  • #nav css affecting all elements in page.

    - by Sam Gabriel
    Hey guys I set up this CSS file to use on the navbar: #nav { background-color: #98bf21; } #nav li { float:left; } #nav li ul{ position: absolute; width: 172px; left: -999em; } #nav li:hover ul{ left: auto; } #nav a:link,a:visited { display:block; width:164px; font-weight:bold; color:white; background-color:#98bf21; text-align:center; padding:4px; text-decoration:none; text-transform:uppercase; } #nav a:hover,a:active { background-color: #7A991A; } And it seems to be affecting all the elements. For example all elements take the styles if the #nav a styles. Is there something I'm missing here? I'm new to web design.

  • CSS Border spanning across another div

    - by Tux
    The problem is that the border of div#content also appears in div#navigation? <html> <head> <title>WUI</title> <style type="text/css"> div#header { } div#navigation { float: left; padding-right: 20pt; } div#content { border: 5px groove; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="header"> <h1>WUI</h1> </div> <br /> <div id="navigation"> <ul> <li>Home</li> <li>Login</li> </ul> </div> <div id="content"> <p>I like when you ride with that booty on me!</p> </div> </body> </html> EDIT: I want the left side (navigation) to appear as a sidebar to the left and the content after that (to the right). I'm applying the border to the content but that border also appears in div of navigation. I hope it is clear now.

  • CSS Square Div with an Inward Oval Shape

    - by user2813099
    I am trying to create a div in css with an inward oval shape to it like this. At the moment, I have a shape that is outward instead of inward (JS Fiddle Link). .shape { float: left; width: 100px; height: 50px; border: none; background: #CC0000; border-radius: 0 90px 0 0; -moz-border-radius: 0 90px 0 0; -webkit-border-radius: 0 90px 0 0; background-image: -webkit-gradient( linear, left top, right bottom, color-stop(0, #520C0C), color-stop(1, #CC0000) ); background-image: -o-linear-gradient(right bottom, #520C0C 0%, #CC0000 100%); background-image: -moz-linear-gradient(right bottom, #520C0C 0%, #CC0000 100%); background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(right bottom, #520C0C 0%, #CC0000 100%); background-image: -ms-linear-gradient(right bottom, #520C0C 0%, #CC0000 100%); background-image: linear-gradient(to right bottom, #520C0C 0%, #CC0000 100%); } Any ideas on how to go about this?

  • How do I center this form in css?

  • CSS to Make 2 Column Content Areas

    - by Joe Majewski
    I'm trying to stray away from using tables to form the layout of my content, and I can think of two alternatives that I'd like to better learn: (1) styling list items to be side-by-side, and (2) using div blocks that float onto the same line. Both of these would have their own uses for what I'm working on. I'm already using div tags to form the entire layout of my three-column template, but what I need to do now is a bit different. In case it helps, my project can be found here. In short, here's my question; how would I style a div so that the width of it is 50% of the width of the area it occupies, rather than 50% of the width of the page? As for my other question, what would be the best approach to styling list items so that they are side-by-side? I'm working on a registration script now, and instead of using a table with "Username" on the left and the input text on the right, I can use two list items. It's late and I've been working on this project of mine for about 8 hours straight now, so I apologize if I'm asking anything confusing. Feel free to ask me any questions about what I'm trying to do. Thanks, friends. :)

  • Using CSS to create three boxes with dividers and text centered within each box

    - by linnse
    I'm trying to figure out the best way to create a row of three boxes (columns), with dividers between boxes 1 and 2, and boxes 2 and 3. The text would need to be centered within each box. h2 { color: #00ADEF; margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size:20px; font-weight:bold; line-height:23px; } p { margin-top:0; } .3colwrapper { width: 930px; margin: 0 auto; } .colbox { float:left; margin: 10px; width: 210px; background:#DDD; padding:10px 40px; } <div class="3colwrapper"> <div class="colbox"><h2>Step One</h2> <p>Sign up</p> </div> <div class="colbox"><h2>Step Two</h2> <p>Verify</p> </div> <div class="colbox"><h2>Step Three</h2> <p>Participate</p> </div> </div> Here's what I've worked up so far: http://cssdesk.com/YyjAr

  • SVG as CSS background for website navigation-bar

    - by Irfan Mir
    I drew a small (horizontal / in width) svg to be the background of my website's navigation. My website's navigation takes place a 100% of the browser's viewport and I want the svg image to fill that 100% space. So, using css I set the background of the navigation (.nav) to nav.svg but then I saw (whenI opened the html file in a browser) that the svg was not the full-width of the nav, but at the small width I drew it at. How can I get the SVG to stretch and fill the entire width of the navigation (100% of the page) ? Here is the code for the html file where the navigation is in: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"> <html lang="en"><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; • Make text in a <div> wrap around a child element.

    - by John
    In Word you can place an image on a page and have the text flow nicely around it. I was wondering how far one can get towards this using CSS, noting that is has to work in IE6. I already have something sort of close using float, but the floated child-element still 'blocks' text above it. So it partially wraps. Is it possible to put a child div at some arbitrary position in the parent, and have text flow around it freely? The actual use-case here is to put illustrations inside the main content , where each illustration is implemented inside a child . I repeat, it has to work on IE6. And I don't want to get too involved in browser-specific hacks... floating the child at least works on IE6 with no tweaking. Currently I have like this: <div> <div class="illustration"> <img src="image1.png" /> <p>Illustration caption</p> </div> <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consetetur sadipscing elitr, sed diam nonumy eirmod tempor invidunt ut labore et dolore magna aliquyam erat, sed diam voluptua. Atvero eos et accusam et justo duo dolores et ea rebum. Stet clita kasd gubergren, no sea takimata sanctus est Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. </p> </div> div.illustration { float:right; border-top: 1px solid #505050; border-left: 1px solid #505050; border-right: 1px solid #505050; border-bottom: 1px solid #505050; margin-right:30px; margin-top:100px; text-align:center; padding:2px; background: #96C3FF; } div.illustration p { margin:0; font-size:small; font-style:italic; padding:0; }

  • Content display problems when using Suckerfish menus with 960.gs and IE

    - by Cedar Jensen
    I'm using 960.gs layout and when I add the suckerfish menu as part of the content to one of the grids, the contents of adjacent siblings bleed through the menu in all versions of IE. In the listed html below, the text from 'belowFoldSection' will appear through the menu when it is visible and has enough items to make it span over 2nd section. However, the contents of 'introSummary' will be underneath the menu, as expected. I've set the z-index for #nav and #nav ul in my css and this of course makes it work in FF, Chrome and Safari, but not in IE (because IE incorrectly assigns child elements its own z-index). If I change the .grid_nn class 'position' attribute (set by default in the 960 template) from 'relative' to absolute, this fixes it in IE. However, it is my understanding that I don't want the child elements of the 'container_12' to be taken out of the flow of the document and want them positioned relative to the .container_12's starting point. (Changing the attribute to absolute causes other general layout problems) Can anyone suggest a work-around? My html: <div class="container_12"> <!--First section where menu lives--> <div class="grid_12" id="mainSection"> <div class="grid_4 alpha" id="intro"> <p>Start of menu here</p> <div id="subMenu"> <ul id="nav"> <li><a href="#">Item 1</a> <ul> <li><a href="#">Burrowing gobies</a></li> <li><a href="#">Dartfishes</a></li> <li><a href="#">Eellike gobies</a></li> <!--10 more for longer list --> </ul> </li> <li><a href="#">Item 2</a> <ul> <li><a href="#">Remoras</a></li> <li><a href="#">Tilefishes</a></li> <!--10 more for longer list --> </ul> </li> <li><a href="#">Item 3</a> <ul> <li><a href="#">Climbing perches</a></li> <li><a href="#">Labyrinthfishes</a></li> <li><a href="#">Kissing gouramis</a></li> <!--10 more for longer list --> </ul> </li> </ul> <div id="introSummary"> <h1>PERCIFORMES! • Table element in CSS table-cell offsets other table-cell contents

    - by Matt Joiner
    The following table element in the "center" div causes the contents in the "left" divs to be offset by several pixels from the top (8 in my browser). Adding some text prior to the table removes this offset. Why? How do I stop this from happening without requiring a "dummy" line of text before my table? <html> <head> <style type="text/css"> #left { display: table-cell; background-color: blue; } #menu { background-color: green; } #center { background-color: red; display: table-cell; } </style> <body> <div id="left"> <div id="menu"> Menu 1<br> Menu 2<br> </div> </div> <div id="center"> <table><tr><td>This is the main contents.</tr></td></table> </div> <div id="left"> <div id="menu"> Menu 1<br> Menu 2<br> </div> </div> </body> </html>

  • css only menu popout?

    - by aslum
    I'd like to have a logo (say it's square for simplicity) with 4 links that pop up when it is moused over. These would be positioned Above, Below and to the sides of the menu/logo. Is this achievable with only CSS? Any suggestions for how one might go about doing it? Semantically I'd like to order them with in the page something like: <ul><li><a href="Homepage">Logo</a> <ul><li class="north"><a href="north">North</a></li> <li class="west"><a href="west">West</a></li> <li class="east"><a href="east">East</a></li> <li class="south"><a href="south">South</a></li> </ul> </li> </ul> But have them show up on the page like: North West Logo East South

  • Preg Expression to identify classes/ids in a CSS file that have no contents

    - by dclowd9901
    I'm in the process of updating some old CSS files in our systems, and we have a bunch that have lots of empty classes simply taking up space in the file. I'd love to learn how to write Regular expressions, but I just don't get them. I'm hoping the more I expose myself to them (with a little more cohesive explanation), the more I'll end up understanding them. The Problem That said, I'm looking for an expression that will identify text followed by a '{' (some have spaces in between, and some do not) and if there are no letters or numbers between that bracket and '}' (spaces don't count), it will be identified as a matching string. I suppose I can trim the whitespace out of the doc before I run a regular expression through it, but I don't want to change the basic structure of the text. I'm hoping to return it into a large <textarea>. Bonus points for explaining the characters and their meanings, and also an expression identifying lines in the copy without any text or numbers, as well. I will likely use the final expression in PHP script. tl;dr: Regular Expression to match: .a_class_or #an_id { /* if there aren't any alphanumerics in here, this should be a matching line of text */ }

  • CSS background image being downloaded more than once

    - by Nick Clarke
    I noticed in my current project that Firefox (3.5.4) downloads the background image (set in CSS) for my divs more than once. I've checked with both firebug and wireshark and it really does appear that it does not wait for the first request to finish and then simply use the cached version. Wireshark also confirms that Chrome and IE8 do as expected and only request the image once. Any ideas what might be causing this? Here is a small test: Sample Page or <html> <head> <style> #one { height: 300px; width:100%; background: #FFF url('random.jpg'); } #two { height: 300px; width:100%; background: #FFF url('random.jpg'); } #three { height: 300px; width:100%; background: #FFF url('random.jpg'); } </style> </head> <body> <div id="one"></div> <div id="two"></div> <div id="three"></div> </body> EDIT I opened up a bug request as I could not find one already on bugzilla, but it turns out to be an old bug with 3.5. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=497665

  • CSS Tables & min-width container?

    - by neezer
    <div id="wrapper"> <div id="header">...</div> <div id="main"> <div id="content">...</div> <div id="sidebar">...</div> </div> </div> #wrapper { min-width: 900px; } #main { display: table-row; } #content { display: table-cell; } #sidebar { display: table-cell; width: 250px; } The problem is that the sidebar isn't always at the right-most part of the page (depending on the width of #content). As #content's width is variable (depending on the width of the window), how to I make it so that the sidebar is always at the right-most part of its parent? Ex. Here's what I have now: <--- variable window width ----> --------------------------------- | (header) | --------------------------------- [content] | [sidebar] | | | | | | | | | | | | | And here's what I want: <--- variable window width ----> --------------------------------- | (header) | --------------------------------- [content] | [sidebar] | | | | | | | | | | | | | Please let me know if you need anymore information to help me with this issue. Thanks! PS - I know I can accomplish this easily with floats. I'm looking for a solution that uses CSS tables.

  • CSS gradients in IE7 & IE8 is causing text to become aliased

    - by Cory
    I'm attempting to use a CSS gradient in a div containing some text. With Gecko and Webkit, the text displays fine. In IE7 & IE8 the text appears aliased (jaggy). I came across this blog stating: "we decided to disable ClearType on elements that use any DXTransform". IE Blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/08/31/730887.aspx That was back in 2006; 3.5 years later, I assume this bug would be fixed, but it's not. Is there a way to do this in IE8 without resorting to stuffing a repeating background image in the div? Here's an example of what I mean. <style> div { height: 50px; background: -moz-linear-gradient(top, #fff, #ddd); background: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, from(#fff), to(#ddd)); filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient(startColorstr=#ffffffff, endColorstr=#ffdddddd); } </style> <div>Hello World</div> <p>Normal text</p> In IE, the text in the div is aliased (jaggy), and the text in the paragraph is not. Any solution that doesn't involve images would be greatly appreciated.

  • jQuery change CSS background position and mouseover/mouseout

    - by steelfrog
    I have a menu composed of a single image (e.g., sprites). In order to display the hover image, I simply move the background image down. I'd like this effect to be controlled by jQuery and animated. This is a sample menu item. <ul> <li id="home"><a href="#"></a></li> </ul> This is what I'm toying with. I'm very new to jQuery and am having problems getting the proper selector going. $(document).ready(function(){ $('#home a'); // Set the 'normal' state background position .css( {backgroundPosition: "0 0"} ) // On mouse over, move the background .mouseover(function(){ $(this).stop().animate({backgroundPosition:"(0 -54px)"}, {duration:500}) }) // On mouse out, move the background back .mouseout(function(){ $(this).stop().animate({backgroundPosition:"(0 0)"}, {duration:500}) }) }); Could you point out what I'm doing wrong? I know the selector is probably incorrect but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to manipulate the anchor.

  • CSS: Margin-top when parent's got no border

    - by Manny
    Hi, As you can see in this picture, I've got an orange div inside a green div with no top border. The orange div has a 30px top margin, but it's also pushing the green div down. Of course, adding a top border will fix the issue, but I need the green div to be top borderless. What could I do? html: <div class="header">Top</div> <div class="body"> <div class="container">Box</div> </div> <div class="foot">Bottom</div> css: .body { border: 1px solid black; border-top: none; border-bottom: none; width: 120px; height: 112px; background-color: lightgreen; } .body .container { background-color: orange; height: 50px; width: 50%; margin-top: 30px; } Thanks

  • Automatic multi-page multi-column flowing text with QtWebkit (HTML/CSS/JS -> PDF)

    - by Peter Boughton
    I have some HTML documents that are converted to PDF, using software that renders using QtWebkit (not sure which version). Currently, the documents have specific tags to split into columns and pages - so whenever the wording changes, it is a manual time-consuming process to move these tags so that the columns and pages fit. Can anyone provide a way to have text auto-wrapped into the next column/page (as appropriate) when it reaches the bottom of the current container? Any HTML, CSS or JS supported by QtWebkit is ok (assuming it works in the PDF converter). (I have tested the webkit-column-* in CSS3 and it appears QtWebkit does not support this.) To make things more exciting, it also needs to: - put a header at the top of each page, with page X of Y numbering; - if an odd number of pages, add a blank page at the end (with no header); - have the ability to say "don't break inside this block" or "don't break after this header" I have put some quick example initial markup and target markup to help explain what I'm trying to do. (The actual documents are far more complicated than that, but I need a simple proof-of-concept before I attack the real ones.) Any suggestions? Update: I've got a partially working solution using Aaron's "filling up" suggestion - I'll post more details in a bit.

  • Completely bizarre Firefox CSS bug

    - by Jason
    I've been doing front end development for a long time, and I have NEVER come across a bug like this before... Save the following HTML to a file and view it in Firefox (mine is 3.6.3): <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <style type="text/css"> body { font-family: Helvetica, Sans-Serif;} h2 {font-weight: normal;} </style> </head> <body> <h2>Some normal text <strong>some bold text</strong> weird huh?</h2> </body> </html> If you don't want to give it a shot the output is like your cat walked across your keyboard while character map was turned on, except in the strong tags. I feel like this may be a font issue? When I get rid of font-weight: normal it goes back to normal, but I don't want everything to be bolded in my h2... Anyone have any ideas? More importantly, is anyone able to reproduce this?? Thanks.

  • CSS opacity and child elements

    - by Rob
    <style type="text/css"> div#foo { background: #0000ff; width: 200px; height: 200px; opacity: 0.30; filter: alpha(opacity = 30); } div#foo>div { color: black; opacity:1; filter: alpha(opacity = 100); } </style> <div id="foo"> <div>Lorem</div> <div>ipsum</div> <div>dolor</div> </div> In the above example, the opacity of div#foo is inherited by child elements, causing the text to become nearly unreadable. I suppose it's wrong to say it is inherited, the opacity is applied to the parent div and the children are part of that, so attempting to override it for the child elements doesn't work because technically they are opaque. I typically just use an alpha png background image in such cases, but today i'm wondering if there's a better way to make a background of a div semi-transparent without affecting the contents.
