  • Summer Programming Plans

    I've wanted to start "hacking" for many months now. But I put it off in favor of school and other things. Now, though, I'm free for the summer and want to learn as much as I can. I have a rough idea of what I want to try my hand at, but need some guidance as to what specifically - and how - I should learn. This is my plan so far: 1) Get good at programming in general. I plan to read up on how to think/work like a programmer. I'm waiting for the Pragmatic Programmer to arrive, which will be the first book I read. Q: What other books/ebooks should I look at? What more can I do here? 2) Learn/Improve at HTML/CSS. My first project will be to make a personal website/blog for myself using HTML and CSS. ----Then I hope to write/design articles like Dustin Curtis. After I finish this (and learn a programming language) I'll try to create user-based a user-focused website. Q: It's my understanding that just trying to design/manage websites is a good way to learn/improve at HTML/CSS. Is that all correct? 3) Try music development. This might be a sort of stretch for stackoverflow, but I'm interested in mixing/making techno songs. (Think Justice, or Daft Punk, or MSTRKRFT.) Q: I have a Mac. Any ideas on how I could start/learn music making? Any programs I should download, for instance? 4) My main goal: Learning a web development language/framework. I'm a year into learning/using C++. But what I really want to do is develop websites and web apps. I've searched online, and there seems to be great debate over which language/framework to learn first (and which is best). I think I've narrowed it down to three: Ruby (Rails), Python (Django), and PHP (?). Q #1: Which should I learn and use first? (Reasons?) Q #2: One reason I was leaning towards PHP is that I'm taking a PHP development course next semester. Learning it now would make that course easy. If PHP was not the answer to Q #1, is it worth learning both? Or, would it be better to just focus on PHP for this summer and next semester, and then transition thereafter to a better language? 5) iPhone/iPad Programming (Maybe). I've a number of simple, useful app ideas that I'd like to eventually get too. I just bought a Mac, as well as a few app development books. Q #1: Am I spreading myself thin trying to learn all of the above, and objective-C? Q #2: How much harder/easier is objective-C compared to the above languages? Also, how easy is it to learn obj-C after learning a web development language (and some C++)? Q #3: Yes or no? Should I go for it, or just keeep with #1-4 for now? Also: If you have any tips on how I should learn (or how you learned to hack), I'm all ears. I'd be especially interested in how you planned out learning: did you just hack whenever you felt like it, or did you "study" the language a few hours a day, or something else? Thanks so much, guys.

  • Windows web server and SQL Server on same dedicated server

    I'm currently trying to decide on the best approach to handle hosting a few moderate traffic websites for production e-commerce and online applications. We'd like to move to a dedicated server and are looking at this as the most likely machine: Quad Core Intel Core2Quad Q9550 Processor, 2.83 Ghz X 4, 4 GB Kingston Ram This would run Windows Web Server 2008 R2 x64 and potentially also Sql Server Web 2008 and SmarterMail server. Given that we already pay for a high-end VPS for development, testing, shared version control we'd like to avoid going with two servers for production. We'd like to avoid using shared sql server hosting and have thought of using the development server as the database server as an option too - but potentially a security risk due to use for development by internal and contract users. The questions are: - Do you feel there would be performance degradation by running this on the same machine? - Are there significant issues to be concerned about if we do this? We understand that best practice would be to run separate db and app servers but the volume of traffic is currently not that high and adding another server just for database is currently too costly. - What are others doing out there? Alternatively, would you recommend instead going with two separate VPS servers with 2GB RAM each on Hyper-v which would be about the same cost as the single dedicated server above? Thanks!

    I am writing a program that opens LPT1 and writes a value to it. The WriteFile function is returning an error code of 1167, "The device is not connected". The Device Manager shows that LPT1 is present. I have a cable connected between a development board and the PC. The cable converts JTAG pin signals to signals on the parallel port. Power is applied and the cable is connected between the development board and the PC. The development board is powered on. I am using: Windows XP MS Visual Studio 2008, C language, console application, debug environment.     To Clarify: my question is why isn't my password policy applying to people in the domain. Hey guys, having trouble with our password policy in Active Directory. Sometimes it just helps me to type out what I’m seeing It appears to not be applying properly across the board. I am new to this environment and AD in general but I think I have a general grasp of what should be going on. It’s a pretty simple AD setup without too many Group Policies being applied. It looks something like this DOMAIN Default Domain Policy (link enabled) Password Policy (link enabled and enforce) Personal OU Force Password Change (completely empty nothing in this GPO) IT OU Lockout Policy (link enabled and enforced) CS OU Lockout Policy Accouting OU Lockout Policy The password policy and default domain policy both define the same things under Computer ConfigWindows seetings sec settings Account Policies / Password Policy Enforce password History : 24 passwords remembered Maximum Password age : 180 days Min password age: 14 days Minimum Password Length: 6 characters Password must meet complexity requirements: Enabled Store Passwords using reversible encryption: Disabled Account Policies / Account Lockout Policy Account Lockout Duration 10080 Minutes Account Lockout Threshold: 5 invalid login attempts Reset Account Lockout Counter after : 30 minutes IT lockout This just sets the screen saver settings to lock computers when the user is Idle. After running Group Policy modeling it seems like the password policy and default domain policy is getting applied to everyone.   • Inter-VLAN Malicious Code Scanning

    I am trying to find an inbuilt solution on a Cisco Catayst 3750X Switch to scan all traffic routed from one VLAN to another for malicious code. The situation is that we currently have a development environment which is currently being redesigned to upgrade the network infrastructure to use the 3750X switches to manage server and workstation connectivity as well as inter-VLAN routing. We also have another system that is responsible for taking the builds created on the development environment and imaging various HDDs. Because these are two separate systems, we have a requirement in the workplace to anti-virus scan any data transferred between these systems. This is done by copying the data from the originating system to external USB HDD, scanning in a standalone workstation and then copying the data on to the receiving system. As you can imagine this is extremely tedious and impractical most of the time... (I don't make the rules). Anyway, with this redesign going on, we would like to join the imaging system to the network infrastructure of the development system, keeping separation by the use of VLANs and restricting traffic by using ACLs. As we still have the requirement to scan all traffic I would like to configure some sort of malicious code scanning when ever traffic is routed between these VLANs. I am aware I could install a separate in-line IPS/IDS device, however both systems will be using multiple ports on the switch (obviously), and we won't be able to put a device on each port. I would would prefer not to add additional hardware if the 3750x switch is capable of doing the job. Is anyone aware of any Cisco solution that I could use here, that ideally can be incorporated into the 3750x switch? Thanks in advance.

  • Squid proxy in cent os often disconnected with error : tunnelConnectTimeout(): tunnelState->servers is NULL

    I am having very often internet disconnection problem with Squid proxy service. My server config; OS: CentOS release 6.3 (Final) model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz cpu MHz : 1600.000 My Local systems IP range:192.168.2.x Server IP: 192.168.2.11 Also this server is configured with lamp for development,Samba SMB file service manager and No svn currently. So i see maximum possibility is this squid proxy since this is where it stops to connect and am sure when i restart the server net started working so something wrong with this squid service only. And this server is connected with local 14 other windows machines and basically serves as a central development node. I am able to resolve it by restarting the server fully some time or sometimes by restarting the squid proxy which is totally killing our development. I have attached my cache log file here for the error info.   • Resolve Wrong IP from Domain Name only on certain networks

    I host a personal website on an old desktop that is LAMP based. There are several strange things about this problem so I will break it down into steps. Since I have a dynamic IP, I use no-ip to make sure I have a working domain name at all times. I use the automatic update client, but logged in and checked and my no-ip domain has the proper IP tied to it. Here is a link to the homepage through the no-ip domain for reference. I also have a domain I have bought on GoDaddy where I have a CNAME record forwarding the www subdomain to my no-ip domain. CNAME Record Host: www Points to: endradil.noip.me TTL: 1 hour For the past several weeks, I never had an issue using the GoDaddy domain to connect (ssh or https). As of the past few days, however, the GoDaddy domain has only worked intermittently, for a few minutes at a time and then will go down for hours at a time. I get server not found errors most of the time. Also, if I happen to be using the GoDaddy domain for an ssh connection, the connection will freeze. I have run online tests of the DNS and have seen that the website is visible by external servers and resolved to the correct IP. I also contacted GoDaddy support but they had no issues connecting to the website, and therefore did not see any issues. My personal computers (Windows desktop, linux laptop, android phone) all fail to connect when on my personal wifi. If I disconnect my phone from the wifi and use my AT&T wireless data, it can connect with both domains without issue. When I attempt to use Google webmaster tools to crawl the site using the GoDaddy domain, Google can not find the site. From my linux laptop, I have found some interesting results when I ping or traceroute the domain. From another linux box on a different network but in the same city as me (10 miles away), I still get timeout for traceroute, however the IP resolves correctly for the domain. From this I believe that the DNS result is incorrectly cached in either my router/modem or perhaps even at my ISP level. My question is, first, how do I find out exactly what is wrong, and second, how do I resolve it.

  • MySQL query, 2 similar servers, 2 minute difference in execution times

    I had a similar question on stack overflow, but it seems to be more server/mysql setup related than coding. The queries below all execute instantly on our development server where as they can take upto 2 minutes 20 seconds. The query execution time seems to be affected by home ambiguous the LIKE string's are. If they closely match a country that has few matches it will take less time, and if you use something like 'ge' for germany - it will take longer to execute. But this doesn't always work out like that, at times its quite erratic. Sending data appears to be the culprit but why and what does that mean. Also memory on production looks to be quite low (free memory)?     Where could I get best step by step instructions (with some simple explanations) how to setup domain controller on Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core? I don't know what do I need? Do I need DNS as well and AD and so on and so forth. I don't know enough about these things, but I need to set them up to prepare development environment. I would also like to know how to configure firewall on DC machine, to make it visible on other machines because I've setup DC somehow but I can't connect to it... This is my HW config: Linksys internet router with DHCP my dev machine is Windows 7 my DC machine is a VM in my dev machine my dev machine has a hw network adapter to linksys and a virtual network adapter to DC DC machine has two network adapters: one to linksys (to be internet connected so it can be updated etc.) and one to host (my dev Win7 machine) Edit My development machine should access domain controller and logon using domain credentials. Development machine would access internet directly via Linksys router. My domain controller machine would only serve authentication (and if I'm able to configure it right) should also have Active Directory Federation Services in a workable condition. I hope this is a bit more clear now. At least a small bit.

  • Configuring a MySQL 5.1 Instance on Windows 7 Professional x64 Fails

    I'm trying to set up my laptops to function as mobile development environments. Installing the software on my Linux machine and getting it configured was fairly straightforward, however I'm having trouble getting MySQL 5.1 Server installed and configured on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I'm currently using the Windows MSI Installer for the complete MySQL 5.1 system (as opposed to the Essentials installer also available). I've tried to install using both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of MySQL 5.1 - the same events occur in both. I've installed both the Server Instance Configuration Wizard and Workbench and everything appears to be installed just fine. When I open the Instance Configuration Wizard, I select Detailed Configuration. On the next screen, I select Development Environment, then Multifunctional Database on the next screen. I leave the InnoDB settings unchanged. I select Manual Setting with 5 concurrent connections. I enable TCP/IP Networking on Port 3306 and Enable Strict Mode. I select the Standard Character Set. I check the boxes for Install as a Windows Service (and provide the name "MySQL") and Include the Bin Directory in Windows PATH. On the next screen, I set my root user name and password. I do not enable root access from remote machines and I also do not create an anonymous account. On the final screen of the wizard, when I click "Execute", the first two tasks (Prepare Configuration and Write Configuration File) complete. However, when it reaches Start Service, the wizard hangs and becomes unresponsive ("Not Responding" appears in the title bar and Task Manager). I would really like to be able to use both my Windows and Linux laptops as full-blown mobile development environments, but I can't do that without being able to run MySQL. Has anyone encountered this problem before? What options do I have to correct it?

    This is in planning, so if I've got the strategy wrong, please let me know. There are multiple questions here, but I think they all degenerate to the same answers. The hardware is a laptop with a single SSD. I'm trying to not lose the performance of the SSD. I plan a native dual booting Windows (plus cygwin) and Linux machine which is my BYOD and represents the development environment. I keep the codebase on a shared partition (though sometimes this is an external thunderbolt SSD) which can be natively "mounted" by whichever OS is in operation. I boot into one or the other environments depending on the task in hand. Sometime I have to develop with windows tools, but generally, Linux is my preferred development environment. It would be ideal if I could VM the other OS and run either in either. I'm going to assume, because I've not found a sensible VM based solution, that I have get samba involved to share the code partition between VMs. Is this going to blow my SSD performance in the VM? The client also supplies me with a VM for the target environment, usually linux. This is not often suited to development and is used for testing only. I normally keep two copies of this, one as a sandbox and one which I deploy to using the client's preferred method. I keep these VM snapshots on the shared partition. The latter is interacted with over the network and so has no disk sharing requirements. However, it would be useful for the sandbox to be able to "mount" the code base from the natively running OS. Is this samba or nfs again, depending on the native OS? Am I missing a trick which allows this to all work smoothly with all four environments running at once without loosing the SSD performance?

  • Slow connection to Linux MySQL from Windows only (XAMPP)

    I'm having a problem with a PHP project (using Kohana 3.2 framework) on my Windows 7 64-bit machine connecting to the database. The development database is stored on a Ubuntu Linux server on the local network. Other development machines running OSX and Linux are connecting fine. There are no other Windows development machines to test with. I can access MySQL fine using MySQL Workbench, and other projects (which I believe to be less database heavy) run mostly ok, only occasionally getting timeout messages. I'm constantly getting Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded when functions such as mysql_query() are run in this particular project. Specifically, the Kohana file where the timeout occurs is MODPATH\database\classes\kohana\database\mysql.php [ 186 ]. My local set-up is: Windows 7 Professional 64bit XAMPP 1.7.7 (PHP 5.3.8) The output of uname -a of the Linux server is: Linux peach 2.6.38-11-server #50-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 12 21:34:27 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I've tried the following, with no success: Disabling Windows firewall Switching between using a persistant and normal connection In my.cnf, adding skip-name-resolve Increasing wait_timeout Enabling bind-address I've run out of ideas now, and have no idea how to debug an odd issue like this. Has anyone come across this before, or have any idea how I could find the root of the issue, or what might be the problem?

If I run yum groupinstall development, yum is smart enough to pull the gcc package from the RHEL repo even though the groups are defined in my internal repository. However, is this the proper way of doing this, or should I copy the rpms to my local repository and recreate the repo?

On our development machine, this works: RequestHeader set X-Foo %{REMOTE_ADDR}e However, in staging it doesn't. Specifically, the header is empty, as illustrated by both varnishlog: 13 TxHeader b X-Foo: (null) (On the development machine, this shows the IP address as expected.)
