delete a depot, all file revisions must be removed and all lazy copy references from other depots must be severed. Use 'p4 obliterate' or 'p4 snap' to break file linkages from other depots, then clear this depot with 'p4 obliterate', then retry the deletion. I tried p4 obliterate -y sandbox which just says No records to delete. which is expectable as the depot is empty. Anyway it doesn't change the result from p4 depot -d. There are also no connections from other depots as the error message suggests. Any idea what is happening and is there a foolproof way to force a depot to be deleted without deleting the server files altogether? Ultimately I want to do this automatically from P4Python.

    I have a ThinkPad T510 laptop with Gentoo Linux installed on it and I can’t manage to get VGA and DisplayPort working. xrandr -q won’t show them, so I’m guessing, that there’s a problem with my kernel configuration, but I wasn’t able to find the options responsible for these ports.   • Illustrator CS4: SVG Export error "Transforms are Expanded"?

    I get the following error when trying to save my image to SVG (via "Save Copy As"): Transforms are expanded. When I try to load the SVG in another program, all I get is a blank canvas. I ultimately want the path data to feed into RaphaelJS, but the path data that I got by clicking on the Show Code button during the SVG export also yields a blank canvas with RaphaelJS (and I've verified that RaphaelJS is loaded, and it is rendering properly). I'm convinced that this export error in Illustrator is the problem, but I can't figure out how to make it go away and export my SVG graphic properly. Can anyone help? Thanks!

    I have an aged Asus A2500H notebook, with a broken screen and damage to the outside. Since it has a TV-out connection, and is working good otherwise, I have it hooked up to my television as a kind of media-center to play video over LAN. I want to remove the screen as cleanly as possible, but am having trouble opening up the laptop. I've been able to remove the (broken) hinges the screen pivots on. I've also removed any other screws I could spot, but still the casing doesn't come off and seems to be attached by yet more screws I can't access (yet). I've been searching the web for disassemble instructions, I've found some for a number of other brands and models, but not for the Asus A2500H.
