    for example I have command that shows how much space folder takes du folder | sort -n it works great, however I would like to have human readable form du -h folder however if I do that than I cannot sort it as numeric. How to join "du folder" and "du -h folder" to see output sorted as "du folder", but with first column from "du -h folder" P.S. this is just an example. this technique might be very useful for me (if its possible)

  • Should I switch my server to Ubuntu Server from Windows Server 2003

    I have a server thats primarily used for SRCDS, I host a few Team Fortress 2 servers on it and I would much prefer a ssh-like (more so the no-gui part) for something like this, mostly because I can't navigate with my phone on VNC very well and also because there really is no need for a gui in this situation. I sort of want to make the switch but I am unsure, because my server 2003 is very fast and If I do need to reboot, it can reboot in under 30 seconds to desktop. Should I switch?

    I know how to do this in /bin/sh, but I'm struggling a bit in Windows. I know you can do arithmetic on 32-bit signed integers with SET /a 2+2 4 But how do I pass this to the next command? For example, the process I want to perform is as follows. Consumer editions of Windows have no native automated sleep function (I believe?) -- the best way to perform a sleep is to use PING in association with the -n switch to get that many seconds, minus one, of sleep. The following command is effective for a silent sleep: PING localhost -n 3 > NUL But I want to alias this into a sleep command. I'd like to have it elegant so that you enter the actual number of seconds you want to sleep after the command, right now I can do DOSKEY SLEEP=PING 127.0.0.1 -n $1 > NUL Which works, but it's always 1 second less than your input, so if you wanted to sleep for one second you would have to use the command SLEEP 2. That's not exactly ideal. Is there some way for me to pass the arithmetic of $1+1 and pass it on to the next command in Windows? I assume there is some way of using STDOUT...

    I am using wireshark to monitor traffic on a server - Problem is, the computer I am using is only a terminal wired through the switch. Main line comes into the server which is relayed to multi-port switch (roughly 50 connections). Right now I get a lot of server communication between my it and my terminal but shows no information for other terminals. Can wireshark be configured to monitor ALL traffic in this environment?

  • How do I measure performance of a virtual server?

    I've got a VPS running Ubuntu. Being a virtual server, I understand that it shares resources with unknown number of other servers, and I'm noticing that it's considerably slower than my desktop machine. Is there some tool to measure the performance of the virtual machine? I'd be curious to see some approximate measure similar to bogomips, possibly for CPU (operations/sec), memory and disk read/write speed. I'd like to be able to compare those numbers to my desktop machine. I'm not interested in the specs of the actual physical machine my VPS is running on - by doing cat /proc/cpuinfo I can see that it's a nice quad-core Xeon machine, but it doesn't matter to me. I'm basically interested in how fast a program would run in my VPS - how many CPU operations it can make in a second, how many bytes to write to RAM or to disk. I only have ssh access to the machine so the tool need to be command-line. I could write a script which, say, does some calculations in a loop for a second and counts how many loops it was able to do, or something similar to measure disk and RAM performance. But I'm sure something like this already exists.

    I accidentally removed all the entries from the fstab files while doing a backup (Yeah, I know ;)). I would like to know if there is a way to rebuild it with the current mount options, since I did not restart the server since the deletion. If there is no such program, could anybody help me rebuild it.   • Help with "advanced" shell scripting | how to create an image preview of a pdf

    First of all, sorry for my english: i'm not british/american. Here is my problem. I've got a folder named pdf with lots of files pdf inside it. I've got another folder named thumbnail, which is empty. I want to create jpg images preview of each pdf to use them in my HTML webpages as previews of the pdf. To do this I'm using a software called IMAGEMAGICK. I tried to put the code inside my PHP files to get the purpose, but it doesn't work. As you understood, I have created a small search engine with apache, mysql to search for pdf locally (offline). Now I want to add a "preview" of the first page of pdfs. Instead, it works by bash command line and the code is: convert pdf/name_of_the_file_pdf.pdf[0] name_of_the_imagefile.jpg (The zero stands for that the image is taken from the FIRST page of pdf) How can i make a script that takes each name of pdf files and put it into that code???? To list all the file, I did ls >pdf but with the little knowledge I have I can't go further.... Some pdf's names contain spaces....Is that a problem? PDF files are so many that i can't do the task typing every name,it wouldn't be a nice and clever work!!!! Thanks a lot in advance!!!

  • How do I install Ubuntu 12.04 PPC on a PowerPC G4 from commands line or fix the graphical mode?

    Good afternoon. I'm new to this Linux world so I hope someone can help me . I recently got a Mac as a gift, a PowerPC G4 , which has 1GB of RAM but came with no optical drive or hard drive. So I put a dvd burner and a hard drive of 40 GB I got. Then download an iso of Ubuntu 12.04 for PowerPC and burned onto a CD. I'm trying to install from Open Firmware ( as I haven't a Mac keyboard, I use one standard ) . Finally, the Installation CD boots , but on live mode and after the Ubuntu 12.04 screen I get a message that there is a problem with my graphics adapter but I can continue with minimal graphics and give me the command line . My question is that how do I install through a text or if there is any way to fix this problem to run the graphical mode and so can continue the installation of Ubuntu, and if once installed Ubuntu the problem will be fixed or what? I would appreciate if you help me , as I mentioned before, there is almost nothing of Ubuntu but I think it will be easier than trying to get the Mac OS X proper . Spend good.

  • Launching php script through comman line - keeping terminal window open after execution

    Oh, my girlfriend really likes it when I launch php scripts! There's something special about them, she says ... Thus, I coded this script to run throught the CLI (Command Line Interface) - so it's running locally, not on a web server. It launches just fine through right click open run in terminal but closes right after execution. **Is there a way to keep the terminal window open? Of course I can launch it through a terminal window - which would stay open - but I'm looking for a one click action. With bash scripts I use $SHELL but that didn't work (see code below). So far, the only thing I came up with is sleep(10); which gives me 10 seconds for my girl to check the output.     Background I've been running a KVM switch with my monitor at 1920 x 1080 over VGA for over a year. Did a Windows Update on 12/11/12 which did the following: Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2779562) Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2779030) Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2761465) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - December 2012 (KB890830) Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2753842) Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2758857) Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2770660) After a restart, my extended monitor was dark. I attempted to reset the extended display configuration, and noticed my monitor was being detected as a Generic Non-PnP Monitor: I uninstalled, downloaded new, and re-installed display drivers. Nothing. I attempted to unplug my monitor from the power for 15 minutes. Nothing. I followed some of the suggestions on this thread; specifically DanM's which suggested to create a new *.inf file and replace that in Device Manager. Device Manager said the "best driver software for your device is already installed". The only thing that works is when the monitor is directly attached to the laptop. This obviously is not what I want. My thought is to somehow remove the Generic Non-PnP Monitor from registry. How would I accomplish this and would this help? Any other suggestions?   • Two hosts on same subnet can't see each other

    I've got two routers with two separate public IP addresses on the same subnet, but I can't get them to talk to each other. Both are connected to the internet (ISP-provided gateway) via Ethernet ports provided by the landlord, but I don't have access to or knowledge of how those are physically connected or the protocols used to get back to the ISP. I can ping either from the outside, but they can't ping each other. Traceroutes in and out look the same, and they receive the same gateway over DHCP. I can ping other IPs on the subnet, so I assume this is not any sort of intentional isolation for security/privacy. Since I'm in a setup where my landlord provides internet and we don't have contact with the ISP, I can't really ask the ISP for help (doubt the landlord would know much either.) The situation is similar to the diagram at this question, but instead of the two servers, there's another router coming off the (presumed) switch, and I don't have access to the switch. I've tried giving them static routes to each other with the ISP internet gateway as the gateway, but that's not working. One is a Linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT, the other is a Netgear WGR614v7, although I could get something more capable if necessary. I'd like to keep them each connected directly to the ISP on their WAN ports, but I can have an ethernet cable between them if necessary - I'm wondering if there's a way without that, and if there isn't, I'd appreciate advice on how to get that working. Sorry this is so nitpicky; there are reasons for all the constraints, but they don't apply to the real question, so I left them out. ;) Thank you!

  • Why can't I run any Android NDK commands?

    I had been running Mint 12 before, and everything was working there. I switched to Ubuntu 12.04, and now I am very frustrated. When I run ndk-build, I get /home/buzz/ndk/prebuilt/linux-x86/bin/make: not found So, I changed to that folder directly. When I type in ./make, I get bash: ./make: No such file or directory Typing ls clearly shows the file where I am! I did some hacking around (pointing to external tools) to get past each error (just to experiment), and I ran into this! /home/buzz/ndk/toolchains/arm-linux-androideabi-4.6/prebuilt/linux-x86/bin/arm-linux-androideabi-gcc: Command not found Why? Why are all these files unable to be found? As I said above, this was all working just fine in another distro. What changed? What's extra frustrating is that if I push TAB to auto-complete, it works. So, the file is clearly there (and clearly marked with execution permissions). So, why can't it be found?

  • What could be wrong with my VLAN?

    I've got a VLAN 10 setup as a management VLAN. The management VLAN comes off port 48 and links to another set of switches that do not support VLAN's so it was I believe set up as an untagged access port. In the past this was a different brand of switch and this worked fine. However, since changing to the HP V1910-48G series I can't seem to get this working. I must point out that as far as I'm aware it is wired up properly (I can't check this physically as I'm working remote and have asked the tech who's got access to double check for me). Now I don't have a huge amount of experience with VLAN environments but AFAIK this is right. I've set the port 48 (linked to the management switches) as an untagged port with PVID 10 and access link type. Is this all I'd need to do from a configuration perspective to ensure all devices connected to port 48 would end up being on VLAN 10 and not needing to tag their frames. i.e. the tag would be added by the switch before being forwarded.
