  • ubuntu 12.04 how do I select a custom program to open specific file type

    I want to set a filetype to be opened by a specific program other than ubuntu's default. I usually right click properties open with and select the application I need. This however does not work in this case. The application I want is not shown in the "open with" dialog and there apparently is no way I can browse to it or type in a custom command like I used to in 10.04. Is this a bug that I should file or a feature that can be worked around?

  • Unity-2D ALT F1,F2 custom configuration

    I have been using Ubuntu since the first public version (I used Debian before). I always have had the policy to change between 8 workspaces with ALT F1...F8. I know this is not a "standard" or so, but I prefer this. It worked well with Unity (Unity-2D, I mean) too, after some configuration. But currently the odd thing happened that after a system restart this is not the case anymore, I am totally lost what could happened. Now ALT F3...F8 works, but not ALT-F1...F2, which just focuses launcher/dash, which is not the thing I want. I know this is the standard meaning of these key combinations (AFAIK) but defining my own key combinations worked before and now it stopped working ... If someone have any idea how to restore my custom configured meaning for ALT F1...F2 too, please share with me. Thanks!

    Most people's home page is google.com. My homepage is just a custom html page hosted on my computer. I do this because I am a web developer, and I have several projects that I work on a one time, so I like to have quick links to all of them. On that page I usually just have a Link to google.com for when I want to search. But below all of my quick links, I want to add a google search box (with Autocompletions). I first used a simple iframe to embed google.com into the page, but then my search results were confined to that iframe. I wanted to search for something, then my results would open in a new tab. I then came across this code snippet but it doesn't have Autocompletions: http://www.refactory.org/s/google_search/view/2 How can I add Autocompletions to this? Or is there a better way of doing it?   • asp.net web apps: are OnServerValidate necessary with custom validators

    I recently created a .net web app that used over 200 custom validators on one page. I wrote code for both ClientValidationFunction and OnServerValidate which results in a ton of repetitive code. My sql statements are parameterized, I have functions that pull data from input fields and validates them before passing to the sql statements or stored procedures. And the javascript validates the fields before the page submits. So essentially the data is clean and valid before it even hits the OnServerValidate and clean after it anyways due to the aforementioned steps. This makes me question, is OnServerValidate really needed when I validate on the clientside?

  • Bukkit send a custom placed name plate?

    Hello i have been working on a part of my plugin that has waypoints allowing the user to create delete etc. I got to thinking after using and seeing a couple of the disguse plugins. That maybe i could create a command toggle that would show the user where the waypoints they have are! I know how to do all of this i just have no idea how to display a nameplate to the client. I know its possible because disguisecraft does it i tried looking though their code but couldent find much... I belive to get this effect i need to send packets to the client if someone can direct me to a list of bukkit packets or even a solution to sending the client a custom located nameplate that would be fantastic!   • I'm a Subversion geek, why should I consider or not consider Mercurial or Git or any other DVCS?

    I try to understand the benefits of distributed version control system (DVCS). I found Subversion Re-education and this article by Martin Fowler very useful. Mercurial and others DVCS promote a new way of working on code with changesets and local commits. It prevents from merging hell and other collaboration issues We are not affected by this as I practice continuous integration and working alone in a private branch is not an option, unless we are experimenting. We use a branch for every major version, in which we fix bugs merged from the trunk. Mercurial allows you to have lieutenants I understand this can be useful for very large projects like Linux, but I don't see the value in small and highly collaborative teams (5 to 7 people). Mercurial is faster, takes less disk space and full local copy allows faster logs & diffs operations. I'm not concerned by this either, as I didn't notice speed or space problems with SVN even with very large projects I'm working on. I'm seeking for your personal experiences and/or opinions from former SVN geeks. Especially regarding the changesets concept and overall performance boost you measured. UPDATE (12th Jan): I'm now convinced that it worth a try. UPDATE (12th Jun): I kissed Mercurial and I liked it. The taste of his cherry local commits. I kissed Mercurial just to try it. I hope my SVN Server don't mind it. It felt so wrong. It felt so right. Don't mean I'm in love tonight. FINAL UPDATE (29th Jul): I had the privilege to review Eric Sink's next book called Version Control by Example. He finished to convince me. I'll go for Mercurial.

  • Custom .NET apps and clustering

    So for a clustered environment - how would this work with your apps? what about your own custom .NET apps? Would there be a special way to develop them? I know that you can say create a simple Hello world app, and cluster that but they wouldnt be something you could see interms of the UI or anything, so they would effectively need to be developed as a Windows Service perhaps or even as a standard Console app which runs and not wait for user input but you wouldnt see any output from it (unless you redirect output to somewhere else) What im getting at here is... for those who have experience or developed a cluster application in .NET, how did you do it and what are the things to be aware of? For example we have the cloud service - fundamentally its built on clustering - if there is an outage, another node takes place and service is resumed as normal but we dont really see much of that downtime.

  • My Herokuapp is inaccessible from custom domain name

    I have a Heroku app that is located at myapp.herokuapp.com. I have mapped a domain name to this app, using the A properties. I followed the instructions on Heroku's website to the letter, and it worked for a few days. Now when I try to access the site from the custom domain, it's timing out! On Chrome, I am getting "Oops! Google Chrome could not find that page!" message. I tried pinging the name as well, but I got this error: ping: cannot resolve yourhostname.org: Unknown host The app itself is working and I don't see any error messages from Heroku. Or from new Relic. What's going on here? Also tried running host and this was the error message: ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

  • Why did 13.10 break my custom keyboard layout?

    I was using a custom keyboard layout. Basically I modified the us-mac layout to fit my ideal of a math-heavy version of the regular us layout that also throws German umlauts into mix. It went well and worked marvelously for 6 consecutive versions of Ubuntu. Today's version Upgrade (from 13.04 to 13.10) broke that streak. I now have the usual crappy Macintosh-Layout. Now xkb just ignores my layout and all of the other changes I make in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/us (tried to switch '0' and '9' everywhere and rebooted - no effect). Why is that? I suspect I have to do an extra step now for the changes to take effect or something like that. Anyone care to point me in the right direction?

    I'm starting to need an access control for roles in my app. I don't know much of this, but I understand how vBulletin works: I create groups, then give permissions to groups. I think that what I need is the Role Bases Access Control (RBAC) , but i'm not sure, because I need groups to give permissions instead of single users (Maybe it's not that complicated to achieve). Example of what I'm thinking: Given a post: Editor's Group has permission to view it before it's published. Editor's Group has permission to edit its content. Public Group (Default) has not permission to view it before it's published. Admin Group has permission to delete the post. So basically I wan't orientation about if RBAC is what I need. And also, how would it be good to store group membership in a user, for example, would be good to have: ID NAME PASSWORD GROUPS (1, MyName, MyPassword, 1/2/3/4/5) and explode it via PHP or one registry for every Group membership in a table named permissions, example: USERID, USERGROUP values (1, 1), (1, 2) Maybe should be the second way because of the formal norms but I didn't study yet Databases 1 at college.

    Including customizable, JavaScript-based scrollbars (and scrolling functionality in general, i.e. bind the control to the mouse scroll wheel) in your webapp can be a great temptation. However all solutions I could find were developed by individuals (which can equal lack of formal or future support). In addition I fail to remember any mainstream site using them. In my particular case, no-JavaScript or IE6/odd-browser environments are not intended to be supported. Should custom scrollbars be avoided nowadays? If not, what's the best option one can choose?

    I'm currently working with phpmyedit and I need to access to the 'Add' (new record) function using a URL. As this script (phpmyedit) is dinamically generated, when I press the 'Add' button, I get the form to fill but the URL has no changes. How can I create some custom URL for the ADD button, that allows me to access externally and also pass parameters through the URL?     This is hardly a theoretical question as many have done this, albeit there's very little information on the underlying processes. I'm developing a custom MIPS-based processor on which I would like to run ubuntu. I'm quite baffled as to what to do next after you've designed the instruction set and the computer architecture itself. I need to be able to run a kernel and OS but how does it all tie in? At the moment I'm researching into designing a compiler for the linux kernel to generate the appropriate assembly language. Is that a good way to go? What do I need to do after that?

    I am using google custom search for my site, I want google to provide at most 2 searches from a site. I am not sure whether it is possible or not but it seems there is no such option on google CSE. For example my CSE has 10 listed sites, what I want is that whenever user makes a search then search results should show at most two links from a site. In general CSE is resulting multiple results from one site only and those comes on page 1, if it is at most 2 from a site then user has better chance to have links from other sites too.

  • VCS for single user using file sync service

    I'm trying to setup a version control for my one man project. My project files are in sync thanks to live mesh (but I could be using dropbox for that matter), between my laptop, my home pc and my office pc. I'm now using Netbeans with local file history. Sometimes it helps to revert to a previous state of one file. But imagine a situation when multiple files have problems. Correct me if I'm wrong but I would have to go to every file and revert to previous "safe" state. I don't like this approach, so I'm considering using a version control between SVN and GIT. I have some previous experience with SVN (TortoiseSVN) and I know that I can create a file:// repo. So, what a want to do is setup a VCS inside my synced folder just to have the ability to "revert" to a previous version if something goes wrong. Since everything's been synced to all computers, I wouldn't ever need to run an update. The file tree organization would be the following: C:...\SyncedFolder\MyProject\ Inside MyProject folder are all the project files plus a directory that has SVN or GIT info of my project (the repo/master). What VCS is best for this situation: SVN or GIT? Does SVN need to store all files from HEAD revision, thus "duplicating" all my project inside my synced folder? Does GIT eliminates this problem? Is this the best approach?

    If it is possible to auto-format code before and after a source control commit, checkout, diff, etc. does a company really need a standard code style? It feels like standard coding style debates that have been raging since programming began like "put the bracket on the following line" or "properly indent your (" are no longer essential. I realize in languages where white space matters the diff will have to consider it but for languages where the style is a personal preference is there really a need to worry about it anymore?

    A bug has been filed and fixed (super quickly) in SWT: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=305294 Just to preface this, my goal here is to print the two images into a canvas so that I can animate the canvas sliding across the screen (think iPhone), sliding the controls themselves was too CPU intensive, so this was a good alternative until I tested it on Win7. I'm open to anything that will help me solve my original problem, it doesn't have to be fixing the problem below. Does anyone know how to get "Control.print(GC)" to work with Windows 7 Aero? I have code that works just fine in Windows XP and in Windows 7, when Aero is disabled, but the command: control.print(GC) causes a non-top control to be effectively erased from the screen.
