  I have a desktop system installed with a 250 GB hdd (seagate sata II) this system is having a power supply of 500W (not sure if it is 650W but not more than that) the power supply is a local brand. Will it be safe to attach a second 250 GB sata II hdd on the same system. Safe in the sense that the system may not fall short of power at any time. My system's config is as follows Core2Duo processor Mercury cabinet having an additional fan (small one) sata dvd writer 52X windows xp sp 2 ASUS motherboard (intel G965 express chipset) If the above specified power supply is not sufficient for above configuration of system then please suggest the appropriate power supply (including watts)

• See network computer description in Explorer

  When viewing the list of network computers in Windows Explorer on a Win 7 machine there appears to be no way of readily seeing the description field, which makes that pretty well useless. I believe this problem started with Vista but I'm seeing it for the first time because I was fortunate enough to skip over Vista. We're currently rolling out Win 7 on new boxes and although I'm changing the naming system to something more sensible, the old boxes have names such as FWS01, FWS02, etc. Managing a network of computers with such names is made more difficult when you can't readily see who's machine each one is. Googling the problem brought up a workaround involving creating a shortcut on an XP machine and copying that to the Win 7 box but that's a long way from ideal. Is there some kind of hack that can be applied to machines, the operator of which needs to be able to see the description field?

• Accessing shared resource on local computer from users of different physical location

  Sounds like easy task to some but such a difficult task for me to do... The main requirement for this task is to setup something in offices located on different locations, so (1st question) users are able to log on to the domain without VPN when they are in one of the offices. Additionally, (2nd question)how they can log on to the domain server when they are on the road like in a starbuck, what do they have to do to connect to domain after VPN connection are successful. also it's my understanding that, we can't share resource from computers on different network segments, (3rd question)what is the best solution to bridge/combine two network segments(two office in different locations) so computers of different location can see each other. • After upgrade to Lucid, computer doesn't respond to clicks or pressed keys until X restart

  I upgraded to Lucid today, and after the update the display is "frozen". I can move the cursor, but I cannot click on anything, nor does it respond to any keys. The only way to fix it is to SSH into the machine (which, by the way, works just fine), and kill and start X. Then I'm taken back to the login screen and everything works. This happens every time I boot. Let me know if there are more details that I can provide.

• Computer turns off and on after start ..then goes dead

  I built a new PC from the following components: - CPU: Intel Core i7 950 - MB: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R - RAM: 2x2gb i7 Corsair memory - VGA: Zotac AMP2 GTX260 - HDD: 1 GreenSATA HDD (Western Digital 500gb RE2) When I turn it on, it goes for a few seconds, fans at maximum speed, then turns off. The again, it starts by itself.. and goes with fans on max speed, nothing happens. First I suspected my PSU. It's a Chieftec 450AA PSU. After I borrowed a Chieftec 550AA PSU, I tried to start with that. Exact same story. Any idea ? Do I need a bigger PSU? Reason why its not localized. I never seen this turn on, off, on. If you give answer for that, it would already help people like me, with the same problem.

• Using Powershell's Invoke-command to install .exe on remote computer

  I have an .exe I would like to install on a large farm of Windows Server 2008 computers. I am attempting to use Powershell remoting. I have this command which works locally: invoke-command {& "N:\Temp\fortify_installer\HP-Fortify-3.20-Analyzers_and_Apps-Windows-x86.exe /s /f1N:\Temp\fortify_installer\response.iss"} But when I add the -computername flag it seems to go off to nowhere, and the installer is never run on the remote machine. I can launch notepad.exe via the same command and it runs. Does it have something to do with it being an installer, or something else? I realize many versions of this question have been asked and I have read them, but I am still confused as to why this doesn't work.

• Remote Desktop from Linux to Computer that Requires Network Level Authentication

  Is there a way to use rdesktop or another Linux client to connect to a server that requires Network Level Authentication? From Windows Server 2008 R2 -- Control Panel -- System And Security -- System -- Allow Remote Access there is an option that says "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication". So with this enabled I can con not connect from Linux. I can connect from XP but you need SP3 and I had to edit a couple of things in the registry for it to work.

• Pentium 4 Computer Won't Power Up

  I have a faulty Pentium 4 workstation with data that I would like to retrieve. Here are the symptoms & what I've done so far: Machine is totally dead. Motherboard LED is lit but that is the only sign of life. I have replaced the power supply and bypassed the on/off switch. Tried a PC Analyzer motherboard tester but didn't have any power to the card. Unpluggged the P4 cable from the motherboard, hit the on/off switch, the power supply fan comes on and I get codes from the analyzer but nothing that seems to be of any value. Machine does not boot. Will not shut down by hitting the switch. Bad motherboard or could it be a bad CPU cooling fan?

• SharePoint Returning a 401.1 for a Specific User/Computer

  We have a SharePoint Services 3.0 site set up supporting about 300 users right now. This report is isolated and has never been duplicated. We have one AD user who cannot log into the SharePoint site with his account from his machine and is subsequently returned a 401.1 error. If any other user tries to log on with their account from his machine, it works okay. If he moves to another machine and logs on, it works okay. The only solution to this point has been to install FireFox on the machine. When he authenticates with FF, everything is okay. Remedies tried so far: Cleared cookies/cache Turned off/on Integrated Windows Authentication in IE Downgraded IE 8 to IE 6 Removed site from Intranet Sites zone Renamed the machine Disjoined/Rejoined Domain

• MacBook Pro (2007 - ATI-Card) Screen goes half black then shuts down the entire computer

  Hey, when I'm starting my MBP I get about 10-60 seconds of the booting process before the screen goes half black (Its like applying a black to transparent gradient from the left side of the screen to the middle of the screen). After a 5 seconds the entire screen blacks out and the MBP shuts down. There have been issues with heat and some minor artifacts on the screen in the past but nothing serious as far as I know. Everything could be resolved by rebooting or letting the MBP cool down a bit. I would like to identify the problem now. There are 3 possibilities I can think of right now: My graphics card is defect and shuts down after a few seconds. (But if thats true, I find it kind of hard to explain the HALF black screen) My LCD-Panel is defect and sends back wrong signals so the system shuts down??? (I not sure about that) My fan or/and thermal sensors are defect and forcing the graphics card to shut down. Can anyone point if I'm right or if there yet another reason for this. • safari 5 doesnt work on my computer.

• CPU clock scales down so computer is unusable after switching to battery

  When I am plugged in my laptop runs great however when I unplug it and I'm on battery power my CPU clock speed scales down pretty much all the way. I know this is happening by monitoring the clock speed. When plugged in it will usually stay between 1000MHz and 3000MHz but when I unplug it it quickly scales down to less than 500MHz and will get as low as 100MHz and it will NEVER scale up at all on battery power. After I plug the power back in it will then begin operating normally in about a minute. I have tried setting the MIN and MAX CPU performance in power options to 100% and have tried messing around with cooling settings which seemed to be a problem with HP laptops. I have a Toshiba Satellite M500-ST6444 running Windows 7. The BIOS is up to date. I have tried two versions.

• How to install Windows with no CD drive boot option in BIOS?

  I have a new computer which I built from scratch and I am trying to install a copy of Windows Vista on it. I am able to get to the BIOS and change the boot options which are as follows.. -Built-in EFI Shell -SATA: ST31000528AS I have searched around for and everything I find says to boot from the CD rom. However, as you can see. That is not an option for me. So I am wondering if there is another way around this? Is it possible to boot the Disk from the EFI Shell? Any help is much appreciated. • Figuring out which PC part is faulty

  I have an odd scenario and I'm having trouble figuring out which is the faulty component. First of all, the video doesn't work, monitor says it's not getting a signal. Monitor's not faulty (works on other computer) so the first suspect was video card. However 2 things make me think it's not the video card. (Don't have another machine with PCIe around to test definitively) First, the GPU fan is spinning so it's getting power. Second, tried putting in an older PCI video card that is known to be working (pulled out of another working machine) and there's still no video. Normally if it's not the video card I'd suspect the motherboard, but everything's getting power on the mobo, so I'm not sure. The case apparently doesn't have system speakers, so can't hear any of the diagnostic beeps either. Also not sure whether a faulty CPU would cause no image at all either. The parts are brand new so something's going to get RMA'd but I'm not sure which component is to blame in this case. (Only slightly related, but I also accidentally put too much thermal paste on the CPU. The fan/heatsink instructions said to put the whole tube which seemed like a lot compared to previous experience, and as I started squeezing I knew it was definitely too much and stopped at about 1/3 but against my better judgement I didn't wipe any off. I'm not sure whether that would cause problems other than not cooling as effectively as it should)

• Program to set time on local computer using GPS data

  I have a laptop running Windows XP that does not connect to the Internet and I would like to use a USB GPS receiver as a time source to set the clock. Generally, the laptop will not have access to the open sky so getting a strong, multi-satellite connection is not likely. Ideally, I would like to be able to have the program detect the GPS receiver and set the clock without intervention from the user. Is what I'm seeking even feasible?

• Computer temporarily freezes and then resumes

  This happens on ALL operating systems (7, Ubuntu, etc.). What happens is everything for 1-3 seconds becomes unresponsive, I then hear what sounds like my other internal hard drive 'spinning up', and then viola everything is responsive again. Note: Already ran SMART tests, no issues at all. I think issue is that the HDD spins down and when need it gets 'turned-on' (OS settings turn off HDD's after 20 mins of inactivity) and because my pagefile is on the other HDD it causes OS to temporarily freeze. Need more tips, and insight. Thanks More info: Running Quad CPU, 4GB RAM, Intel SSD, GT 240.

• Move/migrate vbox virtual machine to another computer along with snapshots

  I have sun virtualbox(2.2) installed on windows xp and I've some VMs(ubuntu server) running with many snapshots . How do I move virtualbox VDIs along with all the snapshots to new windows system?. I tried copying the base vdi and creating it newly on a new system and it worked fine but could not move the snapshots of the vms. I even tried copying Virtualbox.xml and machine's xml file to the new system and manually editing the snapshots location to the new place in the virtualbox.xml file, the snapshots are listed in the snapshots tab(but when I checked snapshots location in the vm's settings it's showing the default location having edited it) but when I try to use the snapshots, reverting to current, it's not booting(some snapshots giving grub 2 error, some got stalled at the boot). I also tried export and import but only current state I could export and use it on the new system with no snapshots. Is there any way I could achieve this?. Please need help...

• Computer Invisible On Domain

  Good afternoon, I'm sorry that this isn't a programming question specifically, but stackoverflow has been great at answering questions in the past, so I thought I'd give it a shot. One of our Linux users attempted to install Cygwin on our Windows Server 2008 Domain Controller. Now it is no longer possible to browse the domain and see all of the computers. For example, \\my_domain_name will just bring up a username/password dialog box (that will not accept any username or password, even the domain administrator) and no computers will ever be listed. However, I can still connect to computers based on their name or IP address. So \\eridanus or \\192.168.1.85 still work to connect to the shared directories of computers on our network. Does anyone know where I can find these settings? and how I can fix this problem? Thanks, Giawa

• Connecting to SVN server from a computer outside of my LAN

  I've got a Fedora server running Subversion and svnserve on port 3690. My repo is at /var/svn/project_name. I have my router forwarding port 3690 to the local server (as well as port 80, 21, 22 and a few others). When I connect locally to svn://192.168.0.2/project_name it works great. When I connect from an external server to svn://my.static.ip/project_name I get a time out connecting to the host. However, if I http://my.static.ip there is no problem, so port forwarding is working (at least for port 80). I don't want to run WebDAV or svn via HTTP/s. I'd like it to work using svnserve, as documented in the svn book. What have I misconfigured? EDIT Here is the last part of my iptables dump. • Computer freeze at night

  Every night except one this week my laptop froze over night. I tried to check the event viewer, but there's no real help there. Tonight I'll do a memtest to check the RAM. And this shouldn't be a temperature issue since I can play game without any problem (Diablo 3, League of legend) Is there any diagnosys tool I could use. Maybe something that would write time down every minute so I know the precise time when it freeze? I have win7 and 8gb of RAM I installed myself Answer to comment:Asus N71JQ Unknown time, but it seems differents if I look at the last entry in the logs I have no information to tell you, that's why I ask for tool and not the solution.
