    There are multiple reasons why a user may want to make a copy of the database. Sometimes a user wants to copy the database to the same server and sometime wants to copy the database on a different server. The important point is that DBA and Developer may want copies of their database for various purposes. I copy my database for backup purpose. However, when we hear coping database – the very first thought which comes to our mind is – Backup and Restore or Attach and Detach. Both of these processes have their own advantage and disadvantages. The matter of the fact, those methods is much efficient and recommended methods. However, if you just want to copy your database as it is and do not want to go for advanced feature. You can just use the copy feature of the SQL Server.   • Shared Database Servers

    As more enterprises consolidate their database environments to support private cloud initiatives, ISVs will have to deal with sceanrios where they need to run on a shared powerful database server like Exadata. Some ISVs are concerned about meeting SLAs for performance in a shared environment. Outside the virtualization world, there are capabilities of Oracle Database which can be used to prevent resource contention and guarantee SLA. These capabilities are - 1) Instance Caging - This guarantees the CPU allocated or limits the maximum number of CPUs (and so the number of Oracle processes) that an instance of Database can use simultaneously. With this feature, ISVs can be assured that their application is allocated adequate CPUs even if the database server is shared with other applications. 2) CPU Resource Allocation with Database Resource Manager - This allocates percentages of CPU time to different users and applications within a database. ISVs can use this feature to ensure that priority user or workloads within their application get CPU resources over other requirements. 3) Exadata I/O Resource Manager - The Database Resource Manager feature in Oracle Database 11g has been enhanced for use with Exadata. This allows the sharing of storage between databases without fear of one database monopolizing the I/O bandwidth and impacting the performance of the other databases sharing the storage. This can be used to ensure that I/O does not become a performance bottleneck due to poor design of other applications sharing the same server.

I have seen fully separate layer/.dll for very few or no business logic. I have seen along with ORMs, there are separate data access layer playing the same role. And with them, I have always heard- "These are the standards you have to maintain". So, what are the real standards for data access in .net? What are the rules you follow?

  • When does depth testing happen?

    I'm working with 2D sprites - and I want to do 3D style depth testing with them. When writing a pixel shader for them, I get access to the semantic DEPTH0. Would writing to this value help? It seems it doesn't. Maybe it's done before the pixel shader step? Or is depth testing only done when drawing 3D things (I'm using SpriteBatch)? Any links/articles/topics to read/search for would be appreciated.

  • Can I import an existing member data used in old ASP to a new ASP.NET membership database? [closed]

    I have an old website that I designed and still maintain using old ASP that has a membership database (MS-SQL) that I built from scratch. It is a very simple database that has all the user information in one table (including login info and personal info) and then details and other odds and ends in other tables. It is WAY past time to upgrade this to .NET, especially since I need to add a Paypal payment system into it as soon as I can. I've designed several other sites with membership in .NET, but they have all been from scratch. Is there an easy way to transition from the old ASP site to a new .NET membership database without losing the data? There are hundreds of users with thousands of records relating to those users that I'd rather not lose, if possible. Any ideas on a relatively painless way to do this?

    I want to write a php code to be embedded in drupal7 module. I want to call a procedure which can copy the newly generated data in local mysql database to the remote mysql database. When data is inserted in tables 'A' of my local data base it should be copied to the specific table 'B' of the remote mysql server's database. Table 'A' is on local host. Table 'B' is on remote server. insert data on 'A' - copied data in 'B' Is this possible? Thanks for the help.

    Let's assume a successful web Spring application running on a MySQL or PostgreSQL database. The traffic is becoming so high and the amount of data is becoming so big that a distributed database solution needs to be implemented to address scalability issue. Let's also assume this application is using Hibernate and the data access layer is cleanly separated with DAOs. Ideally, one should be able to add or remove databases easily. A failback solution is welcome too. What would be the best strategy to scale this database? Is it possible to minimize sharding code (Shard) in the application?

  • Where should the database and mail parameters be stored in a Symfony2 app?

    In the default folder structure for a Symfony2 project the database and mail server credentials are stored in parameters.yml file inside ProjectRoot/app/config/parameters.yml with these default values: parameters: database_driver: pdo_mysql database_host: 127.0.0.1 database_port: null database_name: symfony database_user: root database_password: null mailer_transport: smtp mailer_host: 127.0.0.1 mailer_user: null mailer_password: null locale: en secret: ThisTokenIsNotSoSecretChangeIt During development we change these parameters to the development database and mail servers. This file is checked into the source code repository. The problem is when we want to deploy to the production server. We are thinking about automating the deployment process by checking out the project from git and deploy it to the production server. The thing is that our project manager has to manually update these parameters after each update. The production database and mail servers parameters are confidential and only our project manager knows them. I need a way to automate this step and suggestion on where to store the production parameters until they are applied?

  • Need suggestions on how to create a website with an encrypted database.

    Hi guys, I want to create a website where a user enters content (say a couple of sentences) which eventually gets stored in a backend database (maybe MySQL). But before the content leaves the client side, I want it to get encrypted using something on client like maybe javascript. The data will travel over the web encrypted, but more importantly, will also be permanently stored in the backend database encrypted. Is JavaScript appropriate to use for this? Would 256 bit encryption take too long? Also, how do you query an encrypted database later on if you want to pull down the content that a user may have submitted over the past 2 months? I'm looking for tips, suggestions and any pointers you guys may have in how to go about learning about and accomplishing this. Thanks!

    I am designing a login system for a project, and have an issue about it requiring two trips to the database when a user logs in. User types in username and password Database is polled and password hash is retrieved for comparative purposes (first trip) Code tests hash against entered password (and salt), and if verified, resets the session ID New session ID and username are sent back to the database to write a row to the login table, and generate a login ID for that session. EDIT: I am using a random salt. Does this design make sense? Am I missing something? Is my concern about two trips unfounded? Comments and suggestions are welcome.

  • How to recover Wordpress on GoDaddy hosting after reseting database password? [migrated]

    I did reset my database password, so I could enter the phpMyAdmin, but now my Wordpress installation can't connect to the database. I tried to access the "wp-config.php" (should be at http://mysite.com/wp-config.php right?) but, again, I get the "can't connect to database" message. Also, now when I try to access the file manager on the GoDaddy hosting, I get "The page isn't redirecting properly". I did e-mail the GoDaddy support, and I'm researching while they do not answer. Not sure if it's a GoDaddy or Wordpress issue. Is there any way to fix Wordpress, or I'll need to re-install it?

  • Testing and Validation – You Really Do Have The Time

    One of the great advantages in my role as a Technical Specialist here at Microsoft is that I get to work with so many great clients. I get to see their environments and how they use them, and the way they work with SQL Server. I’ve been a data professional myself for many years. Over that time I’ve worked with many database platforms, lots of client applications, and written a lot of code in many industries. For a while I was also a consultant, so I got to see how other shops did things as well. But because I now focus on a “set” base of clients (over 500 professionals in over 150 companies) I get to see them over a longer period of time. Many of them help me understand how they use the product in their projects, and I even attend some DBA regular meetings. I see the way the product succeeds, and I see when it fails. Something that has really impacted my way of thinking is the level of importance any given shop is able to place on testing and validation. I’ve always been a big proponent of setting up a test system and following a very disciplined regimen to make sure it will work in production for any new projects, and then taking the lessons learned into production as standards. I know, I know – there’s never enough time to do things right like this. Yet the shops I see that do it have the same level of work that they output as the shops that don’t. They just make the time to do the testing and validation and create a standard that they will follow in production. And what I’ve found (surprise surprise) is that they have fewer production problems. OK, that might seem obvious – but I’ve actually tracked it and those places that do the testing and best practices really do save stress, time and trouble from that effort. We all think that’s a good idea, but we just “don’t have time”. OK – but from what I’m seeing, you can gain time if you spend a little up front. You may find that you’re actually already spending the same amount of time that you would spend in doing the testing, you’re just doing it later, at night, under the gun.     I'm interested in writing my own database - a triple-store. Are there any good resources to help with the challenges of such a project? Or more generally: How can I learn to write my own database? Some specific issues I'm unsure of: How is the data actually stored on the file-system? A flat-file seems easy enough, but a database is a lot more then a flat-file. What kinds of things are typically stored (or cached) in memory? How are indexes created and stored? How is ACID compliance achieved? Etc. This is a big topic, but knowing how to store large amounts of data in a reliable way is good to know. (My investigation into existing triple-stores was summarized back in 2008; not much has changed in 4 years it seems. This is why I want write my own.)

    First you need to implement the simple bpel process like this : In my current project, I inherited a lot of OSB components that have been developed by (former) team members, but they all lack unit tests. This is a situation I really dislike, since this makes it much harder to refactor or bug-fix the existing code base. So, for all newly created components (and components I have to bug-fix) I strive to add unit tests. Of course, the unit tests will be created using my favourite testing tool: soapUI ! Unit of test The unit test should be created for the service composition, which in OSB terms should be the proxy service combination with its business service. Now, since you do not want to rely on any other services, you should provide mock services for all services invoked from your Component-Under-Test. In a previous article, I wrote about mocking your services in soapUI. While this approach would also be valid here, creating a mock service (and certainly deploying it on a separate WebServer) does violate one of the core principles of unit testing: to make your unit tests as self-contained as possible, i.e. not depending on any external components. In this article, I will show you how to achieve this by simply providing a mock response inside your unit test. Scenario The scenario I implement for testing is a simple currency converter; the external request consists of a from and a to currency, and an amount (in currency from). The service will perform an exchange rate lookup using the WebServiceX CurrencyConverter and return a response to the caller consisting of both the source and target currencies and amounts.   • Is there a way to determine if a database has been altered, then to push new data to the Application

    All our (my company) currently applications pull information from that database, is their a way to get the following types of databses to either push data or push an event to allow the application to pull data. Access SQL Oracle File systems (Files and folders) The issue today is that most of our application spend a large amount of time constantly looking at databases and file system checking to see if data has changed . It would be better for the database to inform the application when data has changed. Are there tools within Visual studio to allow this or are there tools within the database / filesystem to do this? All ready asked this on stack overflow but go no answer. I've been doing some more research but I cant seem to get any further. My manager has asked to investigate it as it would mean our applications are much quicker and efficient.
